I’m still having trouble understanding why the Liberal party is railing against tax-cuts that they’ve already enabled and are in the works.
You’d think they’d want to take some of the credit instead.
David Akin explains:
In any event, the federal Liberals are tilting at windmills here because there won’t be any corporate tax cuts in the budget. The current round of corporate tax cuts — a cut took effect on Jan. 1 and another one is scheduled for 2012 — were voted on and approved by the House of Commons in 2007. Neither Ignatieff nor 100 other Liberals bothered to show up for that vote.
Flaherty can do nothing in this year’s budget and those previously approved tax cuts are coming down the pike.
So where’s the fight?
Ignatieff and the Liberals then should be upfront with Canadians: Should they form the government, they will have to raise corporate taxes.
David Akin is right that this has nothing to do with the upcoming budget. The tax cuts are a done deal for now.
If there is an election this spring, it may be difficult to explain to voters why lower tax rates are important for job growth. However Canadians will have no problem understanding the hypocrisy of the Liberal Party – a fact that both the Conservatives and the NDP will be only too happy to point out.

Call it like it is: The Liberal Plan is a Tax Increase – Alberta Ardvark

Considering how many days iggy has missed showing up for work, someone forgot to tell him that these cuts were passed in 2007. Is he that far behind in all his decisions.
From comments around the blogs, Giles might wish he had not made such an outrageous demand. We should thank him for telling us what a coalition with the Bloc would cost the taxpayers. No wonder iggy wants to raise taxes.
You know what, LET Ignatieff support the Bloc’s demand for billions for a Quebec arena, this could play BEAUTIFULLY into the PM and the Tories’ hands.
The PM could say that the money Ignatieff claims to want to “save” by not having corporate tax cuts would just end up getting ****ed away to pay for his separatist coalition partner’s demand that he will cave to. Then ask Ignatieff why he is in the habit of giving in to separatist blackmail while the rest of Canada sees the PM standing up to the separatists and saying “no”. He might lose some Quebec seats, but I will bet dollar to donates that he will more than make up for that in the ROC for his bold stand.
And when Ignatieff and the Liberals inevitably say that the PM and the Tories don’t care about Quebec, say that the F-35 contract is going to provide jobs galore for the aerospace industy and ask why Ignatieff is against that.
Liberal policies are just anti-Conservative
And another thing – it is high time that we as a nation ask the PM to tell Quebecers that not one more dime will be given to sate the satisfacation of separatists that want to destroy the unity of our country with our own tax dollars; that if they want things for Quebec, the only way to get that from now on is to be part of the federal process, because the gravy train is going to stop.
It is high time we cull the true separatist supporters from the ones that only vote Bloc to get things for Quebec. You want things for Quebec, get rid of the separatists. Once we get a majority without Quebec, their voters will see that it is more advantageous to play the federal ball. They will come around soon enough. Enough is enough.
Over my whole adult life Quebec has been demanding independence versus payouts.
Enough! I believe a lot of Canadians feel as I do and will support Stephen Harper to stop the Bloc-mail. A good beginning is to end the 2 dollar political subsidy.
The Liberals are such a disaster, aren’t they?
One has to assume because they decided not to show up for the vote in 2007, they consider themselves off the hook for it passing, thus not supporting. To get to the answer of why they hold the current position, you have to try a smidgen to think like a Liberal, as challenging as that is. I believe that they are in such disarray and have always gotten away with stuff, they believe their own rhetoric and flip-flops.
They need $$ for social programs and because they are Liberal, that involves taxes, not cuts, unless those cuts are on the backs of the provinces and folks that didn’t vote for them.
And as to the Bloc-mail…..Say an absolute, NO,NO,NO, PMSH!
Grim Reminder of the Three Stooges making Bloc Linchpin of that coalition
Every single Liberal (including Ignatieff) signed the letter to the Governor General to be part of a coalition with the Bloc and didn’t care about the danger to Canada, but were only interested in grabbing power – no wonder the Governor General told them to get lost. How scary was that – now Canadians know.
Liberals knew they made themselves vulnerable to this type of blackmail.
Should Canadians trust Ignatieff and the Liberals in the next election?
Let us also remember that Quebec has returned 49 Bloc out of 75 MP’s to Ottawa which represents a huge majority of Quebeckers who support them. This isn’t some small rump group of Quebeckers.
Love that word, Bloc-mail. Bet it takes off like iggy and iffy.
Story at NNW about the govt spending on monitoring what the media is saying, and less on polling. Seems Graves is one company that has been hit by lack of contracts.
(Is EKOS a corporation.)
I hope the govt is paying attention to what we are saying on the blogs re the bloc-mail, corporate tax cuts and other matters.
Could the PM know that most media is liberal, and twist stories and facts, to support them. Does he know that the majority of us pay no attention to the media for the truth. Does he know that most of us do not tell the truth when polled. Is that why the PM is always ahead of what voters want. Take his reply to the question on capital punishment, seems most canadians agree with his answer.
Maybe if Graves had not been offering advice to liberals he might be used by the PM. Must google Ekos to see if it is a corporation, bet it is.
Some positions are so hypocritical, asinine, they could only be held as a “matter of faith” by the Tax your a** Liberals.
I guess they figure they should get a pass when, what 100 of them didn’t bother to show up to vote on the change in the corporate tax structure
So now we know what Gilles and his band of language challenged “pretend separatists” are demanding of the coalition for their signature on the attempted coup document.
This is what the Awful Waffle and the Liberals were willing to put in the big manila envelope, what they said “Yes, Yes, Yes…Way” to, just another day in Canada, just some more “Bloc-Mail” folks.
If we go into an election.
I would sure like to see a real debate one on one starting with the party with the least seats, the winner to debate the PM one on one
No screechin’, preachin’, interupptin’ Green wannabes with no credibility, seats or class allowed.
I want to hear exactly what the other parties position is, what policies they are proposing. What exactly they would do differently.
We as a Country are getting played, we look like a third world version of a cage match, when their are no rules, people are not able to speak, or be heard because they are talked over and screeched at by people who should not even be there.
Our Democracy demands no less, enough of the MSM games and manipulation.
It was no accident that Elizabeth May ended up next to our PM both “debates”
clueless, classless, no credibility or rational policies.
very good post here http://stevejanke.com/
Richco, yeah that’s a great post by Steve Janke. I love this line:
Each party is playing chicken with the budget making public demands the Government can’t possibly meet without delaying the balancing of the budget. It appears each party does not want to get labeled with supporting the extension of this minority government unless they can secure some significant concessions for bragging rights in 2012.
Many ex-Liberals have spoken up against the tack to the left by Ignatieff. I am impressed with the groups from Commerce, Manufacturing, Aviation that don’t support the Liberal talking points and have made public statements to that effect.
The key is for the Conservatives to get those folks to donate, tell their family, friends and have them vote on election day.

Here’s another good article to think about. Coming from a surprising source
http://www2.macleans.ca/2011/01/26/it-must-be-true-some-unnamed-guy-said-so/
These corporate tax cuts were a key part of Flaherty’s
Advantage Canada plan, introduced in Oct 2007. How pathetic that so much of our mediocre media have completely forgotten that project, and it’s many other components (such as having a national Securities regulator).
Anyway, pretty well the only ONLY spokesperson for the lefties is Jim Stanford, “economist” for the Canadian Auto Workers. He is obviously tied to the Dippers. So where are the LIBERAL third-party advocates for the corporate tax hike ?
If you want to see the muddled thinking of the lefties, watch Stanford being interviewed yesterday here on BNN. (runs 7 minutes)
sample:
Stanford: ” … in 2000 in Canada, there were 100,000 auto parts workers
employed in Canada, and the corporate tax rate was 29 %. Last year, there were 60,000 employed auto parts workers, and the tax rate was 16 and a half percent. So the correlation there is reverse–the MORE you cut taxes, the smaller the industry gets …”
Interviewer: “…. you can’t make that, that’s a bit of a false dichotemy…
And as I mentioned elsewhere, the Libs are running their annoying ads a lot on BNN. Which is really dumb, because most of the viewers of BNN would be in FAVOR of the tax cuts. One (of many) reasons is that the companies they invest in, would then be better able to pay out higher dividends.
CJ – I know!! That’s hilarious, isn’t it?
Re: Stanford – He’s lost a lot of credibility on the tax cut file. His arguments don’t make much sense.

“Here’s another good article to think about. Coming from a surprising source”
To me, that article smacked of Liberal bias….talking about Iggy’s international speech that was “lost” – how about any of the numerous international speeches Stephen Harper has given that were “lost” –
It still seems to be all about the “Liberals”, just as I find most of the press gallery focus – suggestions for the Liberals, ideas for the Liberals, how to get the Liberals re elected, what the Liberals should be doing, how what they are doing isn’t working, Liberal, Liberal, Liberal – all Liberal, all the time.
come on MSM….there is more going on in politics that the Liberals getting re elected; maybe if you reported on it, you would have more credibility with the Canadians public.
One point that is being overlooked in this whole corporate tax cuts affair is the fact that the Tory government reached an agreement with the provinces back in 2007 to bring down the tax rate together, i.e. all the provinces agreed to work with the federal government on this particular policy. When was the last time there was such unanimity in our confederation ? Particularly impressive when you consider how many of those provincial governments were not conservative. And when you consider how many of those provincial governments have changed parties over time, but all have still supported this policy.
I think it’s time for the provinces to stand up on this issue. I know Dwight Duncan has made some comments, but I think it’s time we heard from some of the other provincial finance ministers too.
The Bloc are master baiters, they put out something that’s sure to get negative reaction from the ROC then use the reactions to tell Quebecers English Canada hates them.
CJ – You missed the jist of the whole MacLean’s article. You’re seeing bias where none exists. If you’re counting on the MSM to do anything but take the easy road to churn out columns that mean nothing to anyone then you’ll always see bias.
What I got from the piece was that the Liberal media and their stories are baseless so can’t be considered anything close to accurate. It’s a good article and is a great lesson for any and all who believe the MSM or PPG over the words from the horse’s mouth.
Some days I see more “Liberal, Liberal, Liberal” coming from here – you’ve got to admit that as much as we try it’s Ignatieff that’s still getting the lion’s share of ink here.
The PM needs no help from the media. I’m pretty confident that he knew everything there was to know about how he’d be received before he set foot in the PMO.
I do NOT want a Stephen Harper crafted in the image the MSM develop for him and the country. That’s a page from the LPOC manual because they’ve still got nothing, not even a leader that Canadians need or want.
By the way I saw the CPC ad run last night on CTV. I say let the Liberals keep their ad running because it’s not having an effect at all.

Get a load of this; contrast these two stories about Ignatieff and the idea of that arena for Quebec -
======================
http://www.torontosun.com/news/canada/2011/01/26/17046511.html -
OTTAWA – “Vague promises from millionaires” shouldn’t get the feds to pony up cash for an NHL-calibre arena.” “No public subsidies for the National Hockey League, no public subsidies for millionaires”.
http://www.nationalpost.com/news/canada/Ignatieff+suggests+with+funding+Quebec+rink/4173639/story.html -
“If that’s the proposition, and it’s really put together well, and we’ve got private participation and public participation from the other two levels of government, a federal government is going to be involved”.
=========================
Ignatieff doesn’t even know where he stands on the same issue from day to day, even on the SAME day, LOL!
I’m still trying to digest that – basically, “no arenas for millionaires”……….”the federal government should be involved”.
On the same bloody day, LOL. Ignatieff continues to push the meaning of the term “waffle” every day. This clown would be an utter DISASTER as our PM.
Jad nails it.
The federal and provincial governments worked together to give Canada a competitive edge. Each level of government legislated their agreement to tax reduction.
The plan was not just with corp tax cuts to attract businesses and investors, but also to attract the brightest minds.
The brain drain has been reversed, investment is flowing in, not out.
And now the Iffy Liberals are causing businessess to hold back investments to see if the coalition of losers wins the next election,
which would mean a 2% corp tax hike, and possibly a carbon tax.
Both of which would kill the Canadian competitive edge in the global econmy.
What really really gets me, is the Iffy plan is the reoffering of some of those broken promises from 1993….thru to 2008
Liberals had 3 majorities, and 6 back to back surplus’ and didn’t get it done.
But Iffy would push our deficit higher to do it now.
Ok for him, he’ll take his Canadian pension and run back to Haaavard, but we taxpayers get stuck with the bill forever.
Iggy continues to astound but not in a good way. He’s looking more and more like a “clown” every time he opens his yap to do some lip lickin’ hollerin’. He’s fitting in with the people of Canada about as well as he’d ride bronco. He just ain’t got what it takes.
The fact he voices different views on the same issues could be because he has been passed notes from different handlers and can’t remember what he said previously, sort of an absent minded professor syndrome.
Look for Chretien and the lefties head off to Tunisa to bash the PM for not allowing the ex-president exile in Canada. Just as they bash our country on the UAE on foreign soil.
The clock is ticking.
Just to be contrary, we should ask, why has Duceppe come out with that bloc-mail now. Could it be that was his price for support of the coup, and something has happened to his love affair with the libs/ndp. Has he gone public to let us know what was planned, or is being planned for his support. 500 million for Que, Layton wants 700 million for something. They both know that will not happen and are they putting iggy in a corner, planning to form a coalition opposition and sending the liberals in never land.
Remember, JC supported Duceppe as opposition leader rather than Reform and continued to refer to Preston as leader of the turd party. I am sure the PM knows he can’t diss AB by paying the Que/ndp ransom. He knows what we did to Brian.
There is no guarantee that we would gain seats if we pay the ransom, is Duceppe ready to campaign for the PM, I doubt it. So what does his threat mean that Que voters will send a message if we don’t give in.
A better threat would be, vote conservative and be Canadians or you lose everything.
Does Duceppe see the writing on the wall for Charest and is getting ready to jump to Prov politics and have his referendum. Is that the reason for his making noise so he can say, see Canada doesn’t love us, let’s leave.
I think there are hundreds of Canadians that would love those civil servant jobs they could fill using english only.
“The fact he voices different views on the same issues could be because he has been passed notes from different handlers and can’t remember what he said previously, sort of an absent minded professor syndrome.”
Right Liz J and further the Awful Waffle has a well documented history of similar remarks depending on who his audience is and the time of day apparently.
The ramping up of election circus has been drummed up by people and media with no stories to tell so they grasp at straws.
I really don’t believe with the respect the PM has between his gov’t and the majority of our provinces that he’s throw all he and his provincial counterparts have worked for out the window. That is may be what the media and LPOC wish for but it’s just not going to happen….again. Just like an election hasn’t happened in each previous year that the so-called “experts” or media pundits predicted.
The media is not a credible source on that issue – yet the spin continues and some are buying it. I’m not.
Pay attention Iffy, PMSH/Flaherty are 2 years ahead of you in the ‘education thing’ you want to happen.

“Set my people free” Why one of the best Countries in the whole world is being held hostage “Bloc-mailed” by a bunch of “Pirates” or “Pantelon-Corsiaire” wearing wanna be’s that raise 86% of their funding from people they destain from even having the courtesy to speak with.
These latter day Somalians need to be sunk, you never, ever pay ransom or Bloc-Mail. Their ship of state runs on our taxes, let them build their own stuff.
Voters will be watching this issue very carefully.
Time to draw a line in the sand in Canada.
These traitorous twerps love to run overseas on our dime to disrespect us Canadians, and the very industries, taxpayers that they have been fleecing for way too long.
I see a huge opportunity here for the party with the courage to seize the day.
Did everyone notice the big demands from Duceppe to support the budget?…. and then to have the Coalition say – they were just happy to support us for being there… no strings attached – RIGHT! Can you ever imagine what was in that agreement to have them sign to give the liberals and NDP their big time in Government? You can see what they wanted at any cost!!!. I hope that is brought to the attention of our voters – just what the Bloc needs and has demanded to be part of the Coalition the NDP and Liberals can’t wait to try and form!!!

“Dustbins I Have Known”
“A friend in Egypt sent the following assessment of the situation there yesterday:
1. Most commentators tend to make it [the unrest in Egypt] a ‘western oriented strongman’ v. Islamist thing, whereas the Islamists are already very well placed within this regime, including the military and the security services.
2. Recent Pew poll shows one-in-five Egyptians support Al Quaeda. Egyptians I spoke to thought this as understatement.
3. The MB [Muslim Brotherhood] seems certain to emerge on top at some point, only question is when. That will give them state-resources for their sophisticated agitprop and penetration efforts in the West.
There is a possibility that if Mubarak falls, it will have an effect analogous to the collapse of the Shah during Jimmy Carter’s Presidency. The same friend with Egyptian connections noted that very extreme poverty depicted in the “Happyland” post could be found in Egypt. He sent a link to pictures, showing garbage scavengers in Egypt, called the zabaleen, who consist almost exclusively of Coptic Christians. They have traditionally used pigs to recycle trash. But these porcine aides have been outlawed by the Mubarak government.
This governmental decision poses a major setback to the Zabbaleen because pigs are an essential component to their recycling and sorting system, in which the pigs eat all of the organic waste. Immediately after the culling of pigs, observers have noticed a visible increase of trash piles and piles of rotting food on the streets of Cairo.
That Egyptian government’s decision to clamp down on scavengers should lead to rotting piles of garbage should be no surprise. I remember Marcos era efforts to ban garbage scavengers for cosmetic reasons resulting in the same thing. One thing the scavengers knew that the leaders in their palaces didn’t was that garbage could not be wished away. But you could, with some effort, make something out of it.
The idea was alien to the dictators. The rot, you see, was not in the heaps but elsewhere; less in the scavangers than in the heart of the dictatorial system. Failing systems are sumps of bad ideas, which have for a long time been subsisting on rent-taking and cronyism. Regimes which are about to fall can never get rid of all the toxic ideas circulating in its memory space, like a bad operating system that is full of memory leaks and dysfunctional background processes. At some point you either reboot or face the Blue Screen of Death.
Until then such regimes are happy to occupy themselves with irrelevant trivia. The Egyptians were determined to get rid of the Nilotic version of Happyland’s Smokey Mountain. Why? Probably because they were easier to get rid of than the Muslim Brotherhood. “There are also worries that the Egyptian government is seeking to remove the Moqattam Village, also known as “Garbage City” entirely and relocate the Zabbalean further outside of Cairo 25 km away to a 50-feddan plot (1 feddan = 1.038 acres), in Cairo’s eastern desert settlement of Katameya.” That would not only pointlessly oppress the Copts, once the inhabitants of Egypt before the Islamic conquest and now reduced to scraping the streets clean of trash, but probably produce even higher piles of trash in Cairo. But that’s how it goes. Given the enormous security challenges facing the country, a Google search on “gays in the military” yields 2.5 times more hits than “Mubarak Egypt”.
As Marie Antoinette was reputed to have said “if people can’t eat bread, let them eat cake”.
And speaking of trash heaps, with the unrest now spreading to Algeria and Jordan, Jennifer Rubin at the Washington Post concludes that maybe the Obama administration’s policies may have put them on course to joining dictators in “the ash heap of history”. She writes:
What will the Obama team learn from this? Perhaps it will understand, if not acknowledge, that its coziness with dictators has been unwise. And maybe more sober heads will admit that Obama’s obsession with the Middle East peace process was equally misguided. If the administration can attend to the Middle East “democracy deficit,” as Abrams calls it, we might be able to turn failure into success. The alternative is to side with the aging Sunni despots who are headed for the grave and the ash heap of history.
The ash heap of history. A lot more than Mideast foreign policy may be heading there now. The administration’s strategic miscalculations have been vast. Like the Mubarak regime, Washington has been been weighed down by a corrupt memory space. It too is looking for a memetic reboot. From ignoring the fact that the Middle East, not Southwest Asia, was the strategic center of gravity, to starting Obamacare medical program in the middle of a deficit crisis and pushing carbon trading and green energy at a time of an energy and food production are critical, they have set up a whole string of things for an epic fail.
And they will fail. Because if something can’t go on, then it won’t. Gravity wins in the end. A generation of ideologues have spent the Western legacy into the dirt to pursue their fantasy. Now the mansion is dark and water may soon be cut off. The creditors are waiting at the door and calls to friends go unanswered. Slowly the idea may be sinking in. The talk show circuit can’t save them any more.
Bad ideas live on in policy. And bad policy eventually creates a crisis which cannot be solved within its framework. The Obama administration probably ended at the beginning of 2011. It cannot think itself out of problems that it cannot understand.”

http://www.torontosun.com/sports/hockey/2011/01/27/17058421.html
I don’t want to redirect you unnecessarily but Kinsella’s spinning the new Conservative ad the other way. Looking at his postings today I’m not sure his kneejerk reaction isn’t the most telling of all.
He’s suggesting that Harper has lied somehow. I don’t see it in the news links today. Maybe Kinsella’s just as embarrassed by Ignatieff’s Howard Dean moment and that’s the best he can do?
Here comes the Tunisian vote, permanent residency revoked for family. Just caught the tail end of the announcement, so not sure who it applies to. Seems they are applying for asylum in Canada. Hope they don’t get it, and we freeze all their assets, including their private jet.
WK says just because you can doesn’t mean you should, words to that effect. Turn that around to Duceppe, just because you can bloc-mail, doesn’t mean you should. To all those libs dissing Canada in the UAE, just because you can doesn’t mean you should. And finally to Quebec voters, just because you can vote bloc, doesn’t mean you should.
and Taber weighs in here http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/ottawa-notebook/would-tories-use-an-ignatieff-clip-out-of-context-yes-yes-yes/article1885230/
Was it not Jane and someone else with her network that coined Ignatieff’s “yes, yes, yes” as a Howard Dean moment? Actually she does so again in her column.
Maybe Jane you gave the oppo. war room that very brilliant idea.
It’s not as if the Liberals have EVER taken anything Harper has said out of context for their own purposes is it? Give us a break. Even CTV must have known Ignatieff was once again giving a gift to their oppo. team. CTV just put the bow on it by making the link to Howard Dean.
Ted Morton resigns.
And other news, gay activist killed in uganda, warn Scott to stay out of Africa, and I think the UAE is not too kind to gays. Wonder if he told his hosts he is not only gay, but married to a man.
The Liberals must be very worried for Jane Taber to work overtime . I bet smarmy Kady is working furiously to blunt the damage for her pal iggy too.
the backlash by the liberals to this latest ad is a bit over the top. Have the Liberals never taken things out of context for their own purpose?
I think Ignatieff went rogue in that speech to his troops and it was caught on camera as well. Is it ok for Ignatieff to continue to lash out at the PM without the CPC eventually fighting back?
Even over at Calgary Grit the Liberals are trying to say that all Ignatieff was doing in that speech was being passionate – give me a break….again.
Their guy screws up and it’s Harper’s fault. Same old, same old.
Remember that CTV needs to take responsibility for stirring that pot too.
Liberals in the UAE. No surprise there. They are beyond desperate. Look for more desperate moves down the road. Seriously, they’re becoming a security risk for Canada. Given their recent past, we cannot put aside possible illegal activity on their part. Their actions are reprehensible, to say the least. Their lack of respect for Canada and Canadians is disgusting.
BTW, are not the Liberals short of cash?? Desperate and short of cash. Looking bad.
Disappointing would be an understatement:
”…Verner said today that there is no precedent for an arena being built entirely with public funds.
She added that she hopes the arena gets built and stressed that the federal government is not slamming the door on participation.
“The door is not closed from the federal government — far from it,” Verner said.

Evan and Rosemary are very worried about poor Iggy and the new yes ads.
I love it!
Looks like the Conservatives will cave. Terrible!! Some reports that they are divided on the issue of the Quebec arena. If so, is it a particular group within the party that wants to fund it? If it happens, is it not a reversal of what was originally stated by the PM??

Iggy’s “strange position”. Indeed.
Ah love asbestos bestest says Iggy; or, maybe not.

Has anyone heard iggy say liberals would CANCEL the jet contract. Have contracts not already been let for work in Canada. If there was no contract, why would they be working on said jobs.
Today Marc the astronaut said, there is no contract to cancel should the liberals win the election. It would not cost any money to cancel said no contract. Laurie Hawn did a great job of trying to get the truth out, but with Evan and Marc, I don’t know if he succeeded.
Frank Graves is about to give us the latest poll numbers to see if the ads are working.
In other strange news a Toront leafs fan has had all charges dropped over “waffle tossing incident”http://www.torontosun.com/news/torontoandgta/2011/01/27/17059446.html
I thought for a moment the Awful Waffle had wandered into an arena poured a glass of Beaujolais, raised the glass and his pinky, and started yelling “Yes, Yes,Yes” whilst the Leafs were tanking.
So now little Scotty Brison has flown to the U.A.E. to offer sympathy? Hey if they can make a deal with the Bloc, not too big a stretch to bow and scrape to the U.A.E. bullies.
If only the Liberals cared just a little bit about Canada.
Quite unbelievable really but it is clearer every day in every way, Liberals hate Canada. They will do anything they can to get into power, are they looking for a loan ?
The Bloc wins either way. If they get the funding, they’ll tell the quebecois that there is the proof they’re needed in Ottawa. If they don’t, they’ll say the PM is against the people of Quebec. Also, it’ll tell the quebecois that their vote will bring them money, that the government is willing to buy their vote, give in to blackmail, and demonstrate the party’s lack of principle. My only hope is that this news is just another misinformation report from the MSM.
Gerry Nicholls is one angry dude. Even appears Dan Matheson is taken aback by Gerry’s open hate of Stephen harper.
Fay at 5:36 pm – I missed the clip but I have to say that I am getting tired of his ‘media-alerts’ on his blog. I think that says it all.
The latest Conservative ads are a great disappointment to me. They reflect badly on the party and by extension on the PM, even though he may have had no direct hand in those ads.
I’m sorry, but portraying Ignatieff as saying “yes, yes, yes!” to wanting an unwanted or unnecessary election is DISHONEST.
I don’t give a shit (there! I’m throwing off the politically correct language) about how bad the other side is, how low they can go — I want my side to be better than they are, and these kinds of ads don’t achieve that, IMO.
Shame on the juveniles who designed those ads.
35.4% conservatives, 27% liberals,
And Graves says there has been no change.
Going in the right direction has gone way up.
Two can play at that game. PM Stephen Harper should lay it on the line stating “You want a hockey arena in Quebec City than deliver me a majority and not one Bloc. If there is just one Bloc MP no money for the arena.”
RE:The Quebec arena…
…Wake me up when Quebec makes a actual concrete proposal to the feds. Till then I could care less. B/c the government is going to ride the fence on that issue intill the then.
My question is, why no noise about the Sask Stadium? Now for a controversial statement, is the CFL even a real sport?
Boom..
The CFL line is a joke..
I gather you have never watched a CFL game probably like to get bored to tears with the NFL.

Yes, I watch real football the NFL. Hardcore NE Patriots fan, it’s been a tough couple weeks. Just lashing out a little, and kidding a bit. But the CFL does not have anyone close to this man..

Yes the CFL definitely does not have a”Cheat”.
I’m sorry, but portraying Ignatieff as saying “yes, yes, yes!” to wanting an unwanted or unnecessary election is DISHONEST
Sorry, Gabby I have to disagree. Ignatieff is trying to manufacture a reason for an election which is both unwanted and unnecessary to most Canadians. Yes, I agree there is some dishonesty in juxtaposing his answer in the ad to a question he wasn’t responding to, but at the end of the day, trying to force an election on corporate tax cuts that he avoided voting on at the appropriate time is about as dishonest as you can get. I understand the good guys should be held to a higher standard, but nevertheless, Ignatieff is trying to raise taxes on job creators and is trying to jeopardize a recovery with an unnecessary election.
What is wrong with the new ads?
Has Ignatieff not said that he won’t support the upcoming budget and that he doesn’t support the corporate tax cuts?
It was Ignatieff that started this dialogue in December re the budget and an election so what’s the problem? Both ads say things that are the Liberal position. The ‘yes, yes, yes’ part is pure theatrics to answer the questions posed in the ads.
I guess to further my response I would say, I’m pretty sure the PM has never flown an animated F35 but the Liberals took that and created a narrative and context too.
I just don’t see the issue. The Liberal leader wants an election and that is all the ad says.
Simeon, I love the CFL as well. Toronto wants an NFL team, typical. Argonauts and Maple Leafs, why do they always lose in Toronto? Maybe if they had a majority of Conservative voters, things would change. LOL
Good point you make about the arena, but it’s the bribing that is the difficulty. If only Quebecers, for once, would trust the Conservatives and give them the opportunity to prove themselves. Given that the PQ will win easily the next provincial election, maybe there is hope for a Conservative breakthrough at the federal level. If I’m not mistaken, when they vote separatist at one level they have, in the past, more than a couple of times, voted federalist. Good to be an optimist. By the way, one of my best friends is a genuine separatist. We have been unable to change one another’s political positions. Nice guy, but too bad we couldn’t simply be Canadians period.
Ugh, just watched the political shows for the first time in months. My god they’re awful.
I just don’t understand the outrage from using Iggy’s “yes, yes, yes”. John Ivison is living in dreamland. The last election the CPC went into the poll numbers where 32-31(Nanos). Then these media people saying the ballot question will be Corp Taxes that will not even be in the budget that will trigger said election, ya right…
Whatever, I don’t think there is going to be a election. But if there is, I will put money on the CPC gains seats and corp taxes will not be talked about after week one..
ed says..
” Toronto wants an NFL team, typical”
I don’t think the NFL should come to Canada at all. But if it did, the last place it should go is Toronto. Sask in my mind would be number one, but they love there CFL.
Once again I was just kidding about the CFL comment.
Oh-oh! I’m sure the cbc will be looking for a replacement for Evan after today’s show! He will be in need of a hernia repair after all the heavy-lifting he did for the libs today..and the contortions he went thru trying to get us to pity the libs, probably slipped a disc.Poor Evan…..also,the look on his face when Frank was going over the poll numbers looked as if he needed an enema.

After arguing about “Spygate” for many years I am not going to start on Joanne’s blog…
Oh Gawd! Now Evan thinks PMSH has ‘alienated’ his Christian base! And..how stupid is that gal on with him..she just said ‘the Supreme Court of Canada has just given the ok for Rahm Emanuel to run for mayor of Chicago!” HUH???
The only parties that our consistent on the corporate tax cuts issue are the Tories and the NDP — having maintained their positions from the last election and going into the next. Perhaps the MSM should stop adopting the Liberal position on the matter and start asking that party what else they’re going to reverse their position on. The CBC for example has been playing up that corporate tax cuts are evil as of late — something they didn’t do in the last election when the Liberals had the same position as the Tories. They certainly didn’t want to rail against the tax cuts then… after all, Liberals might have lost support to the NDP if they did.
Was watching P&P, too, on the CBC in the past hour. Funny thing — Solomon and Barton running a segment to “deconstruct” the latest Tory ad, saying that they take Iggy out of context and are very unfair.
Does anyone remember the CBC deconstructing the Liberal ad that showed an aircraft carrier that the Liberal said Harper would spend billion on? Or a hand gun being fired at the viewer suggesting, what, that hand gun proliferation would result from scrapping the LONG GUN registry? Or images of two teen girls shaking inside a clinic after, presumable, they were told that Harper had criminalized abortion?
Nah, let those ads do their damage!
And shame on Barton in particular who played up the “taking out of context” Iggy’s words and how unfair it was. This was a woman who anchored the early edition of P&P a few year ago (that leads into a follows QP) and gave her post QP analysis of the opening of the fall session (Sep 2009) and did not point out how Iggy had disgustingly taking PMSH out of context when, on his first question, he asked “Mr. Speaker… I want to know what the PM meant when he said on tape that he wanted to teach Canadians a lesson”. That’s right — CANADIANS (not the coalition which is what Harper actually said).
I was so disgusted with her for letting that slide! Now she’s got her knickers in a knot, having the audacity to suggest that the Tories have taken Iggy’s speech out of context.
What a piece of work this woman is!

Well, Jad, we’ll just have to agree to disagree.

I don’t have much more to add to what I said previously. If you want another take on the ads, go read a much more cogent critique of the ads than mine here: http://phantomobserver.com/blog/?p=7428
Ed,
the Mayor of Quebec City is doing a real cost analysis, apparently his had a 75% room for error factor…. yah you read that right,
heh Honey, pick a number between 100 and 700 million…
The real cost analysis will take 9 months, yah you read that right too.
So the CPC can rag the puck a long long time yet.
The CPC ads are dishonest? No.
Misleading? Not on the content. Definitely out of context, but true none the less.
Other than whine ‘that’s not fair’ (shades od Dion) …
the CPC doesn’t have to even run them, they are getting lots of media coverage.
Someone needs to ask the Liberal Party why the elected Liberal members of parliament are rushing to visit the UAE?
I need to have this question answered.

Fh – That might be worth an email to those members.
Right on Jon, when the shoe is on the other foot … Evan and Rosemary laugh out loud at any discomfort of the conservative government.
Example is the clip of Peter MacKay’s geographical error. But if a Liberal makes a similar mistake… MSM look the other way.
Why would anyone believe the CBC crocodile tears on advertisements to call out IGGY?

I read your link to PO(who’s blog and opinion I really like), and frankly I almost busted out laughing over that post. Now to be fair my family comes from eastern europe so reading a post about why someone might not vote(regardless of party) over a political ad, just makes me think what a great country we live in..
I don’t know, I just don’t get the outrage over the “YES.YES,YES” ad.
Re: the ads – My initial reaction was laughter. I didn’t take it seriously.
Now if they start running these ads on MSM I’m not sure how how I’d react.
My main concern is, did Iggy actually say “yes, yes, yes way!” or “yes, yes, yes, oui!”? I think the answer to that question could have serious ramifications.
/sarc off

While I don’t think the ads are that bad in themselves, Ignatieff did say Yes,yes, yes, he does want to raise corp taxes, and he looks to be forcing an unwanted election, the use of his yes x 3 quote with the other 2 IS out of context. It may be what he believes and it may be close to accurate, but it isn’t what he actually said.
My worry is that it opens it up to the use of all sorts of out of context ads, some perhaps close/plausible like this one, to the absurd eating cats type of crap we see on you-tube from the fringes of the parties.
If this ad can be justified why not the others?
The CPC has tons of stuff on Ignatieff, there is no need to run anything this questionable, and certainly no need for the backlash that comes with running them. (BTW I don’t expect them to ever hit the airwaves)
BTW Joanne I am stealing the Yes, yes, oui, line.

Ah yes. I’m sure the retaliatory ads are being worked up as we speak. Personally I think this is fine in the pre-writ era, but once the writ drops I think the ads really need to be serious and backlash-free. BTW I like your suggestion of using Blogging Tories as a focus group, Ardvark.

Joanne, is it possible one of my posts is stuck in the filter??
Ed I don’t see anything. Strange…
JDot, yep, Saskatchewan has great fans. In Montreal, we have an amazing coach in Marc Trestman. His novel approach has been very successful. Many years ago I loved following the Bowl games around Christmas and New Year’s. Those college teams put on a great show. Used to watch the Giants on Sunday afternoons way back then but the American game didn’t keep my attention. It always seemed to be three downs and a kick. Three hundred pound guys on a small field. Not much room out there with the shorter, narrower field, and smaller end zones.
I’ve always found the CFL more exciting and a better game. The NHL has a similar problem today. The rinks are too small. The players are much bigger, stronger, and faster. There’s not enough room out there. In the old days, the guys were able to bring the game to a much higher level of execution and skill. In a musical sense, I remember games that reached the level of classical music.

I heard Solomon laughing at Peter McKay’s gaff,
did anyone hear the media have a good chuckle over Iffy’s gaff?
the blunder trio on the same day McKay, Terminator, Iffy
‘…Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff made it a trio of blunders when he unwittingly replaced U.S. Defence Secretary Robert Gates with the head honcho of Microsoft.
”We think that Bill Gates, the (US) secretary of defence, knows full well the problems with the F-35s,” Ignatieff replied when asked a question about the fighter jet.
Ignatieff later used the same event to chide MacKay for his geography mistake
Liberal media bias exposed CTV, we see you
Lisa Laflamme on her National segment tonight
cut Iffy’s gaffe out of the clip
”We think that BILL GATES ( was cut off ),
..the secretary of defence, knows full well the problems with the F-35s,”
and gave the Liberals free prime time advertising , ran the entire jet fighter attack ad.
tell her what you think:
http://twitter.com/LisaLaFlammeCTV
Yesterday morning I e-mailed the PM, with a suggestion for the budget. Today I received a reply, stating it had be fwded to the minister of finance. It usually takes longer than that to get a reply, but you will get one.
Suppose Peter made that error on purpose. We know the media seldom pays attention to our side, so he was testing them.
Bill Gates/Robert Gates is much worse, IMHO. Wouldn’t you think iggy would know the difference, considering he has bragged about his friendship with O’s administration.
Missed the terminator gaffe.
Polls are on our side, and the PM’s base is solid, but both Layton and iggy can’t say the same. Did you read where Layton could lose 12 seats, including his wifes
If we do an ad showing the full context of what Iggy said re Bill Gates, and the clip of the edited version, think Evan and Rosie would do a take on not using the entire truth of what he said. Nah, didn’t think so.
What I love is the MSM’s so-called “analysis” of the Liberal ad and how they choose to focus on the jets and corporate tax cuts it makes reference to and try and use that as a convenient cover to say how wonderfully positive the ad’s content is and that for that reason it’s in stark contrast to the “personal attacks” in the Tory “smear” ads they love to rail against, without pointing out of course that the Liberal ad ends with “is this your Canada or Harper’s?” — once again arrogantly inferring, as Liberals often do (especially when there‘s the whiff of an election in the air), that those Canadians who don’t share the Liberal Party’s “grand vision” of Canada aren’t as Canadian as those who do.
While the Tory ads that focus on Iggy are based on an undisputed truth — namely that the Liberal leader HAS lived out of the country for decades — the Liberal ad itself tries to challenge Harper’s “Canadianess” by attempting to draw a clear distinction between what it means to be a Canadian (your Canada?) and Harper himself (or his Canada?), something which has no basis in reality, considering that he, unlike Iggy, has lived in this country his entire life.
Fair game to question someone’s feel for the nation’s pulse when they have been out of the country for so long; unfair, and just plain nonsensical, to question how Canadian a man is that has spent his entire life here. And for that reason the Liberal ad, upon closer inspection, is the real “personal attack” ad of the bunch.
Just wanted to post a link to that 2004 Liberal ad that features “billions [will be] spent on aircraft carriers” if Harper’s elected (he meant air transport for our troops, of course, so we wouldn’t have to hitch rides with the Americans) and the explosion of hand guns that would result if the “long gun” registry is scrapped, among many other lies contained in the very ad the CBC didn’t feel the compulsive need to “deconstruct”.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OIv1SeSJaE
The corporate tax cuts won’t be in the budget, because the legislation signed in 2007 covered every year’s decrease, to and including the last 1.5% in 2012
It’s a done deal , and at federal and provincial levels
Any change is a tax hike
The jet fighter purchase will not be in the budget either, because the first purchase is not expected until 2015-16 at the earliest, and apparently there is no signed purchase contract to pay nor recind.
The only contracts signed are for Aerospace industry, $$$billions in contracts and hundreds of jobs.
So what will the Iffy Liberals be voting against in the budget, they have not seen.
Is Iffy trying to avoid a very nasty leadership review by trying to force an election?
ps Flaherty hinted at income tax cuts in the budget… Kevin Page would tear the rest of his hair out!
The only time attack ads work is if there is an underlying truth in them. With the two new ads, that truth is there. Yes, Ignatieff supports forcing an unnecessary election. Yes, Ignatieff thinks the corporate tax cuts should be cancelled. So, OK the words are out of context, but the basic thrust of Ignatieff’s thinking is spot-on. And how exactly are the Liberals going to counter this ? By saying Ignatieff doesn’t want an election ? Or he doesn’t think the tax cuts should be cancelled ? Machiavellian, maybe, but essentially true.

Jon – terrific posts. I agree with you. The ads are pure politics plain and simple. If the LPOC and their media puppies want to take their contention that the ads are untrue to the max. let them do it in court. They’ll lose on that score.
You have know bet that if the shoe were on the other foot and it were Harper yipping it up for his caucus that the Liberal machine wouldn’t think twice about using it to their advantage.
The bottom-line is that how much longer could we take being bullied by Ignatieff what amounts to his posturing and bad acting? Ignatieff’s lies and shots at the PM need to be met with whatever’s at their disposal.
Every time Ignatieff’s allowed to go off script in front of the National media he screws up.
Something else to consider is that the LPOC invited the media in to their meeting to see the show. More than a few of them came out of that meeting wondering what the hell Ignatieff was doing. Yet, some of those same people are now writing Iggy off as just being “passionate”.
Nope, in my opinion and up against our calm, confident PM and now even Jack Layton seems very collected when he met the media yesterday Ignatieff looks like a fool. He is as much responsible for the content of those new ads as is the CPC war room.
I’m pretty sure the kneejerk we’re witnessing from the Liberal media and blogs is that the CPC have finally been able to demonstrate that if the LPOC wants to play rough, we can too. I have no problem with that whatsoever in light of the constant insults thrown Harper’s way every chance they get.
p.s. – a quick peak at Kinsella’s website and it would appear that Rocco Rossi’s considering running in the Ontario provincial election…..as a PC.
A bit off topic, Windsor’s media has now turned and are no longer shilling for the liberals we have a chance to send a conservative to Queen’s Park that last conservative was Ivan Thrasher who passed away last week at 100 he was elected in 1952.
A word of caution to the Media, you cannot have it both ways, If Mr Ignatieff chooses to make an ass of himself in public Canadians need to know.
He wants to be our representative, our Leader, he wants to go on the World Stage and speak for us, Canadians need to know what his opinions are, how he handles himself.
So far all I’m seeing is a “FAIL” of biblical proportions, he has no qualities that I have seen that qualify him for the job.
Absolutely no grasp of economics, the fact that the tax relief for corporations is a done deal. The Liberals 100 of them were no shows for that vote.
Willing to sign a deal with the BLOC who would destroy our Canada, Traitorous IMO
He doesn’t seem to grasp his role as Leader of Her majesties Loyal Opposition.
He undermines and denigrates the efforts of far better people than himself and when the are successful it must be due to the efforts of the Liberals 5 years ago!?
The danger here is that if you end up as the Americans have with a person that has not been thoroughly vetted he can do a lot of damage in a short time.
I have seen no demonstrated ability to do his job, he is AWOL most days.
He sees nothing wrong with sending his MP’s to the UAE or Copenhagen to denigrate Canada.
He has never grasped a simple truth if you disrespect a MP or a PM for that matter you are disrespecting everyone that voted for that person, not very smart especially when more people voted for him than you.
The whining by the MSM, hereafter known as Free Advertising For Liberals (FAFL) is rich Passionate Iggy is a loose cannon.
The Liberals are like the snotty little bully on the playground, the first time he gets sand kicked back in his face it is an outrage! Suck it up buttercups!
The Yes, Yes, Yes, lip lickin’ is on topic, weird enough to go viral.
I can remember all the soldiers in our streets, aircraft carriers, guns going off in our faces, we are not allowed to make this up, the Liberals shoveled it off the truck.
The Liberals it seems to me are working their way through the alphabet.
Adscam, saving Canada one manila envelope at a time.
Abortion, our newest export.
Arabs, we must to accommodate them, to the detriment of our sovereignty
Arena, gee maybe a few votes here.
Asbestos, is it really that bad, hey it’s a 500 buck a plate fundraiser!
AWOL, hey, show up everyday to do my job? I still want my entitled entitlements.
A.D.D, could be, I see defiant, disruptive, antisocial behavior here, troubling.IMO
Acting, pretending emotions you don’t feel
