Facts if necessary but not necessarily facts

I guess if you’re delivering a lecture at Harvard you can get away with fudging the details a bit, but as a Prime Minister-in-Waiting, you’d better know your stuff.  Iffy is clearly in over his head.

The Toronto Star’s Tonda MacCharles (!) exposes another chink in the Count’s armour – Ignatieff gets his facts wrong in Arar case:

Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff has told a British newspaper that Canada dispatched Maher Arar to Syria to be tortured.

Ignatieff made the erroneous statement in an interview published in September in The Observer while clarifying his stand against torture…

(H/T NNW)

Now here is the paragraph with which the Star takes issue:

“Canada sent Maher Arar (a Canadian engineer) to Syria, and a court found that he had been subjected to extraordinary rendition, that his claims (of torture) were true and that he had delivered no intelligence to anybody. It was a disgrace. So, we don’t do it. Ever. Period. Off the table. We don’t get other people to do our dirty work for us, and we don’t do dirty work ever.”

But MacCharles says that “Arar was sent to Syria by the United States in late 2002 after he was detained while in transit to Canada through JFK Airport in New York”, and “contrary to what Ignatieff said, no court has made findings of fact in Arar’s case.”

Iffy’s spokeswoman Jill Fairbrother blew off the Star’s request for an interview.

UBC law professor Michael Byers weighs in:

…while public figures sometimes make mistakes, Ignatieff’s statement was related to his own position on torture, “a matter on which he wrote extensively while a Harvard professor, with those writings having since been subject to intense scrutiny.”

“For him to get the facts wrong on the highest profile case of torture involving a Canadian citizen is deeply worrying.

“It suggests a certain lack of attention to detail, and perhaps even concern, on a matter that was engaging the Canadian public, a commission of inquiry, and courts in both Canada and the United States at the very same time that he was expressing opinions on torture in The New York Times.”

Very worrying indeed for someone who could end up being Prime Minister of Canada if the Liberal Party of Toronto has its way.

These would be days off – without pay – similar to “Rae Days” in ‘93 when all provincial employees took 12 days of unpaid leave as a cost cutting measure. With this information coming to light, forgive us for wondering how tuned in to Canada Ignatieff really is.

Wonder if he even knows we paid Arar over $10 million for his troubles?

Wonder if he knows there are some others lined up looking for money for allegedly being tortured while visiting their “homelands”?

Appears instead of being in the loop and on top of recent events, a landmark event at that, Iggy is making a loop to hang himself politically.

    It’s rather unbelievable.

  5. Joanne says:

Mr. Ignatieff, you’re time is up!

  6. Michael Harkov says:

Don Martin says Iggy had a “good week?” LOL What planet is this hack on?

One of the few times that Ignatieff tries to put out some policy (even a joke of a policy like the pink book), he absolutley gets kneecapped by his own war room via Wayne Easter’s dead beaten door knob stunt. The media was lining up to listen to Easter’s staged doorknob drama and a communication officer had to come from Ignatieff’s pink book presser and shoo Easter away to get the media’s attention on Ignatieff.

Harper told everyone to stop with the logos. Since that is now done you know what is going to happen? The EC is going to investigate and slap the Tories on the wrist, tell them not to do it again, and to put plans in place to ensure it never does. And since no money went to line pockets like the Liberal Sponsorship Scandal did, that is all that will happen. Meanwhile, the Liberals will continue to overshadow their rare policy announcements with constant scandal mongering, contributing and offering nothing as an alternative while the Tories continue to govern.

Ignatieff had a “good week?” Heh, talk about setting the bar low.

  7. dillon says:

  14. MI was tricked by Ian Davey. They promised him the job of PM, all he had to do was show up.

  15. Blame Crash says:

    Re : Ig-wiggles having a good week.

Well, it all depends on what you’re used too.

When you’ve only made a cackling spectacle of yourself three times this week, versus it being a daily occurrence previously, you could call that a good week.

Now, as to which planet that Martian is on, is a mute point. It’s more a question of which public broadcaster he’s trying to ingratiate himself to. It’s all about manufacturing a leftist narrative to impress his potential future employers with.

  16. Mary HInes says:

I bet dollars to donuts – there will be NO SIGN OF HER LIBERAL LEADERS SLIP UP on her show on Sunday! – she and Oliver will sock that one away hoping it will long be forgotten!. I also bet there will be nothing about it on Tom’s liberal show tonight… He will be pushing the new poll numbers and how the Conservatives have dropped 2 points… all with his help!…It has to be us to expose Iggy for what he is – empty ideas and say whatever comes in his head if it is factual or not!…. You will not hear anything about this on CTV or the CBC as well and I bet Peter will milk all he can tonight on his panel about the poll today with the Conservatives slipping 2 points…. Nothing about his liberal leader not knowing anything about foreign affairs….what a bunch of bias reporting we have!

  17. Calgary Junkie says:

It wasn’t so bad (except to the LPC), when Iggy the loose cannon was only wrecking the Liberal ship. But now he’s doing damage to the good ship Canada.

There are enough negative narratives developing around Iggy. If an “anti-Canadian” narrative starts to take hold, the Libs are in lots more trouble. It’s great to see Tonda not cutting Iggy any slack.

Next minefield for Iggy is the Olympics: does he cheer whole-heartedly for the home team to finish first overall, or does he revert to analytical mode, and predict a mediocre showing ?

  18. Soccermom says:

Iggy’s week just got worse – guess this good news for Canadians will send the scandal-mongers into overdrive.

I give Iggy’s past week a score of 4 doorknobs out of a possible 10 on the scale where doorknobs are a measure of Liberal excellence. I’m thinking it appropriate that the Liberals change their logo to that which includes a doorknob and that their last photo op have several doorknobs in plain site of Iffy.

“Daring hoax exposes limits of instant journalism

WASHINGTON – You attend a press conference. The newsmaker speaks. You run a DNA test to confirm they are who they claim to be. And then you publish.

An absurd notion. But only marginally more absurd than the high comedy that played out at Washington’s National Press Club on Monday, a few floors above the Toronto Star’s Washington Bureau, when the U.S. Chamber of Commerce made big news that wasn’t.

Already in the news for its hard-lobbying opposition to U.S. climate-change legislation, the pro-business Chamber dropped reporters’ jaws with what appeared to be a turning-point announcement – that the organization now accepts that “without a stable climate, there will be no business.”

The dramatic reversal was conveyed instantly, led by the Reuters agency, and minutes later it was picked up by the New York Times and Washington Post Web sites.

But by the time Fox Business News jumped in with real-time analysis, the real U.S. Chamber of Commerce burst into the news conference, together with red-faced representatives of the National Press Club, to debunk the proceedings as a hoax.

Reporters’ heads swiveled back and forth from the possible interlopers at the podium to the possible interlopers who were calling them out, wondering who among them was legitimate. For a few minutes both sides stood their ground. Someone asked for a business card.

And finally the ruse was revealed – the man purportedly speaking on behalf of America’s largest business lobby was in fact Andy Bichlbaum of the anti-corporate pranksters known as the Yes Men, who had just pulled off their piece de resistance.

After previously impersonating the likes of Dow Chemical, Halliburton and the U.S. Government, the activists had punked their way into the very heart of mainstream American journalism, running a bogus presser in hall of fame studded with the portraits of everyone from Walter Cronkite to Edward R. Murrow.

The real Chamber is hopping mad, as you would expect, and the Press Club is cringingly embarrassed at how easily the acceptance of a $500 room rental fee exposed a major vulnerability to guerrilla-style activism. The rest of us received a cardinal lesson in the dangers of the tweet-first-ask-questions-later pace of modern news.”

I note a story this important is not covered by CTV News – at least I haven’t seen anything yet. Canadians’ real disposable income grew twice as fast as that of Americans’ in the last four years – a trend that will continue in the post-recession economy, finds a new report from CIBC World Markets.

Since 2005, per capita real disposable income in Canada has risen by $2,600, whereas in the U.S. it has risen by just over $1,300. This is a complete reversal of the trend seen in the 1990s when Canadian income stagnated compared to surging U.S. earnings.”

Knowing this group, I always suspect that after a week of PP, piling on the government we have bombarded them with complaints. It almost seems as though the guy piles on harder and is saying, na na na na na!

Yesterday, the Smitherson comments should have been front and center. Ralph Goodale’s accusation in the HoC should have been dissected. Mark Carney’s speech should have been discussed but what happens? Tom continues to alienate what few conservative viewers he has left. It’s so disappointing.

Canwest News Service via National Post ^ | 2009-10-23 | David Akin

OTTAWA – The federal Conservative government got political cover Thursday from a senior Ontario Liberal cabinet minister and from a group representing the country’s municipal leaders over allegations federal economic stimulus funding was being directed to ridings held by Tory MPs.

For several days now, the opposition Liberals and several news organizations have been building the case that more money is going to Tory ridings than non-Conservative ridings.

But George Smitherman, Ontario’s deputy premier and his government’s infrastructure minister, said statistical analyses that have made that case are based on incomplete data and that the Liberal government in his province sees no evidence that federal Conservatives are directing stimulus funding for political gain.”

If Soudas is doing so much harm to the Conservatives you’d expect those Liberal cheerleaders to cheer him on.

Power Play is off my list as of last evening. There’s not a shred of doubt Clark is another player for the Liberals.

Ralphie Goodale sure is one bitter Liberal who cannot accept sitting in Opposition. He has to be angry at the people of Canada too, they elected the Conservatives to govern. He just oozes hatred for the PM and his government both in the House and out. If it’s all for show, he’s one heck of an actor. I believe he accused the Conservatives of fraud in the House but innuendo had to suffice outside the immunity of the House. On PP Clark tried to get him to make the accusation but he hedged around it as he wriggled his butt on the stool using his usual hand gestures.

  55. MaryT says:

I read the 10 CTV stations are in danger of closing in Ontario, wonder how much PP and Tom Clark have to do with losing viewers and advertizers in Ont. If conservatives are turning ctv off, could that be the reason PMSH is gaining strength in that province.
CBC will soon be much better, they are making changes to newsworld, and soon Peter M will be standing to deliver the news. Does that mean his brain will start working. I hardly watch PP with Tommy Clark anymore. Should rename it Bash the Tories Show. Never have watched QP with Giggles and Oliver. Whenever I’ve seen them you can tell they hate PM Harper and the Conservatives.

Maybe Tommy is auditioning to be a Liberal senator if they Liberals ever get back in.

I now watch Glenn Beck. At least you learn something and don’t feel like you need a shower at the end of the show.

  58. Bec says:

What we should all be even more frustrated about is the regionalization of this debate. Where is that in the discussion? Why has that been ignored? What is wrong with a news media that relies on the word of ONLY Ontario MP’s and then a rebuttal by Ontario Minister, Smitherman?
Where was their concern and dissection of infrastructure $’s for 9 other provinces and 2 territories?
Where are the interviews from those officials?

This is bunk! The national television networks are spending millions of dollars telling Canadians that we will lose our regional stations but in the meantime, they have resorted to placing Canadian national events into a square box called upper and lower Canada.

    This should outrage ALL CANADIANS!

  59. Peter says:

Just make sure you email Tom Clark to let him know that you are not impressed with his impartiality on the show. Take a strip of him every time his bias shows and let others on CTV know that as well.
    tclark@ctv.ca

  60. Joe says:

The answer bec is obvious. The only MPs the libs have are from Ontario. Hence the name LPOT

  61. MaryT says:

When sending emails to Tom Clark, add a little blurb saying you will not be watching olympic coverage on ctv, or the torch run, especially as ctv has designated 27 of their people to carry the torch.
One could go further and contact all advertisers that they will boycott them until ctv changes its bias and fires Clark.
And why is there no outrage over the liberal red mittens with the maple leaf on them.

  62. Fay says:

Agree Bec, that Tom Clark has turned this show into politics for Upper and Lower Canada! My favourite part on Mike Duffy was The Radio Guys. They were a mix of talk radio from all parts of Canada. I noticed that Tom Clark appeared very uncomfortable with comments made by former finance minister of BC. Yesterday he featured only Peter Donalo and Jean Pierre. They happily told Tom what he wanted to hear.
I don’t think CTV cares about all Canadians. They didn’t blink an eye closing down Brandon’s local CTV station.

  63. Ardvark says:

Not to defend Power Play but sometimes there are little gems that appear now and then.

  64. jad says:

I have to say I used to think Clark was pretty fair and even-handed. There were moments, as in when he went after Lisa Raitt unmercifully, but by and large he was more reasonable than any other political commentator on TV. He certainly did not have Duff’s personality, but I enjoyed the perspective he brought to US/Canada relations.

Since he came back in September, however, things have changed and he simply parrots Liberal talking-points, feeds Liberal MPs puff questions, and tries to ambush Conservatives.

I can only imagine his ratings have dropped, and he thinks the only way to keep his job is to go overboard for the Liberals.

  65. Fay says:

I thought the same thing about CTV red mittens for the Olympics Mary T. I quess Craig Oliver would say that shows we are overly partison and just tell us to SHUT UP!!!

  66. Richco says:

CTV viewers…..suckers ALL! It’s a sickness I tell you! Viewership is going down for a reason..well, except for the way too many here who seem to have little choice.

Knock it off! They’re really not worth the time. As Joanne has said, CBC of late is turning out much better and balanced fare.

“I don’t pretend to have all the answers. I’m still learning. And there are three or four other pieces that have to be there before Canadians start to think, ‘Yeah, well, he’s at least thinking about our future,’ ” he says, again casting forward. “He’s not up there at 50,000 feet, he’s trying to address the anxieties and anguish that I saw in that food line, that I see in the supervisor’s face. And you have to make that connection. And it’s not enough to just have lots of ideas, lots of policies. People have got to feel, ‘That guy, he’s in my corner. He’s a little funny, he’s got a funny name, he’s been outside the country, but he’s in my corner.’ I mean, that’s the connection you have to make. It’s very visceral. And I feel I make the connection constantly. I don’t think I’m dreaming.”

  68. Jen says:

Oliver loves Trudeau apparently Trudeau can do no wrong. He is proud that 80% of canadian national debt is caused by his beloved Trudeau. Can you imagine- 80%. We should remind Clark of that one.
I can’t watch PP anymore, the man goes hysterical that the conservatives are spending wheres the liberal were accumilating an eight year balance budget by cutting funds to infrastrusture health military etc etc. the very same areas this prime minister has to clean up now after liberal years of neglect.

You see, all that money the prime minister is spending is causing a major problem for the liberals and their petty media as they see money slipping through their fingers for the sake of canadians canadians who were ignored by the liberal party of canada. And as money flow into communities; Tom’s dream of seeing some of that cash for the hard work of displaying himself as a fool for the sake of LPOC, is beyond reach. That is why he is so pissed off at the PM.

Tom Clark and the rest of them are not interested in the canadian public. PERIOD.

  69. Jen says:

Good on the prime minister for saying that he doesn’t listen to the canadian news. Who does anyway, the same drawn out media repeat the same drawn out MEDIAS’ NEWS-NOT CANADIAN NEWS- a big difference.

“Benoît Corbeil’s downfall linked to friend
    who became agent C4590

Citing ‘vengeance’ rather than cash payments, Alain Renaud offered to work with the RCMP to help bring down key figure in the Liberal sponsorship scandal

Benoît Corbeil and Alain Renaud were best of friends in the heyday of the Chrétien government, calling themselves “brothers” as they organized for the Liberals through the 1990s and early 2000s.

The friendship seemed strong enough to last a lifetime – except that in 2004 Mr. Renaud embarked on a secret mission as “C4590,” a key informant in the massive RCMP investigation into the sponsorship scandal.

In a previously unknown tale of intrigue and betrayal, Mr. Renaud wore a wire to help the Mounties nail Mr. Corbeil on charges of fraud and influence peddling last year. For his work, he received $29,000 plus a $50,000 performance bonus, and has now been relocated into the witness protection program, with the RCMP effectively granting him immunity from prosecution. And his labours could bear further fruit: Mr. Renaud provided information on at least two other players in the scandal, with the potential for more bonus money, documents show.

Mr. Corbeil, now 46, former director-general of the Liberal Party’s Quebec wing, pleaded guilty last year and underwent a sentencing hearing in Montreal Friday.”

2-for-1 sentencing. Amendment would have weakened legislation

The unelected Senate has retreated from a fight with elected MPs over a bill designed to eliminate a judicial practice, when sentencing offenders, to credit them on a two-for-one basis for each day already spent in detention.

The proposed legislation became enshrined into law yesterday, after the upper chamber voted against a Senate committee’s amendment two weeks ago to dramatically weaken the bill because it removes discretion for judges to sentence as they see fit.”
