Facebook prorogue foes: Lend them your chequebooks!

Paul Wells has an excellent message for the Facebook group that’s got itself in such a huff over the prorogationMoney (or action?) where your mouth is:

…In the third quarter of 2009, according to Elections Canada, 39,785 individuals donated to the Conservatives for a total from individual donations of $4.5 million. By contrast, 17,810 individuals donated to the Liberals for a total of $1.9 million, and 13,655 people donated to the NDP for a total of $1.1 million. (This next bit gladdens the heart: 2,688 individual donors to the Bloc Québécois, for a total of $221,259.20. Cut public subsidies for political parties? When I see numbers like that, sign me up.)

But I digress. By a very rough measure, if about half of the people on the Facebook group actually made a new donation to a political party, it would begin to close the financing gap between the opposition parties and the Conservatives. And if they don’t, it won’t…

And if they still have some leftover cash they can help out these deadbeats.

Update:

This Facebook group needs some more members – I support PROROGUE of Parliament and the Prime Minister of Canada. (H/T Green Leaf)

Of course the Conservative supporters are always very generous with the donations.

And don’t miss this - Peter Mansbridge interviews the PM – tonight.

    hilarious Joanne!
This just gets better and better.

Stephen Taylor also has a beauty post up on the proroguing issue. He also unearths..dare I say it…a time when The Waffle told an untruth about his sick mother(you’ll have to read it to get the full effect).

  2. MaryT says:

Wonder if there will be any catcalls-deadbeat, pay your debt, when MHF or the others get up to raise a question on transparency, honesty, respect for the law or whatever else they rant on, especially about the in and out thingy.
Opposition benches might show restraint, but the viewers wont.
We will wonder what the media would do if it was a conservative who hadn’t paid.
It appears that most of the media and print still haven’t learned how to count. They are IMHO relying on the stmt, tell a lie often enough and people will believe it.

  4. MaryT says:

About those liberal donations, didn’t Iggy make some kind of statement months ago re, every MP must have x number of members in their riding, and they had to have a least x numbers committed to donating x amount/month. And didn’t he say any that don’t meet those requirement would not have their nomination papers signed. I think it was around the time he was crowned leader.
And, OT, but has the Speaker ever ruled on those two liberal mps that marched thru the streets with stolen files.

  5. Liz J says:

Not much spare cash in the Liberal Mother Hubbard bank to help the “deadbeats”. They’re Liberals, they’re broke, Elections Canada will give them more rope. Wonder if they charge interest?

  6. in a huff says:

closing in on 38,000 in a so-called huff. big mistake thinking this is all about iggy. the word “arrogant” becoming increasingly an adjective attached to Conservatives. if that doesn’t worry you, it should.

  7. The_Iceman says:

Interesting that Liberal donators + NDP donators = the number of people who joined their anti-prorogation Facebook group. I don’t do Facebook, but I am curious to see some of the more asenine groups to surpass 30K. Hamster Racing? Lepers against chicken noodle soup?

  8. It would be good for those birkenstockers to do something more productive outside the bristol board marches.

  9. Richco says:

in a huff – not worried one itsy-bitsy bit because the word Iffy is fast becoming a verb. Pretty soon when someone says “Oops you Iffied that issue” or “Iffy THIS!!”, ’tis the LPOC who better be worried. No one can Iffy arrogance as well as The Waffle himself.

“Do the Iffy” – it’s like the hustle but the brows get a workout too!

Where’s Rick Mercer when we need him?

  10. NeilD says:

Completely OT but those four global warming deniers who had to cancel last month because of inclement weather will be on the Michael Coren Show this evening at six here in Ontario. I’ve read that he’s now available in Alberta too so check it out.

Back to topic, I hope the PM mentions the four times Chretien prorogued Parliament tonight when he’s interviewed by Peter Mansbridge. Not only did I NOT protest those prorogations I don’t even remember them. That’s how important this all is to me.

    Me bad Canadian.

  11. MaryT says:

Check out who NB Tory Gal is. I plan to join her on facebook.
She has given up blogging, but nice to learn she is well and active.
OT I know, but many of us have wondered what happened.

  12. Joanne says:

Thanks for the Coren tip, Neil D!

  13. Alberta Girl says:

“closing in on 38,000 in a so-called huff.”

And to think that the group “Look-A Bandaid” has over 83,000 members

Most of these people wouldn’t even know what “prorogue” even means, they join because their friends have joined.

  14. Gabby in QC says:

Pardon my ignorance about navigating Facebook, but how does one sign up to support the group NB Tory Lady formed?

I clicked on the link provided here, but all I get is three or four comments, but no instructions on
    1. leaving a comment and
    2. how to join the group in support of prorogation.

I think it’s a great initiative to start a group similar to the anti-prorogation one, but if only a few tech-savvy people sign up, the effect would irrelevant, no?

  15. Alberta Girl says:

You need to go above the comments where it says “go back to I agree with prorogin….etc. ” It takes you to the group where you can join.

This link takes you there – you can join on the right hand side at the top

    http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=240544201629&topic=12401#/group.php?gid=240544201629

    Good luck.

  16. Gabby in QC says:

Alberta Girl at 4:56 pm, thanks for the info. but I still don’t know how to lend my support. Perhaps I have the wrong idea of what to expect … like a petition with a list of names attached supporting prorogation.

The page you linked to looks like a group of Facebook friends who are not necessarily involved with this particular cause.

In contrast, a Facebook page I happened upon yesterday promoting anti-Canada sentiment because of the seal hunt had a list of comments supporting that cause and a place for adding one’s own comment. Unfortunately there too, I was stumped. I tried to add a pro-Canada pro-sealing comment but could not beyond composing my comment.

  17. Alberta Girl says:

If you click on Joanne’s link in her post, it will take you to where you can post comments of support on the wall. In my link, you had to click on the ‘wall’ at the top.

This is definitely not a petition – just a group of supporters. Hopefully this answers the question??

  18. Fay says:

I had the same problem Gabby. I am looking for my 19 yr old daughter to help me out.

  19. Fay says:

Out of the mouths of Babes. My daughter says you don’t join groups on Facebook, they do nothing!

  20. Joanne says:

My daughter says you don’t join groups on Facebook, they do nothing!

lol!! Well she needs to tell that to our MSM. ;)

  21. MaryT says:

It was nice to hear from NBtorylady after such a long absence. Still trying to figure out how to comment, but will master it. (my g/son is home to show me)
Watched Evan and deadbeat Volpe was on and told a huge lie, he said with Parliament shut down he can’t ask questions re Baird’s announcement today. Hey, and Evan didn’t call him on it and tell him, hey it is not shut down, it is on recess.
Oh, and today of all days, Volpe mentions something about Fiscal-
Snippets of the interview with the PM tonight.
My thoughts on why liberals are against bodyscans. Might show that Iggy doesn’t have a backbone.
And why have a protest on Jan 23, during the regular recess. Jan 25-Mar 3 would be a better bet.
Again, Evan just mentioned that Parliament is on Proroguation NOW. Not true.
If the opposition is so upset, what would they do if the PM cancels the Easter Break, and next yrs Christmas Break. Listen to them howl.
And as for those bills, would the Senate pass 32 bills in 10 days. Loved how the PMO’s spokesman kept referring to the Ignatieff Senate.
And again, the facebook message, Wish you were here, showing an empty HofC. Wonder if whoever posted that spends his holiday at his place of work.
Who was it that said, Stupid is as stupid does.
I called CBC re Evan’s interview with Volpe and allowing a lie to go unchallenged. Wish he would have asked, when will you pay your debt. Elections Canada should garnishee all their paycheques till debt is paid.

  22. Peter B says:

Did Canadians have to listen to more shrieking and fear mongering about H1N1, door knobs, carnival sized cheques, body bags, and abusive treatment of Taliban with a shoe for the whole month of February during the Olympics. And also wait for this Canadians – the Liberal party, the Party of Pierre Trudeau led by their crusader Carolyn Bennet want to get back into the bedrooms of Canadians, and make the state of sex toys a priority for the Canadian government. Although I am surprised that the Liberals haven’t called for an early recall of parliament or an emergency debate on the sex toy crisis, is this what upsets the Liberals and some political pundits, about the prorogation and a delay of getting this subject to the head of the order paper. Is this really what the outrage is all about in the political columns? I think Canadians saw this coming and would rather enjoy the Olympic games then a question period and exhausting debate for days on end, on the state of sex toys in Canada, which would receive the usual expansive coverage by the media.

  23. MaryT says:

Comments re the Manbridge interview are somewhat vicious. The interview has been taped already, snippets were on Evan’s program. If people are so concerned re timing of said, during the gold medal game, why didn’t they show it on Evan’s program. The cbc does the scheduling, not the PM.
Funny how no anti-harper person seems to get the truth. Parliament is not prorogued till Jan 25, 2010.

  24. Gabby in QC says:

Thanks again, Alberta Girl … I may try again.

And Fay, thank you too, for making me feel better about my being a techno-klutz … there’s comfort in numbers? ;-)

  25. Fay says:

Yeah Joanne, maybe the message about facebook against porogueing is being manipulated by CBC. What else is new! Is commenting the same as joining a group facebook?

  26. Sammy says:

Het guys…just here to brag a bit..got to see Olympic Torch today in Steinbach!AWESOME TURNOUT!
Re the whole Facebook thing, just now on ctv out of Wpg,story about some teens out of Selkirk,Man arrested for posting threats on this ‘kiddie’ site. That’s what Facebook is..for stupid kids to post hate!!!

  27. Kunoichi says:

I noticed something interesting among my facebook friends who are joinging the anti-prorogue group. The ones that are the most extreme right/Western seperatists, as well as extreme left/Harper-haters, are joining this group. It’s been rather amusing to see the names popping up on my live feed. Right and left, with nothing in common but their hatred. Who’d've thunkit?

  28. Calgary Junkie says:

Much of Charles Adler’s show today was on the prorogue. It’s in the CHQR Audio Vault here Bring up Tues, Jan 5th @12:35 PM

Lots of good stuff from Ezra Levant at the start.

Let’s fast forward to around the end of March, and what could transpire by then … Throne Speech and budget get passed. Harper brings back the outstanding crime and other Bills as they were, packages them into one omnibus Bill, forces the Opps to vote for it or lets go to the polls. Same thing with Senate Bills on term limits and election of Senatore–vote for them or we go to the polls.

Bang, bang, bang. All the meaty policy stuff gets through, while the Opps howl and wail. Hey, you guys wanted get back to work, so here it all is.

  29. Fay says:

Matt Gurney has an interesting article up at the National Post. He has found out that any comments in favour of governments porogation are immediately deleted. While obnoxious comments and pictures are welcomed. I wonder if this is being run by the same trolls that harrass Hunter?

  30. MaryT says:

Sammy, I will out brag you, LOL, my cousins daughter is carrying the torch in Chilawack, B.C., and our new grocery store owner is carrying it in Okotoks, AB. Both will be on display around town after the event.
Sorry, couldn’t help it. Time to cheer for our hockey team tonight.
    Go Canada Go.

“Liberals mock PM for being on vacation – while Ignatieff’s on holiday

By: Joan Bryden, THE CANADIAN PRESS

OTTAWA – It was a lesson in why politicians in glass houses shouldn’t lob stones.

The Liberal party made a light-hearted attempt Tuesday to poke fun at Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s decision to impose a three-month parliamentary vacation and wound up instead raising questions about the whereabouts of holidaying Grit Leader Michael Ignatieff.

The Liberals launched an online contest challenging Canadians to come up with brief suggestions for the automatic “out of office” reply that would explain Harper’s decision to prorogue or suspend Parliament until March 3.

They offered a few samples, such as: “Hi. My pollster advised me to lay low until the Olympics bring me back into majority territory. Sorry for the inconvenience.”"

  32. Joanne says:

The ones that are the most extreme right/Western seperatists, as well as extreme left/Harper-haters, are joining this group.

Kunoichi, that is fascinating. And it can only mean that our PM has clearly laid claim to that coveted middle ground.

  33. Joanne says:

CJ – Thanks for Adler tip – I caught a bit of his show but will have to catch up.

BTW, Michael Coren was fantastic tonight. Can you guys get that out west?

Ah yes. Donolo truly is the Grittyssiah.

  36. Shrug says:

I’m not the ‘Facebook’ type but I did go to that page with the intention of supporting the effort . However, it seems you have to actually join Facebook first and they ask for you (real) name etc. Hmmm that gave me pause so, being backward, I didn’t proceed. I might try again though.

Anyways, I just finished reading Brian Lilley’s blog post and surprise surprise …. prorogation isn’t all that uncommon and use to be the norm at one time. Plus this:

Historically, as the prime minister’s staff were quick to point out on their conference call last Wednesday, this current session that has just been adjourned is not that short. The average number of sitting days for a session of Parliament, since confederation, has been 109 while the current session came in at 128.

To read the whole thing: http://www.newstalk1010.com/node/1045491

Oh, I did do a lengthy reply to Jim Travers screed this morning (Why Quiet is Good For Steven Harper) but it never made it into the comments. I have no idea why. Disappointing to say the least because that one really cried out for a rebuttal.

  37. Joanne says:

Shrug – Not being a Facebook user myself, I can’t help you on that one.

BTW, next time you do a reply to Traversty, be sure to copy it here. I suspect that they don’t like too many negative comments at the Star.

  38. maz2 says:

“Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff informed his caucus during a conference call Tuesday that he expects them to report for work on Jan. 25.”

Iffy is on holiday. From where did Iffy’s call come?

    Provence, France?
    Hawaii with O?
    Tehran, Iran?

From an apres-ski phone booth behind the bar at Mont Ste. Agasp des Hezbollah Coderre, PQ?

  42. MaryT says:

I think, if one searched all the comments posted on various blogs during the past few days, someone suggested the libs would try a stunt like trying to get into the Parliament bldgs, cameras in tow.
Will iggy have to be body scanned returning from Europe, will it show he has a spine.

  43. Joanne says:

    lol!! Good question Mary T.

I’m just listening to the Adler segment about body scans right now (CHQR around 2:30 pm). These body scans seem to be more of a false sense of security for air passengers than a serious mechanism to ferret out terrorists. One expert said that there is no way that the scanners could detect explosives stuck in a human orifice.

I was shocked when I read this op-ed. The phrase “public shift” is a mean spirited euphemism for “reactionary response among the unwashed rabble”.

This usage reveals how parochial his view really is, and how much Brooks and his nervous herd are feeling besieged these days.

It hasn’t occurred to them yet, despite their shining intellects and brilliant oversized Ivy League brains that their encirclement is completely their own unforced error, the result of mounting colossal blunders, complete misappraisals of affairs and enemies, and a general misreading of reality.

His feigned urbanity smells of fear. The enemies of American smell it on him, smell it on Obama.

If this nation is forced to suffer for the egregious unforced errors by this radical administration and their burping chorus of toads in the Media and Academy, then I hope this cabal of scum pays the price in full measure for their foolishness, their hubris, and their deep betrayal of The People.”

  47. Calgary Junkie says:

Joanne, yes we get Michael Coren @ 6 pm on CTS.

  48. MaryT says:

This is completely off topic but very important.
If you use a cell phone to call 911, do you know where the call goes to. Is it traced to your address, and EMTs are sent there.
Today there was a bad accident on the Canamex highway just north of the 49th parallel.
When calling 911 they ask for your address, and on rural roads and highways there is no address.
The ambulance searched for 15 minutes trying to find said accident and finally had to call 911 to get better directions. They did not get an Alberta operator.
Fortunately there have been no fatalities reported, but it is obvious they were not local people.
So, if you have a cell phone, and are travelling away from home, check to see where a 911 call is directed to.
Remember the case where a family in Calgary called for help and help was sent to their previous address in Ont.
When crossing the border at Coutts, AB, any accident on the highway is north of Coutts. But to the EMS team at Coutts, unless it is specified it is on the highway, they would do as they did in this case. Head out on a country road, north of town. Weather conditions at the time were horrible.

  49. MaryT says:

And where was that interview taped, in Ottawa. Gee if one listened to the media or facebook they would think PMSH is on vacation somewhere out of the country. OOPS, that is iggy, and layton.

  50. Bec says:

    To SHRUG, JOANNE et all….

You can join Face Book, incognito if you so choose. I fear that many folks will balk at this site (although social sites are really cheesy) because of that aspect and this particular one is hostessed by a well known blogger and intended to prove OUR point.

Wish that I could ‘hang out more but……another reno in the works….argh….WHY do I do this to myself? However I am checking in when down from the ladder and grabbing a tea…ha

  51. Joanne says:

Bec – Good point about joining incognito.

You’re working on a reno that late at night? Wow.

  52. Ruth says:

Doesn’t it seem just a little strange that the Liberals would all show up for work on Jan. 25 when most of their seats sat empty in QP all fall.
    Just asking.

  53. Alberta Girl says:

I find it interesting that CBC scheduled the PM’s interview DURING the Gold Medal Game…

    coincidence? hmmmm

After all, wouldn’t want many ordinary Canadians to see and hear the PM, that way, you can keep telling your lies and no one is the wiser.

  54. Liz J says:

AG, I think we have good reason to be suspicious of the timing of the PM’s interview. The PM always does well with straight talk, no BS, no matter who interviews him so another reason the likes of Petey M and CBC would choose that specific time. Of course most people can tape for later viewing, even people who normally don’t watch hockey would be tuning in to that game. It would be interesting to hear the stats on that interview.

  55. Joanne says:

For anyone who missed the interview, you can see it online here (Two videos at right).

  56. MaryT says:

Sammy, watched the Torch coverage on TV last night. You were right, great turnout in your neck of the woods.

  57. Shrug says:

Thanks Bec. I signed up this morning….#100.

  58. Jen says:

I hear that the opposition party/ies and their senators plan to return to parliament on schedule date.
I wonder who will be the ‘speaker of the House’ since Peter Melikin(surname unsure?) will not be there nor the prime minister and conservative party.
Could it be that Robert Fife, or Mansbridge or anyone from their clan pretend to be the Speaker of the House’.

  59. Jen says:

Regardless what time or place or whatever country the prime minister is at doing business. The taliban favourite national media CBC deliberately prorogues airing the news. which today, many of us have not seen.

  60. CatherineF says:

My guess is if the thousands of people who eagerly signed up on Face Book, protesting the “proroguing of parliament” by the PM, were as eager to read and digest the Canadian Constitution and Constitutional Conventions they would have become aware that proroguing is just a government tool used by many governments throughout the world.

The work of government and the prime minister goes on 12 months of the year, however, members of parliament only traditionally sit in the House of Commons about 114 days per year, folks thats about 3.5 mos per year. Most of MP’S work is done in their ridings, not in the House of Commons.

Prime Ministers of Canada since Confederation 1867 receive their extensive powers to govern and administer the government of Canada through the Canadian Constitution and Constitution Conventions.

The opposition does not share these Constitutional rights. Governments govern.

The Trudeau Government used proroguing a total of 8 times in 16 years, Chretien used proroguing 4 times, all for selfish and political reasons.

Prime Minister Harper has done what government’s do when they need to re-examine the government’s legislative agenda for 2009, then bring in a budget that reflects that reality, as well as 2010′s. Prorogue! YES!

  61. Alberta Girl says:

CatherineF – you are sooo right. I have been at the anti groups – I finally had to leave… the anti Harper rhetoric is at an all time high – the hate is oozing out of the computer. I have never seen anything like it. The misinformation and outright lies are incredible. I fear for our country.

Of course – they all say that Chretien had a majority so it was OK…GRRRRRRRRRRRR

  62. CatherineF says:

Now Alberta Girl, if you would only copy my comments to Face book and wherever, you have my permission to do so. I am not a user of these sites, if you are I encourage you to do so.

Appreciate any help from anyone of like minds to get better information out there. Thanks.

  63. The Liberals are so eager to get back to work they won’t bother to cut short their extended Christmas break! Kudos for the Liberals they are consistent.
