Gender Selection Hypocrisy in Canada

Canada’s Minister for Status of Women Rona Ambrose was outraged about a Canadian cultural publication carrying an ad for gender selection in the U.S. (Globe):

Rona Ambrose called on the Indo-Canadian Voice and other publishers to reject such ads, noting that the practice of pre-conception gender selection is illegal in Canada and perpetuates discrimination against girls that is prevalent in some cultural communities.

“At the end of the day, we are fighting sexism here,” Ms. Ambrose said in an interview Monday. “We’re fighting this perception that girls are not equal to boys.”

Canada prohibits sex selection of an in-vitro embryo, except in rare cases, via the 2004 Assisted Human Reproduction Act.

And yet gender selection post-conception [aka abortion] is perfectly legal; albeit not necessarily socially acceptable. But of course that would involve a moral judgement, and who has the right to inflict their moral values on others?

But how can we logically ignore the obvious? It still sexism when females are deliberately eliminated due to a preference for males.

And so in Canada we have a situation where the mere thought of pre-conception gender selection is abhorrent, but post-conception termination of a female fetus is a woman’s right!

How does anyone square that circle?

And please don’t tell me we need a law to ban the medical community from revealing the gender of a fetus. The Courts would challenge that in a heartbeat [see end of article], and the U.S. Medical Tourism industry would be only too happy to fill in the gaps.

It’s amazing the women involved this gender selection madness are allowing themselves to be part of it without a whimper. When women are being treated as nothing more than breeding machines it may be time for them to take a stand against it.

How do they expect to sustain their race if they produce only males?
Do they produce males here and arrange marriages from their homeland as a way to keep it going?
Whatever, if it’s not allowed in Canada, we can’t do a damned thing about them going to the US except we don’t have to pay for the procedure!

  2. Joseph says:

This should be reason enough to debate when human life begins, and provide protections to those least able to protect themselves.
This is discrimination based on gender.

    • Joanne says:

The irony is that the current ‘protections’ apply only to hypothetical, pre-conceived females.

No protection at all after conception when there is an actual human life developing.

  3. Bec says:

I think this trend boils down to a class system within some communities. Women weak, subservient… Men, strong, in control.
If that’s not reason enough for the radical feminists to get engaged, nothing will.

On a positive note though, if these people are so desperate to have this procedure done in the US at least they should be paying for it so let’s make darn sure that Canadian taxpayers are not being hosed under the disguise of something else.

As well, it’s really hard for me to believe that women BORN and RAISED in Canada would participate in this aberration. Thus possibly a reason to put a strong time line parameters around new immigrants qualifying for socialized Canadian medicine.

You know when something is wrong, just plain wrong to start with, I am speaking of abortion.
How can anything good come from it.
So if these people are bound and determined to only have male offspring who will they marry?
The fabled “right to choose” and the sacrament of abortion have not made our society any better. IMO
It is ironic that the feminists who have this “option” are the most at risk in today’s world.
Mother nature has a very hard bosom.
Fast forward will the communities who are embracing this practice find that their young men will be marrying outside their race and community?
Will the shortage of marriage aged females make the practice of dowry reverse with the males paying the big bucks?
I do not like what I am seeing at all, just my opinion.
One more example of be very careful what you wish for.
I remember reading that a miscarriage occurring naturally did not threaten the future health of a woman.
An abortion gave greatly increased risk of certain cancers but the study was widely derided because it went against popular opinion, anyone else recall that?
Just some thoughts on a Sunday morning and a concern for those who have no “choice” or voice, or apparently “rights”.
    Matthew 19:14

Did you know that several years ago, women who had natural miscarriages were lumped in with women having abortions. And before a woman could have a D&C after said miscarriage she had to have 3 doctors examine her and agree to the procedure.

Another great post Joanne. Shining a bright light on why Canadians and especially women need to have a rational debate.

I enjoyed that clip. Good for J.C. Watts.

I also went on to listen to the journalists discuss our Prime Minister’s first year of majority government. They were going downhill negatively, each one outdoing the other in negativity. Finally, right toward the end, Jennifer Ditchburn, of all people, said, “Well, to say something positive”… and then she had a few moments to give her point of view (can’t remember what her point was). Possibly she was realizing how unfair the others were (Gardner, Gloria Galloway, Craig and his sidekick).

  8. Mary T says:

Watching and listening and reading the abortion argument, I have another idea.
Many years ago, when this first come up, I received a letter from the liberal justice minister, in response to a question I had posed, and he wrote back saying under no circumstances would a liberal government ever allow abortion in Canada.
Another letter I received was from a pro abortion mp who said it was cheaper to have a woman abort, as it was a one time expense, whereas a live baby would cost the treasury thousands of dollars re family allowance, medical needs, and future OAS payments.
Perhaps the budget officer could give us some figures re what it costs for a baby, child, senior citizen till death.
Neither of those responses mentioned the economic benefits of said live birth, or the people needed to educate, train, hire said person. Or the economic benefit of all those birthday presents, Christmas presents, and so many other things, like clothes, toys, bikes, etc.
And most of all the taxes these live births would pay during their lifetime.
