Well maybe some hope…

Al Gore has apparently cancelled his Copenhagen lecture (H/T Mary T).

Little by little the fizzle is dissipating from the warmists’ fearmongering surge.

Canadian media is starting to wake up to the realization that they have been scooped big time.

Now if only Jim Prentice would send us a hint that he ‘gets’ it.

Prentice is playing it cool, for now:

    ”Speaking of Climategate, Jim Prentice,
Canada’s environment minister and a participant in the Copenhagen talks next week,
told the press today after Question Period that
“there were some serious allegations of impropriety and some serious questions about the quality of the scientific work that was done”
at the Climatic Research Unit of East Anglia University.
Mr. Prentice, who views the science overall as being “relatively clear,” also sidestepped a question about climate change being a big lie.

Question: You don’t see this – I mean there are people from your province,
from all provinces who see this as the smoking gun that there is some sort
of big lie out there about climate change. You just don’t buy that?

Hon. Jim Prentice: As I said, something quite inappropriate seems to have
happened at this institution, the East Anglia Institution.
    I think we all
want to get to the bottom of that, what that actually was.

Mr. Prentice, who has been criticized by environmental activists for failing to make a firm commitment at Copenhagen, indicated today that Canada’s position at Copenhagen would not change.

  5. I would like our Government to contact our Canadian champion -Ross McKitrick is a Professor of Economics at the University of Guelph where he focuses on environmental economics.

They could ask him to pick 5 experts from Canada to do investigate the model and raw data.

Until we can confirm the raw data and model our Cap & Trade Policy is on hold.

OT, but something must be stressed re the PM in China. He was supposedly scolded that no PM had visited China for 5 years. So, what liberal didn’t visit. We they also being scolded. The PM was elected in 2006. That is not 5 years ago.
Of course scientists at the university of lies (Rush) did the math for the media and somehow decided that SH has been the PM for 5 years.

He claimed that the scientific consensus around climate change “continues to grow from strength to strength”.

The Approved Destination Status alone will be a huge boost to tourism in places like Niagara Falls and Niagara On the Lake where millions of people from around the world are greeted annually.
Let’s just hope that they come during the winter too.

I’m spending a bit of time here in Chemainus on Vancouver Island and while they are pleased with the new status they also complain that when the tour buses with loads of Chinese arrive in their town to view the many wall murals they spend practically no money in the shops.

I’d like to think that maybe our tourism businesses will start offering discounts for winter travel but they’re probably rubbing their hands with glee at the prospect of year-round $300 a night hotel rooms.
Maybe that’s why the tourists don’t spend in Chemainus… too broke after Niagara Falls.

Coal, Oil and LNG. They already invested in the Oil Sands to the tune of about 2 Billion if memory serves me. That raised a few eyebrows in Washington. They may have what we want but we got a lot of what they want too. Maybe the Chinese want Preferred Oilsands Status. :)

  32. C Gardner says:

    Joanne,

As a former intern in the office of Minister Jim Prentice, I can tell you that he is a very diplomatic politician and he chooses his words, very carefully so as not to provide unecessary fodder for the media and/or opposition parties and is an expert at not painting himself or the government into any corders. His response was broad and very safe, not committing one way or the other. Rest assured that no agreement will be signed if it is not in the best interest of the country or if it is not going to be in the best interest of the Conservative government.

  33. Joanne says:

Thank you C Gardner. That is very reassuring.

  34. NeilD says:

It’s my opinion as well that the government is choosing their words carefully. The weight of the entire MSM coalition would come down on them like a ton of bricks if they were to begin disputing Global Warming.

Nevertheless, the ball exposing this wealth transfer scam is beginning to roll faster and faster each and every day. When Rex Murphy does a piece on the CRU e-mails then you know that things are starting to happen.
Maybe just a little peep from our disbelieving government would be in order so that the rest of us ‘deniers’ will feel like we’re not alone.
All they have to do is briefly mention the CRU e-mails and I’ll be perfectly content.

The Harper government won’t buy into the “hype” surrounding the Copenhagen climate summit to rush into a new deal, said Environment Minister Jim Prentice on Friday.

In a lunchtime speech delivered to Montreal business leaders, Mr. Prentice said Canada won’t agree to anything at this month’s international conference just for the sake of saying it is taking action.

“There’s always a lot of hype and drama that gets built into this sort of international event, much of it intended to force the hand of participants,” Mr. Prentice said in the prepared speech. “We aren’t going to buy into that. We are not going to panic. We are confident about the actions we are taking on the domestic and the continental fronts.”

The fact Gore has backed out of his appearance at Copenhagen could be a bigger story than we are currently aware of. He’s one big blow bag who never turned down a chance to spew his doctrine. Perhaps he’s starting to realize his credibility may well be on the line given the latest developments on the climategate file.

  40. jt says:

    My letter to Mr. Prentice:

    Dear Mr. Prentice;

You have been quoted in the media in the last couple of days as stating that:

“It does not change the position of Canada relative to the Copenhagen agreement and the Copenhagen thoughts. The science overall is relatively clear on all of this and as a conservationist and as a responsible environmental steward Canada wants to see carbon emissions reduced.”

I would say sir, that given the contents of the leaked, not “hacked” information (BBC had this file for almost a month before the info was posted on the Russian server) and the nature of that information, the “science is settled” position is not correct. In fact sir, I would venture that the “loss” of the raw data supporting the IPCC’s position on AGW from the HADCRU might be construed as deliberate, since the head of HDCRU has been carrying on for years denying FOI requests for access, while possibly knowing all along that the data was “lost. Is this government going to impose draconian climate mitigation legislation based on this kind of science?

I will not support any government who states that “man” is causing the planet to heat up. You have no proof of that. There is irrefutable evidence that the temperature data has been manipulated to “fit” the climate models on which you are attempting to negotiate a position at COP-15. The evidence appears to suggest that the planet is actually cooling and has been for 10 years. The modelers themselves admit that they can’t “explain” that fact. They refused to release their data for years to outside scrutiny and you claim that doesn’t even compute in your calculations regarding COP-15?

As a Conservative voter, I must inform you that your government’s position on AGW, as it is stated above is a political mistake. I will not support a government who will make taxpayer’s monies available for “climate mitigation” in any way shape or form, based on fraudulent science. I also will not support a government who continues to fund a one-sided, AGW driven public broadcaster with my tax dollars as they have yet to report on the Climategate file in any balanced manner. I will not support a government who will allow various charities to receive tax free status while promoting the fraud that AGW climate change is caused by man, until the promoters show their math, publish their raw data and how they got to their conclusions under the normal process of scientific investigation. I don’t support the “political science” on this issue. Given the revelations of the past week, neither should you.

I will not vote for a government who will place an onerous burden on the taxpayers of this country, without a proper due diligence on this subject and please sir, spare us the condescending prozetylizing, that the “science is settled”. It is clearly not, as it has been “massaged”, manipulated and cooked to fit the climate modeler’s pre-ordained conclusions. They then corrupted the “peer review” process to make sure that “their” science stood up to scrutiny and their detractors were shut out of the discussion.

Maybe in your mind personally the science is settled, but not in mine nor in the minds of “informed” Canadians.

You certainly do not speak for me at Copenhagen.

    xxxx
