Blogger convicted of uttering death threats against PM

Because you can’t threaten the Prime Minister of Canada and then hide behind "Freedom of the Press".

Scott Reid, take note.

Update: Apparently Stephen Harper is also responsible for sore ovaries. Is there any evil in the history of the whole world that can’t be directly attributed to Stephen Harper?

Please just say no, Your Excellency!

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

While some bristle at the thought of Canada’s unelected Governor General having to decide the fate of our country over the next few days, and others are even using the situation to promote the demise of the Parliamentary system altogether, there is one more choice other than coalition, prorogation or election.

Her excellency could just say no, according to Dr. Roger Gibbons:

…The Governor General could simply refuse to accept Mr. Harper’s resignation, just as prime ministers and premiers in the past have often refused to accept letters of resignation from cabinet ministers. The Governor General could say that accepting Harper’s resignation is not in the best interests of the country because it would set in motion a choice between two unacceptable alternatives.

In effect, the Governor General would send Mr. Harper back to negotiate an economic package that could secure majority support in the House. She would implicitly instruct the opposition parties to make this Parliament work. She would exercise the discretionary power that the Constitution has wisely placed in her hands. She would just say no.

If they can’t come to a resolution even after being ordered to do so by the GG, then I agree with Lorrie Goldstein that proroguing Parliament is the next least distasteful alternative. (Lorrie has provided some excellent contact info in his column.)

The fact is there are some in the Liberal party who already beginning to see the folly of this farce and are keenly aware of the growing public backlash. Even normally complacent Canadians are becoming angry like they’ve never been before. Just ask talkshow radio hosts and any other media.

Who knows?  Those same Canadians may actually be motivated to vote next time around, if we’re ever allowed to have a voice in who runs the country again.

The GGs decision could give the Liberal party a graceful way out and allow them to save face.

May God grant Michaelle Jean the wisdom to do the best thing for Canada.

Interesting little tête-à-tête here between the Sun’s Lorrie Goldstein and Paul Berton - Canada’s Future at Stake. Don’t be afraid to let them know what you think of their respective arguments!

Paul’s email address is pberton@lfpress.com, and Lorrie’s is lorrie.goldstein@sunmedia.ca.

I actually never realized this before but Lorrie’s editorial allows comments.

This is worth checking out:

“We respectfully remind broadcasters that the proposed coalition is just that: a proposal to the Canadian people by two of Canada['s] political parties with the backing of a third,” Mr. Layton’s chief of staff, Anne McGrath, wrote to broadcasters in what appears to be a hastily typed memo.

“The proposed coalition for a co-operative government will, and could only, take effect [if] the House of Commons demonstrates its lack of confidence in the current Prime Minister and his administration of our country. Until such time, the New Democratic Party and the Liberal Part (sic) are distinct and functionally separate caucuses in the House of Commons,” Ms. McGrath wrote.

Poor Jack. He wants to be the Deputy Prime Minister and have his separate air time too. Sometimes life just isn’t fair.

Dion’s Amateur Hour - Adam Radwanski:

…For Dion’s sake, frankly, not seeing it might have been better. The stumbles over language were perhaps to be expected, although with all afternoon to film it you’d think they could’ve done enough takes to get it right. But the presentation itself was plainly appalling. At a time when he needed to look reassuring, to look prime ministerial, he looked exactly the way the Conservatives have been trying to portray him - like the leader of some sort of third-rate coup, being filmed in his hideout with one of his accomplices sticking a cheap video camera in his face

A sad day for Canada

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

I woke up this morning feeling sickened and sad for our country.

Some people are blaming Harper for effectively uniting the left, but that still doesn’t excuse the Liberals and NDP for their power-hungry sellout to Canadians.

Whatever happens now, our country has been diminished. Our reputation has been tarnished. Our pride has been wounded.

I feel that at this point, all we can do is express our anger as vocally as possible - and pray.

Say no to this power grab
- Sunmedia:

…Dion has advised the Governor General he has the confidence of the Commons to form a government.

He doesn’t have the confidence of the Canadian public. He doesn’t even enjoy the support of his own party.

Dion would lead the "coalition," until a new Liberal boss is chosen in May. So we would have a toothless leader forced to kowtow to the reckless economic policies of the NDP, while Bloc leader Gilles Duceppe plays puppet master.

This is madness beyond the scope of most Canadians to comprehend.

What we do understand is the danger this unholy alliance poses to the economic stability of Canada during these uncertain times….

Rally For Canada!

Monday, December 1st, 2008

I just finished listening to the Jeff Allan show and I can never remember a time that callers were so passionate and emotional. The vast majority were very much against the idea of a Coalition government, except the odd one like Andrew Telegdi who called in to applaud the idea.

Many Canadians are angry and upset. What can you do? Well, here’s something: You can join a rally! Get the details at Rally for Canada.

This is a turning point for Canada. Please don’t squander this opportunity to speak out for democracy.

It may be your last chance.

Stephen Taylor now has a post up - Announcing Rally for Canada.ca

3) Write a letter to the editor : Globe, Star (contact info about 1/4 way down the page),  Post.

You can contact the Sun at  torsun.editor@sunmedia.ca

4) Talk to your friends and relatives. They may not be aware of what is happening.

5) Vote at news page polls - City News, CTV, Globe, Star, Sun. And please don’t forget the poll at Blue Like You!

Afternoon Update : Graham Richardson mentioned that Harper is already being spoken of as a leader in the past tense.

You know, the thing that really burns me up here is the arrogance of the Liberal and NDP parties (with the cooperation of the Bloc), that they would just overturn the results of the October election at their whim, and not even ask the people what they want!  I get no sense that they are polling the people. I get no feeling that they care. Jack Layton is grinning like a smug used-car salesman who just sold us the lemon of the century.

Coalition would be guided by all-star economic council - CTV:

A high-profile, four-person economic council would guide a Liberal-NDP coalition government on finance matters, CTV News has learned.

CTV’s Ottawa Bureau Chief Robert Fife reported Monday that the council would comprise Frank McKenna, Paul Martin, John Manley and Roy Romanow. ..

The nightmare continues.

Distasteful Green Shift dead

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

With all three Liberal leadership candidates distancing themselves in varying degrees from Dion’s Green Shift plan, and Bob Rae even making references to ‘cod liver oil’, I wonder how Jennifer Wright’s feeling these days?

Is her company’s name now tainted forevermore, thanks to Stephane Dion?

The strain of maintaining a ‘united front”

Friday, October 24th, 2008

As the Liberal caucus members emerged from their post-mortem meeting yesterday, they all put on their upbeat, scripted masks to face reporters and cameras.

The irony here is the timing of the release of Paul Martin’s book, which clearly blames Chretien for his failures and frustration.  We’ll see how long this little charade can be maintained.

Oh, how I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall at that caucus meeting!

We do get a few tidbits from various sources, such as the Record telling us that Karen Redman * received the most ‘heartfelt’ response. Of course, Karen was the Liberal Whip who told which MPs to stay away from crucial votes. Funny how so many Liberal voters ended up doing the same.

Suddenly, the Liberals see the error of their ways, and say that abstaining is no longer an option! I wonder how Karen feels about that today.

But Senator David Smith (perhaps unwittingly) summed up the reason for the feigned Liberal solidarity strategy:

When a reporter asked Senator David Smith what other issues besides leadership the caucus needed to discuss, he gave her a long, quizzical look.

"Get back in government," Smith finally responded.

It’s the power, stupid.

Canadian Values can only be Liberal

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

H/T to Canadianna for pointing out this great column by Christina Blizzard in today’s Sun - Defending ‘Canadian’ Values?

I hope to elaborate on this later, but a nasty cold is getting the better of me. Excuse me while I go cough up a lung.

* * * *

Update
: OMMAG said in comments that I didn’t have to elaborate on this, so I won’t. I just wanted to highlight what I felt was the salient part of this piece (because Sun links tend to disappear):

What is most troubling is the tone of McGuinty’s attack on private religious schools. He seems to imply they are somehow inferior.

I don’t think Jewish, Hindu or Muslim parents are going to make the kind of financial sacrifices necessary to keep their kids in private religious school if they weren’t getting results.

No, I think this issue is turning on McGuinty. It is insulting for people of other faiths to be told their religious schools threaten the social fabric — but Catholic schools don’t.

Most of all, it is just plain wrong to suggest that turning a blind eye to discrimination is a good ol’ Canadian value.

What I find most fascinating about this debate is that Multiculturalism is such a ‘Liberal’ value - encouraged diversity and such. Why the about-face, Dalton???

Green Plan Fall-out

Friday, April 27th, 2007

No surprises with John Baird’s environmental plan. He had no choice but to straddle that difficult line between trying to please the environmentalists and safeguarding the economy. Of course he received few kudos for his efforts.

I concur with Chantel Hebert, Don Martin and the incredibly insightful ChuckerCanuk that now is the time for the opposition to either put forward a motion of non-confidence or forever hold their flicking peace.

Speaking of Dalton, one wonders what climate-change nightmare is in store for us:

“It falls short of Canadian expectations. I think we can reach further and we intend to do that here in Ontario when we put out our climate change plan,” he said at the opening of the Green Living Show at Exhibition Place.

Gulp! With that let-them-eat-tofu majority government of his, there’s no telling what might happen to this poor province’s economy.

WHO’S out of touch?

Friday, April 27th, 2007

Lotto-gate, ‘Corner Store Trust’-gate, Colle-gate, ‘FLICK-OFF’-gate

The Ontario majority Liberal government is having to spend a lot of bothersome effort trying to divert public attention away from these pesky nuisances.

Accountability? Who needs that when you have a majority? You just vote down any attempt to be examined for questionable actions.

The public? They’re so self-absorbed they don’t even care what you do right, Dalton?

The first rule of politics for the McGuinty government is when confronted with an attack, fling back any mud you can grab. Anyone watching Oral Questions in the Ontario Legislature yesterday would know what I’m referring to. The government refuses to be accountable to the opposition and therefore by extension to the taxpayers.

But I always thought that being in charge of the public purse is a sacred trust - That it should be respected; not used as a party coffer.

However, I digress. In today’s Sun Christiana Blizzard relates how she was told by former CityTV reporter-turned Liberal media strategist Ben Chin that she was “out of touch” as was radio host Bill Carroll and the entire CFRB audience; the overwhelming majority of whom felt that Minister Broten should resign. Chin later apologized and said that he meant that John Tory was out of touch.

Well here’s a wake-up call, Ben. You can add a lot of MSM pundits and bloggers across the whole political spectrum to that list of folks who are out of touch. Also the National Post. I’m sure there are others.

So who’s really out of touch? I’ll let you decide. I’m just a dumb taxpayer who probably can’t be trusted.
