Let us honour the victims

Zainab.  Sahar.  Geeti.  Rona.

You only wanted to enjoy the freedom that Canada offers.

May you now finally be able to rest in peace.

Endnote

We must send out a strong message to prospective immigrants that they need not come here if they consider females to be mere chattel.

Here in Canada women are equal to men and we have laws designed to protect them – unless of course they happen to be preborn.

Update

Another lesson going forward should be taken from Christie Blatchford’s excellent coverage of this story:

Let that be a lesson for Canadian police, women’s rights activists, social workers and the like: The oppression of girls and women wears different faces, and some of them are beautiful, not battered, and some of them are beautifully made up. Birds in gilded cages are still in cages.

It was the very sort of societal prejudice which ended up leaving the girls even more vulnerable and protecting the Shafia parents and Hamed. If the trio felt entitled and safe to do what they wanted, who could blame them?

Virtually every time Shafia and Yahya encountered Canadian authorities, they bamboozled them.

The family arrived in Canada under Quebec’s “immigrant investor” program – investors put up a chunk of cash interest-free in exchange for permanent residency – and three months later, no questions asked, brought in the other wife, Rona Amir Mohammad, as a domestic servant on a visitor’s visa.

The parents were called in by school officials a number of times, but Yahya would weep, Shafia would rail furiously, and no action would be taken.

When the school called in child welfare, the same thing would happen: Denials, rage and tears from these affluent parents worked in this country. All their experience with institutional Canada gave them no reason to imagine that a smallcity police force wouldn’t be similarly stymied.

It explains the collective arrogance they brought to their crime; they simply imagined they would get away with it.

We must address this problem of how political-correctness tends to undermine our Canadian values.

BTW this particular link to Blatchford’s column contains a timeline at the end.

Let us also remember to honour the members of the jury.

More victims of ‘honour’ killings here.

And this is disturbing: Afghan man kills wife for giving birth to daughterSun

I like what the lead Kingston investigator said on the news last night. He said that we shouldn’t be wasting another minute talking about the murderers because they don’t deserve the attention. He followed by saying that those deserving our attention now are the four victims and how we can stop this from happening.

Blatchford’s column is very good today.

Glad for your post this morning Joanne.

    • Joanne says:

Thanks Richco. I heard the Kingston investigator’s reaction too and that is what actually inspired this post.

  2. Michael Harkov says:

What the judge said during the rendering of the verdict – “The apparent reason behind these cold-blooded, shameless murders was that the four completely innocent victims offended your twisted notion of honour, a notion of honour that is founded upon the domination and control of women, a sick notion of honour that has absolutely no place in any civilized society.”

    AMEN!!!!!!!!!!

*SIGH* We REALLY need start insisting that such baggage in this form gets left at the customs department when people want to come to Canada as an immigrant. If they can’t, if they balk, then we need them to go back. If they somehow get in and we find out that they still can’t understand and act like they don’t or shouldn’t have to, we need them to go back. If you want to continue to embrace your culture THAT strenuously, to the point where you can’t let go of incompatible and destructive values and beliefs like this, then you obviously don’t want to be here for the best reasons, and we need you to go. Lets shout this to the embassies, to the world – “if you want to come here, embrace OUR beliefs, don’t import your hatred; otherwise, you might as well just stay in the place you claim you want to leave. You will be regarded as invaders if you try”.

  3. Anne in swON says:

The problem is that one merely has to set foot on our soil and we’re stuck with years of failed attempts before deportation can ever take place. The education and weeding out process needs to occur before they ever get here. Many vulnerable women are deposited in large apartment complexes with others who are in the same situation. They have no idea about how to reach out for help. What can we do to help them? It must be done now.

    • Liz J says:

      Exactly Anne.

We need to make some real changes. We have freedoms and rights and some of those rights prevent us from checking in on and following up on those who are allowed to come into the country. They fall through the cracks until it’s too late to help them as was the case with the Shafia murders.

  4. Bec says:

So many Canadian parents for generations, have experienced the challenges of raising teenagers sowing their oats. This phenomenon wasn’t exactly invented yesterday and rather than abusing, threatening etc, most will call on their own young adulthood with a wink-wink, nudge-nudge and responsibly navigate their way through it and raise exemplary adults.

That isn’t to be in these backward societies that place women in subservient, obedient roles that are for the most part, impossible to achieve in freedom loving societies, such as ours, here in Canada.

Hopefully what this case has said to “honour killing” supporters is that they need to stay in their homelands and keep this barbaric abuse out of our Country. What it should say to bleeding heart left wing supporters is ‘we’ve had it with people coming to this country with bizarre practices and no intention of assimilating and embracing Canadian values.
I only wish that they were being sent back as they were apparently threatening Rona with on a regular basis. To know that they are going to be cared for on the tax payers dime when their children could not be is just wrong!

  5. Joanne says:

Jerry Agar is interviewing Christie Blatchford right now on CFRB 1010.

    • Joanne says:

      From Twitter:

      Jerry Agar @jerryagar1010
Blatchford re: Shafia: There was the usual social worker error by over-identifying with the parents rather than the victims.

and Blatchford couldn’t get through the trial without tears in her eyes. “I imagine those kids in that car… what were they thinking?”

  6. wilson says:

”..Virtually every time Shafia and Yahya encountered Canadian authorities, they bamboozled them…”

I don’t think in this situation you can blame the ‘system’.
They were a lying, cheating, manipulative bunch right from the start,
they bought their way into Quebec.
The first wife was brought in as a domestic, which is how she was treated (used).
Perhaps the ‘deprograming’ about females being lesser human beings, has to start in their churches here in Canada.
Canadian institutions should be less accomodating, starting with the burka.

    • Joanne says:

I don’t think in this situation you can blame the ‘system’.

Yeah but the system was an enabler.

Perhaps the ‘deprograming’ about females being lesser human beings, has to start in their churches here in Canada.

Very true. I think that is happening by some Imams in some mosques; or so they say.

      • Liz J says:

Joanne, agree the system was an enabler.

Our system with Charter dictates specified under Rights and Privileges is used and abused by people like the Shafias, they assume they can practice their tribal cultures here under our freedom of religion.

So what happens is we have this uncivilized horror in our country and who knows how many women are being abused and treated as chattels behind closed doors with bully men not allowing the females in their families a free life.

    • Michael Harkov says:

And that is exactly what I was thinking: why is refusing to be accomodating and being uncompromising ALWAYS a bad thing? It is entirely possible to be TOO accomodating and TOO compromising as much as it is to be not accomodating or compromising enough. Why can’t the left see that? >:-(

France is a classic case of this. They’re a case study of what happens when too much accomodating and too much compromising happens. UK was also on the the way there, but I think that they might have put the brakes on that just in time. We need to learn from both of their examples.

  7. Bubba Brown says:

“To be kind to the guilty is to be cruel to the victim” Adam Smith a Scot said that 250 years ago.
Seems to me that Justice in a way has been served although to me a single sentence of 25 years for 4 murders is not justice.
I rather like the American system which gives a sentence for each crime, no concurrent sentencing.
I realize that means the guilty would never walk among us again and I am O K with that, life in jail for first degree murder is our only protection from murderers like this.
As the death penalty in this Country was removed in my lifetime, by the Trudeau cabal of social engineers.
The lie they put forward at the time is that they, the murderers would never get out of jail.
But of course they snuck in the “faint hope” clause, and mandatory parole after 1/3 of a sentence served.
Couple that with two/fer for “time served” in a remand center, giving perpetrators and their Lawyers every reason to delay, delay, delay, jamming our Court System.
Trudeaus charter has done a great deal of harm IMO.
As for vetting immigrants, we must not welcome those who want to import their particular brand of misogyny.
The burqa is not welcome here, people that are more comfortable with it should perhaps stay where they are, seems to me that the ones that want to bring their backwards culture here are “settlers or colonizers” not immigrants.
They arrive here and start with “lawfare” to impose their customs on us.
Canadians value freedom if you don’t understand that stay where you are. JMO
When MP’s such as Justin of Trudeau whines that “barbaric” is too harsh to describe backwards tribal practices, the apple don’t fall far from the tree does it?
Anyway R.I.P. to four that just wanted what the rest of us enjoy, very sad.

It was the latest in a series of grisly examples of subjugation of women that have made headlines in Afghanistan in the past few months — including a 15-year-old tortured and forced into prostitution by in-laws and a female rape victim who was imprisoned for adultery.”

Lowell Green really letting loose this morning on the abuse of women. Boy, when he wants to get things moving, no one does it better. The show can be replayed on the cfra website.

IMO, the real problem is not the immigrants but rather our inept system. That’s what you get with the laissez-faire attitude. In our schools we have the old-fashioned tough love approach (discipline) and the other group, the bleeding heart lefties (oh, the poor little kid attitude.). Feeling sorry for people only makes matters worse. It does not help them.

The real problem is the lefty mentality in this country. These type of Canadians create the problems we have. Instead of building up our country, they tear it down. Their approach creates additional problems and make matters worse.

Canada must take the bull by the horns and stand up for Canada and Canadian values. Our Conservative government must come up with a model that states what it means to be a Canadian and what requirements are necessary for immigrants to our country. Other countries such as the Netherlands have already done so. At least, then, the immigrants will come to Canada with a full understanding of what it means to be a part of our country.

    • Richco says:

There was a very good article in the National Post this weekend that talked exactly about how badly socialist and liberal ideas are infused into schools in this country. It also speaks to how some taxpayer paid for alternative schools espouse unwanted values through character education, instead of doing what schools should be doing – educating in the basics.

All this in Ontario is happening WITH the McGuinty gov’t blessing…yet I see no media challenging him. Actually, I shouldn’t say that because Brian Lilley’s been on top of this for weeks.

      It’s here http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/01/27/alternative-classrooms-may-not-be-as-inclusive-as-they-claim-to-be/

It must be the Governments fault?
How are we going to get through to these people when they immigrate into Canada through Quebec which has control of it’s own immigration?
Maybe an interview before we let them into the ROC?
Bob Rae on a swing to our Left Coast blotivated about OAS.
He had the Government putting Seniors onto welfare.
I wonder how many would have been on welfare if bill c428 had of passed?
He forgot apparently that he was the seconder of former MP Ruby Dhalia’s motion to have immigrants wait as little as three years before drawing pension
    http://www.zoomers.ca/forum/topics/bill-c428-thanks-to-ruby
    Remember Bob? bill c428?
Nevermind Bob the Conservatives will do whatever it takes once again to clean up another Liberal mess.

“How are we going to get through to these people when they immigrate into Canada through Quebec which has control of it’s own immigration?”

Well, there you go. That’s a major part of the problem. It’s another example of how Canada creates problems for itself. How is it we’re one country and yet we have two immigration policies. It should not be. Our present government has one hell of a job attempting to clean up the mess left by previous governments.

  16. Sammy says:

    Turmel’s first Q.was pathetic…what I could understand of it.

  17. Joanne says:

Yeah the whole NDP crew was pretty lame today.

Sorry about the lag in getting your comment published. The filter is definitely having issues.

  18. Bec says:

Dave R had as his first guest this AM a tremendous guest who is travelling across Canada educating professionals (police, SW’s, teachers (hopefully)) on understanding how to communicate with these victims.
For example if the victim was asked if she was “raped”, that word means ‘prostitution for money’ to her and will answer “no”. I believe that this is what Rona Ambrose is suggesting with her ‘education’ proposal and is a huge aspect to understanding what these victims communicate. Now to get them to come forward is a whole other issue but perhaps with a few successes, this nation will see progress.

On a different vein……Charles Adler was amazing on this today and his personal story, heart wrenching!

  19. Sammy says:

Evan Solomon is just downright IGNORANT today in his treatment of Min.Van Loan..cutting him off, talking over him etc.Waiting to see how he treats the opposition..I’m sure it will be the same………..cough cough.

  20. I imagine the murderers will be protected from the rest of the prison population.I’m 72 yrs of age, and man oh man, isn’t this country going to hell in a hand basket.I seen that Rae and Turmel on the news this evening, and I can’t for the life of me understand how anyone would vote for either of them.It wasn’t long ago that the Liberals had some honorable MP’s,but not now.The NDPPQ and Liberals would do anything for power. They don’t care 1 iota about the poor or elderly. Why can’t the people that vote for them see what I and others see them as?

  21. Sammy says:

Did you catch the new tweet feed cbc had running thru P&P? Odd,there were hardly any shown on-screen…and very confusing, way too much clutter.Just more BS and propaganda by the Mothercorp. Also, that panel with Rebecca Blaikie is the most annoying thing I have ever seen on tv! She is horrible, and the other ‘bookend’ on panel Mark Holland just rounds up the stupidity. It sure made me glad he didn’t get re-elected..just go away Markie.
BTW,Blaikie was whining about her parents going to need OAS..HUH? Her Dad was a long-term MP,also in Prov gov’t in Man…so has pensions up his a**!Why didn’t Evan catch that big lie.

    • Bec says:

That is simply obscene to think the daughter of an MP and provincial MPP feels entitled to OAS. What a bunch of thumb twiddlers these people are to compare themselves to under-funded/at risk Seniors. I hope that the CPoC war room has that archived or that SNN is on that one.

The reality that these idiots are not telling us is that THEY have NONE of the details, period.

I certainly don’t remember and of these Dippers, Libs or CBC caring whether or not our Veterans were adequately pensioned…….not at least during the Chretien cuts to not only the pensions but their careers.
There is nothing at all to take seriously at that network and the only time I find out about their idiocy is hearing it here. Otherwise I’d have a very damaged TV.
All that can still stomach that are truly taking one for the team.

  22. Sammy says:

Bec,I just Wiki’d Bill Blaikie to get the whole truth.I knew he was one of the LONGEST serving MP’s..he ‘served’ from 1979-2008! Then did a 2 yr stint in Prov.politics…so..yeah,he’ll really be hurting! I seem to recall as well, that he was also doing some teaching gigs,so for that porker daughter of his to even bring up her parents ‘needing’ OAS is a blatant lie.

    • Bec says:

He was a huge icon, Sammy and this really is an insult! His daughter is delusional and her Dad should be so embarassed by this pity party! Wow!

      • Joanne says:

I’m glad I’m not the only one offended by Rebecca Blaikie. I’m so sick of her smirks. Every time I see her I change the channel.

        • Sammy says:

Jo,to me that smirk IS the epitome of Dipper stupidity.
Take a look at Natnewswatch re the cbc,and the multiple $100,ooo/yr employees. This is gonna hurt them big time..and it was mentioned today that Cheryl Gallant is goin’ after them bigtime! YIPPEE!

          • Joanne says:

O.K. That just made made put National Newswatch back up on my ‘Great News Sites’ list!

BTW this is a great twitter feed to follow – CBC Watch

          • Joanne says:

Sounds like they’re not giving out much info anyway:

Hundreds of Canadian Broadcasting Corporation employees are paid more than $100,000 a year but the Crown corporation won’t tell Parliament who they are and exactly how much they earn.

“CBC/Radio-Canada currently has approximately 730 employees who earn more than $100,000 per year,” according to documents tabled in Parliament by Heritage Minister James Moore Monday. “Their names and precise salaries are protected as per the Federal Privacy Act and Access to Information Act.

It particularly refused to disclose how much CBC Chief Correspondent Peter Mansbridge or popular host George Stroumboulopoulos take home each year. “The employment agreements between CBC/Radio–Canada and Chief Correspondent and Program Host Peter Mansbridge, CBC/Radio-Canada and Program Host George Stroumboulopoulos are both competitive and programming information.”

Didn’t see his show but just saw him on Byline as a contributor. Coren’s comments are always the best on these types of subjects… I just worry about his safety at times. But I guess to do so gives a victory to the extremists. He’s a brave guy. I applaud him.

I wish SNN allowed Coren to keep the format he had at CTS — a round table with 3 or 4 guests on set. Often times he done segments with prominent members of the Muslim community — most notable Terek Fatah — to engage in a heated debate on issues, such as the Shafia trial. I hope SNN makes this change in the near future. His old show was better.

  24. Sammy says:

Sen.Marg.LeBreton on Byline clarifying the whole pension fiasco. She is really PO’d with msm and opposition with the fearmongering and upset (Scott Brison) they are scaring our seniors…said ‘they (opposition) are running around with their hair on fire!’ She is saying totally irresponsible for msm etc to frighten seniors.C’mon Senator..just call them bald-faced liars and be done! I really like this lady.

    • Joanne says:

I think LeBreton is great too! I’ve met her a couple of times on the campaign trail. Lovely woman. Really down to earth.

    • Liz J says:

Sammy, that’s what Liberals have always done, attempt to put fear in seniors about their pensions, it’s an old trick that no longer works. The false information is rampant, they jumped on the wagon before the horse was hitched. This is an insult to the intelligence of today’s seniors who are very well abreast of what’s going on.

Liberals and NDP are both desperate for an issue to run with before they have their own houses in order to present and act like responsible opposition parties.

    • Joanne says:

Link here btw to segment with Sen. LeBreton.

      • Liz J says:

Marjory is one classy lady, I can’t think of a nicer, more competent person to represent us in the Senate, she works hard and knows her stuff, a true asset in the Upper House for Conservatives and the position of Senator in general. Great role model too.

    • Bec says:

Especially up in Northern Alberta. Some of the poll #’s I heard last week on Rutherford have me concerned that Edmonton needs to get engaged and quit licking the gravy bowl.
I too am excited that she was a hit in your riding. In my riding the PC’s just elected a school principal (note*** teacher) but at least it wasn’t the excessive spending guy (his campaign during the nomination period) riding the coat-tails of his federal election gig.
Because of this PC choice, I am very hopeful for our chances with our WRA gal too.
Redford’s history with Clark, Charest…etc has me very afraid!
