Even the skeptics are being sucked in

Reader Maz2 rarely misses a trick. In today’s National Post editorial (that supposedly applauds Environment Minister Jim Prentice’s promise not to put our country’s economy at risk,) Maz2 exposes the subtle wording of the introduction which seems to imply tacit acceptance of the notion of AGW:

The Earth is warming, and human activity is likely to blame. Climates are changing across the world, including in Canada’s far north. In other parts of the world, some crops will fail, some species will be pressed to extinction and some low-lying territories will be flooded.

But this parade of horribles cannot be used to justify any form or remedial action. Many of the proposals put forth by environmentalists would do little to stop global warming, and would simply act as transfer-payment schemes from rich countries to poor ones…

Maz2 notes:

“*The Earth is warming,”.

AGW is the Religion of the State proclaimed by the National Post/MSM.

Give us the “Proof”, National Post.

“The Earth (notice the capital “E” on earth) is warming”.

Where is the proof, National Post? If God is dead, prove to us that “The Earth is warming”.

Is Gaia a jealous goddess? Are you, National Post, Gaia’s Evangelist?

Yes indeed. Where is the proof, National Post?

Meanwhile, kudos to Jim Prentice for showing a spine:

…Canada will not sign any deal that doesn’t force India, China and Brazil to meet negotiated targets for their own greenhouse gas reductions — a demand that may well be rejected by those countries.

“These countries are responsible for 97 per cent of the growth in emissions,” he says. “Canadians don’t want us to sign on to something that obliges us to reduce emissions, but doesn’t impose obligations on principle emitters.”

My hope is that our Conservative government will continue to show leadership on this issue. This is a good start.

Václav Klaus is the role model.

…We are also taking a collaborative approach with cap and trade: We will build a system in Canada that can be treated as equivalent to the system that will eventually be adopted in the United States. This does not mean we are waiting for the Americans to act — far from it. It means that we are ensuring we create a system that does not inadvertently impose trade barriers.

Over the past months, I’ve met with every provincial and territorial leader to build consensus for a national position on climate change. We are looking for common ground on issues that, after all, often affect provincial and territorial jurisdiction. And there is indeed a consensus on at least one key issue: Each of the premiers and territorial leaders agrees we need to harmonize Canadian regulations — especially cap and trade — with the United States…

Yes, kudos to Prentice for showing common sense on this issue where common sense isn’t at all common, it’s trumped by the money. Our PM has said all along there’s no point in signing on to a deal unless the main polluters are on board too. We are not the problem, if indeed there is a problem at all.

Vaclav Klaus is right, he won’t be listened at this event. It’s all about the big bucks.

This is precisely why I chose not to comment on previous thread re this topic.

  3. NeilD says:

I’d love to see Canada take a stand against this climate change nonsense. It has to start somewhere. Maybe if our government took a strong stance and demanded proof of climate change the Americans would begin to demand the same. BO and CNN can condemn the Republicans all they want but they’d take notice of a close friend and neighbour demanding proof.
The problem, of course, is not David Suzuki and his ilk. It is the left-leaning poli-tainment industry that would welcome the battle and, indeed, encourage it in the name of all of their advertisers.

BTW, does anyone know if they pay these talking head experts? Or do these experts do it for free because they see an appearance on a network show as an add-on to their resume?

The green movement is an outright declaration of war against humanity. If satisfying the green movement entails wrecking out economy, what would be the difference between this green war and an actual shooting war? Economic chaos? Dead people? Starving us economically to the point that we revert to savages in the bush is what these morons want. they want you and your kids dead. period and by your own hands, so that the elitists supporting this dogma don’t get their hands dirty on the genocide that they wish for humanity.

it is high time our gutless politicians declared “war” on greenism, because complying with the directives of greenism is tantamount to surrender. You voting for surrender? I’m not. Cap & trade is surrender. it is surrender of our soveriegn rights to an outside country (the US if they pursue green trade wars and the UN for egging them on).

I don’t have a dog in this fight. I don’t have kids to expalin that you have no future, or freedom under greenism. You posting here might, though. fact is, the greenies are using your kids against you: http://youth.greenparty.ca/en/

  6. Calgary Junkie says:

I get the feeling that the planets are now aligned in OUR favour on this whole climate change nonsense. First and foremost, Obama is a lot weaker, and so will be reluctant to champion much in the way of legislation. Replublican and some Democtrat legislators will be emboldened to weaken him even further, should he stick his neck out too far on any “clean energy” crap.

Second, Iggy and Layton have revealed themselves to be wimps on the gun registry file. We always knew Libs didn’t much believe in any of their rhetoric on any file. Now others like Wendy Cukier are finding out as well. Plus, it’s obvious that Iggy has almost zero control over his caucus, and thus has no ways of forcing them to bend to his will.

So that means Harper can press his advantage, and play some hardball with these guys on the climate file. Prentice’s tough talk is an early indicator of that.

We have the one huge advantage on this as on almost all other files–we are the only party on the “right” side of the climate issue. The lefties can fight amongst themselves for the eco-nutjob vote.

  7. Philanthropist says:

Extortion of money from Canadians by bureaucrats at the UN and in ‘developing’ countries won’t improve anyone’s life, except that of bureaucrats. To hell with them, Canada should walk out and expose these crooks for what they are.

  8. Joanne says:

the greenies are using your kids against you

JT, that reminded me of that Suzuki commercial with him sitting in the tree house with the kids, conspiring against their parents.

    It’s rather frightening, really.

  9. jt says:

Castro did the same. I remember as a 12 year old watching a TV program post take over of Cuba, of the Castroites “interviewing” little kids about their parents. What they said, what the did, etc.

Kids are sweet when they are young, full of trust in their parents as well as most adults they interact with. They really can’t tell a lie, can they?

The green movement is abusing that trust. the fact that a UK blue collar worker took the school boards in England to court, forcing them to play a cantradictory film about Al Gore’s Inconvenient Truth says it all for me. Did that happen here, in Canada? Not that I’m aware of. Our politicians have sold out.

These people are pure evil. As far as I’m concerned they have amply defined themselves as our “enemy”. We should oblige them, engage and destroy them, before they destroy us. No holds barred.

  10. Bruce says:

Glo-Bull Warming is nothing more than a socialist/communist wealth redistribution scheme concocted by the likes of Maurice Strong(Rio Earth Summit), Al Gore(Inconvenient Truth) and David Suzuki(David Suzuki Foundation) that promises developing countries free money in exchange for supporting this lie, but it is in reality even a swindle on the poor countries, because the wealth transfer is designed to line the pockets of those previously mentioned, myriad other environmental organizations and to also line the pockets of the socialist/communist bureaucracy of the UN.

    Just say no……………………………….

  11. Richco says:

It’s worse than Suzuki in a treehouse in Ontario Joanne. Our taxdollars went to infuse as much brainwashing on the environment through an amended curriculum last year. Kids are sitting ducks and a very captive(and innocent) audience for all of this.

Heading out to enjoy some of that Global warming, where in my area bald eagles are making a comeback, and lake levels are up significantly. Too bad we can’t do something about all of the Canada geese which are spoiling our lakefront.

  12. Tripper523 says:

Thanks to Maz2 for putting this global-warming responsibility topic in its proper perspective for we laypeople to collectively digest. Also, our government’s steadfastness in NOT getting sucked into guilt-ridden fiasco does not go without appreciation. As I’ve always maintained, there is absolutely no rationale on Canada’s part to commit to anything at the behest of other nations, be it emissions reductions and/or financial support to countries to initiate their own programs. The “big polluters” like India and China go unchecked and uncontrolled while we’re supposed to sign on? Not likely! Hollywood and The Left be damned! The jury is still out on whether “the earth” (small e), in its non-divine celestial “nature” (small n), is scientifically undergoing trendline changes toward warming or cooling, as our recording history is comparatively recent, and interactive forces of meteorology and geophysics likely have unmeasured cycles in hundreds and even thousands of years. Man’s overall impact is still relatively minute, though increases in population and corresponding emissions-related activity would logically have some effect over time. There is doubtless more detrimental gas seeping from within the Igneutered’s Liebral carcass (do I mean ‘caucus’?) than that expounded upon in Copenhagen, “Something’s Rotten In Denmark”…

  13. jt says:

We’s are up ‘gainst some pow’ful people:

JOURNALISTS WHO DON’T AGREE AREN’T “REAL JOURNALISTS,” and apparently scientists who disagree aren’t “real” scientists:

In the blame game, the Obama administration isn’t about to stop with Fox News. Instead, it’s moving on to lowly scientists.

Last month, President Obama gave a somewhat chilling, if somewhat ignored, speech on climate change at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He stated that any scientific debate about the magnitude of global warming is unscrupulous, decrying “those who . . . make cynical claims that contradict the overwhelming scientific evidence when it comes to climate change, whose only purpose is to defeat or delay the change that we know is necessary.”

Then, the president talked tough, saying, “We’ll just have to deal with those people,” language familiar to anyone who knows the vagaries of Chicago politics.

Maybe he should audit their taxes. The thuggishness continues. Hope and change!

You’d think a Liberal Party friendly Railway Association of Canada commissioned this poll to bolster the LPoC’s many times regurgitated party platform plank of High Speed Rail, wouldn’t you?

    My posts;

*The recently opened Canada line cost $115 million per kilometer to build twenty four kilometers for a cost of a little over $2 Billion dollars, including rolling stock and stations. This is relatively slow speed urban transportation system.

The Windsor corridor is some 539 kilometers long, to build a dedicated two track high speed rail system could cost upwards of $60 Billion, probably quite a bit more owing to land acquisition costs for the right of way and the much higher cost of rolling stock for HSR.

The current program of upgrading the existing track and adding a third track at the eight choke points is the responsible thing to do.

**$407-million upgrade to Via Rail tracks in the Montreal-Ottawa-Toronto corridor, to improve express service.

This includes a third track at key choke points.

***”Ottawa will pay Canadian National Railway Co. $300 million to expand and upgrade the tracks between Montreal and Toronto, an overhaul that will largely benefit passenger carrier Via Rail.

The two-year program will add tracks at eight “pinch points” along the 539-kilometre stretch that has long been the source of bottlenecks and delays for Via Rail trains, and friction between Via Rail passenger trains and CN freight trains. The latter owns and operates the tracks, and its freight trains always take precedence.

The $300 million will come out of two infrastructure improvement programs totalling $923 million that have already been announced, said Via Rail spokesperson Malcolm Andrews.

The bulk of the $300 million — $230 million — will be drawn from the $407 million Ottawa earmarked for Via Rail in the infrastructure part of its economic stimulus package last fall. The other roughly $70 million will be part of an earlier $692-million program, of which $516 million was set aside for capital expenditures like the one announced Thursday.”

And the Liberals continue on their steep descent into political oblivion, soon to be “da turd pardi”.

“In North America, a successful CCS pilot project pipes
CO2 from Beulah, North Dakota to Weyburn,
Saskatchewan where it is injected into a depleted oil
    field.

Since 2000, more than 13 million tonnes of CO2 have
been injected into the oil field with no adverse effects.
An international team of scientists has detected no
leakage of CO2 after extensive monitoring of the project.
CCS projects are being pursued around the world in a
variety of countries including Norway, the United
    Kingdom Denmark and Australia.

Alberta’s $2 billion in funding will enable the province to
take the lead in advancing the technology and actual
applications that can be marketed to other jurisdictions.”

My personal opinion is that carbon capture is a waste of effort, time and money, that such effort and resources would be better utilized by investing in scrubbing technology to further reduce airborne particulate pollution from industrial sources.

Moebius said, “this conservative government is anything but, judging by performance.” Of course the usual line from our friend here who does not seem to recognize pragmatism when it is right in front of his nose, it’s a minority government, would you rather have an election every six months? By the way this is the most successful minority government in Canadian history and when the next election does occur, hopefully in 2012, we will see a majority Conservative government.

Kyoto Protocol compiled by un-elected global bureaucrats
    Ezra Levant

THE Kyoto Protocol was the work of thousands of bureaucrats, diplomats and politicians. But no one person is more responsible for it than a Canadian named Maurice Strong.

Strong organized the UN first-world environmental summit in Stockholm in 1972 and has never stopped pressing for a world where UN resolutions would be enforced as law all over the Earth.

Strong went on to chair the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio and to become senior adviser to Kofi Annan, the UN’s secretary general. Not bad for a kid from Oak Lake, Manitoba, who dropped out of school at age 14.

But Strong is different than other social butterflies who flit from one UN conference to the next. He is a powerful businessman, who has served as president of such massive energy companies as Petro-Canada and Ontario Hydro, and on the board of industrial giant Toyota.

He is a huge political donor, not just here in Canada, but to both the Republican and Democratic parties in the U.S. as well.

At age 29, he became president of Power Corporation, fusing his destiny to Canada’s wealthiest and most influential families – including Paul Martin Sr. and Jr., now heir apparent to the prime minister.

Strong hired Paul Jr. to work for him during a vacation from university. “We controlled many companies, controlled political budgets,” Strong said of his time at Power Corporation. “Politicians got to know you and you them.”

Strong hired Martin into Power Corporation’s executive suite. He helped guide Martin towards unimaginable personal wealth – and even predicted Martin’s path to becoming prime minister. But Strong’s influence reaches farther than Canada.

Indeed, compared to Strong’s American and European friends, Martin is a small star in the constellation.

Strong sits on boards with the Rockefellers and Mikhail Gorbachev and chairs private meetings of CEOs, including Bill Gates. He hobnobs with the world’s royalty, too – and with dictators and despots.”

    Thanks to Mooseandsquirrel;

This article is all about Canadian PR man James Hoggan who runs DeSmogBlog, a site dedicated to smearing those who oppose the junk science of the AGW industry. Hoggan, whose blog was bought and paid for by John Lefebvre — a director of the David Suzuki Foundation and a convicted criminal, maintains that deniers are in the pocket of Big Oil.

Hoggan’s client list, meanwhile, reads like a who’s-who of alternative energy, as Canada’s Financial Post noted:

“There has been no mention on the blog, nor on The Fifth Estate, of James Hoggan’s client list. They include or have included the National Hydrogen Association, Fuel Cells Canada, hydrogen producer QuestAir, Naikun Wind Energy and Ballard Fuel Cells. Mr. Hoggan, in other words, benefits from regulatory policy based on climate change science.”

Expressed another way, PR hack Jim Hoggan’s DeSmogBlog is a godsend for Hoggan’s paying PR clients, spinning everything that could help them get a financial edge in the new carbon emissions markets.

The next time one of these climate alarmists screams about doom and gloom unless we adopt a global compulsory carbon trading scheme, follow the trail of money leading from the hypocrites to Big Green. The next time a warmist points an accusing finger at a detractor and shouts “Denier!”, check to see who really stands to gain financially.

Bruce – Thanks. Good read there.

I wonder if this is the reason for TD’s interest and pushing of carbon pricing?

Big Green gets richer. The ordinary schmoes pay for it.

O/T but I though BLY regulars might be interested in discussing my latest post over at COTM. We talk about media bias and double standards a lot. I really would like some feedback.

    http://crux-of-the-matter.com/2009/11/09/so-how-about-a-conservative-media-watch-blog/

I could put up pages with sample e-mail and letter’s to the editors, etc. A colleague has suggested a “media scale.” I could also put up a “tips” page where bloggers could leave a link to a column or program that was biased. And, I am sure there are lots of other things that could be done as well — including having more than one contributor to COTM on this topic. Anyone? E-mail me: cruxofthematter[at]hotmail[dot]com
