Will the NDP continue to make gains on the HST issue at the expense of the Conservative Government, the Federal Liberals and the McGuinty Liberals?
The latest Ipsos poll shows the surprising numbers.
Could it be that Canadians really don’t want any more taxes?
Especially in Ontario?

The Tories can afford a loss of support to the NDP more than the Liberals can.
I’m a Canadian and I think that I can safely say that I speak for my family, friends, neighbours(especially the guy living behind me) and many co-workers when I say that I don’t want to have to pay more taxes.
Also, all of the cashiers at Timmies, the supermarket, the gas station, my local bar(s), my favourite take-out pizza place, Harvey’s (even teens don’t like taxes), too many dollar stores to remember and our local convienence store. All dislike paying taxes and each and every one is a Canadian and (except for Harvey’s) of voting age.
And I live in Ontario.
The Tories can afford a loss of support to the NDP more than the Liberals can.
I agree. I am not worried.
What Dalton should be doing is lowering the provincial portion of the tax. That would help make the pill easier to swallow. Of course the McGuinty Government is so addicted to taxes and paying off unions and protesters that it will never happen.
The grit number is 24% that is amazingly low and agrees with the Angus Reid poll at 23%. Grits are doing a limbo to the ground.
I see some good vote splitting opportunities if the NDP pick up grit support.
The poll was taken Nov 17-19,
so the 2 point dip for the Cons could very easily be the Afghan detainee issue, rather than the HST (or both?).
And same for the Dipper climb, as Libs are just as Afghan mission sensitive as Cons.
Ontario:
Cons down 2, Libs down 3, and Greens down a whopping 6 points almost cut in half!
Dippers up 8 points.
Undecideds?
There you have it, straight from his mush, another truth ad by the flip-flopping absent minded Nutty Professor.
Who in their right mind would want more taxes? We’re already being taxed out of our homes.
Not to forget “smart meters” and water meters, sky high Hydro rates, property taxes etc, etc…
I see some good vote splitting opportunities if the NDP pick up grit support.
Exactly, Dr. Roy. Good news for the CPC.
I voted NDP once or twice when I lived in Alberta. I couldn’t today though.
Maybe even yesterday I might have considered them but after reading this article I have to say no.
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/layton-betrays-the-faithful/article1372134/
Part of the support base the NDP seems to kowtow to is what I like to call the snivelling city slicker. Hard to say but an apt description.
Gerald Caplan, former NDP National Canpaign Director, the writer of the above link, even acknowledges that the vote on the Long Gun Registry Private Member’s Bill won by “a comfortable 164 to 137 votes.” yet he rails on about Conservatives playing to their base.
Perhaps they are but that base just happens to be a tad broader than the NDP’s base largely because of the snivelling city slicker and because of that broader base we elect more MP’s and sometimes get to enact laws and set standards.
The Dippers, on the other hand, get to sit in a fifteenth floor Toronto condo and complain about the Island airport or whatever other cause is at hand.
Caplan gives us a heads-up of what’s in store as the long gun registry bill winds through Parliament when he writes: “Many of those who passionately supported gun control are activists; they believe in political action.”
“Those who shout loudest get the most” is their motto and most of the time they’re right.
Obviously, I’m not an Ontarian or British Columbian but doesn’t anyone else find it rather suspicious that a) the NDP are the recipients of this tax spin and b)the feds would be soaking up the heat when in fact, this type of tax initiative does not occur overnight.
The Provincial governments, in both provinces have been navigating the pros and cons for quite some time without voters input.
For gawd sake, BC just had an election and Ontario, not so long before that.
Why is it that the provinces that have done it, have their voters supporting their HST and yet these 2 do not and further, are passing the blame to the federal govt?
Having the masses be sucked in by the NDP???, defies logic.
Tax and NDP, is synonymous.
Dippers are already laying out their fed election platform.
Once again, damn the tax cuts to business (tho they tossed that out, in favor of seats in a coalition cabinet).
Libs vs Dippers should be very interesting.
Which one will do an Obama, and tax the rich?
Actually the funny part on the HST is the fact that it is a purely provincial matter. If Ontario or British Columbia want to harmonize the two sales taxes then they can harmonize. If Saskatchewan wants to keep the PST/GST going then Saskatchewan will keep the PST/GST. The Federal government really has no say in the matter. The Conservatives can not change the rules now because the Progressive Conservative/Liberals set the policy which Eastern Canada has already accepted.
That’s unpossible! The people of Ontario enjoy paying some of the highest taxes in the world – and they want to pay more.
Just ask’em, it seems that every ‘man in the street’ interview they put on TV has someone agreeing to pay more tax for any one or all of our sacred cows.
McGuinty knows this, his ‘health tax’ has funded plenty of Liberal corruption and payoffs to preferred groups, now he needs more and those preferred groups are going to help him get it. Ontario voters are dumb and deserve this.
Actually the funny part on the HST is the fact that it is a purely provincial matter.
Joe, exactly! That’s why that second video I have posted of Iffy saying that it should be the same right across the country is astonishing! Does he have no idea how provincial and federal concerns are divided up in this country? This isn’t the U.S. I think he forgets that.
I fear you’re right, Philanthropist @ 10:38 pm, Ontario voters are dumb, at least the majority must be, they delivered two majorities to the lying, high taxing McGuinty Liberals.Hell we must be the highest taxed people on the planet now.
With the media we have, we really can’t trust any “man in the street” interviews either.
If enough people don’t wake up to the fact we’re being taxed out of our cabins already we may see more people living on the streets for them to interview.

Joanne, you are right that the HST for Ontario and BC should both have the provincial sales tax portions lowered to 5% to be fair to consumers, but with both provinces having Liberal governments I wouldn’t hold my breath.
On another note here’s an interesting connection via the Carr Institute where Iggy was once employed might go back to, Richard Colvin of baseless torture allegation notoriety and his friend Michael Semple formerly of the EU mission to Afghanistan;
Michael Semple, former deputy head of the European Union’s mission in Afghanistan when Colvin was second-in-command of the Canadian embassy, said his own records from his time in Kabul are littered with the same findings that the senior Canadian envoy shared with a House of Commons committee this week.
Colvin, now a top intelligence officer at the embassy in Washington, expressed concerns that were “absolutely credible,” said Semple, now a research fellow at Harvard University’s Carr Center for Human Rights.

Fh, I totally agree. That’s exactly why I haven’t put up a post on this yet. There are too many unanswered questions and no way to really ascertain the facts at this time.
However, I don’t mind readers discussing it. It’s just that to me the detainee issue is being overblown as a way to tarnish the Government and possibly our involvement in Afghanistan, which is exactly what the Taliban want.
For once Michael Ignatieff is doing the right thing by keeping a low profile on this one.
Layton wants to raise taxes on big businesses like the oil sands that creates jobs, he wants the banks to give money; Layton wants to secure his unions friends-daily strikes will be on the forefront and Layton who claims to love the little guy will now have to pay more to the unions.
No doubt he will raise taxes on the big companies to the point they will leave the country maybe to china.
Protectionism will be in full gear-forcing canadians to buy very expensive stuff.
The little guy Layton so call care have to pay for ‘drug addicts to maintain their ‘high’
Layton, like Putin like Chavez are friends of the UNION. And they all treat the little guy will tricker treat but no treats at all;it is just a fantasy that even the venezuelan poor are smelling the stench of Chavez wealth and not theirs.
I agree Joanne let it play out

If anyone needs proof to the detainee story is nothing but partisan crap from the opposition parties it’s this.
The Dutch, U.S., British, Australian, and I believe the German governments have handed over prisoners as well. Yet not one person in the opposition parties nor msm references those countries as complicit in torture.
And Colvin himself says he only saw fit to warn of detainee abuse from prisoners turned over by Canadian forces.
p.s. Bruce’s reference @8:38 to links between Semple, Colvin, Iffy and the Carr institute is something the msm should be running with. I won’t hold my breath.
Methinks there must be far too many people in Ontario NOT paying taxes — on the welfare rolls and living off the poor-beleaguered taxpayers of this province — otherwise why do so many Ontarians vote for the tax and stash McGuinty Liberal$?
A caution and FYI about Smart Metres, other than just more government control of the citizenry: When we lived in Southwestern Ontario, we had, unasked, a Smart Metre installed outside our house. Then, we wondered why we were getting so much static on our portable speakers.
‘Turns out that the Smart Metres were on the same frequency bandwidth as our speakers, so our listening enjoyment on our patio, in our den, in the bathroom, was completely trashed. We got in touch with Hydro, they suggested new speakers with another frequency (at OUR expense, of course) and that didn’t work.
As it turns out, Hydro had applied for and been given permission (by whom, I’m not sure; the provincial government probably) to use the most common frequency for their Smart Metres.
I wonder what else these Smart Metres interfere with? Fortunately, we moved a while later and so far, haven’t been saddled with a Smart Metre.
Michael Semple is not quite the impartial observer the Star would have you believe. He is an Irish diplomat, formerly employed by the European Union, who was expelled from Afghanistan for holding secret peace talks with the Taliban with neither the knowledge nor the consent of the Karzai government. So I guess he would be up for anything that made the Afghans look bad.
He currently holds a fellowship with the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard’s Kennedy School as others have noted, and he and his family live in Pakistan.
Lots of links to him on Google, but here and here are a couple.
What really bothers me about this is what Mr. Colvin’s motives are. Fine, he raised the issue back in 2006 and 2007 (maybe), but the problem was dealt with in mid-2007, and to the best of my knowledge there have been no further questions asked. The average person would say, “OK, the matter is settled.” he’s even moved on to a different posting, so why exactly does he want to put everyone through this again ? And if he feels so strongly that Canada has committed war crimes, how can he possibly still work for us ?
There’s a parallel between the HST and Coalition kerfuffles. In both cases:
1. There had just been an election (BC provincial and federal in 2008)
2. During the campaigns, the relevant issue was not mentioned by the offending side at all (Campbell re the HST in BC and the 3 stooges re the Coalition)
3. Shortly after the election, voters saw both relevant issues rear their ugly heads. And they rightly wondered: “Where the heck did THAT come from ?”
4. There was a very strong emotional reaction from the voters who felt anger, betrayal, even fear (in the case of the coalition)
5. The opposition (Layton and the BC Dippers; Harper re the coalition) is going to try and take maximum advantage of those emotions.
6. It won’t do any good for the offending parties (Campbell/Harper re the HST; the 3 stooges re the coalition) to use logical counter-arguments. The voters are mad as hell. They will go more ballistic if they are lectured to (for example, on how the HST simplifies accounting procedures for small business, or on the theoretical aspects of how our parliamentary system works, once all MPs are in the House). It’s a huge mistake to condescend (“you’re too dumb to understand this issue”) to angry voters.
So Layton is going to play off that anger in BC and try to milk it for all it’s worth. It makes total sense. But that anger will disipate over time, and BC voters will get used to the HST once it’s been in place for a while (like they’re kind of used to the carbon tax). So the best counter-strategy for Harper is to delay the federal election as long as possible.
Michael Campbell on his Money Talks Show slamming the media being over the top most of the time. Real good. He’s on the Corus network.

“Hacked files of the Climatic Research Unit, Global Warming a deliberate fraud
The Death Blow to Climate Science
Global Warming is often called a hoax. I disagree because a hoax has a humorous intent to puncture pomposity. In science, such as with the Piltdown Man hoax, it was done to expose those with fervent but blind belief. The argument that global warming is due to humans, known as the anthropogenic global warming theory (AGW) is a deliberate fraud. I can now make that statement without fear of contradiction because of a remarkable hacking of files that provided not just a smoking gun, but an entire battery of machine guns.
Climate science hijacked and corrupted by this small group of scientists
Dominant names involved are ones I have followed throughout my career including, Phil Jones, Benjamin Santer, Michael Mann, Kevin Trenberth, Jonathan Overpeck, Ken Briffa and Tom Wigley. I have watched climate science hijacked and corrupted by this small group of scientists. This small, elite, community was named by Professor Wegman in his report to the National Academy of Science (NAS).
I had the pleasure of meeting the founder of CRU Professor Hubert Lamb, considered the Father of Modern Climatology, on a couple of occasions. He also peer reviewed one of my early publications. I know he would be mortified with what was disclosed in the last couple of days.
Jones claims the files were obtained illegally as if that absolves the content. It doesn’t and it is enough to destroy all their careers. Jones gave a foretaste of his behavior in 2005. Warwick Hughes asked for the data and method he used for his claim of a 0.6°C temperature rise since the end of the nineteenth century. Jones responded, “We have 25 years or so invested in the work. Why should I make the data available to you when your aim is to try and find something wrong with it?” He has stonewalled ever since. The main reason was because it was used as a key argument in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Reports to convince the world humans caused rapid warming in the 20th century. The emails obtained are a frightening record of arrogance, and deception far beyond his 2005 effort.
Another glimpse into what the files and emails reveal was the report by Professor Deming. He wrote, …” (more)

http://joannenova.com.au/globalwarming/skeptics-handbook-ii/the_skeptics_handbook_II-sml.pdf
You guys in Ontario could use this. Educate your MLA and your MP and the folks at TO City Hall. Heck, ask TD Bank how much they think they’ll make in the Carbon Market?
The Liberals signed us on to Kyoto and what that entails and this little PDF file will fill you in on what they have signed you up for. If you like it and think you’ll get something out of it: vote Liberal. If not, well even the Conservatives don’t appear to be your friends lately, either. Vote republican, then.
Actually, maybe this is “on topic” since it is about taxes. Funny your government is all wrapped up in HST salesmanship, but the mother of all taxes is still to be implimented. Carbon taxes. Smoke-screen? (pun!) Both of these governments stand to benefit from carbon taxes and until the Cons state otherwise, I don’t trust them at all, either. In light of the revelations of the HadleyCRU “hack” or “whistleblowing”, depending on your POV, the silence is deafening from our political lords and masters. I’ve already emailed my MP Mr Harper with my thoughts on any sort of “climate mitgation” that costs me money. I urge you all to do the same.
I’d say it’s time to play our national game “hockey”, with the hockey-stick fraud crowd and their boosters in government.
“Actually the funny part on the HST is the fact that it is a purely provincial matter. If Ontario or British Columbia want to harmonize the two sales taxes then they can harmonize. The Conservatives can not change the rules now because the Progressive Conservative/Liberals set the policy which Eastern Canada has already accepted.”
Actually, the feds are offsetting those HST conversions with cash from federal coffers, so from my POV in the ROC, that IS “taxation without representation”. I don’t get to vote in BC or Ontario, or anywhere else and since we don’t have PST (yet) in Alberta, this issue won’t raise it’s ugly issue here anytime soon, but my taxes are the “sugar” making the medicine go down. Cheers, enjoy!

“Dion’s wife goes rogue?
A scathing message attacking Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff appeared today on the Facebook site belonging to Janine Krieber – the wife of Mr. Ignatieff’s predecessor, Stéphane Dion.
The message, a copy of which was obtained by The Globe, says the party “is falling apart, and will not recover.” It also blames “the Toronto elites” for being out of tune, arrogant and unrealistic.
Mr. Ignatieff’s leadership is openly questioned, as is his decision to shun the coalition deal struck by Mr. Dion, NDP Leader Jack Layton and Bloc Leader Gilles Duceppe.
“The time for choices is now,” the message says.”

Facebook post speaks volumes about the state of the party (and has now, reportedly been deleted.) With thanks/credit to the Globe, here’s the translation of the now-erased entry.
It’s been a year and one week since I last wrote on my blog. Ah! “la présidente” is lazy. But we have to take action now.
The Liberal Party is falling apart, and will not recover. Like all liberal parties in Europe, it will become a weakling at the mercy of ephemeral coalitions. By refusing the historic coalition that would have placed it at the helm of the left, it will be punished by history.
Anyway, I became convinced of it the moment that Paul Martin treated Jean Chrétien so cavalierly. The party died at that moment. If the Toronto elites had been more in tune, humble and realist, Stéphane would have been willing to take all the time and absord all the hits needed to rebuild the party. But they couldn’t swallow the 26%, and now we are at 23%.
The time for choices is now. I don’t want to see the Conservatives continue to change my country. They are, slowly, like any dictatorship, changing the world. Torture doesn’t exist, corruption is a fabrication. Do we really have the right leader to discuss these questions? Can someone really write these insanities and lead us to believe that he simply changed his mind? In order to justify violence, he must have engaged in serious thought. Otherwise, it’s very dangerous. How can we be sure that he won’t change his mind one more time?
The party grassroots had understood all of that, and the average citizen is starting to understand it too. Ignatieff’s supporters have not done their homework. They did not read his books, consult his colleagues. They were satisfied that he could be charming at cocktails. Some of them are outraged now. I am hearing: Why did no one say it? We told you loud and clear, you didn’t listen.
I am starting a serious reflection. I will not give my voice to a party that will end up in the trashcan of history. I am looking around me, and certain things are attractive. Like a dedicated party that doesn’t challenge its leader at every hiccup in the polls. A party where the rule would be the principle of pleasure, and not assassination. A party where work ethic and competence would be respected and where smiles would be real.
Maybe I’m not dreaming.

“Pent-up, but also current Liberal bitterness
The Globe and Mail has unearthed and translated a devastating Facebook post by Janine Krieber, Stephane Dion’s wife. Krieber has not been seen much since Dion stepped down a year ago; she did not show up at the tribute to Dion at the Liberals’ convention in May (which was a bit surreal.) Conversation at a Lieberal forum;
Is an investigation on prisoners something the Toronto party really wants? Up till now, this is the exact same policy that Martin was using.
As I advocated, under Rae’s management, we want an inquiry and, to quote Rae, “let the chips fall where they may”.
Because Rae’s a Chretienite and they all want to pay back Martin for calling the Gomery Inquiry into the Sponsorship Program. Duh…..
Why don’t they just out Martin on the $162 Million Dollars that his CSL received while he was Finance Minister? What did CSL actually do to deserve that?
Under Rae’s management, to hell with Iggy, right?
Right……………..
Well, the Liberals haven’t learned a damned thing from the Chretien-Martin feud which divided the Liberals resulting in the near death/impending death of the LPC. Chretien made sure their main source of funding was killed as well, effectively making them start from the bottom, troll for funds from the little people instead of the easy route from the big guys.
Listening to Goldhawk on CPAC this evening, most callers were against having an inquiry into Afghan prisoner abuse. It shouldn’t be political at all but for the desperate Liberals everything but the time of day is political. They’re willing to make the country look bad around the world if they think they can GET something on the Conservative government.
Only an election will sort them out but we can be sure they won’t trigger one any time soon.
It is not just the Liberals. It is the MSM and National Press Gallery that are driving and sensationalizing this Afghan Detainee story. CBC national tonight starts with bombshell from general Natynshyn and then quickly moves to Gar Pardy. Over the top stuff just like the HINI vaccine hysteria.
If the Liberal party says jump the MSM and National Press Gallery say how high!!!
On the latest pathetic effort to get attention by the loopy left/Liberal cabal, the Taliban prisoner file is their cause du jour, Gar Pardy, whoever he is, seems to be the media’s favourite spokesperson on the subject, he’s singing their tune.
