Bypassing the dinosaur

Don’t miss Prime Minister Stephen Harper live on YouTube at 10:45 Eastern this morning! He will be discussing the recent  Throne Speech and budget (that  just passed with a little help from his Liberal friends.)

You are also invited to submit questions for a YouTube interview on Tuesday evening (7 pm EST).  This format has been recently used by President Obama.

Going straight to the people without the biased MSM filter. Who knew we were that smart to be able to interpret things for ourselves?

Friday Update

Budget aftermath: Planes, pompadours
– L. Ian MacDonald (Sun):

...Flaherty’s travel arrangements became news last weekend when CTV broke the story that he had flown to London on a government jet rather than going commercial at a cost of $800.

As it turned out, one reason Flaherty used a government plane was so he could be up in time to do an interview with, uh, CTV, which initially reported he had commandeered a Challenger at a cost of $9,000, much more than the Cessna Citation he actually flew on at a cost of $3,100. Oh, and because he was doing 11 radio and five TV interviews in the morning, three staffers were along. So their equivalent commercial costs of $2,400 meant Flaherty was actually saving $100

Whether or not the public likes it, right-side values are taking hold. The visionless party, philosophically at loose ends, is the Liberal one. The governing side knows where it’s going and how to get there.”

PM using other channels must hurt the liberals media. And through this channel YouTube, the world will get to hear him.

CBC, CTV, GLOBAL ETC have noone to blame but themselves alone.

Bec, I do believe that’s all we have to do. I’m going to take this off moderation so folks can update us if there are any changes or if readers feel like doing some liveblogging.

  8. Bec says:

Wow, wilson, who is that man and what have they done with Lawrence Martin? Thanks for the link and a really very insightful piece.

  9. Richco says:

It just shows me that the PM knows what most Canadians have known or are beginning to figure out, which is that the media is not to be trusted with getting the story, HIS story out there in an unbiased way. (I don’t mean to lump all media in this either – there are those who do it and well).

He likely also knows that media is being threatened big time by the Internet, and there’s not a damn thing the media can do about it.

Making an end run around the usual suspects is brilliant.

No one’s watching Power Play these days. Well, almost no one:-)

I can’t believe that even with this great news that some still want to talk about those others who don’t deserve our time.

Wilson – L.Martin quote is exactly correct! The PM is a doer…the Liberals well, we can’t even call them “thinkers” any more because clearly there’s still no thinking going on.

One way to judge the pre-event success of this is to go to some Liberal blogs and read the kneejerk venom there…it’s a sign that the PM has pushed their buttons.

  10. MaryT says:

  21. Bruce says:

    Off topic, but………………;

    David Phillips said this on March 10, 2010 to a Vancouver Sun reporter;

From the balmy Arctic, to the open water of the St. Lawrence and snowless western fields, this winter has been the warmest and driest in Canadian record books.

Environment Canada scientists report that winter 2009/10 was 4 C above normal, making it the warmest since nationwide records were first kept in 1948. It was also the driest winter on the 63-year record, with precipitation 22 per cent below normal nationally, and down 60 per cent in parts of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario.

“It’s beyond shocking,” David Phillips, a senior climatologist with Environment Canada, said Tuesday. Records have been shattered from “coast to coast to coast.”

“It is truly a remarkable situation,” says Phillips, noting that he’s seen nothing like it in his 40 years of weather watching. He also warns that “the winter than wasn’t” may have set the stage for potentially “horrific” water shortages, insect infestations and wildfires this summer.

    http://www.vancouversun.com/technology/Canada+warmest+winter+ever+beyond+shocking/2666979/story.html

    Then, the very next day, on March 11, 2010 says this to a Windsor Star reporter;

Environment Canada senior climatologist David Phillips said while the recent weather conditions aren’t record-breaking, they are notable.

“What’s interesting is that you always have these heat bubbles or spring teasers but typically they last one or two days. Windsor has been on a roll in a way,” said Phillips.

He said temperatures have been above freezing 19 of the last 22 days.

So are we likely to see the return of winter?

“When forecasting things like this the past is a guide to the future,” Phillips said. “There have only been two instances where Windsor hasn’t had snow after March 10 since 1946 so if I were a betting man, I would put my money on winter.”

Most researchers find themselves completely out of their league in this kind of battle because it’s only superficially about the science. The real goal is to stoke the angry fires of talk radio, cable news, the blogosphere and the like, all of which feed off of contrarian story lines and seldom make the time to assess facts and weigh evidence. IT would appear that separation is not really their true motive but special treatment over and above any other province or territory.

  25. Richco says:

Lots of good news for the PM today.
Canada’s in great hands, and now with Iffy’s prorogue of his own caucus votes and letting the budget pass, watch those majority numbers start creeping up again.

    Next year?
Not with Iffy as Lib. leader and in the spring or summer?
Not next fall because of Ontario’s provincial election then.

Mary, I think PM Harper has set a record for longest running Minority government and it’s not all down to the Liberals being in disarray and divided, he’s doing a very good job on many fronts that matter to the people, not the least of which is our Military. Sadly, the Liberals haven’t improved to a point where they can even be considered a government in waiting, they can’t even do the job of Opposition, they’ve ceded that to Jack Layton and his Dippers.

  30. dillon says:

    Sammy

Vimy Day? Time to boot this toadie out. It is an improvement over Vichy and the beaches of Norway but far short of the respect due those who fought and died at Vimy Ridge.

  31. MaryT says:

OT, but just received my Sears Stmt, and it included a big ad for Earth Day and WWF. So, pay off the card and stay away from Sears. If Sears was so concerned about the environment, they could quit including those dozens of offers with each stmt. How many trees do they use/year with those.

  32. Bec says:

Good catch, Mary T!! Let them know too! I cancelled Sears when they adopted a horrendous charge for their deferred payment program and sold their credit card company to Capital One (I believe) but had I not disliked their arrogant, sneaky back door method of collecting disgusting interest charges from people, this support of WWF would have done the trick!

  33. MaryT says:

Anyone watching the Briar, it is really great to see the clips of past events, from the 50s etc. Curling sweaters, cigarettes, hat, caps and other headgear, and look at the ladies in the audience, wearing hats. And who knew the announcer, Ray Turnbull has the record of the youngest player to win the Briar, at 17 and voted MVP. That record will never be broken as they changed the rules re age.

  34. Sammy says:

Yup Dillon..Iggy was ranting about PMSH ‘only giving the veterans a Vimy Day’.. he then did some ass-cover,with how he respected the Vets and gave his royal assent to the special day.. went off on this self-important rant, about how his own Grandpa was there for Vimy Day! I just love how he manages to throw in these off the cuff references,to any event, anything and everything,to include himself!Makes me think of the old country and western hit ‘I’ve been everywhere,Man’..followed up by the Beatles tune..’He’s a real nowhere man!’

  35. Liz J says:

So Iggy says his Grandfather fought at Vimy and we’re supposed to add that to this poseur’s resume? A close relative of mine was gassed in the Battle of Vimy Ridge, I’d never use his memory to attempt to quantify my Canadian status. If he could only understand, we are not interested in his family, we want to know what he has to offer,he’s the one who aspires to lead us. So far he is the most pathetic excuse for an Opposition in memory.

  36. Richco says:

Also don’t the Special Olympics start soon? Hopefully the PM will show up there too and tic the LPOC off even more.

  37. Liz J says:

Hey Sammy, Mr Iffy couldn’t hold a candle to Hank Snow but for sure he’s been EVERYWHERE BUT Canada, the Country he returned to when opportunity came knocking at the behest of a very desperate lot, the LPC.

  38. Sammy says:

Good one Liz!!! That clip of Iggy eating seal meat yesterday, and his comment about it ‘tasting meaty’ was a real gem too..he also had to throw in that it didn’t really taste like caribou..like he’s such an outdoorsy, common guy, livin’ off the land! I just bet, that what was really going thru his mind was “how soon can I spit this horrid common-folk food in a napkin, and cleanse my palate with something expensive..and Good Lord, not a Timmie’s coffee”

    The comments!

  40. Joanne says:

Maz2 – She writes “The most stunning blitzkrieg in this propaganda war was the illegal hacking into East Anglia University’s computer.”

Somebody calls her up on that in comments. But the alarmists do like to equate AGW skepticism with the Holocaust for some reason.

  41. Calgary Junkie says:

I’m pretty sure Ignatieff said, during his reply to the Throne speech, that his grandfather [William Lawson Grant], “fought with the unit that fought at Vimy Ridge…”

    From this book review
    of his True Patriot Love

The next section focuses on his maternal grandfather, William Lawson Grant, who was wounded in the Battle of the Somme in the First World War …

    Then from Veteran Affairs Canada

“Though it is often overshadowed by the victory at the Battle of Vimy Ridge, Canadian soldiers displayed the same bravery and determination in the deadly fighting at the Battle of the Somme. Many hard lessons were learned in those muddy battlefields ninety years ago—and the Canadians’ success at Vimy Ridge owes much to this earlier struggle.”

So my question: why does Iggy
parse his words in a prepared speech, to
leave the impression that his grandfather fought at the battle of Vimy Ridge ?

Why not just say: “my grandfather was wounded at the Battle of the Somme …”.

Anyway, just add this to the pile of Iggy embellishments.

  42. Joanne says:

(Go suck a lemon, Tom!)

Carole Taylor is a great commentator; I loved the look of chagrin, and the note of “darnit” in Tom’s voice, when she pointed out that the CPC budget, intended to get the deficit down to 12-million from 54-million in two years, is pretty good.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Tom. Maybe you’ll choke on the smoke. I rather hope so.

  51. Rich says:

Batb I also watched the show, and I to was very impressed with Carole Taylor and Don Drummond and Rabbior can not remember his first name. Both agreed that they best way to handle the economy was to cut government expenses: Taxes to be raised as a last resort. Tommie boy certainly had a pained look on his face, I think he must have been suffering from constipation.

Next interviewer was a Gabe Kaplan and I still at a loss to know why he is ever invited on the show.

  52. Bruce says:

Just caught the very end of Power Play which I’ve been purposely avoing of late and was pleasantly surprised.

Carol Taylor pointed out the lack of Liberals sitting behind their “leader” in question period today, then the NDP guy, forget his name, says that the opposition can’t force an election now or in the foreseeable future, the Jean Lapierre tops it off by saying Stephen Harper and the Conservatives are right and Kevin Page is wrong re: the Budget, follows up with Page has been wrong all in all of his predictions previously.

I thought Tom Clark was going to start crying.

And I’d say that all of the Liberal knives are now sharpened, will Iggy even make it to his “thinkers” conference?

    Rae Daze was conspicuously absent.

  53. Sammy says:

Tom mentioned the cbc should go! Rosie Barton and Chris Hall didn’t seem to care for that!
BTW,what the hell is the matter with Tom Clark and his absolute OBSESSION with Jaffer/Guergis affair? At Issue panel just discussed this too,and ole Petey got a bit tuned up by Allan Gregg about ‘he who casts stones’ OMG..Hebert just made comment that ‘PMSH pulled strings behind scenes over Jaffer!!! Allan tells her it’s ridiculous to say that.
I did LOVE what Jean LaPierre had to say about what losers the Libs are,and how hypocritical Iggy was to pose in front of closed doors of Parl..yet all the empty seats in HofC for Budget vote..Tommy Clark didn’t care for that comment.

  54. Joanne says:

Yes, Tom Clark looked very let down today. All his interviewees with the exception of Kevin Page seemed to be saying that the Government was on the right track. So why did Mr. Iffy vote against the budget? And why did he prorogue so many members of the Liberal caucus?

  55. MaryT says:

I think we need a video, Liberals on Prorogue, with all those absent moving across the screen. And maybe list all those missing every day from QP.

METRO VANCOUVER — A late blast of winter hit Metro Vancouver Thursday blanketing parts of the region in snow and bolstering the snow pack on local ski hills just in time for the 2010 Paralympics.

Residents living at higher elevations such as Coquitlam and Burnaby awoke to several centimetres of snow on the ground and shuttle buses replaced the articulated bus service at Simon Fraser University because of snow covered roads on Burnaby mountain.

Meanwhile, the region was also battered by strong winds as Environment Canada issued a wind warning for areas around the Strait of Georgia and the North Coast Thursday. Winds of 70 km/h were recorded on the South Coast while up towards North Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii winds reached 100 km/h. ”

” … residents of the West Coast were ready to brag about an early spring with cherry blossoms in full bloom.

Thanks Sammy for watching CBC/Mandsbridge so I don’t have to. So our PM is a “Tecno-geek” having his own Stephan Dion moment? Really? Well Mr Mandsbridge from where I’m sitting you are looking a lot like one of them guys working at the ACME buggy whip factory. I have not watched anything, on your network that calls itself “News” for quite some time. Really what is the point of tuning in to see PM Harper speaking when I know I will see him in the background speaking no audio, while a talking head (you sir) tell me what you think I should hear. HM PM Stephen Harper has stepped around your silly little program and you are no longer needed, you have been irrelevant for some time. Sell the CBC to Fox for a dollar! Perhaps the Liberals could use a “Anchor-man” send your resume today!

  59. Liz J says:

Hey Bubba, the Liberals already have their “Anchor-man”, make that “men”, Petey Mansbridge and Tommy Clark, at least we aren’t paying for Clark, but a more blatant pair of shills for the Liberals we have never seen.

Yes, they have become irrelevant, they did it to themselves, they just haven’t caught on to that fact yet.
