I note the line “quietly funding”. Which spells out the difference between this Majority government and others before.
In previous governments, they would have called a press conference – made the huge announcement – the media would have run lots of stories about how wonderful their promise was and then we would wait….and wait ….and wait.
The Harper Gov’t doesn’t need fancy press conferences that make promises that never get implemented – they just quietly do it.
How refreshing.
On another note – seems the media are having a very hard time accepting that THIS majority government is getting it done – imagine the audacity of them actually passing things they promised. And imagine the audacity of not funding opposition members to go on junkets around the globe as Susan Delacourt was complaing about on Twitter last night on behalf of poor Bob Rae.
“seems the media are having a very hard time accepting that THIS majority government is getting it done”
That’s what’s so ironic — having the media attacking them for actually moving to implement their campaign promises, such as the abolition of the long-gun registry, while championing Liberals, such as McGuinty and Cretin, both of whom have records littered with broken promises. It’s bizarro world.
Also the media neglects to point out that the alleged health care cuts don’t come into effect until 2016-17… AFTER the next election. So if the Media Party is so angry about the issue, let them and the opposition make it an election issue in 2015… Did Cretin and Martin hold off on their health care cuts until AFTER the 1997 election? (And those were REAL cuts, not the fictitious ones invented by the media) NO! Those cuts were rammed down our throats… and the Libs knew of the deficit when they got elected.
I marvel at the hypocrisy of the Media Party… always fun to compare and contrast how they attack the current gov’t with how they defended the previous Liberal ones. Hypocrites… all of ‘em!
Lawrence Martin is really having a tough time accepting the fact of a Conservative Government. Still doing lieberals and CINO (Mulroney) good Harper and Conservatives bad .
Harper’s getting the job done. I’m not at all surprised. For some comic relief this morning…because seriously folks that’s all it is, you can watch WK chase his tail and try to spin the Harper success into something ugly……all the while casting a halo over McGuinty. Kinsella’s trying to turn the discussion but it’s not going to work this time.
Not to mention that there’s absolutely nothing worth talking about re: the federal Liberals these days…..zip, zero, zilch….nothing even remotely interesting and hopeful for Canadians.
Quite liked the CTV interview with Harper last night….and despite La-la Lisa’s attempts at jabs the PM made her look rather, um…..dumb.
Wow Joanne, you sure didn’t get the down-time you had suggested judging by the demands of discussion:-) Maybe THIS weekend:-)
It’s refreshing to have a Prime Minister who obviously has a plan, a plan in promises he put forth before the election and now quietly and confidently gets the job done without first putting his finger to the wind.

Someone should send this story to Susan Riley, resident Liberal hack at the Ottawa Citizen. Her column last Fri continued her non-ending diatribe against all things conservative.
Riley is entitled to her own opinions, but not her own facts. She mentions twice in this short piece that the government “killed” the Canadian Wheat Board, rather than the truth that they ended its monopoly power. She also repeats the old chesnut about the 60 % citizens who did not vote conservative, implying that the government has no real mandate to implement any of their policies.
If anyone really is interested in what she writes, see http://www.ottawacitizen.com/opinion/columnists/year+happily+over/5900779/story.html

Hilarious! We can look forward to 4 more years of this, good Government and bad reporting.
”….The Conservative government agreed to set up a program through the newly-minted Mental Health Commission (2006),
pushed by then-health minister Tony Clement and Finance Minister Jim Flaherty. As is Harper’s style, it was to be finely-targeted, one-time funding…”
Targeted, results based funding….
While our wafer chasing msm was reporting on the next shiny object,
Conservative Ministers were experimenting on fixing what ails our existing social programs.
” … finely-targeted, one-time funding” sounds fiscally responsible to me.
Of course, the well-paid, actually over-paid, media types don’t get it that Canadians — that’s ordinary Canadians, not over-privileged, entitled, my-**it-don’t-smell types working in the lamestream media — have had it with the never-ending gravy train of our money being ridden by the friends of the l/Liberal$ for almost 30 years. There never seemed to be any interest by the media in the cost effectiveness of the never-ending, constantly flowing, grants and outright handouts to the friends and cronies of the Liberal$ — but now that the CPC hold the reins of power, there’s constant criticism, even when the government’s doing an exemplary job.
It’s a good thing most Canadians don’t either listen to or watch the mainstream media much anymore. Increasingly, the meanstream media types are preaching to the converted, the few that remain, and it’s actually rather fun to witness their consternation and incomprehension as they report on the progress of the majority CPC government and Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
These may be the five pilot projects funded by the feds, but other cities – Calgary, for one, I believe – have similar projects for housing the homeless and then giving them the help they need. Apparently it works, if not perfectly, then better than the previous ‘solution’ of solving the problems first and then finding these people housing.
“you can watch WK chase his tail and try to spin the Harper success into something ugly……all the while casting a halo over McGuinty”
Harper’s financial record is lauded worldwide. McGuinty has taken Ontario to have-not status, and the prospect of higher interest payments on the debt he has doubled in 7 years by his poor financial record via a lower debt rating.
I see we are all on the same wave length today. I just cross posted a critique of Lawrence Martin’s column. What gibberish. Come and stop by JNW or CotM and say what you really think. LOL
The Liberal media are in some kind of denial. Social justice can mean exactly what the Tories are doing — only it includes the victims and doesn’t blame gun owners for crimes they don’t commit.
Cultural war for what it means to be a Canadian? Indeed!
Sandy
Ontario Girl — Where have you been? I have asked about you often, not hearing from since right after May 2nd. Hope you or someone close were not sick.
Anyway, we missed you. Welcome back!
Thank you. I was so happy when we got a strong, National, Majority Conservative Govt. l was walking on air with a huge smile on my face for months. 4 years of no more fake scandals and no threat every few months of an election.
Still read all the posts, but just started commenting when Angus and Attawapiskat came into the news. Enough to make ones hair stand on end with all the soap box reporting from the lefties.
“Quite liked the CTV interview with Harper last night….and despite La-la Lisa’s attempts at jabs the PM made her look rather, um…..dumb. ”
The PM was at his very best! He certainly did imo show enormous respect for some of the dumbest questions that I have ever heard.
I respect an insightful, challenging journalist but I do not respect a journalist who, during an interview, frames a question that instills an obvious personal opinion. She did. It appeared catty and juvenile.
AS well, Mrs Harper, is the smartest, most down to earth Wife/Mother of a PM in my lifetime. What a breath of fresh, Canadian air she is and we are so lucky to have her by this great leader of our country’s side.
The bleating from Liberal writers Riley, Martin, Taber, about PMSH changing the very essence of Canada, is absurd if you compare his actions to those of earlier Liberal governments. Just one example: In Jul 1982 12 MPs present rammed through the House a Liberal private members’s bill renaming Dominion Day to Canada day. Without even a qu0rum present the Deputy Speaker Lloyd Francis allowed the bill to pass, all with about 5 minutes of debate.
That the present commentators can somehow equate changes to Canadian Wheat Board marketing, with changes to our national holiday says a lot about their priorities
Yikes! I just watched Lisa Laflamme’s barbeque of Prime Minister Harper: ‘talk about grace under pressure. He did remarkably well when lobbed that volley of curve balls. Laflamme’s a piece of work and, I suggest, a lousy interviewer. She did a very poor job of hiding her, um, reservations about Prime Minister Harper.
I never remember any end-of-year interview with Chretien or Martin that broke for editorial comment and accompanying video criticizing the sitting government. Did I miss something? Did this ever happen? Two cases in point: the segments on Peter McKay and Jack Layton: What did PM Harper learn from the outpouring of love for Layton, insinuating that PM Harper should be more laid back … Then, Laflamme’s bringing in the Obamas and their “date nights,” insinuating “why can’t you two be more like Barry and Shelly?” Absolutely tasteless.
Both Laureen and Prime Minister Harper were gracious and natural, making Laflamme look all the more unprofessional and bitchy.
“Both Laureen and Prime Minister Harper were gracious and natural, making Laflamme look all the more unprofessional and bitchy.’
Yes, I thought that Laflamme thought she was going to get the ‘gotcha’ moment when she cruised tastelessly into their personal time together but lo and behold, OUR very wise PM and truly adorable, so very classy, Laureen made her look like a high school ‘mean girl’.
They couldn’t have hit a greater ‘back atcha’ and Laflamme seriously bombed throwing in any reference to the Obama’s and their ‘date-nights’. PUHLEEZE!
In this time of economic turmoil what would be the signal of the conscientious warrior to his countrymen? Certainly not a concern if they indulge in a ‘date-night’ when folks are pinching their pennies and can’t do the same.
She is just so out of touch with the fibre of this country it’s not even funny.
That interview must have been rerun last night. It first aired Boxing Day.
It’s funny but my personal reaction was that Lisa did a fairly good job, but maybe I was just comparing it to her hack reporting in the past – especially circa Brenda Martin.
Oh well. Yes the PM and Laureen always seem to stay classy in spite of the interviewer.
IMO LaFlamme did bring out one fact in her interview/interrogation with the Prime Minister and Laureen, she’s not ready for the big league.
Bringing up the trumped up media/opposition gotcha on McKay gave PM Harper the opportunity to give the facts on the matter.
The leftist media hacks and their buddies in opposition in the HOC are an embarrassment. Our Ministers traveling the globe to attend important meeting with world leaders are not representing a Mickey Mouse operation, we are a well managed nation in spite of global economic strife and the envy of industrialized nations. They need to stay where other leaders stay for security as well as convenience.
I think CTV would have done better for themselves had they chosen Tom Clark to replace Robertson. I don’t know their ratings with LaFlamme but I certainly never watch her.
I agree Liz. La-la LaFlamme is just a poor interviewer who tripped over her attempts at “gotcha” moments that actually backfired and got HER pretty good. I just get the impression that she’s just not very smart in that way.
Re her talking about date nights, what would the media do if our PM and wife did take date nights by flying to NYC to attend some theater, or maybe if they took several 4 million dollar vacations several times a year. Or maybe pulled a Pelosi and booked a 10,000/night hotel. Missed the interview and re-runs as had family committments and tv was shut off.
And to think all those media hacks have at least 4 more years to try to GET our PM. I think Canadians will be so tired of their garbage, and the garbage the opposition is throwing out that those 60% that didn’t vote PMSH will change their vote.
How many Canadians did not vote liberal when they got their majorities, or needed the NDP to keep them in power with their blackmail. Same for the Bloc.
The thing about LaFlamme was her hmmm, I’ve-actually-got-a-”deeper”-meaning-to-this-question — something-my-progressive-colleagues-asked-me-to-ask-the-PM-hoping-to-embarrass-him. There’s a look that comes over her face when asking these questions in which you can almost hear/see the gotcha she’s springing on the PM.
I agree, Liz, that Tom Clark would have been a much better choice to replace Lloyd Robertson. I’m afraid that LL got the job because she’s a woman and I’m afraid that she hasn’t done “equality” a big favour. Now, Barbara Frum … she was a different kind of news anchor, solid, informed, with gravitas. I still miss her.
“Now, Barbara Frum … she was a different kind of news anchor, solid, informed, with gravitas. I still miss her.”
Me too…..and Pamela Wallin!
As for the ‘look’ that you reference batb, you have hit the nail on the head.
It was the ‘look’ that she was unable to camouflage that clearly exposed to me, her personally felt sentiments.
A talented journalist is able to control that during a significant interview opportunity such as this one…..An interview with the most influential person in the land should garner a professional, poised, non partisan and CTV DID NOT get the job done with this person whatsoever.
“The out pouring of love for Jack Layton”? Seriously? Jack was a popular man who happened to be a politician.
The Media Party tried so very hard to portray Canadians as “reeling” in “mourning”.
I personally have only heard one (1) person speak of Mr Layton during the whole dog and pony show and it’s aftermath.
As for the holding up of POTUS and his wife being held up as some sort of example to be slavishly followed ? A WTF moment indeed “date night” ?
Sounds like something a ditzy 13 year old would come up with for a junior high school paper.
I keep hearing the “60% didn’t vote for Conservatives lie” If anyone chooses to say that in my presence.
I give them the benefit of the Real numbers.
The problem is they assume that those that did not choose to vote would not have voted for PM Harper.
But using their fraudulent methodology.
81% did not vote Liberal.
70% did not vote NDPQ.
I saw a cartoon of the third place finisher Bob Rae who only got 19% of the vote, 81% did not vote Liberal.
Anyway Bob, looking very vacuous, is standing on a street holding a sign it says “Will defeat Conservatives for food”
I hear their fundraising activities have flat lined, pity? not.
Strange CTV thought video of other people was necessary to fill in time, when our lame stream media has bitched non-stop about PMSH not answering media questions….. Ms Lisa could have got in another question or two in the time it took to run those clips and commentary.
Her questions were not as combative as Fife & Robertson’s used to be.
Or maybe it was that PMSH answered the questions without a hint of feeling under attack.
Our Prime Minister is very comfortable in his job, and it showed.
IMO it was out of line to run those clips during what was billed as an interview with the PM and Mrs Harper. Does anyone recall this ever being done before?
Wonder if they might have shown a clip of Chretien with a choke hold on an activist when doing a year end interview with him?
Agree, Bec, he is so “very comfortable in his job”, unflappable no matter what they toss at him, he’s much the better of them every time.
Both the PM and Laureen appear to be well tuned in to what they’re dealing with in the media yet they never let it show, a class act all around.
“Strange CTV thought video of other people was necessary to fill in time …”
I don’t think they were trying to fill in time, wilson; rather, they were trying to tarnish the glow around our Prime Minister, who has outperformed every other world leader in these very difficult and “challenging,” as the PM puts it, time. Most of the British and European media are praising Prime Minister Harper and his government, while our own media hacks bitch and complain, basically, that their beloved Liberal$ are no longer in power.
What I love about all of this, is that Prime Minister Harper obviously loves his job and grows increasingly comfortable wearing the mantel of “Prime Minister,” while Laureen has found her niche and is really enjoying life at 24 Sussex and Harrington Lake (though she admits she’ll always be “an Alberta girl”). It gives me great pleasure to know that a family with children is living at 24 Sussex, having neighbours, fellow-students of Ben’s and Rachel’s, and musicians in to jam with, watch hockey games with, and to take care of the adopted cats, etc. Our PM and his family don’t jet-set and spend their time in Palm Springs with celebs, etc. They’re happy to spend time at 24 Sussex and Harrington Lake and to make their home/s accessible to other Canadians — not just to political and media cronies and cheerleaders, which seemed to be the modus operandi of the Liberal$ when they were in power.
The Canadian media just can’t stand the fact that the Prime Ministership of Canada and the Harpers are such a comfortable fit. And, they especially can’t stand the fact that under the Harper/CPC government, Canada’s one of the biggest international success stories of 2011. I would have liked this interview much better if Laflamme had dwelt on PM Harper’s successes rather than playing the harridan with a smile as she tried to highlight negatives, mostly in her own mind.
”..they were trying to tarnish the glow around our Prime Minister…”
well their attempt was a major fail,
and very silly of CTV to approve those clips.
Waste of precious little time they spend with the Prime Minister.
The Dippers may be about to find out just what legacy Jack left them with as a party. The adulation may subside when they start dealing with a few realities, not the least of which is choosing a new leader.
The Quebec voters used the NDP in hopes of getting seats with power, that’s it, that’s all. It’s a one off IMO.
When the historians write up Jack’s legacy, it will be pretty short.
( city leg to leader of the 3rd party, he squeezed Martin but got nothing because PMSH won the next election)
-He led a 50 year old party into Official Opposition;
Jack was the first choice of Quebecers May 2, 2011, who tired of their 20 year old separatist party.
It pretty much stops there (except for the ‘what could have been’ fantasy)
this is the only way the federal Liberals can stay relevant…..get their Lib-Loving Lemming media to try to breathe new life into a comatose party. Nice try CTV but Canadians aren’t buying it. Oh, if you watch our Juniors tonight I hear that PM will take in the game in Edmonton.
PM was at the game last night and the previous game before that.
Just in case the media decides to say that the taxpayers paid for the tickets,
they were gifts from his nephew whom the PM took him and son Ben to last night night game.
A late Merry Christmas to Joanne and everyone at BLY!! Great comments as usual here on BLY. We watched the Stephen Harper interview with that interviewer who does not deserve to be named. One word for her: disgusting. That smug look on her face is a real turn off. I loved the way the PM told her clearly, and with emphasis, that he fully intended to carry out the promises he made to the Canadian people. He was clear and direct answering the questions and innunendos coming from that loser. – demonstrating easily the awareness and knowledge of the topics he touched on which should give every Canadian full confidence in his leadership. None of that vagueness and “don’t worry, be happy” nonsense coming out of the mouth of Chretien, for example. You can tell he knows what he’s doing, where he’s going, and his confidence as PM of Canada. He surely is Canada’s gift!! As for Laureen, she’s a delight. If I ever get the chance, I’ll ask her for a ride on her motorcycle. As for the media, since the election results, they have not changed their tone one iota. Putting down our Conservative government is their only goal day in and day out. They are Canada’s national disgrace. We should have a campaign publicizing that fact worldwide. As for Ontario Girl, what’s with that story?????
The low moment of The Interview for me was when She asked the PM oh-so innocently after commenting on how it great it was that there was a celebration for those who took part in the Libya mission, “Why no celebration for the troops who came home from Afghanistan recently ?”
Great smack-down from the equally innocent-looking PM : “But Lisa, you know of course that our mission in Afghanistan is not over yet.”
I think what stood out for me was that there were no questions of any substance on things like economics, Afghanistan, or even pure policy matters. The Robertsonn/Fife combo had generally done their homework and could get into issues in depth. This woman is nothing but a piece of fluff, masquesrading as a serious journalist. Quite honestly, I think even Taber could have done a better job.

EI financing ruled illegal by top court

OTTAWA–The federal government broke the law in financing the employment insurance system, transforming the premiums paid by workers and employers into a back-door, unconstitutional tax, says the Supreme Court of Canada.
So, who’s going to jail? Which Liberal$ are going to the Big House?
Heads should roll. The Liberal$ robbed Peter to pay Paul — and the Canadian taxpayer is both Peter and Paul. What a scam. Why do I somehow get the feeling that no one’s going to have to take the rap for this?
Is the media going ballistic? They would if it was the CPC that had done this. Double standards abound.
I note the line “quietly funding”. Which spells out the difference between this Majority government and others before.

Nuff said…
debt rating.= credit rating
I see we are all on the same wave length today. I just cross posted a critique of Lawrence Martin’s column. What gibberish. Come and stop by JNW or CotM and say what you really think. LOL
http://crux-of-the-matter.com/2011/12/27/lawrence-martin-still-pushing-harper-govts-hidden-agenda/
The Liberal media are in some kind of denial. Social justice can mean exactly what the Tories are doing — only it includes the victims and doesn’t blame gun owners for crimes they don’t commit.
Cultural war for what it means to be a Canadian? Indeed!
Geez, that’s ubneleivbale. Kudos and such.
I know where you’ve been OG:-)
Hmmm.
Yeah, double “Hmmm”!!
Yes it was great to see Laureen there. She is an amazing woman,
Interesting story, Joanne. But I have some trepidations.
That the present commentators can somehow equate changes to Canadian Wheat Board marketing, with changes to our national holiday says a lot about their priorities
.
Lisa Laphlegm makes me pine for Lloyd Robertson and Sandy Whinealdo.
Yeah Lloyd always did a classy interview.
Joanne: “It’s funny but my personal reaction was that Lisa did a fairly good job …”
You’re too nice, Joanne! You don’t have a bitch-o-metre!
lol! I may have to give that interview another look. Perhaps I was in too mellow of a mood at the time.
LOL! ‘Mellow mood: OK! That gets you off the hook, then …
Ah yes, That lovely time after Christmas when you can relax with a class of fine Merlot and start to breathe again…
Joanne and Mary T., I didn’t watch a rerun of the interview; I went to the CTV Web site and caught it there. It’s in four parts.
http://www.ctv.ca/politics/ (Scroll down; it’s on the right under “Featured: Interview with the PM”
Our media assumes that Jack would have led his party into government.
That’s a big assumption, and one I don’t agree with for many reasons.
It’s time the media moved on from ‘what could have been’ , and Jack’s story .
-He led a 50 year old party into Official Opposition;
Jack was the first choice of Quebecers May 2, 2011, who tired of their 20 year old separatist party.
It pretty much stops there (except for the ‘what could have been’ fantasy)
The Dipper story is really about Quebec imo.
“The Dipper story is really about Quebec….”.
Yes, agree totally Wilson.
this is the only way the federal Liberals can stay relevant…..get their Lib-Loving Lemming media to try to breathe new life into a comatose party. Nice try CTV but Canadians aren’t buying it. Oh, if you watch our Juniors tonight I hear that PM will take in the game in Edmonton.
http://edmonton.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20111221/federal-liberal-party-year-in-review-111228/20111228/?hub=EdmontonHome
What struck me in the interview is PM’s frustration with the American WH re to our oilsands keystone Pipeline. I sense a bit of anger.
Yeah! I picked up on that too. A sense of frustration for sure.

“EI financing ruled illegal by top court.”
