Good on the National Post for calling out the liberal media – Look who’s proroguing:
…Those who recently attacked Prime Minister Stephen Harper over the same issue will insist this prorogation different, that Mr. McGuinty is forcing his legislature into only a “limited break” of a couple of weeks or so. But the prorogation of Parliament isn’t much longer — just five weeks, given that the House of Commons was scheduled to be on its annual Christmas break until late January anyway.
But the uneven coverage shouldn’t surprise anyone: The treatment of the Tories has been hypocritical from the moment they asked the Governor-General to suspend Parliament…
The ‘limited break’ phrase shows up in the headlines of many media outlets who obviously received their talking points from lefty headquarters, but when you look at the Ontario Legislative Assembly site, there doesn’t seem to have been a whole lot of activity since December 10 (H/T Gabby at Crux of the Matter.)
A healthy democracy requires truth and balance in the press, but here in Canada we seem to have little of either.
Thankfully we have bloggers, freelance writers and ordinary citizens writing letters to the editor, who are all working hard to expose the hypocrisy and unfairness. And of course we thank the National Post for having the courage to swim against the tide.
Let’s call the federal anti-prorogation movement what it really is – a convenient way to harness and direct the ‘partisan malcontents‘ – which appear to be comprised of Harper-haters, left-wing professors and students, unions, red media and assorted Anti-Conservative pols and workers.
So it’s up to you to help spread the truth if you truly care about ‘democracy’. Most of Canadian media is clearly on the other side.

Iggy sends list of questions for B.C. politicians to ask PM – Sun:
...B.C.’s Opposition New Democrat Leader Carole James says Ignatieff, his Liberals and her New Democrats, are capable of asking Harper tough political questions outside of the legislature.
B.C.’s Social Development Minister Rich Coleman says he doesn’t want to step into federal politics, but he supports Harper’s visit to the B.C. legislature...
Way to go, B.C. Legislature!! Good for you. Please teach Mr. Iffy a few lessons about propriety.

It matters not what the PM does, the good news gets short coverage then they go on to slagging and digging for pathetic stuff like how mean he is, how undemocratic his proroguing is, yada, yada. McSlimey on the other hand can prorogue after not sitting since Dec. 10 to return at an undisclosed date after the Olympics. What’s the difference? He’s LIBERAL and can do no wrong, scandals are forgotten.
Thank goodness the liberal msm is dying is all I can say. They can try and prop Iggy up, but no matter what they do, he still comes out looking like an idiot.
Ekos has a new poll out, and I wonder what caused the libs to drop 2.6% back to 29%. Could the truth about prorogation, or maybe his abortion plan, the threat of a coalition, the phony protests, or maybe people waking up to the bias of the media.
Poor Kady must be heartbroken, and so close to Valentines day.
Will she be blogging Happy Ekos today. And if we can convince the cbc that the drop is her fault, will they keep her.
This kind of thing makes me so angry…where did all the thousands of facebook angry protesters disappear to??…McSlippery can walk on water it seems…but oh right…he is a Lieberal!!!
The MSM(usual gang)should blame no one but themselves for the ‘comming’ of their own downfall. They keep attacking the PM for no apparent reason what so ever but that, he is Conservative.
The National media make it a point to deny the prime minister’s speeches to the public especially areas where CBC is heavily situated.
Many canadians don’t have a clue ‘what the prime minister has done for them in the international scene. they are kept secluded from reality.
Some canadians still blame Mulroney for the liberals problems. It never ends. Not until we have another media like FOX to set the ‘record straight’.
In the meantime, the usual HYPOCRISY continues.
The facts will speak for themselves during a campaign. The fundraising and grassroots support should not be discounted.
Canadians are much smarter than the Liberal media gives them credit. Look at the Americans and how far OBAMA has fallen in popularity. With his super majority, now only a NUMERICAL majority he can’t push his legislative agenda through.
They are blaming a single network, teabaggers for being unable to get their democratic congress and senators to support the OBAMA agenda. Makes sense!
The fawning of most of the MSM in the US and Canada over the Obama led Democrats and everything Liberal not manifested itself at the ballot box on a national scale yet. The single loss of a Liberal safe seat may be sign. Too early or small to tell how this will play on larger scale.
Around the thanksgiving dinner table with our family, friends we decided Harper and his team were the best to lead through the tough times ahead.-Nik Nanos Post Analysis October 15, 2008.
Since 2008, the opposition with the support of the liberal media have thrown numerous fake stories, scandals against the current government and been unable to sustain a gap for their favourite party outside the M.O.E. for more than a few months.
Is the new normal for the Liberals to become an urban party based out of Toronto/Montreal/Vancouver with 30%-33% support levels?
Our media can not sustain the attention of Canadians who tune out politics on a regular basis. The Liberals are not organized and without the NDP propping up the rent a mob protests on a regular basis the media would have little to publish.
How much money and energy are the NDP spending in pushing 50-100 people to show up with pre printed signs?
“This kind of thing makes me so angry…”
Amen, ladee J @9:08 am!
However, I believe the angry protesters were encouraged by misinformation and I also believe, they were the “join anything crowd” from FB. On any given day, there are 10+ crazy ‘join’ groups that pop up on my FB site and the same people join them all and play along.
When I actually heard the kid that started the site, I relaxed. He was so misinformed that I had a difficult time believing that he was active in a post secondary program.
Reacquainting our youth with facts and realities about the system that their country operates under needs to be ramped up in the curriculums. Instead, they have been fed a steady diet of Al Gore and equally useless garbage.

Looks like my hunch was right, eh? Pretty much zero coverage, forget about outrage, over McGuinty’s prorogation.

On a related matter, in today’s Waterloo Region Record (local division of TorStar), op-ed space is provided to former local Liberal MP Karen Redman to moan about prorogation again and how she feels it is an attack on democracy. Rather rich coming from the former Liberal whip under PM Paul Martin who famously declared that her party would ignore any non-confidence motion of the House during the Gomery Inquiry / Adscam / kickback investigation days.
Of course, the Record could not find the space to report on the McGuinty prorogation…
Stevie J – I know!! I saw that piece and I am blistering angry about it. I don’t see it online but the Red Record gave her half a page to fill with her propaganda!!!!! And she took a swipe at Stephen Woodworth who is always a gentleman when referring to her.
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRrr
Here’s a sample:
Harper’s prorogation left over 30 pieces of legislation suspended midprocess. Only with unanimous consent from all parliamentarians will a bill be returned to the stage it was at when Parliament was interrupted. Bills dealing with tougher sentencing for white-collar crimes; clamping down on child pornography, a new free trade deal and new consumer product safety measures had been fast tracked through the parliamentary system with the help of the Liberal opposition, only to languish on the order paper in the face of Harper’s move to end the session of Parliament.
Now correct me if I’m wrong here, but didn’t the Liberal dominated Senate interfere with some of this legislation?
Liberals back down to 29%, after a month of non-stop antiHarper media attacks and Iffy laying out ‘policy’.
Stunts, all stunts, and the professionally organized protest stunts continue with the media mis-reporting the events.
Donolo did not get the message.
Canadians are sick and tired of the game playing and divisive politics.
That includes b.s. like national daycare promises you can’t pay for and pulling out the abortion card.
If I remember correctly Joanne, the Senate amended legislation until it was nothing like that passed in the House, not so much stalling it.
Just like the Opps amended the Accountability Act in the House, making some if it toothless, then blamed the Harper government for the Act being weak.
Of course the media went along with the Opps version.
Joanne@10:43
“Now correct me if I’m wrong here, but didn’t the Liberal dominated Senate interfere with some of this legislation?”
You not wrong, Redman is wrong and she knows it. If the Liberals were soooo concerned about those bills, they would have gotten on their senators case and made sure they were passed in a reasonable time but they stalled and gutted a couple of them.

p.s. Kady had the Libs dropping by 1.9 points from last week’s EKOS. But the fall was 2.9 points (31.9 – 29.0)
You may remember soon after the prorogation was first announced, a poll came out that said nearly 70% of Canadians either didn’t care or supported it. But Kady O’Malley kept the wheels spinning with “PROROGUE WATCH 2010″, then they were able to parlay that into the Facebook Group under the guise of “should the government get paid not to work?” (which itself was a false statement because the government has been hard at work).
Polls are polls. Even when it slipped down to tied, I was not concerned. Especially since the CBC providing pseudo-celebrity status to the “easy being Green” EKOS kingpin Frank Graves who was banging the drum loudest of all. Lest we forget, last April EKOS had the LPC creeping into majority government territory. How did that work out?
I would like to think that our government’s fantastic economic performance relative to our G8 partners will trump pausing parliament for the Olympics….which starts tomorrow! All will be well because the Iceman said so!

“George Galloway And The Left’s Alliance With Terror
Jewish Press ^ | Feb 10 2010 | Richard L. Cravatts, Ph.D.
The news that British MP George Galloway was the planned guest speaker at a February 1 Hamas fundraiser at Boston’s Palestinian Cultural Center for Peace would, in a morally coherent world, be alarming for those in the West who wonder why elected officials should be gathering support for a group of jihadist thugs whose principal efforts are dedicated to the extirpation of Israel and the murder of Jews.
Here again is yet another instance of the dangerous unholy alliance between Islamists, with a specific agenda to dilute Western institutions and destroy Israel, and leftists, who, in accommodating radical Islam, not only enable what Robert Spencer has called a “stealth jihad,” but help facilitate it.
Galloway, whom the wry commentator Christopher Hitchens once described as “being 100 percent consistent in support for thugs and criminals,” has been actively raising funds for his current pet project, Viva Palestina – including from those attendees at the Boston event. Palestina has as its purported goal to shuttle in “aid” to Gaza, but that assistance has been in the form of cash given directly to Hamas – designated as a foreign terrorist organization (FTO) by the U.S. State Department, Canada, and the EU.
Galloway’s pernicious fundraising road show has also included visits to American universities. In October 2009, for instance, in an action that seemed to give credence to notion that there was, and remains, a sinister and dangerous side to anti-Israel activism on college campuses, the U.S. Justice Department initiated an investigation into possible illegal fundraising on behalf of Hamas participated in by UC Irvine’s Muslim Student Union (MSU). Based on a formal complaint by the Zionist Organization of America, the investigation centers on allegations that Galloway had raised funds for the Viva Palestina project.”

Could someone tell me why an elected member of Parliament is organizing protesters, the large number of pre-printed signs is a tip off Libby. The police said they removed chains from the doors, MP Libby Davies appears to be closing in on “Hedy” out there somewhere territory. At best they crashed a Community Celebration, their brand of petty partisan politics is offensive and childish. MP Libby davies said “she didn’t see any chains” I would like to think she mis-heard the question and that she “didn’t see any BRAINS at the protest”
To chain or impede egress from a building is against the law for a lot of very good reasons, fire, medical emergency come to mind.
My wife and I were accosted at one of the early on rallies for Conservatives in Victoria, they looked a lot like the bunch in front of the Chinese Community center in Vancouver. No one will ever change someone else’s mind by attempting to intimidate or coerce them. These rent-a-crowd tactics by the NDP arm of the Coalition are annoying, but ultimately will fail to produce their desired results. They do serve to make people realize just how juvenile some of the NDP’rs are. You should be ashamed MP Libby Davies!
I monitored CBC and CTV political shows last evening, and unless I missed it, the word prorogue was not mentioned. This after a month of steady commentary on both programs. To talk of the federal prorogation would surely lead to the Ont. story, better to move on to the next PMSH scandal, whatever that may be.

If nothing else, these rent a mob protests show the rest of Canadians what kind of people support a coalition.
I would encourage all to read the comments at Stephen Taylors, especially the one by a young girl, former street person, and her experience as a protester and how the ndp organized them, told them what to say, how to act and how to plead ignorance if they got in trouble. I don’t imagine much has changed, except the ndp is being exposed.
What do they expect to accomplish at the BC leg today. The only ones they are embarrassing are themselves and the coalition hopefuls. Why would Mr Iggy be asking opposition MPs to ask hard questions, isn’t Campbell liberal.

No. Fox News is the laughing stock of US and world media. They are so obscenely biased toward the bible-thumping, banjo-playing, put-us-back-into-a-dark-ages-theocracy Republican population in that country they make our Liberal-slanted media look downright fair. You can bet that nearly everything that comes out of Fox news will have an anti-Democrat, pro-Jesus slant that is unwarranted in what purports to be the archetype of free societies.
Canada needs a media organization similar to Fox like we all need a case of herpes. Instead, how about news media that report fairly the good and bad? I don’t think that’s too much to ask… particularly of the CBC which is well-supported by Canadian tax dollars regardless of what party is in power.
Ah yes. Squid is an atheist. I hesitated to link to his blog for that reason, but the post was good. Oh well.
“Squid is an atheist” God loves him too Joanne, maybe even more.

Have you caught the latest breaking news is that the Liberals now have a list of demands for cancelling their spring vacations? This includes extra opposition days, which is a delicious slice of irony. Increased access to opposition days. Anyone else remember 2004/05?
I know this is off topic, but I just need an explanation: Here is a protest organized by Libby Davis that stellar Dipper protesting against the closure of insite drug clinic. How come Ms Davis complete misses the report from the UN critizing Canada for maintaining illicit drug injection sights, but yet jumps all over the Conservative Government for not abiding by the IPCC Kyoto Protocol. Second how could Ms Davis allow these protestors to barricade seniors in the Chinese Cultural Associaton, don’t they know that this could be dangerous. I guess its okay for a publicity stunt to gain a few votes. I hope the constituents of her riding see this for what it is a farce and vote her out of office

Wow. Peter Donolo is a bully. He must have learned that from the ultimate King of Mean power mongering bully PM Jean Chretien.
Somehow it just makes the Liberals look old fashioned, stupid and shallow. Donolo using all his pollster buddies to try to push pull polls to favour the Ig is absolutely transparent. He is soon going to run out of pulling favours of all his old media buddies as THEY are starting to look stupid.
Rehashing the 1993 Redbook – again old fashioned and way way way behind the times. It proves the adage that when the only tool you have is a hammer the whole world looks like a nail. All Donolo has is old Chretien unkept promises and mean tricks. How is any of that going to help the citizens of this country move forward?
Donolo is trapped in a time warp and the rest of the country has moved on. At least his time warp is 1993- Ignatieff’s understanding of our country is from when he left in 1978.

cbc babes reporting that protesters are already gathering at the BC leg. They include numerous groups including those from yesterday. Will they chain the doors of the BC leg.
They are determined to get their message out according the babes. The message I get is, we are the coalition, and we are their rent a mob of the day. Is this an example of Kady’s flash mobs. No reporters will get near the PM today, and security is very tight.
With hundreds of media from around the world in BC, these idiots might not like the coverage they will get in other countries. They fail to accept that our PM has a great standing and respect in other countries.

“Bring on FOX NEWS CANADA!”
AMEN!!!
Joanne’s post:
“So it’s up to you to help spread the truth if you truly care about ‘democracy’. Most of Canadian media is clearly on the other side.”
The sad reality is that “what Canadians believe” comes out on top. And “what Canadians believe” is not necessarily the truth, not by a long shot.
Too many Canadians, in their hectic lives, read the headlines and watch news clips only. They are fed a daily diet of lies, half-truths and misleading statements. Everyday they listen to intellectually dishonest comments on the radio and TV. People are gullible.
Being negatively reinforced repeatedly, it’s no wonder that the public begins to believe the lies. The lies become the truth.
Somehow the Conservatives have to find creative and novel ways to reach out and connect to the masses. New ways must be found to “spread the truth.” The truth must get out and be heard by all Canadians.
People tend to believe what they hear and so far all they hear, by a wide margin, are lies, lies and more lies.

Re: the Kitchener/Waterloo paper – can we see a rebuttal from you to Redman’s BS?
Mary T – I didn’t think that the fellow who wrote about Iffy’s NYT essay was giving him a pass at all. I actually think just the opposite. He made Iffy look like he’s just clued-in to the facts and character of a country that he’s very new to. The writer makes even Iffy’s piece look all about him.
Re: Iffy’s questions for Harper – EXCLLENT on the B.C. legislature folks for educating the man who thinks thoughts. That’s what happens when you crown a leader who has little experience in Canada let alone knows how things work and where he stands vis-a-vis provincial politics.
I hope to heck that the CPC OPPO. team has folks following Iffy around the Olympics to pick up more Iffyisms…..like we need them. That list has to be getting pretty long.
Hope you all enjoy the Olympics….but not on CTV if you can help it. There are other choices out there.
Yes, Joanne, it’s possible to support our federal Conservatives and not believe in bronze-age superstitions. I know that’s difficult for many people to understand, but it’s true. And best of all, our numbers are growing.
One of the things I’ve liked about Harper is that he’s kept his personal religious views largely out of his politics, and that’s a very good thing – something we could teach our neighbours to the south. Making good government, not pushing a religion… that’s what politicians are paid for.
re: Newsbusters – it’s known for it’s pro-Fox, right-wing slant as well. You can’t call it fair and balanced when its purpose is to not be fair or balanced. If you want balance you have to get your news from many sources.
Thanks to all of you for the chuckle about calling me a bigot and then suggesting that because I’m an atheist that linking to my blog might be some kind of risk. Made my day
P.S. – The PM is kicking ass in the BC Legislature as I type this. What a wonderful, WONDERFUL leader he is for Canada, and what a totally inspiring speech!
Canada is in great hands.
I’m positive that no Iffy essay nor speech could ever come close to being as patriotic as Harper has been with his speech. I guess he’s just not into us – Canada.
Hey Squid – The Conservative Party is a big tent.
P.S. – what was even better watching the B.C. Premier’s remarks was that he gave Harper all sorts of kudos for his vision and support. So too their Official Opposition. Harper deserved it…and more.
Iffy can suck rocks!
CBC never covered the Premier or Opposition responses. Went right to prepared propaganda by Evan. He was going to be discussing with someone if Canada should pull out of the Buy American agreement cause all we will get is scraps. Yikes. But, they did not show any coverage of the rent a mob via the NDP. At least while I watched.
Breaking in with news of Clinton was a low spot for CBC.
I thought it was breaking news, but it was a little old, as Fox was reporting a few minutes later he had had two stints put in and was resting fine. Anything to diss the PM.
We have to find the time story broke on US media, and how long it was before cbc had it.
Bet they could have waited another 10 minutes to try to appear on top of the story. But, they have some babe at the breaking news desk and I guess she had to earn her pay.
Great post Joanne. Even those that claim that there is no media bias in Canada have to be scratching their heads over how different these 2 prorogations have been covered by our MSM.
As for the CBC and Bill Clinton; if Clinton would have went to St. John’s Newfoundland for medical treatment the CBC might have had a good reason to interrupt but other than that the story could have waited.
Calgary Junkie @ 11:34 great link I thought Mr Ignatieff’s head was gonna explode! here he is all the way from Ottawa just wants his question’s answered! Please! PM Harper just answer my questions! Then he gets asked a few pertinent questions and his eyebrows are shootin’ right up to his hairline, go back turn off the sound and just watch his eyebrows, too funny, thanks CJ! Between himself and Rantin’ Ralph they have about as much charisma as a half eatin’ discarded “Corn dog”
Evening news in Montreal on Global, CBC and CTV: not a word about PM Harper in B.C.. We were hoping to see him delivering his speech as reported by Richco. As a result, Montrealers are probably unaware of the PM’s speech in B.C..
Ed, the PM’s speech is available at the CTV site.
But, but, but, there was also no coverage of the protests at the BC speech. What happened, too much flack from yesterday, or no cameras, or no protesters. Some cbc babe had reported about an hour before the speech that they were gathering and would include every group imaginable.
On our evening global it did mention the speech and showed the PM being escorted into the Chamber. CBC was mainly on the olympics, the weather, clinton, and the murder in Trenton.
No mention at Bourque, but newswatch Canada has a story that the mother, father and brother of those 4 women found drowned in a canal will face murder charges.
Democrats in the US are dropping like flies, Patrick Kennedy says he wont run again. Too bad a few liberals don’t take the hint.
“it’s possible to support our federal Conservatives and not believe in bronze-age superstitions.”
Its also possible to be a Christian and make a positive contribution to society and not be sucked in by every clown in a lab coat that says he knows how life began.
Could the spineless creature give us some thoughts on first cause?
Bryan et al:
Certainly. As soon as you explain how your deity got there, I’ll posit some first causes.
If your explanation is that “God was always there” then I counter that with an identical explanation back: The stuff of the universe always there, perhaps in a different form. Because if a magic god can be there, so can the stuff of a non-magic universe. There’s always an answer that doesn’t involve magic.
If you want better arguments than the cosmological argument about the existence of god, read Aquinas, and some of the religious scholars through history. You might even try actually reading the Bible cover to cover, and take note of the contradictions that are littered throughout it, then taking those notes to your pastor or priest and having a long discussion about why the inerrant word of god is so full of, well, errors. You will probably find this process educational.
If you want more reading about the weaknesses of the Cosmological (first cause) argument, I suggest you search the web away from sites like Fox and Answers in Genesis. The weaknesses of the cosmological argument have been well documented in many public fora and are not worth repeating here because it’s off-topic for this forum. I suspect you know all of this in any case.
Joe:
Absolutely. However, ignoring the work and evidence of those lab coat guys puts you at an extreme disadvantage in understanding how the world works, why it works, and how it’s going to work. Every person is free to hobble themselves and their understanding, but those people shouldn’t expect everyone else to respect deliberate ignorance. It’s good to question, it’s bad to be sucked in blindly – whether you’re talking about the findings of a guy in a lab coat, or the readings from a bronze-age book of tribal myths by guy in a fancy robe with a stiff collar.
It’s funny how religious “conservatives” will question science down to minutiae looking for anything that can be seized to make a “neener neener you’re wrong” statement, even to the point of denying all contrary evidence to their pre-conceived notions… but will not examine their religion with the same rigour.
Someone once said that “We’re all atheists. I just believe in one less god than you do.” There’s truth in that.
I’d like to see a return to traditional political conservatism: Small and efficient government, effective spending, and slow but steady social progress to make a more free and happy society. I will dig my heels in to resist any return to the promotion of religion by the government as we used to have with things like Ontario’s “Lord’s Day Act” and the various blue laws that restrict what consenting adults can do in the privacy of their homes that doesn’t hurt anyone else. Bringing that stuff back isn’t conservative, it’s control-freak nonsense.
CPAC ran the BC speech again yesterday and likely will again. If you can do yourselves a big favour and quit watching what pisses you off. If you really have to tune in, keep writing the sponsors and papers to complain. Don’t feel you have to be a victim of the bias…everyone here is capable of making themselves heard somehow.
NB Tory Girl has some clips up also.
One thing will become very clear over these next two weeks. Our PM Stephen Harper is at these games as a fan, supporter, leader and Canadian. He’s awed and inspired like every other man, woman and child is by our country and what we’re showing the world.
Mr. Ignatieff will never come close because what his stunt re: the BC legislature shows us is that he’s still a tourist in his own country. He’s likely going to the Olympics to move his political agenda and to be entertained, wined and dined because he’s the silverspoon he is. Clearly not like middle class Canadians.
