It’s a wonderful scam

One of the advantages of having a Macleans subscription is getting a jump-start on any Mark Steyn articles before they hit the Internet.

In the December 7th issue, Steyn has a terrific column on Warmergate entitled, The ‘science’ of global warming.

The best line in my opinion is his reaction to the following ad depicting polar bears dropping from the skies, which Steyn says “evokes grotesquely those poor souls who chose to jump from the Twin Towers and die in one last gulp of air rather than perish in the fireball within…”

Steyn quips:

Why are they plummeting to their deaths from the heavens? As the ad explains, “An average European flight produces over 400 kg of greenhouse gases for every passenger. That’s the weight of an adult polar bear.”

Oooookay. It’s A Warmerful Life: every time they call your flight, a poley bear loses its wings.

Update:

More classic Steyn (H/T – Irons in the Fire):

The trouble with outsourcing your marbles to the peer-reviewed set is that, if you take away one single thing from the leaked documents, it’s that the global warm-mongers have wholly corrupted the “peer-review” process. When it comes to promoting the impending ecopalypse, the Climate Research Unit is the nerve-center of the operation.

The “science” of the CRU dominates the “science” behind the UN IPCC, which dominates the “science” behind the Congressional cap-&-trade boondoggle, the upcoming Copenhagen shakindownen of the developed world, and the now routine phenomenon of leaders of advanced, prosperous societies talking like gibbering madmen escaped from the padded cell, whether it’s President Obama promising to end the rise of the oceans or the Prince of Wales saying we only have 96 months left to save the planet. But don’t worry, it’s all “peer-reviewed”

Climategate: Follow the Money – Bret Stephens, WSJ:

Today these groups form a kind of ecosystem of their own. They include not just old standbys like the Sierra Club or Greenpeace, but also Ozone Action, Clean Air Cool Planet, Americans for Equitable Climate Change Solutions, the Alternative Energy Resources Association, the California Climate Action Registry and so on and on. All of them have been on the receiving end of climate change-related funding, so all of them must believe in the reality (and catastrophic imminence) of global warming just as a priest must believe in the existence of God.

None of these outfits are per se corrupt, in the sense that the monies they get are spent on something other than their intended purposes. But they depend on an inherently corrupting premise, namely that the hypothesis on which their livelihood depends has in fact been proved. Absent that proof, everything they represent—including the thousands of jobs they provide—vanishes. This is what’s known as a vested interest, and vested interests are an enemy of sound science…

‘Climate gate’ scientist to temporarily step down – CNews:

“It has created confusion and confusion never helps scientific discussions,” Stern told reporters in London Tuesday. “The degree of skepticism among real scientists is very small.”

Governments are in the final days of preparations for Copenhagen conference, which is due to outline a new climate change agreement. Stern said the stakes were very high, explaining that if countries did not manage to reach agreement, world temperatures could rise by five degrees Celsius (nine degrees Fahrenheit) by the end of the century, making much of the world uninhabitable.

“We have a moment now when we could get a strategy agreed,” Stern said. “If it were to dissolve in disarray it would not be easy to put this momentum back together again.”

Good grief! Is this guy for real?

  2. The CPC are coordinating with the US a benchmark not from the 1990′s but from 2006+ making the goal less expensive option for everyone.(20%?)

If the Green/UN fascists can’t get onboard squeeze/extort Billions with the smaller attainable goal, the developed world have already laid out their default position. Plan ‘B’ to mitigate the fallout and negative press is already in place?

I can’t imagine the developed world (governments ceding control)for future economic expansion through trading Carbon “credits” shell game controlled by large companies, carbon stock market manipulation.

The Econuts are not going to vote for the CPC ever, the ballot question does not rank high and can be positioned as unrealistic cost.

The TD-Liberal research paper was too low. The finances must be in worse shape at the LPOC if they can’t afford to do any polling/research. They are given three million, has it been spent paying for rent, saving their furniture from collections?

Attacking the religion of AGW directly may be too big for the Canadians government-CPC against the Global Press Industry, numerous governments that have also heavily invested in the latest ponzi scheme.

How many public inquiries from how many countries can be launched? Internal one from the universities may not dig deep enough.

    (from “Pravda,” 3 January, 1936; page 1).

“COULD WE EVER HAVE DREAMED OF SUCH A GREAT HONOR?”
Letter from Academician T. D. Lysenko’s Parents to Comrade Stalin

Our beloved, dear Stalin! The day we learned that our Trofim was awarded the Order of Lenin was the most joyous day of our lives. How could we ever have dreamed of such a great honor, we, poor peasants from the village of Karlovka in Kharkov province?

It was hard for our son Trofim to get an education before the Revolution. He was not admitted — a peasant boy, a muzhik’s son — into the agronomy school, even though he received only the highest grades in school. Trofim had to become a gardener in Poltava. He would have remained a gardener for life had it not been for the Soviet regime. Not only the older Trofim, but his younger [brothers and sister] went to study at institutes…. The high road to knowledge was opened up to the muzik’s son…. Is there any other country in the world where the son of a poor peasant could become an academician? No!…

We do not know how to show you our gratitude, dear Comrade Stalin, for this great happiness, the conferring of the highest award upon our eldest son. I, Denis Lysenko, have worked hard during my 64 years; nevertheless I am not quitting working on my own Bolshevist Labor kolkhoz, for work is enjoyable now, for life has become better and more cheerful. I work on the kolkhoz as an experimenter, gardener, beekeeper, and horticulturist. After studying courses in plant breeding here, from my son, I taught four collective farmers to cross plants. I myself crossed 13 plants and conducted experiments in vernalization of beets, as a result of which I get double the harvests. Recently I thought up a special machine for applying liquid fertilizer to beets and commissioned the kolkhoz blacksmith to make it. It is by these works, to the extent of my powers as an old man, that I show my gratitude to you, Comrade Stalin, and the Communist Party and Soviet system that you direct.

    With kolkhoz greetings!

I fervently hope that Copenhagen will avoid canonising the absurd notion that climate is determined by any single parameter like CO2. The dubious attempts to link this parameter to every form of catastrophe is producing unwarranted fear. Imposing this notion as a matter of international law will set science back several centuries. The accompanying policies seem designed to do the same for society as a whole. The carbon control movement, like every malicious movement, seeks to cloak itself in an aura of virtue. Sentient citizens should be able to see through this patent ploy.

My best hope is that developed countries agree on commitments to reduce emissions by 2020 more or less in keeping with the stated position of the European Union. I also hope that there will be a commitment to fund mitigation and adaptation measures in some of the poorest countries, as well as some arrangement for facilitating access to technology. My expectation is that if these measures are committed to by the developed world at a reasonably early stage, several developing countries will put forward their own national action plans.

My biggest fear is that we get a weak agreement which does not represent any commitment to action. If that happened there would be a great deal of finger-pointing, and gloating on the part of the vested interests who would like to defeat any effort to get a meaningful agreement. I believe such a scenario would represent a major setback.

“Document Reveals U.N.’s Goal of Becoming Rule-Maker in Global Environmental Talks

Environmentalism should be regarded on the same level with religion “as the only compelling, value-based narrative available to humanity,” according to a paper written two years ago to influence the future strategy of the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP), the world’s would-be environmental watchdog.

The purpose of the paper, put together after an unpublicized day-long session in Switzerland by some of the world’s top environmental bureaucrats: to argue for a new and unprecedented effort to move environmental concerns to “the center of political and economic decision-making” around the world — and perhaps not coincidentally, expand the influence and reach of UNEP at the tables of world power, as a rule-maker and potential supervisor of the New Environmental Order.

The positions argued in that paper now appear to be much closer at hand; many of them are embedded in a four-year strategy document for UNEP taking effect next year, in the immediate wake of the much-touted, 11-day Copenhagen conference on “climate change,” which starts on Dec. 7, and which is intended to push environmental concerns to a new crescendo.

The major difference is that the four-year UNEP plan expresses its aims in the carefully soporific language that U.N. organizations customarily use to swaddle their objectives. The Swiss document makes its case passionately — and more important, plainly — than any U.N. official document ever would.

The ambitious paper, entitled “The UNEP That We Want,” was the product of a select group of 20 top environmental bureaucrats and thinkers, including UNEP’s current No. 2 official, Angela Cropper. The document was later delivered to UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner.

Other participants included Janos Pasztor, currently head of the team pushing U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s unprecedented Seal the Deal lobbying campaign to pressure U.N. member governments into signing a new environmental agreement at Copenhagen; Julia Marton-Lefevre, head of the World Conservation Union; Dominic Waughray, currently head of environmental initiatives at the World Economic Forum; and Maria Ivanova, a Bulgarian academic who is director of the Global Economic Governance Project at the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy.

Another important attendee was John Scanlon, listed on UNEP’s website as principal advisor to UNEP’s Steiner. Among other things, Scanlon is credited in his UNEP biography with being the leader in developing UNEP’s new medium-term strategy, “Environment for Development,” covering the period from 2010 to 2013. The draft version of the strategy was presented to a UNEP’s Governing Council and a meeting of the world’s environmental minister’s in February 2008, and subsequently approved.

The Swiss paper was written not by Scanlon but by Mark Halle, the Europe-based director of trade and investment for an influential environmental think-tank, the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), which originated in Canada and now operates in some 30 countries. IISD, which still has heavy Canadian government support, bills itself as a research institute promoting policies that are “simultaneously beneficial to the global economy, the global environment and to social well-being.”

Even though all of the Swiss participants took part in the brainstorming, the responsibility for the ideas in the paper are his own, Halle emphasized to Fox News, after he was contacted last week about the document. The paper itself says it offers “elements,” not a “complete offering,” of what UNEP should consider for its role in the years ahead.

Despite those limitations, the report was “very well received” by UNEP’s hierarchy, according to Halle, and “it has had a great impact internally.” He added, “I have participated in several discussions and presentations of the ideas.”

“Global Warming E-Mails Scandal Show Scientists May Have Cooked the Facts

By Peter Roff, Thomas Jefferson Street blog

It is starting to look like President Barack Obama, aided and abetted by former Vice President Al Gore, Sens. Barbara Boxer, and John F. Kerry and others, may have lied this nation into a war against man-made global warming.

Preliminary analysis of the contents of thousands of E-mails and documents taken from the computer archives of the Climate Research Unit at England’s University of East Anglia—possibly by a hacker, possibly by a whistleblower—indicate a number of the world’s most important scientists engaged in research designed to prove that global warming really does exist may have been cooking the books.

As columnist Michael Barone wrote in Sunday’s Washington Examiner, “The CRU has been a major source of data on global temperatures, relied on by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. But the e-mails suggest that CRU scientists have been suppressing and misstating data and working to prevent the publication of conflicting views in peer-reviewed science periodicals.”

If true, the cooking of the temperature data to provide support for the idea that man-made global warming is occurring is a scandal of most serious proportions. It should force policymakers to reconsider the role science plays in the formulation of policy if its conclusions can be manipulated the way those concerning climate change now appear to have been.

Some of those involved in the E-mail chains that are now under examination have concocted what on their face come across as bizarre explanations for some of the things they said, many of which boil down to the notion that the words they used did not mean what they mean. It sort of takes us back to what the meaning of “is” is.

Sounds like they are taking notes from Canada on that, did not the LIEberals do the same to DeYawn?

We should not be hard on DeYawn; after all he did not believe in Global Warming, the carbon footprint went up 30% under his watch. Did he know from the beginning that it was false? I think it was about two months after the Cons came to power that the LIEberals demanded something be done because Biffy’s comment, “You didn’t get it done” and they were on this ever since they lost power.

Now the Cons are, on behalf of your tax dollars, giving billions to a fund to “Help” the islanders whose islands are sinking. Just consider this a small amount considering that Canada will follow the USA on Cap & Trade. So far in Canada not one politician of any political party has said Global Warming is fake science.

I’ve been thinking about the idea that the islands are soon going to be under water – therefore the need of 10 billion dollars. I suggest, if you are curious, a study about the ocean tide situation, you can read a paper on it at: http://www.john-daly.com/deadisle/index.htm#appendix

Note paragraph at the beginning states: “This suggests a sea level rise since 1888 of only 2½cm, not 13cm as claimed by the study. This small rise of 2½ cm is fully consistent with a survey of long-term tide gauges [15] around the Australian coast carried out recently by the National Tidal Facility in Adelaide, which found a sea level rise rate of only 0.3 mm/yr, equivalent to a sea level rise of 3cm over a century. Even the current sea level in the inner cove (Mason Cove) of Port Arthur itself is lower than that indicated by a tide gauge [6] which the study claims existed there in the early 1840s.”

For 0.3 mm/year Harper said Canada will contribute towards the 10 Billion relief. Personally I hope it comes out of the Foreign Affairs funds that help in flooding and disaster relief. They can get the first Billion from Constantly Bashing Conservatives Corp (CBC) – who are completely quiet on this matter..

Too bad this government is terrified of environMENTALists. They do not consider the facts and worst of all they do not listen to the voters. As stated above in comments, there is no political party that states that Global Warming is fake. My understanding is that the Leader of the new Wild Rose Party in Alberta believes in Global Warming.

Good on the Australians, they will at least look at the data and not sign away their country as Harper is about to do. His past remarks do not mean a thing, he has done a fairly good job with a few broken promises, but nothing like this refusal to stand up for Canada because of his fear of the EnvironMENTALists like Dr. Fruit fly.

Fact is, peer reviewed science is what’s going to be dumped on here and at the end of the day that amounts to pseudo-science, ERGO THE BIGGEST SCAM of the 21st century.

Munk debates on today which Dr. Roy will have out and Suzuki’s putting up what may be viewed as a ‘fall guy’ debater.

See CBC’s online article re the Munk debates as it’s latching onto the entrenched bias of AGW promotion, despite the deniers that have the emails reporting on the dumping of stats that prove the science has been manipulated for the convenience of the Copenhagan conference.

Thanks to poster, jt reporting on Australia’s dissent with mps committed to peer reviewed documentation and the exposure its due.

I think the shenanigans in the UK should be investigated also. It is bad for science to just let this stay under the rug. Good science requires adequate challenge, and rigged peer-review doesn’t count.
I think the most important thing that should happen is the temperature data (all of it) should all be made available for the public record.

When the human genome was decoded it was made public, there is no reason temperature data can’t be. The intent was simple, so it could be a public resource for all to mine and use to advance knowledge.

I have a post up about alarmists using determinism as moral justification for dramatic mitigating action, as well as the false conclusions from deterministic modeling. It undermines our adaptability, and skews the moral imperatives.

Dr. Jones of the CRU joins Dr. Salinger, a former CRU colleague, of New Zealands NIWI on the sidelines and still nary a peep from the AGW hysteria complicit Canadian MSM.

    “64. Voltimand:

As in the case of the Unabomber and his “manifesto,” so here: at bottom, the “eco-crime” is the existence of human beings exploiting non-human nature.

I’m wondering how long it’s going to take people to recognize that Ted Kacinski is the patron saint of what is happening now on the “green” front: human beings are evil because their existence disturbs the tranquil balances of the the “natural” (read: non-human) world. Human beings who employ (read: exploit) the resources of the natural world commit eco-crimes. And we all know what should be done with criminals who kill.

The only thing I would require in implementing the obvious program which these “eco-crimes” mongers are peddling is that when the guillotine begins to fall, these scientists be the first to mount the scaffold.

From where I sit, the real issue here is not the environment at all–that is a massive con. The real issue is human hatred of human beings.

We need to “cut to the chase” and get rid of of the whole enviro-scam–it is merely a bait-and-switch diversion. Environmentalists don’t want a living natural world. What they want are dead human beings.

Sounds unlikely and exaggerated? Re-read Wretchard’s essay one more time.”
