How will Climategate affect Earth Hour?

H/T to Bruce for reminding us that Earth Hour will be rearing its ugly little head once again on March 27, in spite of the Climategate revelations and all the other scandals that followed it.

I see the WWF is still demanding action on climate change.

How about if we push back and demand some honesty?

The New York Times Fights Back Against the Climate-gate ScandalMyron Ebell, Fox News:

“Climate scientists are paid to do climate science,” said Gavin A. Schmidt…. “Their job is not persuading the public.”

If only that were so, even in the case of Dr. Schmidt. True, his salary is paid by American taxpayers, but it is almost certainly the case that over the past few years he has been spending a good part of his time during office hours and using government equipment to produce political propaganda for RealClimate.org, a web site run by Schmidt and Michael E. Mann. RealClimate.org has received help from Fenton Communications, the key P.R. firm for the Soros-funded left.
Thus Broder portrays Schmidt as just a scientist trying to be left alone to do his job, but in fact Schmidt is primarily a moderately-skilled political operative working to promote global warming alarmism. Here is Broder quoting Schmidt again:

“What is new is this paranoia combined with a spell of cold weather in the U. S. and the ‘climategate’ release. It’s a perfect storm that has allowed the nutters to control the agenda.”

“Nutters” is English (and Schmidt is English) slang equivalent to “nut” in the sense of crazy person. Well, Schmidt should know—his boss is the director of GISS, Dr. James E. Hansen. Hansen is widely considered to be the leading scientific promoter of global warming alarmism and as such is a highly political animal. He is also increasingly kooky and extreme…

Global Warming: Gore Vs. Gunter – NP:

Honey bees aren’t dying off because of global warming; they’re dying off because of a tiny mite that has plagued hives for decades. Polar bears aren’t dying off for lack of food to eat or ice to cling to. They aren’t dying off, period.

And the devastating melt of Arctic ice in 2007? Turns out the ice did not melt “in place.” According to a recent study by scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, wind pushed more Arctic ice than usual out into the Atlantic that year where it melted simply because that ocean is warmer than its Arctic counterpart. Not because the Arctic is warming rapidly.

Could this wind shunting have been caused by global warming? Sure. But it just as easily could have other, natural causes.

The point is, there is no consensus on climate science. There never has been. By flinging names like “deniers” at skeptical scientists, barring them from IPCC deliberations, preventing them from seeing the warmers’ raw climate data and keeping them from having their papers peer reviewed, activists like Mr. Gore and the scientists who agree with them have created an artificial consensus.

While that may be good politics, it is very bad science.

That Rick Mercer skit was right on when it mentioned a “token gesture”. That’s exactly what Earth Hour is. Even if I were an environmental type I would still feel silly turning my lights off for an hour one day a year as if that will accomplish anything.

  2. Joanne says:

Steph – Agreed. Or they could keep their lights on and just purchase the carbon offsets. That would certainly make a difference right? /sarc off.

  3. Soccermom says:

So ridiculous! I always fool my family – tell them Earth Day is on another day, then turn on all the lights in the house on the real Earth Hour. Then the next day I have a good laugh! I’m the only one who pays attention to the news around here…serves them right! LOL

  4. Soccermom says:

But as for your question, Joanne, how will Climategate affect Earth Hour? It won’t at all. It’ll still be pushed by all the talking heads and gullible people who haven’t been paying attention will fall for it AGAIN.

  5. Liz J says:

Fully intend to light up the darkness on the so-called so called silly concoction called “Earth Day”.

You’ll be able to pick MY house out, because it will be the one with every light on in the house during Earth Hour.

It’s soooo grating to listen to Liberal shills in the media, Greg Weston et al whining about how the Conservatives are spending money flying around on government jets doing party business. How do they know this? Min. Flaherty is getting flak for going to London Ontario pertaining to his role as Finance minister. Did they keep tabs on the Liberals during their decades in power or were they part of the “team” and being wined and dined for their efforts? There’s got to be something behind this extreme effort the media is putting out to get the Liberals back in the drivers seat.

I keep our light and power usage to a minimum every day and have since I had to pay my first utilities bill.

I certainly don’t do this stuff for the WWF and NEVER will, I do it for ME.
As a matter of fact, anything or any company that has anything to do with the WWF is boycotted by me. Loblaws and Superstore come to mind for those interested in a starting point.

For now, I think I will ignore Earth Day as well and cook up a storm, ALL DAY, turn on many lights, do my laundry, use the dryer and not the line. Sucking up the cost will give me so much pleasure because I will be boycotting an organization that has a problem standing on the side of facts.

I wonder how much power(and energy) the LPOC wasted when it wasn’t necessary – during prorogation? How many return trips to their homes? Cab fares, utilities, cafeteria staff, security?

Now since the house has resumed the Official Opposition is still full of hot air. That’s got to have some effect on the health of MPs that have to sit through it.

On the CTV program Question Period, John McCallum the Liberal finance critic, (who hopes some day to be Finance Minister, since he said on your program we “are the government in waiting”) should be the last one to draw any restrictions on the use of government jets by a finance minister. We are well aware that Flaherty does have the luxury of either flying commercial or government jet, depending on the what the situation demands, but John McCallum, as history has shown, is not always welcome and has been denied boarding a commercial air line, not because he was late or failed to pass security inspection, but because he failed the alcohol breathalyzer, as gossip would have it. Since McCallum chose to turn your show into a “gossip panel” as Ted Menzies pointed out, it is appropriate to address this point. Would Canadian taxpayers condone McCallum’s use of government jets as finance minister because he is prohibited from flying commercial jets – I suspect not? Canadians have always been prepared to accommodate ministers and their use of government aircraft if it is necessary, but they would not be prepared to foot the bill for McCallum , as finance minister, when he is denied boarding a commercial aircraft.

“IPCC AR4 Commenter: “I do not understand why this trend is insignificant – it is more than three times the quoted error estimates”

    by Chip Knappenberger
    March 8, 2010

Another error in the influential reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports has been identified. This one concerns the rate of expansion of sea ice around Antarctica.

While not an issue for estimates of future sea level rise (sea ice is floating ice which does not influence sea level), a significant expansion of Antarctic sea ice runs counter to climate model projections. As the errors in the climate change “assessment” reports from the IPCC mount, its aura of scientific authority erodes, and with it, the justification for using their findings to underpin national and international efforts to regulate greenhouse gases.

Some climate scientists have distanced themselves from the IPCC Working Group II’s (WGII’s) Fourth Assessment Report (AR4), Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability, prefering instead the stronger hard science in the Working Group I (WGI) Report—The Physical Science Basis. Some folks have even gone as far as saying that no errors have been found in the WGI Report and the process in creating it was exemplary.

    Such folks are in denial.

As I document below, WGI did a poor job in regard to Antarctic sea ice trends. Somehow, the IPCC specialists assessed away a plethora of evidence showing that the sea ice around Antarctica has been significantly increasing—a behavior that runs counter to climate model projections of sea ice declines—and instead documented only a slight, statistically insignificant rise.

How did this happen? The evidence suggests that IPCC authors were either being territorial in defending and promoting their own work in lieu of other equally legitimate (and ultimately more correct) findings, were being guided by IPCC brass to produce a specific IPCC point-of-view, or both.”

Using WWF’s own carbon calculator, JunkScience estimates the trip in the lavishly fitted Boeing 757 will burn about 100,000 gallons of jet fuel, producing 1,231 tons of CO2, the equivalent of putting 1,560 SUVs on the road over the same period.

Baroness Ashton of Upholland has come up with a suggestion to improve her much-criticised performance as the EU’s top diplomat — her own aircraft.

Lady Ashton, who has been lambasted for a lack of visibility as Europe’s High Representative, is expected to clock up about 500,000km (300,000 miles) a year for the next five years.

She will this week complete 100 days in the post but has found herself seeking lifts from EU foreign ministers and air forces. She has been criticised after failing to be in two places on one day, missing a meeting of EU defence ministers in Spain while attending the inauguration of President Yanukovych of Ukraine.

Although it is not clear that having her own Lear jet would have helped in this case, it is becoming clearer that she cannot rely only on commercial flights or the goodwill of others. And nothing would give a boost to her low profile better than her own aircraft.”

The world will almost certainly fail to draw up a new treaty on climate change this year, the minister in charge of last year’s Copenhagen summit has admitted, delivering a heavy blow to the barely flickering hopes for a swift global settlement.

Connie Hedegaard, the Danish minister who masterminded the summit of world leaders on global warming last year and is now the European commissioner for climate change, told the Financial Times negotiations were not progressing fast enough for a treaty to be signed soon.

She also gave warning that pushing too hard for a treaty this year could be counterproductive.

“To get every detail set in the next nine months looks very difficult,” she said. “Europe would love that to happen, and I would love that to happen … but my feeling is that it is going to be very difficult to get a treaty.”

Her pessimism echoed that of the outgoing United Nations climate change chief, Yvo de Boer. He told the FT as he resigned last month after four years of seeking an agreement that he could not see a treaty being signed this year.”
