Good job Evan Solomon!

Evan Solomon really shone tonight as a moderator when he had NDP Pat Martin squaring off against Opus Dei’s Father Fred Dolan (H/T Mary T).

I imagine it’s a bit more difficult to call someone ‘creepy’ when he’s sitting right beside you, so kudos to Pat Martin as well for taking up the challenge. Suffice it to say that we all learned a few things tonight:

(1)  Jack Layton didn’t know anything about Pat Martin calling a group of Catholics ‘creepy’ (1:16)  Memo to Jack’s assistant: Get him a newspaper subscription.

(2) Pat Martin says some would call Opus Dei a ‘cult’ (1:18)  Really? Would that include you too Pat?

(3) Piercings give Pat Martin the creeps too (1:18:53)  (Memo to Jack – There goes the youth vote.)

(4) Pat Martin was an altar boy.  (1:21) Ahhhh….

(5) Pat Martin admits it would be very bad to say the same thing about Jews or anyone following the Islamic faith, but being a Catholic ‘steeped in the faith’ gives him the right to say what he wants about Catholics; and mind you he was the HEAD ALTAR BOY!!! (1:24), and he knows more about Opus Dei than ‘Dan Miller or Dan Brown’ or whoever it was that wrote that stupid book.

(6) ‘Creepy’ is a casual remark – Unless of course you’re labelling Jews or Muslims (1:25), in which case he would ‘condemn it from the highest rooftops’.

(7) The Head Altar Boy is too busy to attend an MP meeting with Father Dolan (1:26).

So, good job everyone. Looking forward to seeing Gilles Duceppe in the hot seat next.

And CBC has made one baby step towards redeeming itself tonight.

Excellent review of the program. I might have to change my opinion of Evan.

Mary T – Thanks again for the tip. I think it’s important to give positive feedback when it’s warranted. Hopefully Evan will google his name at some point and read this post.

Let’s hear from Taliban Jack LaytoNDP and Taliban Pat MartiNDP in re this report:

Muslims kill Christian Roman Catholic bishop in cold blood.

    …-

“Report: Catholic bishop stabbed to death in Turkey

ANKARA, Turkey — A Roman Catholic bishop has been stabbed to death in southern Turkey, the state-run news agency reported.

Luigi Padovese, the pope’s apostolic vicar in Anatolia, was attacked in his home in the Mediterranean port of Iskenderun, the Anatolia news agency reported. There was no immediate confirmation from the Vatican.

Private NTV television quoted police as saying the priest’s driver is suspected in the killing, but it did not say if the driver had been arrested. The station said the priest died in a hospital.

The killing is the latest in a string of attacks in recent years on Christians in Turkey, where Christians make up less than 1 per cent of the 70 million population.

In 2007, a Roman Catholic priest in the western city of Izmir, Adriano Franchini, was stabbed and slightly wounded in the stomach by a 19-year-old after Sunday Mass. The young man was arrested.”

Watched the video. Unfortunately, I had to endure Paul Martin, among others, along the way. If you don’t want to puke, avoid the first part of that video which was anti-Harper, anti-Conservative, one-sided all the way.

Solomon, Ditchburn supporting and elaborating the Liberal/NDP talk points. Paul Martin, the hypocrisy & BS coming from his mouth kills me. He sounded as though he was on the Liberal election campaign.

As I said recently, these old guys refuse to get lost. You’d think they’d want to fade away after they screwed up.

He refused to comment on the Liberal coalition idea but he, sure as hell, had no such reluctance to tell our PM what the agenda should be, that global warming should me right at the top. Do you believe this guy!! Unreal!!

The other Martin was an altar boy. Big deal, the devil himself could be an altar boy. His negativity towards his own faith ?? was obvious. Father Dolan seems to have trouble expressing himself. Otherwise, Martin would have been whupped.

Sorry for being crabby but, after watching the first part of that video, I was totally p —-d off.

  5. Ardvark says:

Must see for anyone who did not see it.

I have to give FULL Solomon credit with for that ecumenical moment.

When he asked Martin ‘if someone said Muslims or Jews give me the creeps’ and Martin said that he himself would condemn it, Soloman looked at him and said “So maybe…….” opening up his arms and almost begging Martin to admit it was wrong. Martin didn’t but he knew Solomon had him dead to rights

WTG Evan Solomon, that was classic stuff!!!

Now if only Solomon could talk to Scott Reid about that little issue of correcting that lie about paid conservative bloggers.

Tory senator blasts Harper’s elected Senate plan

    03/06/2010 9:08:06 PM
    CTV.ca News Staff

“Pierre Claude Nolin asked fellow members of the Upper House to vote against a bill, introduced by another Tory-appointed senator, that would allow provinces to elect Senate nominees.”

“Nolin referred to the Senate as the “chamber of sober second thought.” That role would be jeopardized by democratic elections, he suggested, and could lead to more gridlock on Parliament Hill.”

“Nolin’s Liberal counterparts gave him a standing ovation following his speech.”

“Conservative Senator Bert Brown concurred that the Senate should be more independent from the House of Commons. But he defended the bill.

“Stephen Harper is offering this country democracy in the Senate for the first time in 143 years,” said Brown, a longtime campaigner for Senate reform who was twice elected as a Senate nominee in the province of Alberta.”

    http://news.sympatico.ctv.ca/home/tory_senator_blasts_harpers_elected_senate_plan/57eba792

I agree with Senator Bert Brown.
Nolin’s comment is strange to say the least.

“An Ottawa City Councillor has hatched an idea for a one-year pilot project to allow urban residents to raise chickens in their backyard.

Alex Cullen is pushing the motion on behalf of the Canadian Liberated Urban Chicken Klub, called CLUCK.

The Mayoral candidate tells CFRA News it seems like a good idea.

Ottawa’s current bylaw prohibits residents from raising chickens in urban settings.

The Community and Protective Services Committee will debate the issue at the end of the month.”

I must admit that I now watch Soloman, especially since they hired Corey, except when they interview someone for purely partisan purposes. I love his dry sense of humour and incisive comments. It is possible that CBC are trying to attract some conservative viewers, and to APPEAR to be less biased (we get it when they are not, like lying that Roy Romanow supports a coalition). Having Ezra on was also a good move. Power Play is not working as well these days, as Clark is too lefty to challenge people, unlike Mike Duffy.

It is still appalling that they are fueling and actively participating in the Liberal-orchestrated culture war.

  10. MaryT says:

So, have Martin and Duceppe told all the Catholics in Quebec and Canada that the Bloc and NDP don’t want their votes. At least we are not rioting in the streets and having car burnings, and causing other damage. Then, not wanting to creep Martin out, anyone with a piercing is not wanted by the NDP. Does that include ear-rings, if so, there goes the female vote.
Great way to start pushing for a coalition of the losers.
How many members do the libs or ndp have, considering it is reported there are over 100,000 conservative members.
I wonder, did Mother Theresa creep out Martin also.
How about all those stories of beheadings, acid thrown in girls faces, women being stoned, do they creep out Martin, or does he just ignore them and think, that is true religion.

  11. Fay says:

Great post Joanne! Kudos to Evan Soloman. A fair and balanced show today really showcased Evans talent to conduct a delicate interview with respect. Something that Don Newman never did master.
    Next up Gilles Duceppe!

Watched the clip last night (hey, ed! You can fast forward, by putting your mouse on the little icon at the bottom where it tells you the time and pushing it further to the right!).

Pat Martin was caught with his pants down and Fr. Dolan was far too kind to him. I think he was bending over backwards not to rub Martin’s nose in it, however …

Evan Solomon was very good on this segment, nailing Martin, ever so gently, but he sure picked up the cudgels during the Geurgis segment. Tenycke and Capstick had to fight off Solomon and Ditchburn. It bugs the hell out of me when the CBC talking heads shill for the Liberal$, and Solomon was right in there.

    • Joanne says:

Barb – I agree that Evan is often in there like a dirty shirt defending Liberals. I just really enjoyed that ‘ecumenical moment’.

The best thing is to record the show and then fastforward through the crap like the Paul Martin interview.

  13. Liz J says:

Rather sad when we feel the need to give credit to a media host in our employ for being fair and balanced. I wouldn’t get all warm and fuzzy over Solomon. That Ditchburn dame gives me more than the creeps, can’t stand the sight of her.

Speaking of balance, Pat Martin is acting like he isn’t too balanced mentally, even for a Dipper. Of course he has company, the entire opposition is off the rails contributing nothing to the people beyond gotcha games and rendering the HOC a very toxic place.

On the Guergis file, it appears she has new friends and allies in the very people who were calling for her head.

Since then the environmental movement has been going through a period of loss – grieving the loss of an ideal and hoping for a new reality that will culminate in a new global climate change negotiation in Brazil in December.

But the game is up. There will not be a meaningful commitment to climate change mitigation involving all of the leading polluters, especially the US, China, India and Canada. What is more, the general public in Canada, the US and Britain are all signalling that climate change is less of a priority for them now than it was five years ago.”

“The changing face of the environmental movement

What a difference a year makes.

This time last year the environmental movement was gearing up for a major breakthrough at the Copenhagen Climate Change Summit. With a combination of “doom and gloom” soothsayers – Ban ki Moon, Al Gore, Prince Charles, James Hansen, David Suzuki – and optimistic negotiators, it was clear that Copenhagen was being positioned as “the last chance” we had to save the planet.

We know what happened during the negotiations, however. Polluters couldn’t agree with the small islands and the developing world and the negotiations fell apart, with a compromise “lets-look-as-if-we-might-save-the-planet” deal being signed off by a few countries at the end of a tough 10 days of negotiation.”

The difference between these two men is that BERT BROWN was elected by ALBERTANS whereas Nolan, wasn’t. Had Nolan been elected by his people, such a remark would not be uttered by him. It would be considered a slap to his people.

Had Bert said what Nolan said, Albertans would be furious with him and most probably would not elect him the next time around.

Pope JP(11) belonged to the ‘OPUS DEI’ a very conservative religion- no wonder it ‘creeps’ Martin.

  19. Bec says:

My assessment of this isolated improvement in the balance department coming from Soloman can be solely traced back to his interview with Ezra, Marci Mcddonald, forward.

Ezra has hit some basic common sense home runs and when he played the tolerance card comparisons so powerfully, it would take a moron to not recognise the need to show extreme fairness and balance on this topic.
In fact, knowing Winnipeg, Pat Martin could easily be hurt by his comments had he not backed down slightly. I’d say he used the CBC for his benefit too.

And one cannot help but notice,Christians in this country are not taking to the street with demonstrations over their outrage with how some segments are literally vilifying them.
Perhaps that needs some analysis by the special interest hugger’s.

  20. MaryT says:

Nolin has another 15 years in the Senate and was appointed by Brian, so he is a Progressive Conservative. If elected term limits are put in place, he must be afraid he couldn’t win an election.
I still remember when Bert Brown cut swaths in his fields that, from the air, said, EEE. He fought for that for many years.
Our PM has two important position to fill within the next few weeks. A Senator and a new GG.

  21. bettie says:

Someone mentioned not being able to stand Jennifer Ditchburn on ‘Power and Politics’. One that I can’t stand is that motor-mouth blond Liberal gal (I think her name is Sandra). She interrupts everyone, especially a Conservative. I’ve noticed that Kory tries not to interrupt, but he is constantly being interrupted by his fellow panellists. I wish Evan would weigh in on these interruptions and allow Kory to finish his sentences.

  22. Gabby in QC says:

Bettie at 10:56, that motor-mouth is Susan Smith.

During the June 1 Power Panel discussion about the PM’s position on the Gaza situation, motor-mouth Ms. Smith said:
“… He [the PM] is waiting for the evidence. It was a very tepid response yesterday, and I hope that the response gets stronger when the evidence comes out and I hope Prime Minister Harper is pushed … well, I think that if more of the story, if more of the story comes out, if there’s more details about what what was going on, why the, why the boarding of ships in international waters took place, hopefully the Prime Minister will be more equivocal in his, in his response to it.”

Huh? Ms. Smith would like the Prime Minister to be more equivocal in his response to the Gaza flotilla situation? I’m a bit obsessive about proper word usage, particularly when it’s supposedly knowledgeable people who are speaking. Well, Ms. Smith set my ears a-ringing with her use of the word equivocal.
    http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/equivocal
    –adjective
    1. allowing the possibility of several different meanings, as a word or phrase, esp. with intent to deceive or misguide; susceptible of double interpretation; deliberately ambiguous: an equivocal answer.
    2. of doubtful nature or character; questionable; dubious; suspicious: aliens of equivocal loyalty.
    3. of uncertain significance; not determined: an equivocal attitude.

So Ms. Smith would like the PM to be more ambiguous!?!

Personally, I’d like Ms. Smith to be more silent.

  23. ed says:

    batb says at 7:21 am:

“You can fast forward, by putting your mouse on the little icon at the bottom where it tells you the time and pushing it further to the right!).”

Yeah batb , I do that all the time. It’s just that when I saw Paul Martin I couldn’t resist watching it. I have to know what the enemy, yeah the enemy, is up to. So here he was, just like the UN’s Moon, pushing for global warming to be on the G20, G8 meetings. These guys are all in on this fraud. And, get this, he calls it global warming. His friends changed it to climate change, etc. long ago. Martin cannot even keep up with his greenies. LOL

  24. Liz J says:

Gabby, motor-mouth Susan Smith is a real puke inducer whether she’s using proper language or not, her verbal diarrhea is out of control. She’s another example of just how bankrupt the Liberals are at this point IMO.

  25. Ardvark says:

Thanks Joanne. The second I saw the segment yesterday I knew a blog post was needed.

Gabby @ 11:08 So Susan Smith wants the PM to have a stronger response while at the same time admitting that not all ofthe evidence is there for him to have a stronger response. Typical Liberal, she doesn’t know the facts but has already made up her mind. I would note that there is more than enough evidence out there to know this was a set up by the “activists” for PR purposes, but of course Susan doesn’t see it that way.

  26. Gabby in QC says:

Ardvark at 12:17 pm. the sad reality is that the Liberals are living up to Ignatieff’s mantra of “our role is to oppose.” In other words, never mind the wisdom of the position, proposal, bill, or legislation — if it’s been put forward by the Conservatives, it must be bad.

The recent apparent reversal on Afghanistan is a perfect example. First the Liberals wanted our troops out by 2009; then they agreed to a 2011 deadline; and now that the government is holding fast to that decision by Parliament, Bob Rae has decided Canada has a further role to play in Afghanistan, on the basis of his whirlwind visit there.

  27. Gabby in QC says:

    And on another note …

Although Evan Solomon did indeed manage the interview with Pat Martin and Father Dolan well, I sometimes wonder what is the point of some panels, where everyone talks at once. Do the participants think they’re sitting around a kitchen table, all talking over one another, and increasing the volume to be heard? I bet many in the audience don’t understand a word of what is said. So what’s the purpose of such “discussions”?

Yesterday’s Power Panel, with Ditchburn, Capstick, and Teneycke, is a case in point. And Don Newman, who used to run a disciplined panel on his own show, has now become rather rude, usually interrupting others. So, whether young or old, some people just cannot allow others to have equal time for them to have their say.

“Turkish ambassador calls for Hamas to take part in “final solution”

In an unfortunate turn of phrase, the Turkish ambassador to Washington twice said Friday that the terrorist group Hamas is a necessary and important part of the “final solution” to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“Final solution” was the phrase Adolf Hitler adopted to describe his plan to exterminate the Jewish people.

“For a final solution, you cannot ignore Hamas. That’s what we are saying,” said Ambassador Namik Tan. “This is not the first time that we are trying to bring this into the discussion. We have told this to the Israelis, to our American friends, to our international interlocutors, everyone. How could you imagine a final solution without Hamas?”

Tan’s choice of words aside, his comments highlighted the yawning gap between the positions of the Turkish government and that of the American and Israeli administrations, as tensions linger following this week’s Gaza flotilla incident.

Only yesterday, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, “I do not think that Hamas is a terrorist organization. I said the same thing to the United States. I am still of the same opinion. They are Palestinians in resistance, fighting for their own land.”"
