Obamaguinty is scary in stereo

I’ve often thought of Dalton McGuinty as a kind of Obama Mini-me; especially when he has the sleeves of his white shirt rolled up in the exact manner of his hero.

Their ruthless pursuit of green energy at the expense of economic common sense is one obvious comparison.

But it’s also interesting that both leaders are now alienating Catholics in what once was their traditional base, by attempting to force behaviour according to ideology of the state rather than faith.

With Obama, the battleground is forced employer health care coverage for items not condoned by the Catholic church including the morning-after pill.

In Ontario, Dalton McGuinty’s Government is trying to bully Catholic School boards into providing anti-bullying clubs with a preference for those specifically dealing with Gays.

Both men seem to be caught in the middle of a clash of values between mutually antagonistic rights’ groups (i.e.  Gay & Feminist activists vs. traditional Catholicism).

And both seem to be doing their best to eradicate what they perceive to be a bigoted attitude by legislating it out of existence – even if it treads on the toes of religious freedom.

This could have some political fallout in both countries.

Or else Big Government might be successful in stifling the very spirit that fosters concern for others in our western society – as Ross Douthat notes in the New York Times:

The White House attack on conscience is a vindication of health care reform’s critics, who saw exactly this kind of overreach coming. But it’s also an intimation of a darker American future, in which our voluntary communities wither away and government becomes the only word we have for the things we do together.

A chilling way for a supposed democracy to end up – on either side of the border.

Update

Outstanding column by Michael GersonObama plays his Catholic allies for fools (Washington Post):

…And the astounding ambition of this federal precedent will soon be apparent to every religious institution. Obama is claiming the executive authority to determine which missions of believers are religious and which are not — and then to aggressively regulate institutions the government declares to be secular. It is a view of religious liberty so narrow and privatized that it barely covers the space between a believer’s ears.

Obama’s decision also reflects a certain view of liberalism. Classical liberalism was concerned with the freedom to hold and practice beliefs at odds with a public consensus. Modern liberalism uses the power of the state to impose liberal values on institutions it regards as backward…

Yes that last statement could certainly be applied to the Ontario Liberal Party.

More from Michelle MalkinFirst, they came for the Catholics:

As always, tolerance is a one-way street in the Age of Obama. “Choice” is in the eye (and iron fist) of the First Amendment usurper.

( * * * )

…The ultimate goal is to shut down healthcare providers — Catholic healthcare institutions employ about 540,000 full-time workers and 240,000 part-time workers — whose religious views cannot be tolerated by secular zealots and radical social engineers.

Is it any surprise their counterparts in the “Occupy” movement have moved from protesting “Wall Street” to harassing pro-life marchers in Washington, DC, and hurling condoms at Catholic school girls in Rhode Island? Birds of a lawless, bigoted feather bully together.

It is indeed a chilling prospect to see the roots of our society and our justice system (Judeo-Christian) bombarded daily. Ezra Levant on Sun TV exposed Menshi, the Calgary mayor as a “hypocrite” for allowing 30 police to evict Christians and their pastor from a peaceful public gathering. Yet, he allowed the “Occupy” crowd to protest and break laws for 2 months at the same location while the police looked the other way.
We need to expose this bigotry by politicians and special interest groups—continuously, in order to raise awareness.

    • Liz J says:

We all know the politics of the Left is rampant at all levels and throughout the education systems/ institutions of higher learning.

It’s acceptable to protest or take your cause to the streets peacefully only if they happen to agree with the cause. Christianity is not one of them, it’s somehow more offensive to more people than say a march for Hamas, or anything at all against the Conservative government. Funny too only Christians and Conservatives are accused of bigotry by the same elements of our SNAFU’d society thanks to ignoring years of Socialist creep.

This has got to be fought tooth and nail everywhere we find it, it will take a while, it didn’t happen overnight.

If the Liberals were in power and going with the pipeline there would be no protests, it would be done.

      • Jen says:

Not only that Lizj, if the oilsands was located in Quebec or the maritimes, no noise from radical protestors nor a murmur from Megan Leslie, suzuki, elizabeth may nor any outsider protestors or businesses will dare utter a word against quebec or the maritimes.

You never know lizj, the opposition parties and their adored media will get what they have yearn for but when and only when they are in government… not now.

      • frmgrl says:

If the Liberals were in power and going with the pipeline there would be no protests, it would be done.

Exactly! Reminds me of what Ezra Levant said on the Rutherford show just a little while ago about how there was no problem when Libs were in power and Omar Khadar was sitting in Gitmo and nothing from the apologists in the media, the law society and the Libs and Dippers. Nobody cared about him. Yet as soon as Stephen Harper and the CPC took power they all of a sudden they became concerned over Omar and of course he became a folk hero of the left.

        • Jen says:

Omar khadr will no doubt be a guest on cbc. You never know frmgrl, the opposition parties and cbc will wear pins with Omar’s face on it.

    • Sammy says:

Jan,it is also interesting that same Mayor Nenshi has called in a psychologist to deal with the ‘dysfunction’ in Calgary city council! Read Rick Bell’s latest in Cal.Sun.I am waiting for someone (cbc) to use the left’s tactic of last resort to accuse the councillors in opposition to Nenshi of being…wait for it…RACIST!!!!!!!
O/T here, but the msm and Lib/Dip coalition has really gone into super-duper hyper overdrive against PMSH.They are dragging out the fear factor re abortion,death-penalty,pensions etc.and it is just sickening.I find QP pretty much unwatchable anymore.

  2. Martin says:

The Ottawa McGuinty family has long been identified with Catholic School Board politics; Daltons’s wife has been a teacher in that system. If he now is slapping down the political base which first supported him, if must mean that he is not contemplating running again. This makes for very troubling times for Ont, as a Liberal lame duck looking for a legacy is a dangerous animal. Think of Pierre Trudeau 1980-84.

    • Richco says:

The McGuinty were able to choose a Catholic school for their kids outside of their catchment area and at one time that particular school’s parent community backed by some teachers and administration wanted to become a Charter School because it was superior to the other schools and didn’t want to deal with the board. I remember the heated board meetings.

This issue will not go away in Ontario.

  3. storm says:

sounds like the crusades are fast approaching again thanks to the bleeding heart leftist twits who tore this country apart in the first place ……start cleaning the rust off those swords folks, we’re going to need them

    • Liz J says:

Don’t laugh, we are either importing the antagonists for a replay of the crusades or we are allowing the Left to impose their ideology to create it. Whatever it is our government currently has to tread lightly in order not to rile the masses any more than they already are at the fact the Conservatives are in power. They need to gradually get back to our roots, our core values, it’s called going back to have a future for this country. To do it they need to end Multiculturalism as a first priority, it’s a killer to all we were built on.

      • storm says:

hi liz j – I didn’t mean it as something to be funny – I truly believe
that’s the road we are traveling right now with the multiculturalism
eggshells we seem to be treading on these days. people are so busy
trying not to offend other cultures that we are losing sight of our own identities of what this country was originally founded on.
Religion has no place in politics and never should; it did not work in the past so what makes any government think they know better!
I am in complete agreement with you that we should put an end to multiculturalism as priority one – learn to assimilate like immigrants did in the past or don’t bother to come here. maybe they should bring back some of those old sayings and clichés ” when in Rome” ……

        • Liz J says:

Sorry, storm, didn’t mean to imply you considered it to be funny!

What I did find knee slapping again today was the HOC period of useless questions from the so-called opposition who are really closer to bad slap-stick comedians.

Today we had BoBo Rae harping on about OAS, trying to make out OAS was going to be cut and Granny and Gramps would be losing their pensions and eating cat food. If the Liberals are serious about getting back on track they need to be at least factual, they need to get real. Rae is proving he’s not up to the job he is so desperately seeking.

          • Sammy says:

Yeah but the Libs have badges now Liz,saying ‘hands off pensions!’..CBC has made a big show of them all day.Hmmm, wonder who paid for those?

          • Frances says:

Have you looked at the ingredients of cat food lately? It’s probably an improvement on a lot of people food.

  4. Bubba Brown says:

“The NDPQ-F and the Liberals are wearing buttons that say Hands Off Pensions”???
I can only assume the pensions they are defending their OWN pensions LOL.
Seriously BoBo Rae needs clown shoes he after seconded Ruby Dhalla’s private members bill c-428 which would have given pensions to immagrants after 3 years
NDPQ-F deputy second in command Libby Davies private members bill c-538 would have done the same. she tabled that what 6 or 7 times hard to keep track.
The NDPQ-F and the Liberals are looking more hypocritical and stupid than usual.
Why has no one reminded BoBo Rae of his hypocritical duplicity? Media? Ezra are you there?
Just one more Gotcha maybe just maybe this will be the one.
The Media is even loosing intrest BOBo Rae has burnt all his hair off.
What can these fools possibly do for an encore?
As for defending oneself and ones beliefs.
    The world has not changed much since Jesus turned to the Apostles at the end of the Last Supper and said;
“But now, he said take your money and a travelers bag, and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one”
I think this is going to get very interesting folks.

  5. Bec says:

Dalton was a decade ahead of Obama in moronic, shmoozing the public, cr@p.

Liberal, true liberal thinking, is one of a band wagon. They jump on it. When we critically analyze “liberals”, they ARE NOT creative or observant or frankly, all that intelligent . They take ‘movements’, obsess over them and then bet the farm on that one obsession.
Any real success that the Chretien liberals had was taken from the Reform and any real success that Dalton may eventually have will be taken from the PC’s in Ontario, imo. Not because he’s that bright but because he really is the biggest bomb (other than Rae) in Ontario’s history.

Obama, is a whole different thing in the US because he has something else in his arsenal (other than DUMB), race ……….but yes, based on how the Ignatieff team tried to ride on the coat-tails of the hopey changey thing, so obviously is the Ontario strategic team.

O/T Not that you guys haven’t mentioned Ezra, but nobody has mentioned Ezra’s new book about the wee terrorist. I just bought it and LET’s MAKE IT A BEST SELLER! Tell Ottawa that we have no interest in this guy coming home….selling this book will send a message, imo!

  6. Liz J says:

Sammy @ 3:41pm, CBC will always give the Liberals a free ride no matter how low they go. Wearing badges with a message that isn’t factual will soon be in the trash cans, however, the Conservative government will have to put out the facts as quickly as possible, even though they’ll be blocked from doing so by the media who will not listen to facts.

  7. Sammy says:

Good Lord! The cbc hyping the Senator’s comments re the death penalty, screaming,”it has reopened the debate?” HUH? Nice how the cbc is showing tweets now from Peter Julian NDP MP re the OAS..yup,totally non-biased.
BTW,Brian Lilley is going to have anothe expose on the cbc tonite! Get yer beer and popcorn ready kids!
Bec,that is a great idea for ALL of us to get out and buy Ezra’s book..put it at #1 on the bestsellers list!!
Also, did you catch Turmel’s hysteric’s re the death penalty in QP today? Her screeching makes me want to set my hair on fire.

  8. Sammy says:

Evan Solomon: the Senators remarks were VERY controvesial! Sparked a heated debate in HofC today…he then went on to add in rather offhand way that the Sen.daughter was raped and murdered…I say,Evan STFU!
Yippee! Court here in Man.has turned down the cbc’s attempt to shut down Peter Nygaard’s lawsuit against them. .story link at Natnewswatch. I hope Peter sues their asses off, only problem is,we the taxpayer would likely end up paying the bill.

    • Bec says:

YES, the Senator’s daughter was raped and murdered and I get his emotional outburst. In fact I agree entirely with the Senator. If it was me, I’d be a lynch mob too. In fact they are lucky it’s NOT me!

  9. wilson says:

    Davies in the Commons:
“The Prime Minister claims he’s not reopening these debates and yet he has a trio of backbench Conservatives eagerly pushing a challenge to a woman’s right to choose and he’s playing hide and seek with funding for international maternal health organizations,” Ms. Davies said. “So, does the Prime Minister still claim his government is not reopening the debate on abortion? Or is he finally giving way to his fringe backbenchers?”

death penalty, abortion and starving pensioners (sigh)

    • Jen says:

One thing the ndpqf would not allow it members to do is voted their own conscience. Even the newcomers are being ordered around.

The ndpqf voted against the pensioners.

      • wilson says:

Chantel Hebert and others here, suggest the CPC plan is to invite the LibDippers to make a mountain out of a molehill, so as when the actual plan is tabled, CPC appears fair and balanced.

        • Sammy says:

I just read Chantal’s new post wilson (just up at Natnews) and it is a good one indeed! I think PMSH IS playing these morons like a violin..and a Strad at that.

  10. Jen says:

Our troops were called ‘WAR CRIMINALS echoed and re0echoed by the CBC and so far none of the ndpqf has stepped down.
The senator makes a statement re-’to rope in a cell’ and all hell breaks loose.

Now you know why criminals and terrorists like the opposition parties and the msm more than our soldiers to react this way. Man they are despicable.

    • Jen says:

Now you know why criminals and terrorists like the opposition parties and the msm more than our soldiers to react this way. Man they are despicable.

Correction, ‘now you know why the criminals and terrorists are well liked and cared for by the opposition parties and their media….more so than they care for our soldiers’.

    • Martin says:

How about this non-controversial remark by Lib Senator Celine Hervieux-Payette a few years ago
“We are dealing with a Conservative government that manipulates the Canadian public by putting its party`s logo on government cheques, models the symbols used by our Olympic athletes on its own logo, sweeps reports on torture in Afghanistan under the carpet and conducts misleading advertising campaigns … and CTV is paid to broadcast these schemes.”
      The whole story is here:
      http://www.bloggingcanadians.ca/ConservativeBlogs/liberal-senator-celine-hervieux-payette-goes-off-the-deep-end-again-/
I don’t recall this being discussed too much on the consensus media.

  11. Gabby in QC says:

I’ve been busy today, not much time to read others’ comments … so maybe someone else has said this already: Evan Solomon is a like a little boy who learned his first bad word, so he wants to repeat it over & over & over again.

    What am I talking about?

In “discussing” Senator Boisvenu’s comment about making a rope available to un-rehabilitative prisoners, Solomon just had to play Pat Martin’s riposte, not once but twice, because the video did not play properly, the audio was inaudible, so of course Solomon wanted a replay of Pat Martin’s words — that paragon of subtlety’s words just had to be heard. Solomon was shocked! shocked! by the senator’s words, but was titillated by Martin’s spewings.

I also find it the height of hypocrisy for Nycole Turmel and others in the opposition to be outraged by the thought of urging murderers to off themselves, while many of them on the “progressive” side of the aisle are in favour of assisted suicide, not to mention a “woman’s right to choose”.

    • Fay says:

Evan Solomon disgusts me, he is purposely omitting the fact that this senator’s daughter was raped and murdered by a repeat offender.
Power and Politics is stacked with left leaning panelists and Evan does his best to shut down debate that supports the conservatives crime bill.

      • Sammy says:

It gets better! Solomon is going to give Pat Martin a chance to ‘respond’ coming up on P&P! I am truly ashamed that this moron is from my province.

        • Sammy says:

Also, for that leftwing LUNATIC to refer to the Dad of a raped and murdered daughter as an ‘assho*e’ is just appalling.

          • Sammy says:

Martin just on P&P,and is ‘sticking by his remarks’..that the Sen.is ‘an assho*e’ and a ‘Conservative idiot’..nice work Pat. Evan then asked him if this has ‘reopened the debate?’ Of course Pat states,’indeed it has, thru the back door, just like abortion!’

          • Fay says:

I missed that Sammy. Pat Martin called this Senator an ass..le???? Pat Martin needs to apologize for this. What ever happened to the compassionate left?

          • Joanne says:

            That’s tweetable.

          • Sammy says:

Fay,Martin called the Sen.that as well as a “Conservative idiot”..and even AFTER Solomon reminded him about his dreadful loss,Martin still refused to back down.

          • Joanne says:

That’s why I never watch anything to do with Pat Martin. I just change the channel.

          • Joanne says:

And BTW Solomon just eats this stuff up. He is despicable too.

      • Sammy says:

Jo,I really think Solomon is 10x worse than Martin as he has a responsibility to the people that PAY him,to present a FAIR,and well-balanced information program, and he fails miserably every…single…day!

  12. Liz J says:

The irrelevant opposition are shocked at the time of day if it’s mentioned by a Conservative. If ever we needed any proof the media is an arm of the opposition we are seeing it now. They’re all rambling off in all directions trying to hit a bullseye and can’t come close to it, as an example they’re still trying to get the abortion thing going. It’s all pure desperation politics and of no value to anyone.

    • wilson says:

      Well, the NDPQ is fading fast in Quebec and are having a long drawn out pathetic leadership race;
and as (liberal) Rob Silver pointed out, all that cheering about the Libs numbers above 23% with BooB Rae at the helm is silly, cuz, those are the same as the bottom 5% of polling numbers for both Dion and Ignatieff….. nothing to cheer about.

  13. Richco says:

checking in here every evening just confirms why I’ve stopped watching Question Period and pretty much all other offerings on network tv except SNN. Seriously there is nothing the opposition of media twits can do to the Harper gov’t. Nothing.

  14. Martin says:

I tuned CBC on at 2:10 to watch a bit of QP, to see Carolyn and Rosemary tut tuting about controversial remarks by Consevative Senator. I had never heard of Sen Boisvenue before, but by 5:00 he had become a prominent CPC spokesman. I had P&P on without sound, and I gather most of the show was diverted to this controversy.
The power panel today included 4 Liberal/NDP partisans plus Janet Ecker. The discussion was abysmal even for P&P standards. For some of these commentators like todays NDP woman, it is little more than a chance to repeat Harper, renew death penalty, womens’ right to choose and right wing social conservative in the same sentence.
This is not political debate, it is not even high school conversation, I don’t know what one would call it, but it is a sad spectacle of what passes for dialogue today on CBC.

  15. wilson says:

    ”Statscan’s chief economic analyst quits”

oh, big deal. People quit their jobs everyday.
This bureaucrat was in public service for 36 years, maybe he figured it was time to get out before that big fat taxpayer funded pension got cut.!

  16. Sammy says:

Beauty! Adler, and Tom Brodbeck (the BEST crime reporter at Wpg.Sun) discussing the Sen.remarks..the header at bottom of screen?? “Assisted crook-icide!”

    • Bubba Brown says:

So the Senator suggested a “stout rope” is that really any worse that Peeair Trudeaus “Faint Hope” just askin’

      • storm says:

hey I’m all for the stout rope – saves tax payer’s lots of money
from the many appeals ( not to mention severely depleted paychecks for the many useless lawyers )
or better still once the long gun registry is gone why don’t we just
shoot them all and let God sort them out —- that takes care of a lot
of bi*ching from the opposition on a number of levels ie. religion,

Yeah, James Moore has been very disappointing on this file.

Just saw CTV National News with Lisa LaPhlegm and of the 3 big stories on the Hill today — Tories under fire on OAS, CBC under fire for its use of taxpayers’ dollars on porn, a Tory senator under fire for “controversial” remarks he made — Lisa and Bob Fife did 2 of them but took a pass on the third… can you guess which of the 3 they took a pass on??

I guess they only do stories on pornography and gov’t related news when the opposition accuse Tories of looking at pornography on their smart phones, which turned out to be a lie, but proved too delicious a story for these Harper-Haters in the media to pass up on. And more egregious than that “news story”, today’s involves the wasting of taxpayers dollars… again, I guess they only do stories on misuse of those dollars when it’s by Tony Clement.

Sure CTV can smile at yet again giving SNN the finger (that’s what this is really about: not assisting SNN in any way), but what they sacrifice in the process is telegraphing to Canadians that they’re in the business of selective reporting… that when SNN says “we do the stories that the others won’t” that there is truth in that.

For CTV, it would’ve been better for them to just bite the bullet and do a story they obviously don’t want to do instead of risk being seen as engaging in selective news reporting. Such practices have a corrosive effect on their credibility over time as Canadians know they won’t get the full story from them, choosing (being forced to actually) to get the full story elsewhere, such as from the SNN team… eventually, Canadians will stop going back to the likes of CTV, CBC and Global, because we can all now see what BS artists they truly are.

And you know all the others you don’t see are there too as they all seem to hang out in the foyer. It will be fun to watch CTV’s QP on Sunday morning too, watching Oliver, Newman, Ditchburn, Gardner and friends follow in the footsteps of James Moore, making SNN, and not the CBC, the target of their scorn.

It was 2009, and the authoritarian regime in Rwanda was facing mounting criticism of its human-rights record. It was accused of censoring the media, suppressing freedom, shutting down newspapers and creating a climate of fear. Surely Minister Moore will be hauled up on the carpet by the NDPQ for not making sure the porn stars were from Quebec!!!

  25. Jen says:

NDPQF mps want an extension(raise) to the CBC’s own $1.6billion.
Liberals said that CBC should be exempted from the cuts.

How much money did the liberals take from the canadians seniors:
    56billions
    2billion
    40million which is still missing
Some of libs still owe EC.

    • Liz J says:

Yeah, we haven’t heard a peep about the failed liberal leadership candidates who owe EC. Have they been written off as bad debts ? I think we have a right to know, the dweeb in charge of EC will never keep us posted, he would however if it were Conservatives who owed the money.

      • Jen says:

Remember when megan leslie ask joe oliver a few questions which he answered but not to her liking. Well, on evans solomon show. Evans ask joe oliver why he didn’t didn’t answer megan leslie’s questions.

Remember when Pat Martin on Evans solomon show said flat out to evans “the liberals took $56billion from the EI funds….”
Did Evans upon hearing this piece of news turn to the liberal sitting there “Why did your party take 56billions dollars from the EI funds?”
Evans instead, ignored PM’s statement. The ndpqf seeing how afraid Evans is of the libs to not ask such an important question must have realized right there and then the cbc reporters and talk show hosts like evans can be used at any time place or decade by/for the ndpqf very own agenda.

When 6 out of 10 new Canadians were no-shows to a re-affirmation event,
civil servants (gotta give them brownie points for trying their best) were stand-ins for them.
No one told SunTV nor the Ministry.

“The civil servants made some decisions without informing us or Sun News Network,” said Kenney spokeswoman Candice Malcolm.

“Their decisions were well intentioned, however, we wish they had made different ones. We will make sure this does not happen again.”

  27. wilson says:

One more thing. Sorry for so many posts Joanne.

”Is Harper backing down from OAS reform?”

This is how the media play their gotcha games.
Assert stories on assumptions/opinions not fact, then when the truth is about to come out, they insist PM Harper is backing down…. from their false stories and Opps accusations.

Wonder if they ever take assessment of their own crediability…. or is it journalism principles don’t matter if you can smear a Conservative.

True to form, no surprise,we know what we’re dealing with.

We better keep our ears on the promises being made by NDP leadership candidates as well. To this point Nathan Cullen is about as bad as it gets, that guy scares the hell out of me, he looks wild eyed to top it off as he speaks about his opposition to the pipeline. Something extremely odd would have to transpire before that sort of individual would ever get power, thank God for that.

BTW. reviewing Dave R on the OAS PENSION etc has given me more of a relaxed mind than listening to CBC CTV CPAC and opposition parties.

If the lib/dip care deeply for the seniors give back the $56billion , 2billion and the 40million dollars.

According to David R in one of tapes said “no government has taken these changes reform because we never had an economist for a PM- until now”

    • Richco says:

Yes and for once in a very long time we have a forum like SNN that WILL fight back. That’s why I can’t understand that given a clear choice for viewing many still hang on CBC or CTV. It’s no longer necessary because the good folks at SNN will fight back as many here have been doing for so very long.

I have every one of the journalists at SNN on my email mailing list and think nothing of firing off my opinion and support.

We settled far too long for being quiet about misrepresentation in the media but not any more. There are champions for us out there.

Kudos to Rick Dykstra for refusing to let Evan Solomon run roughshod over him. As usual, Solomon asked the Conservative a question and bombarded him with another one before Dykstra had a chance to finish the original question. Solomon quoted “reliable sources” to argue that bureaucrats replaced Canadian citizens who were scheduled to re-affirm their Canadian citizenship.

Another kudo to Dykstra for using a favourite phrase of Solomon’s “to be fair” — which Solomon clearly is not.

My conclusion? The issue, the way it sounds to me according to Solomon, is not so much about bureaucrats replacing absent Canadian citizens but about the fact that Sun TV was going to film the event for inclusion in their broadcast.

  44. Sammy says:

GO TO CBC and vote in the Qof the day! BTW,why in God’s name,is the cbc using a little story like the immigration ceremony as the LEAD on P&P? There was a huge child-porn bust today, the world economy in a mess, wars and unrest all over the world..we are still technically in Afghanistan, and THIS sh*t is the lead story?? Give me a break.

  45. Liz J says:

Looks like Ezra is going after James Moore, appears James is the best friend the CBC could have at this time. It may be time for the PM to have a word with him.

    • jon says:

It’s one thing for Moore to be put in the awkward position to have to defend the CBC, but to turn on SNN, attacking one of their reporters for, you know, doing her job? Well, that was just plain foolish, especially knowing how Levant has throughly destroyed him so many times on previous shows. I haven’t seen Levant yet but cannot wait for it to air again tonight.

  46. Gabby in QC says:

An addendum on Solomon: he used to come across like such a nice well-informed man when he used to have one-on-one interviews with different authors, even if they were far-out on the political spectrum. Now he comes across as simply a spokesman for various “progressive” causes, like the “climate change is going to destroy the planet” meme. A moderator’s political POV on a program such as Power & Politics should not be patently obvious to the audience like it is on this program.

Solomon is entitled to have his own political POV, but it should be kept private and should not influence the amount of time given to members of political parties. Equal time & equal treatment are in order, Mr. Solomon.

    • jon says:

Solomon’s bias always comes shining through when he joins in the attack of whichever Tory minister or MP is on his panel, always interjecting, always cutting them off before they can complete their thoughts. When the opposition MPs are attacking the gov’t, his silencing is deafening.

Solomon attempts to defend himself by claiming that it only appears that he’s harder on the Tories but that’s only because they’re the gov’t and have to be held to account… but if you watch his provincial segments, particularly when he’s interviewing McGuinty Liberals, such as FM Dwight Duncan, he’s there to sell him and his gov’t, not hold them to account… so his claim of holding “gov’t” to account is a crock. End of story.

I never saw today’s P&P. Did he do any segments for the online porn controversy? Probably not. It’s beyond me how any person with a conscience can look into the camera and pretend to be unaware of the story while knowing full well that had any other ministry been caught in such a scandal, he’d be all over the story.

Solomon’s a joke, a complete disgrace. He has no ethics or integrity, which ensures one thing though… a very, VERY long career at the state broadcaster.

  47. Sammy says:

      • wilson says:

I think PMSH needs to have a wee talk with a couple of Ministers who have grown some very big heads.

  54. jon says:

As this story drags on, more disturbing than the CBC’s flagrant abuse of taxpayers’ dollars IMO is the deafening silence from the other members of the Selective Reporting Media. What is there reason for not reporting on the story? Are they unaware of it? Let’s dismiss that one. Is it there contention that no wrong doing was done by the state broadcaster? They may believe that but it still doesn’t change that it’s a story — one that they MUST report, that is if they want to retain a trust with Canadians, which apparently they don’t seem to care in establishing let alone retaining. Moreover, wrongdoing or not by the CBC on this matter is for US, not THEM, to decided.

There is one positive aspect to the Selective Reporting Media hiding this story from Canadians and that is that SNN has now — if there was any doubt before — established themselves as the only ones we can trust to do ALL stories related to the goings-on on the Hill… that’s the cred you get when you do all of 3 big stories on parliament Hill today instead of 2-out-of-3 as the Selective Reporting Media clearly has.

Their credibility will suffer in both the short and long term as a result, and their audience share along with it… that’s something in the end all Canadians will benefit from.

    • Fay says:

It is obvious to me that selective reporting hid the sponsorship scandal just like they are now trying to hide the CBC porn site.
      Thank God for SUN TV.
James Moore has lowered himself to the media party level and needs to be demoted.

  55. wilson says:

I’ve been doing a slow burn all night.
First a failed Kenny photo op which drags SunNN into the mess, as the main target of airhead Ditchburn.
Then Moore’s ‘just between you and me’ talk that SunNN boss will turf them all as soon as he tops out in english tv in Quebec.

    SunNN is our conservative tv,
    not a CPC play thing.

  56. Gabby in QC says:

At the risk of angering some of you here … well, here goes. I disagree with some of you here on the issue of “CBC programming porn” and the calls for Heritage Minister James Moore’s demotion.

First of all, it’s not exactly accurate to say that the CBC is programming porn. From what I’ve been able to gather, a Radio-Canada website streams quite a few francophone TV shows from French speaking countries and from Quebec. The program Hard is only one of those shows available free on demand on the internet.

So, what’s the difference, you may say. Well, although both the CBC & Radio-Canada are funded by taxpayers under the umbrella of the Broadcasting Act, they are practically two different entities, so it would be fairer and more accurate to say that Radio-Canada broadcasts that show, among many others which are not porn-based. The show is not shown on RDI, the Radio-Canada equivalent of CBC News(world), as some have said. It is broadcast on the internet, on a website called Tou.TV.

According to the TOU.TV blog site http://blogue.tou.tv/?cat=7, Hard is a series similar to Weeds.
“Weeds is an American comedy series … The central character is Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker), a widowed mother of two boys who begins selling marijuana to support her family after her husband dies suddenly of a heart attack. Over the course of the show, she and her family become more entangled in illegal activities. …” [from Wiki]. The difference between the two aforementioned shows is that the widow in Hard wades into the realm of “adult movies”.

Don’t get me wrong. I’ve watched neither show, nor do I intend to, but the porn is part of the plot of a series, not porn for its own sake.

I’m of two minds on this issue of broadcasting porn, even if it’s limited to the internet. On the conservative-libertarian side of the political spectrum, we often hear the argument that people’s freedom of expression allows them to do and say and write things which may be offensive to others but people should be able to express those ideas, so isn’t this kind of show an example of that kind of thinking, even if the show is not necessarily produced by conservative libertarians? I don’t know anything about the ideological stance of anyone associated with the show, although I would venture a guess they’re not puritans.

See, I have a difficult time reconciling the notion of freedom of expression, as espoused by some conservative libertarians, with the notion that shows like Hard should not be aired. Again, for the record, I do not believe in absolute freedom of expression. I believe there are times that people should have enough sense to refrain from expressing exactly what they’re thinking. I can think or do something that may be offensive to others but I don’t have to say it or express it, especially in the public sphere.

Unfortunately, the show Hard may simply reflect trends in our western societies, where practically anything goes. It may reflect societal “norms” more than we think. A few years ago, when I first began visiting blogs, I was more than surprised at the number of conservative commenters on one blog in particular who expressed their support for these Supreme Court decisions on “bawdy houses”:
    [From Wiki]
“R. v. Labaye, [2005] 3 S.C.R. 728, 2005 SCC 80, was a decision by the Supreme Court of Canada on criminal indecency. The decision upheld consensual group sex and swinging activities in a club and alleged bawdy-house as being consistent with personal autonomy and liberty. Labaye was accompanied by a sister case, R. v. Kouri.”
“R. v. Kouri 2005 SCC 81 (CanLII), was a decision of the Supreme Court of Canada that, along with its sister case R. v. Labaye, established that harm is the sole defining element of indecency in Canadian criminal law. The case involved a club in which couples engaged in group sex; the club was alleged to be a “common bawdy-house” (a house in which indecency or prostitution occurs). The acquittal was upheld by the Supreme Court.”

I wish such places as “bawdy houses” did not exist, that community standards would be — how shall I say it? — loftier than group sex, but the reality is that our society has apparently changed its standards, accepting behaviours that years ago would be considered socially unacceptable. Just as single mothers, divorce, and common law spouses have become commonplace, the same seems to be underway for legalization of pot, prostitution, assisted suicide, and consumption of porn.

Yes, I know, both CBC & Radio-Canada are funded by taxpayers. But does that mean taxpayers should have a say on content and that they should have the right to censor what is shown? Isn’t that what Ezra Levant fought against, the idea that someone should be able to censor him, not allowing him to print the infamous Mohammed cartoons? Isn’t that why he was/is so critical of the Alberta Human Rights Commission and other such tribunals?

The tricky part is the public funding of the CBC & Radio-Canada. Although I’m critical of some CBC personalities, I don’t share the opinion that it should be shut down or completely defunded simply because I disagree with some of those personalities. As I’ve previously argued elsewhere, perhaps the PBS model could be adopted — a combination of public and private funding — or maybe the CBC should face cuts to some of its funding, like all other funding the government doles out. But calling for the CBC’s demise is a non-starter for me, as is calling for the demotion of a minister simply because I may disagree with his defence of it.

BTW, Conservative PM R.B. Bennett created the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission in 1932; it eventually became the CBC.
