Giving up carbon for Lent

No, seriously!  This is an edict from several church leaders.

I arrived at this incredible revelation on a hunt for the relationship between environmentalism and Catholicism after reading this opinion piece in today’s Record by Community Editorial Board member Ruthann Fisher who is a ‘pastoral associate at St. Francis of Assisi Church’ in Kitchener.  Ms. Fisher begins her piece (which also includes a federal government-bashing) as follows:

“Can we afford to only honour our Earth for one hour or one week?”

As a Catholic and a Christian, I found that sentence very disturbing. I was always taught to follow the first commandment: I am the LORD your God: you shall not have strange Gods before me.

“Honouring” our  “Earth” strikes me as somewhat sacrilegious.  I thought we were only supposed to honour God.

Then there’s that whole ‘afford’ thing – stoking up the old fear factor again.   Is God going to punish me if I burn some fossil fuel driving to the store?  I sure didn’t learn that in Catechism class.  Or is she trying to say that I’ll go broke? Or will my carbon sinning hasten the apocalypse?

As a Christian I believe it is our duty to be good stewards of God’s gifts to us and that includes the earth and all God’s creations therein.

So in my quest for a better understanding of where the Church was going on this I came across this notion of a Carbon Fast for Lent supported by many different religions and organizations.  In fact you are even invited to Light a Lenten candle this Earth Hour -A carbon fast reflects the true meaning of the Lenten season. (Yikes!!!  Are you buying this?)

It’s a strange world today when the only sins that really seem to be ones worth worrying about are those against Mother Earth.

One of their suggestions in the Lenten Carbon Fast PDF (http://omiusajpic.org/files/2010/02/EOC-Lent-Calendar-1_27.pdf) strikes me as particularly odd in the wording. It says, “Remember your baptism today and the power of water.” It then goes on to suggest conserving water. What a strange way to mix religion and environmentalism. They’re really reaching.

  6. Joanne says:

Steph, I totally agree. Very strange. Unless they think they can tap into some popular messaging there (no pun intended.)

  8. batb says:

Yes, Joanne, there are a lot of strange gods around these days, not just in our secular culture. When we begin to worship created things rather than the Creator, we’re heading into dangerous spiritual waters.

All of these environmental heresies were forecast in the Scriptures:

For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers [Suzuki, Gore et al.] to suit their own desires, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths. 2 Timothy 4:3,4

What better way to describe the lies perpetrated by the Green Gurus than “myths”?

Sadly, the Christian Church is full of apostates and heretics whose ears are itching to hear anything but the truth of the Gospels.

It is incredible to me, this lent it is more important to worry about what Lord Al Gore’s-scriptures say about the environment than what lent is all about. Jesus went to the cross to pay our sin debt in full, so we are told to come to him all you who are heavy laden and he will give you rest for your soul.
Now I see that the environmental movement has the sin debts that mankind can be absolved from, by doing the good and right thing in cleaning up environmental messes and the things like abortion are thought to be more friendly to the environment as there will be less people around to pollute “Mother Earth”.
As a Catholic Christian, I see that more and more Catholics are steering away from the scriptures and bible reading and opening more and more to liberation theology of Marxism and socialism as their secular bibles for today. And today’s young Christians as they march off to liberation theology universities and atheist colleges, they end up lapping up all that their professors and tenured anti-God teachers preach as their new truth to believe. And then the children loose their faith in God in favor of liberation theology or atheism and this is the high price the parents are paying for their huge financial outlay. As I see it we indeed are marching toward a time when the whole world will be seeking after a new world-messiah-like-preacher who will bring together the whole world under his environmental influence to bring about a socialist utopia, an artificial environmentally perfect world with no need of looking at their sinful personal lives that need correcting. So no need of a personal Savior for they will have the world environmentally-friendly-savior that no one will be able to disagree with as his power and sway will be over the whole wide world as he will be the kind of Nobel-peace-prize-savior of all mankind.
    Its coming folks!
So look out Christians, you will suffer persecution for your belief in the scriptures that Jesus Christ is the true Savior, which is what lent is all about.

    About the IIGCC

The Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC) is a forum for collaboration on climate change for European investors. The group’s objective is to catalyse greater investment in a low carbon economy by bringing investors together to use their collective influence with companies, policymakers and investors. The group currently has over 50 members, including some of the largest pension funds and asset managers in Europe, and represents assets of around €4trillion. A full list of members is available on the membership page.

    IIGCC’s Objectives are:

    * To encourage a pro-active approach amongst asset owners and asset managers on climate change (through adapting their own investment activities and processes) in order to enhance and preserve long-term investment values.
    * To improve company disclosure/performance on climate change (in their role as shareholders and bondholders).
    * To encourage public policy solutions that facilitate the move to a low carbon economy and are consistent with long-term investment objectives.

IMO, the mainstream churches are overrun with progressives and profiteers.

“Victory: UK Catholic Adoption Agency Wins Right to Refuse Homosexual Couples

LEEDS, March 19, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The U.K. Catholic adoption agency associated with the diocese of Leeds has won its case in the high court allowing it to continue to function according to the teaching of the Catholic Church on marriage and family life. Catholic Care chief executive, Mark Wiggin, told LifeSiteNews.com (LSN) that he was pleased but not surprised at the ruling.

“We always felt we had a strong legal case,” Wiggin said. “In law we felt we were justified. We felt very strongly that we had over a hundred years of history as a Catholic charity providing services to children.”

Wiggin said that Catholic Care chose to fight in court so they could remain true to their beliefs. “Our trustees are committed to the teaching of the Catholic Church on marriage and family life and they cold not disassociate themselves from it,” he said.”

“Architect of Betrayal?: WH Exposes Obama as Provocateur of Catholic Dissention

WASHINGTON, DC, March 18, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs revealed to reporters today that President Barack Obama actively promoted the Catholic Health Association’s public break with the American Catholic bishops to support his health care legislation.

Gibbs also suggested that the CHA and the Leadership Conference of Women Religious’ (LCWR) break with the U.S. Bishops has provided legitimate political cover for pro-life Democrats to switch their votes from “no” to “yes.”

“I think over the past twenty four hours we have seen strong indications from those in the Catholic Church that support our belief that the legislation is about health care reform, and that it shouldn’t and doesn’t change the existing federal law [on abortion]. The Catholic Health Association and the order of nun’s support is very important,” Gibbs told reporters on the White House lawn for Thursday’s press conference.

CHA president Sr. Carol Keehan and LCWR sparked an uproar this week after they came out definitively in favor of the Senate health care bill, which top pro-life organizations such as the National Right to Life Committee and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, in addition to countless others, have strongly condemned as unacceptable for its abortion funding provisions. Since then, in their quest to woo the final pro-life Democrat holdouts among House lawmakers, party leaders have attempted to paint CHA’s support for the bill as a bona fide endorsement from the Catholic community.

So far, the president’s strategy appears to have paid off: some lawmakers have evidently already taken the two groups’ endorsements as an excuse to switch their vote.

Gibbs cited Congressman Dale Kildee’s (D-MI) Wednesday press conference – in which he explained how CHA’s endorsement had “affected his thinking” to get him to support the bill – as a sign that Democrats may be able to get more lawmakers on board in the same way.”

“And please refresh my memory. Where does the Catholic Church stand on abortion these days?”

The same as always: abortion is murder. We do not have the right to take a human life. Human life begins at conception.

On the other hand, many Catholics have had abortions. Actually, many Catholics have ignored Catholic positions on any number of issues.

There are enviro nuts within the Catholic Church just like everywhere else. To me, religion is not the problem. It’s some of the people within.

Just look at the abuse coming to light in Germany. Priests are human with human failings as well. On the other hand, it’s most likely the majority of those involved were never meant to be priests in the first place. I believe people are the problem, not the religion.

Oh, yeah, I’m a Catholic, too.

  41. mary says:

Once again you have a man without God, in charge of the whole country of North Korea and everyone in his country must obey only what this man thinks must happen. In his grandeur he is flaunting the building and firing off long range rockets to show off his power before the world at the expense of feeding his people!
This is what happens when a man becomes a god in his nation and enforces his own will upon a whole nation that he calls his people.
The leader of North Korea has risen to the heights of being in total control of all his people because he is accountable to no one above himself. We have seen what has happened in the past! And Joseph Stalin also had complete total control over all of his people and they all suffered at his hand.
But his death finally came and eventually freedom from him came, as no one can rule from the grave. But they will have to face the judge of all mankind eventually and they will have to account for all that they did while here upon this earth.
So justice will come in the long run for the people of North Korea as it did for the people oppressed by Stalin.
