At one time, it seemed the Ornge scandal was all about former Ornge CEO Chris Mazza and his $1.4 million salary.

There is good reason to view the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food as on a mission to do something other than help feed the planet. In a 2010 report, the Rapporteur suggested that countries should encourage “communal ownership systems” instead of concentrating on the “Western concept of property rights,” and noted that ensuring a universal right to food could necessitate the use of “redistributive programmes that may in turn result in restrictions on others’ right to property.” In other words, when Mr. De Schutter tells Postmedia news that “the question of hunger is …a political question,” we should pay attention. He’s here in the hopes of spreading an entire ideology as much as he is to promote any simple food strategy or hunger policy.

I often find myself puzzled that Mother’s Day and (Father’s Day) still exist in our politically-correct society.

For many people these gender-based holidays cause problems for families that don’t conform to what we used to call the “norm” – that is the two parent, heterosexual family. Perhaps the celebration of “Mothering Day” would be more appropriate for gay, transgendered and one-parent families, among others.

Mother’s Day can also evoke painful emotions for people who have lost their mothers, and mothers who have lost a child.

Perhaps some women are even suffering today because they regret having an abortion.

Others may be having a bittersweet kind of day remembering Mother’s Days past of “breakfast” in bed and crayoned-cards delivered by chubby little hands that are now all grown-up.

Fathers can be mothers now too; if you define a mother as someone who carries a child to term and gives birth. Or in the case of a surrogate, the person that gives birth may only be a mere incubator for a childless couple.

So what exactly is a “Mother” or “Father” in these politically-correct times?

Why don’t we just just combine the two and have one Parent’s Day?

But whatever you want to call it, have a good one!

Michael Taube has a thought-provoking column in the Ottawa Citizen – When life begins is a vital debate.

He supports MP Stephen Woodworth’s motion to have a debate on the humanity of the unborn child, and has evolved into a pro-life position himself.

However Taube believes that abortions should not be banned. But medically-unnecessary abortions should be paid by the individual; not the taxpayer:

I still don’t believe in legally banning abortions. I still believe the state must not interfere in citizens’ daily lives, and freedom of choice must always prevail in liberal democratic societies. But Canadians must come to terms with what they accept as the threshold between life and death. They should have the right to pay (with private money) for this controversial procedure — and live with the consequences of their decision.

There is no law currently in Canada regarding on-demand abortion, other than the taxpayer is forced to pay for it. This would at least be a step forward.

But in a country where abortion statistics are being increasingly flushed down the rabbit hole, how can we ever hope to have an open, democratic discussion – even if our elected representatives would actually agree to do so?

I’m sure there were many like me who couldn’t handle the graphic details and shut out as much possible. What still managed to seep through the mental filter was so abhorrent as to truly rock us to our very souls with the realization that human beings had the potential to act so despicably.

And so last night I found myself cheering with the relatives of Tori Stafford. Nothing will bring her back, but perhaps now we can all find a bit of closure and hug our own children and grandchildren even tighter.

May Tori’s family find peace and healing.

Kudos to Patricia Maloney at Run With Life for focusing attention on a sneaky maneuver by the McGuinty Government to cover up actual abortion statistics and associated costs to Ontario taxpayers. She received the following response:

Freedom of Information requests regarding abortion will henceforth be denied as of January 1, 2012:

Please be advised that effective January 1, 2012, section 65 of the Act (Application of the Act) was amended to exclude records relating to the provision of abortion services. The effect of section 65 (5.7) of the Act is that individuals no longer have a right to make access requests under Part II of FIPPA to an institution for records in the custody or under the control of that institution relating to the provision of abortion services.

What is the purpose of this exclusion? Is it a political decision with the intent to deliberately skew abortion statistics and enable the media to proclaim that rates are decreasing?

Funny how most MSM outlets are silent on this blockage of information. Normally they would be outraged at such an abrogation of democratic rights. Even if you’re Pro-Choice, are you also Pro-Censorship?

Well I was going to post something about the elections in France and Greece, but something told me to check Sandy’s blog first.

Sure enough we were both thinking the same thing again; or perhaps I received the vibes that she posted – (Quebec students, French & Greek voters reject “austerity”). It’s getting scary how much we think alike.

Yes the voters in France and Greece seem to be engaging in wishful thinking for sure, and Quebec students are in absolute denial. Appeasement only encourages the dysfunction to continue until some kind of staggering crisis occurs. And sadly it’s a rare politician that can actually do what’s right for a country and still maintain confidence and support during difficult times.

I only wish to add a small quote from Peter Foster’s column in today’s National Post (France, Greece vote for fantasy):

Austerity and growth are not alternatives. Government austerity and structural reform are the preconditions for private sector growth, which is the only “sustainable” version.

Ten years ago, after reabsorbing its Eastern half from the Communist bloc, Germany was the sick man of Europe. However, then Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder introduced a reform program that curtailed the power of labour unions and made both hiring and firing easier. Germany is now by far the strongest economy in Europe.

But carry on everyone – You obviously have to learn the hard way.

* * * *

Update

The NDP has a remedy for Quebec student unrest – Metro:

The leader of the federal NDP says his party’s position on the student crisis rattling Quebec is perfectly clear: it wants more federal money for post-secondary education.

Of course. What else did you expect from a socialist party? Let’s just kick that debt can even further down the road.

Of course extremism and irresponsibility doesn’t just come from the left. This is scary – Neo-Nazi party has election breakthrough in Greece, leader warns ‘time for fear has come’.

Great column by Daniel Hannan on Greek reality-denial and EU appeasement – Even as it drags them under, Greeks cling to the euro:

Most Greeks have voted for parties which are committed to ending the loans-for-austerity deal with Brussels – though they cheerfully insist that they intend to remain in the euro.

To EU officials, their attitude is incomprehensible. Greece, as they see it, is issuing demands from a position of weakness, insulting its benefactors while simultaneously expecting them to offer better terms.

So far, though, I’d say that tactic has worked pretty well. At every turn, the EU and IMF have ponied up. No one in Brussels seriously expects Greece to honour its fiscal promises in full. Yet, time after time, new loans are extended.

And even Andrew Coyne can get it right once in a while: In Quebec, a premier surrenders to mob rule.

Phantom Observer points to the curious phenomenon of pundits refusing to take no for an answer from Justin Trudeau regarding his immediate leadership aspirations.

But I did find Chantel Hebert’s last paragraph intriguing:

…For many Liberals, going into a do-or-die battle behind Trudeau — who is identified with an iconic legacy they are proud to defend — would come more easily than spending a campaign defending Rae’s NDP record.

And if it came to that, more than a few Liberals would feel that losing on a Trudeau ticket would at least offer the party the grace of dying with dignity.

Of course that speculation is not only dependent on whether or not Trudeau could be wooed to actually run for leader, but also whether Bob Rae would even be allowed to enter the race.

But why do MSM columnists and pundits obsess over the fate of the Liberal party?

Are they nostalgic for the old Glory Days of the Liberal dynasties?

* * * *

Update

Warren Kinsella on Liberal leadership possibilities. Notice he doesn’t say anything negative about Dalton’s brother.
