Portrait of a beaten family

Dana Chatwell’s testimony yesterday paints a picture of a beleaguered and psychologically abused family that has given up. They have been totally abandoned by the OPP and the Ontario Government.

Christie Blatchford’s column is especially poignant in her description of some of the horrors the family has had to endure [profanity warning]:

Earlier this day, a Caledonia youth had fired a pellet gun at a sign on the railway tracks near DCE. The natives were furious and claimed children in the area could have been hurt; apparently, this youth was later charged.

Yet, though this had nothing to do with Ms. Chatwell or her family, location dictated that they would be punished for it.

The order of escalation went like this: Natives on the site began setting fires, one close to Ms. Chatwell’s home; she or Mr. Brown phoned the police; OPP officers showed up; Ms. Chatwell wanted to call the fire department but was urged not to by the officers.

In the result, with Dax videotaping, as many as a dozen furious natives stood off and screamed profanities just feet from the deck where the family, some invited guests and several uniformed OPP officers were now gathered.

Among the shouts that could be distinguished from the chorus: “You’re white – get over it!”; “You white mother fucker!”; and “I’m glad you think it’s a fucking laughing matter; let’s see how you feel when they get shot!” To the OPP, one man could be heard screaming, “You better be staying all night long!”

( . . . )

Asked by her lawyer Michael Bordin how she felt, Ms. Chatwell said, “Terrified, especially when the cops are standing there, doing nothing.

( . . . )

“I never realized how much psychological damage has happened to him,” she said. “He is beaten.

“I saw a mouse the other day,” she told the judge, “a mouse in the house.” Every day since, she said, Mr. Brown has promised, “I’m going to get that mouse.” But eight weeks later, the mouse is still there.

“That mouse has beaten him,” she said.

“He can’t even fight a mouse in our home. I don’t know if he will ever be the same person again.”

And yet so many Canadian politicians and media sources  still seem obsessed with alleged Afghan detainee abuse. Incredible.

Update:

Kelly McParland: Politics and the despair of Dana ChatwellKelly McParland:

In a way it’s like those appalling moments when people hear the screams of someone in distress, but are too fearful of their own safety to intervene. Except in this case the abuse went on and on, plenty long enough for people to know what was happening, consider the situation at length, and still not come to the rescue. And it’s not that they were afraid to help, or didn’t want to, but that they couldn’t, because someone somewhere had reached the pervserse [sic] conclusion that abandoning the Browns to their fate was justifiable if it furthered the policy aims of the government...

  2. Joanne says:

Bert, it would be most productive to direct your concern and anger by contacting your local political representative on this matter or email Dalton McGuinty.

  3. Liz J says:

Appears we really are not protected from these [allegedly] militant Native slugs who we pay to support. Even if they are employed they pay not a penny in taxes, are above our laws and contribute nothing to the coffers.

The people of Caledonia are being abused by [alleged] thugs and the OPP and governments are [allegedly] standing by as observers letting it happen. It’s terrorism in Canada. Why are WE letting them away with it so long?

Laws that don’t apply to all citizens in a democracy are useless. It’s long past time we pull the plug on Natives, if they want to live among us, use our facilities, let them join the mainstream. This appalling saga should be enough to get the ball rolling but sadly it won’t happen in our lifetime due to gutless politicians.

  4. Joanne says:

Again I have to ask that we remember who is enabling the situation. That is where the anger should be directed.

You can’t really blame the Natives for taking advantage of McGuinty’s spinelessness.

  5. Bec says:

It is difficult, to say the least to follow this story from my part of the country and now, with this testimony, I have clarity as to why.
No one has given a damn about this family, other victims (?) and the obvious attempt to ‘shut the windows so the neighbours don’t hear and see’ by the Ontario government,is an act of massively, enabling the offending bullies.

Both authors (from the links provided) have clearly offered up the testimony and devastating emotional terrorism and subsequent abandonment by a province and it’s law enforcement personnel. A travesty from an obviously, gutless government.
I can’t believe that Ontarians have tolerated this for so long but then I’m sure that the PC crowd has been dogging those that speak up to the point of giving up?

Give these people their money, their sanity and perhaps they can still rebuild their lives.

  6. Liz J says:

How can we not blame the people who are doing it? Why would they threaten and terrorize people just because they assume they can get away with it? What sort of people would do such a thing in this country supposedly run by the rule of law for the protection of all people? Would our laws apply if a band of thugs terrorized a native reserve?

The residents of Ipperwash have suffered a similar abandonment for an even longer period. “To serve and protect” only apples to certain people.

And yet so many Canadian politicians and media sources still seem obsessed with alleged Afghan detainee abuse. Incredible.

Torture carried out in my name is wrong regardless of whatever other abuses exist in this country or others. You need to understand that.

  10. MaryT says:

Speaking of so called detainee abuse: Just watched US Congressman Dan Burton on Fox re the navy seals court martial. They supposedly gave a real terrorist a fat lip when they captured him. This guy was resposible for the killing of 4 US troops, torturing them, mutilating them, dragging their bodies thru the streets, burning them and then hanging them from a bridge. I remember those pic on tv. Dan Burton said, the first rule of the taliban or enemy is, if captured yell torture.
And our opposition politicians feel sorry for these guys we captured.

  11. Greg says:

McGuinty did this to all of us. It started to get much worse when he created the Ipperwash inquiry with the sole purpose of trying to put the last nail in the coffin of the Mike Harris government. He failed, but the media sideshow during the inquiry, trying to directly blame Harris for the shooting, emboldened and empowered the native community in general to do what is happening in Caledon, along with highway and railway blockades elsewhere. McGuinty has neutered himself and the rest of us in the face of any native action.

  12. Joanne says:

Torture carried out in my name is wrong regardless of whatever other abuses exist in this country or others.

And who carried out the alleged torture, Mrs. Reynolds? And where is your proof?

  13. C Gardner says:

There is so much to be angry about in this case and many of us want to vent that anger onto the natives, the OPP and the LIberal government under McGuinty. To do so would be self-defeating. The reason I say this is that blame needs to be placed squarely on the shoulders of the one(s) responsible. The more details that come out of this trial (the truth always comes out) the more it becomes apparent that McGuinty is really the one who is ultimately the one who is both morally and legally responsible for the action (or in this case- inaction) of the OPP. The OPP must follow protocol, they go on the orders of their superiors and when nMcGuinty says jump. However, I also believe that as first hand witnesses to what was happening to this family, they had a MORAL responsibilty to do something about it. I don’t care if it was lodging a formal complaint against the government, talking to an ombudsmen, speaking to the Prime Minister even, I don’t care. The fact that they did nothing (not that I have heard anyways,) that not one person stepped forward above and beyond this farce of an order that McGuinty gave to the OPP is the sadest of all.

I also wanted to say that clearly, the native prtoesters were wrong on many accounts, I do not excuse their actions either. But the responsibilty to protect citizens and uphold the law is with the OPP but they can’t do anything if their orders from the top say otherwise, hence I place 95% of the blame on McGuinty. He should be the one on trial along with his advisors and any other staff that was responsible for the decisions made by the government.

Is it possible that climategate will open up the media to start to cover all unreported stories eg this family.
If the media wont the bloggers will.

  15. MaryT says:

What has happened to make us all afraid to do the right thing. Is it fear of being called racist, bigot or some kind of phobic.
Did any neighbors make any calls to officials re this family, or to the media.
Another example is the busdriver in Edmonton who was beaten and dragged off his bus, and continued to be beaten and taken to hospital in serious condition. This, on a city bus at 7.30a.m., with a load of passengers and no one did anything to stop it. Fear of being sued, or what.

  16. Soccermom says:

That is so sad. This is Canada. Stuff like that should not happen here.

  17. Swift says:

For those who have not followed this story go to caledoniawakeupcall.com. There is a huge amount of information there about Caledonia and Ipperwash, plus some more about lesser known problems.

  18. Fay says:

This is all because of the Hug a THug laws brought in with Trudeau and Liberal Party. The MSM then blame the victim and manipulate the news to protect the criminals and bully’s. Example of Chinese grocer in Toronto charged for protecting his property. The Liberals use the media to bully all law abiding Canadians. We need Fox news to shine a light on our Liberal television.

  19. Bruce says:

The CRTC approves of Al Jazeera, but not Fox, go figure.

  20. Bubba Brown says:

I feel very sad to read the storys of the Canadians in Caledonia. Where is the outrage among our opposition or the media ? for the tortured, intimadated? Oh of course they are still stuck on the alleged abuse of Taliban members in Afganistan. Shameful what goes on and the OPP stand and watch. Perhaps this is a problem that should be moved out of provincial juristiction, they obviously are not up to it. It’s not like we do not know how to have order and good government. Where is a Sam Steele? He is needed in Ontairo. We need our troops home to keep order and the rule of law in Ontairo. Thank you Christy Blatchford for once again showing the Lamestream Media what a real reporter looks like.
In other news the Goracle is hiding missin’ chances to spread his gospel of doom, gloom and don’t ask any questions ’cause it’s all lies. I hope the return the oscar movement is real. If there was a movie about this whole charade of glo-bull warming, who would play Al ? my choise would be Orson Wells if he was still with us of course, didn’t he pull off a massive Hoax, the “world is being Invaded by Aliens” or Space Monkeys with coal fired SUV’s.
The coverage of or P.M’s very succesful trip to China seems once again to be foscused on an interpation of a remark that seemed to me to indicate that it had been too long between visits, somehow the Lamestream Media is interpeting this as a “scolding”? for the 5 years that have passed between visits to China HM PM Harper has only been in power for what half of that time? I guess the LSM couldn’t do the missin’ photo-op thing this time. Sorry about the somewhat ramblin’ post lot’s goin on and I like you Joanne am somewhat anxious about this Coppenhagen, I am puttin’ my faith in PM Harper.

  29. Wildrose says:

History shows that there is a price to be paid, when a society fails to uphold law and order. The ordinary, law-abiding citiczen will conclude that there is little justice or protection to be had from the authorities and will make the decisions necessary to ensure their own protection. This has happened in history before and exists in certain parts of the world now. It is predictable, but will not be pretty. Ontario authorities have let the genie out of the bottle here and it will not easily be stuffed back in. Govts need to be careful of what messages they are sending because citizens are not stupid and will arrive at their own conclusions.

    CANADA AS A GLOBAL LEADER
Nations across the world value Canada’s growing role, says new poll
    By Veronica Chail, OMNI News

Many people think that Canada’s positive image and global reputation has been sliding because of its involvement in Afghanistan.

However, the most recent Canada and the World poll reveals the opposite.
Other countries, value Canada’s growing role in international affairs.

The latest poll was conducted by Angus Reid Strategies in partnership with Maclean’s magazine and OMNI Television. It shows that respondents from the U.S. and China say Canada has become a bigger global actor. Compare this to Israel, Turkey, and 48 per cent of Canadian respondents who say Canada is a small country with little influence in foreign affairs.

In addition, more respondents view Canada as a global leader in working for human rights and peace in the world, versus being the puppet of the U.S.
But some respondents do think there’s another connection between Canada and the U.S. “Many people think that we’re actually fighting in Iraq, because we’re linked in people’s minds with the United States. Of course, in fact, we’re not,” says Andrew Grenville, chief research officer of Angus Reid Strategies.

Yet, most respondents, including Americans, pick the U.S. as the single biggest threat to global stability. “Canadians believe that Americans are the biggest threat to global stability. Even, more so, than Al-Qaeda or religious fundamentalism, which is really a surprise,” he says.

However, a combination of Al-Qadea and religious fundamentalism ranked as an even higher threat. Israel sees Iran as the biggest threat.
And Italy and Canada also have concerns about China.

As for leadership, Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper is admired by more American respondents than Canadian respondents.
