Harpermania!

I join my fellow Blogging Tories in congratulating Prime Minister Stephen Harper on his amazing performance at last night’s National Arts Centre gala!  For someone who grew up during the Beatle years, this is the icing on the cake in terms of my admiration for the PM.

*   *   *   *

Meanwhile, my pal ChuckerCanuk imagines what the situation would have been like if Iffy had been Prime Minister (or do you need a retake for that question?):

I get high with a little help from my Prime Minister. Well worth the read! (H/T Sammy)

MSM has a slew of great articles on this story but as Batb pointed out, the comments at the Star are uncharacteristically favourable towards the PM. Thanks as well to Maz2 for this link and to so many of my readers for bringing me up to date this morning. New grandmas go to bed early.

One of the readers calls the Star up on their snark:

Singing PM

Even in a moment of fun, Harper is still accused of being devious. What onearth [sic] do the by-elections have to do with this? Come on Star get over yourself.

This is great! – Harper gets by with a little help from his arts friends - John Ivison (Post). It seems that Laureen was the genius behind this appearance:

Mrs. Harper said she knew she had her man when he said “maybe” to the idea.

Head on over to Sandy’s and visit your one-stop shopping centre for bloggers and media covering this story – PM Harper performs at NAC: Mr. Piano Man rocks!

DMB has a link to Starr & McCartney performing the song. Frankly, I prefer the Harper-Ma rendition (H/T SDA).

Big Update: O.K. This is what I was waiting for – Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper sings the Beatles: Telegraph.

As Raphael says, this thing is going viral!

Monday Update: U.S. blogger Wintery Knight wishes Stephen Harper was his President!Stephen Harper plays Beatles song while playing piano.

Well I’ll make a deal with you,  Knight. You can have Michael Ignatieff instead. He’s more at home there anyway. We’re keeping PM Harper!

Tuesday Update: I found a longer YouTube version of Prime Minister Harper’s charity singing debut.

“I think when ordinary working people come home, turn on the TV and see a gala of a bunch of people at, you know, a rich gala all subsidized by taxpayers claiming their subsidies aren’t high enough, when they know those subsidies have actually gone up – I’m not sure that’s something that resonates with ordinary people,” Harper said in Saskatoon, where he was campaigning for the Oct. 14 election.

    Harpermania? Nah, just more hypocrisy.

What the PM has done is endear even MORE boomers to him. I’ve sent the clip to everyone on my mailing list with the subject “Match THAT Iggy!”

Of course it’s the best Jeff’s got…..ZERO equals the LPOC’s chances of forming a government anytime soon.

Let’s flip this discussion around now please….Iggy and the Liberals deserve nothing at all today.

This is about a man who is not just a good leader but who can get up and play piano and sing at the NAC even though it’s not in the character the media twits like to portray.

Good thing that pleasing the media has never been the goal of Harper….he actually rises above them each time they through up a wall in his way.

One thing the public hates more than corrupt politic1ans and sleaze it’s holier than thou media twits.

  12. Fay says:

My husband and I were watching CTV late news when suprise! Stephen Harper playing piano at gala and recieving a standing ovation! Bravo! My brother and sister-in-law live in Ottawa and by all accounts the Harper family are well liked . Their grandson plays hockey against Ben. They have sent us articles and say he deserves every accolade he recieves. By all accounts the Harper Family is well liked in Ottawa. The National Press must be real Hard A$$e$ to keep up their HATE on Stephen Harper.

  13. WCT says:

What a GREAT number. Rock on PM and let’s take this country by storm.

  14. Jeff says:

So it’s safe to say that when Harper claimed ordinary Canadians didn’t connect with rich gala goers, he didn’t mean Conservatives? Apparently the Blogging Tories aren’t ordinary Canadians because they’re all over themselves with this performance.

  16. Dave says:

I think the PM did himself proud. Despite people like Jeff and the Lib media wanting us all to focus on an old quote that has nothing at all to do with the present, this particular gala is a major fundraiser for ‘Youth in the Arts’.

So all the naysayers who close their eyes and ears and just scream how ‘Harper hates the Arts community’, can go pound salt as far as I’m concerned. Hopefully, there are a few among that group, that still possess some independent thinking (rather than the herd mentality), who will keep an open mind in the future re our Prime Minister.

PM Harper … you were awesome! I totally enjoyed your (and the other musician’s) version of one of my all time favourite Beatles songs. Well done.

  17. paulsstuff says:

Uh, Jeff, you might want to get something to wipe that egg off your face. Last nights gala was a paid-ticket event, with tickets ranging from the mid-$100 to mid $200 range. It turns a profit, with some of the proceeds being donated to charity, in the case of last nights gala the recipient being the National Youth and Education Trust, which helps youth in the performing arts.

So you see Jeff, through ticket sales a profit is turned, some of said profit is then donated to improve the arts. Last nights gala was exactly the type of event the PM endorses, buyer pay and the arts benefits from private dollars.

Maybe move on to your next rant.

  18. ferrethouse says:

No wonder the Libs are in free fall when this is the best they’ve got.

The partisanship really is tiresome. You would think that Libs could just say “nice job” for a change. Instead, they have to reach for a pathetic argument like this to be critical 100% of the time. Lame.

Falling for MSM spin much jeff?
The MSM is trying a little spin on exactly what PMSH said last year. He referred to taxpayer money going for glitzy-ditzy events. Last night at NAC was not that type of event.
Proud of PMSH, and no accident on the song…he has a great sense of humour!

  33. Tripper523 says:

Oh Jeff of the Igneutered… Talk about starting off a thread on the wrong foot!
A time for rejoicing over a PM who can reach everyone from the ordinary to the pompous, will not be dampened by the presence of moles or trolls however Ignoble.
Our federal helmsman is a man of all seasons, who represents Canadians with integrity and high esteem. A basically humble man, with multiple talents to display, he does so gracefully and gradually, so as not to overwhelm, but simply to delight and reassure. PMSH is a cool, altogether-guy with many friends, and he’s getting MORE all the time, just by being himself in the face of incredulous adversity, as evidenced by more people indicating that they would jump the LPC shipwreck in-the-making. (See today’s TO.STAR letters-to-the-editor)
The MSM will be forced to concede that they have no concrete basis for criticism of a PM who is fast becoming more ‘mainstream’ himself.

  34. LC Bennett says:

That was great, just great. Of course, it could have been improved by including a bit of country or blues but still nicely done. heh.

I am surprised PMSH agreed to do this – did he lose a bet to Obama at the G20? You just know that Rick Mercer will feature this little number on next weeks show.

BTW, did any member of the PPG survive the shock?

  35. Gabby in QC says:

    Context, Jeff, context!

Yes, the PM did make those remarks.
    But when?
It was in reaction to comments made by the Quebec artistes attending the Gemini Awards which took place on Sept. 14, 2008.
At that time those artistes dissed the PM and his government for “arts cuts” that were actually minor cuts to some limited programs.

That reply to the whining [my own opinion] Quebec artistes was torqued into “arts-hating Harper” and “gala-hating Harper” by the usual suspects.

No surprise from the ignorant idiots who conveniently forget context.

  36. Platty says:

Jeff? Jeff? A typical Jeff posting, starts out full of piss and vinegar, someone calls him on his nonsense, Jeff leaves the building with his tail between his legs, waiting for the next post to make an ass out of himself.

Why don’t you tell us what you are really feeling Jeff, that you are finding it harder and harder to find reasons to dislike the PM, and like most Canadians, find yourself being drawn to the Conservative side of the political spectrum.

Don’t fight it Jeff, for you will only be truly happy when you can say, “I too am blue like you”.

  40. If your party (Liberal) was again polling the worst in over 100 years you would be trying anything to change the channel. Desperate times for the Rosedale gang keeping their clueless Professor as their leader.

  41. MaryT says:

Listening to iffys speech in Quebec, to bring order out of chaos, but all he is doing is dissing the PM. His applause is nowhere near what the PM got last night.
Green shaft is still on his plate, french language in all fed buildings, across Canada, from Yellowknife to even Toronto.
Mentioned the PM attending a gala but it is too little too late to gain respect in the arts community.
Bill 101, is a must across Canada.
He mentions he has written a few books, and mentions his experience overseas.
Quebecers were the first to abandon the PM, as long as there are protest votes, PMSH will stay in office. As soon as an alternative is found he will be out, and the alternative is him. Status quo is Layton/Duceppe but change is us.
I give up, something else must be on tv.

  42. jad says:

As a song for Ignatieff, I would suggest “Yesterday”…..”all my troubles seemed so far away ….”.

  43. Bruce says:

    From the Ten Things That You Probably Don’t Know About Stephen Harper @ Conservative.ca;

    He can rock …
Public praise is music to the ears of many politicians but for Prime Minister Harper, classic rock’s more his taste – with a particular bent for the Beatles and Blue Rodeo. His love of music wasn’t lost on Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk who, during a meeting in Gdansk earlier this year, presented the PM with an original vinyl version of Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk.

He can sing (sort of) …
An activist by nature, the Prime Minister isn’t content to let others do all the singing. He won’t hesitate to lend a voice when warranted. The PM eagerly participates in karaoke with family and friends … and freely admits that politics was, by far, the better career choice.

He plays piano (even better) …
The PM’s musical talents don’t stop with singing. He taught himself to play piano, eventually making it to Grade 9 with the Royal Conservatory of music, and seldom passes by a piano without sitting down – if even for a short tune.

  44. SGM says:

Wow! This was awesome! Bravo PM Harper…what a great, great job. And many thanks to Mrs. Harper for suggesting it.

  45. LC Bennett says:

Thanks, Jad. I guess if PMSH throws off his “uptight, mean-spirited, hyper-partisan” persona then the media should throw off their “judgmental, petty, hyper-partisan” bias (at least momentarily).

  46. MaryT says:

Re iffy and Bill 101 to be implemented across Canada.
When bilingualism first became law, I was working at Canada Customs. A car with two young men from Quebec come thru and wanted to be cleared in French. The officer spoke Ukranian and started to question them in Ukranian. Shocked looks, but he told them to pull over to the compound, and they would get an officer who spoke french down from Calgary. Would take about 5 hours, please stay in your car till he arrives. Very hot July day, they looked at each other and decided it was not worth the effort, spoke english and went on their way. But not until their car, luggage, and tires were searched. Wonder if they tried that again.

  52. Soccermom says:

Yeah, I caught that, too Sammy @ 1:03. He also trotted out the “knocked on doors with Mike Pearson” bit and added, “Yes, I’m that old”. (Hint: Don’t talk about that too much). Talking about how wonderful and great the LPT is. Liberal this, Liberal that. Not much about how great Canada is though.

So again he’s saying we’ve spent too much and then complains about arts cuts. He is so Iffy.

The plaudits and encomiums for PM Harper keep on rolling in.

    …-

    “A political master stroke”

“Politically, this was a master stroke. The video clip of the PM, singing in tune, having a laugh and enjoying a great piece of music is now launched on the Internet, and the viral impact will likely be extensive. Not a moment of it looked false, even though it could hardly have been more carefully planned.

With this revealing moment, the PM also threw down the gauntlet in the general direction of Michael Ignatieff. For months, the Conservatives have been painting the Liberal Leader as diffident, elitist, not really one of us. Liberals could be excused for wondering if Harper would really be able to win a contest around personal likeability.”

    Bruce Anderson

  55. MaryT says:

Song for iffy, from comments in one of the numerous stories on this, I’m a Travelling Man.
How about a talent contest instead of a debate and we phone in our choices. PMSH on the piano, Layton on Guitar, Gilles reading the FLQ manifesto, iffy reading a passage from one of his books, or a chapter of War and Peace. And if lizzie is included she could do an imitation of a beaver chewing a tree.
Someone made a comment, tongue in cheek, that the PM ticked off Quebec as he didn’t sing in french.
I also caught the Q&A presser with iffy.

  56. Sammy says:

I’ve been waiting for this one…WK has weighed in!States in his opener:Reviled Cons PM..and I won’t gag you with the brief blurb that follows.I guess poor WK can’t deal with all the great msm coverage, when his ‘guy’ is drowning! I love it!!!

  57. Michael Harkov says:

And of course, Kinsella has to be a total **** when blogging about it. This jerk can’t even let go of his partisan hatred for one measely second to offer, at best, gruding respect for a decent thing the PM did. No, please don’t give him the extra traffic, take my word for it.

And Sammy, I saw that media scrum with Ignatieff as well. It probably took all night for one of his cronies to think of that cute little line for their “leader”, just waiting for an opportunity to inevitably drop it because he knows the media is buzzing over the PM’s perfomance. Ignatieff just ended up looking petulant.

And that is the difference – while the media is talking about how pleasently surprised they are regarding how down to earth the PM really was after that performance, they are left sitting with Ignatieff in abject silence at an awkward attempt to be witty.

You know, I get this sense of a buzz in the air; the Tories are definetly on a roll now, no question about it. That buzz is the sound of inevitability and it got louder after the PM’s performance last night. If an election comes, sooner rather than later I think, we ARE going to get that majority. I have absolutley no doubt about it now.

How about the Beatles “YESTERDAY” especially the first verse

    Yesterday,
All my troubles seemed so far away,
Now it looks as though they’re here to stay,
    Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Just wondering if anybody caught Ignegatives speach in Quebec where he says ,” A majority where Canadians admire people that leave the country , (then he said somebody I couldn’t make out ), then he says ” people like me ” . It’s just after the 6 minute mark on the second video –http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20091004/liberal_meeting_091004/20091004?hub=TopStoriesV2 – Now what is he going to do about this ? Legislate that we admire him ? What if Stephen Harper said this ? There’d be 200 stories calling him some kind of ego-mainiac .

  77. paulsstuff says:

Man, Iffy’s political career is disappearing so fast we’ll probably see his face on the side of milk cartons.

  78. Sammy says:

There is something telling about WK ignoring this big ‘healing’ that’s supposedly going on in Que today. There’s nothing up on his blog blowing Iggy’s Ego up another notch after another ‘me me’ speech. Instead,he’s gotta make high-school jealous comments about something as nice as PMSH singing! That my friends IS the real caliber of the Lib party.
You know, the more I see the clip of PMSH,the more I enjoy it! It really has made me smile all day..not because of the political coup it is,but just for the sheer fun of it! I especially enjoy all the musicians and the delight they are showing. Can’t these miserly, nasty Libs see that?

  79. MaryT says:

QP doesn’t come on here till 4.p.m., so had to wait. Jennings was very calm, must have taken a prozac, but what a bunch of crap she spouted. The party is unified, it is normal to get last minute attendees. But, if the party is so unified, and a great family, where was Codere. Mulcair was also calm in his faceoff with Cauchon. If Cauchon is having a nomination meeting, who is also running. Acclamation is not a contest.
In the HofC tomorrow will iffy or gilles bring up the piano bit. Was iffy or wife at the gala, and if not, do they hate the arts.
Paulstuff, a priceless remark, and probably true.

Wonderful day for Canadians (and Conservatives)…this does Us proud!!
As for Mr Ignatieff?…Ah!…not so proud.
Micheal…Please cash in you chips and go home…you’re definitely playing Over Your Limit!!

Mr Harper…thankyou very much for such a pleasant treat…Why more people haven’t realized your humour and wit before now is puzzling…though not really. I am sure Rick Mercer would agree.

Brassy you aren’t…which goes a long ways with our family.

Mr Ignatieff and his mean spirited comments brings to mind one Beatle’s tune title, that to me truly sticks,(and many superlative ones have been mentioned above),and that is “Fool on the Hill”
Wear it with pride(and indigestion) Mr Ignatieff for it truly catches the ‘essence’ of you as no other can.

  81. Sammy says:

Angello Persichilli on ctv now re:Iggy/Que thingy..not much faith in the ‘party being unified’..said Iggy highly irresponsible for wanting an election..they are absolutely hurting in Que..the party IS split,no matter what they say. Also said that some libs may vote Cons if election called.

re: Harper going to India and China – Ha! Iggy talks a good game about his supporting India and China but guess what? The PM trumps Iggy AGAIN!!

Oh, and didn’t Iffy cancel his jaunt to China? Something about bringing down the government?

    What a maroon.

PM Harper – man of action!

  85. Michael Harkov says:

I just saw Question Period with Marlene Jennings, Pierre Pollivere, and Thomas Mulcair.

Mulcair reminded Jennings that there will be a confidence motion coming up related to the HST, which he called “a boondoggle”. He basically challenged her party to find a stand on that issue. Pollivere smiled and stood out of the way, reiterating that his government doesn’t want an election and wants to continue to work for Canadians on issues like the recovering economy.

Well folks, it looks like the NDP is starting to regain their bravado. The Liberals are hemorrhaging and the NDP smells their blood in the water. I don’t think it will be much longer now – either Ignatieff backs off when his bluff is called in the next confidence vote and loses even more credibility, or we go to an election that he will lose.

With story after story and poll after poll, the Tories clearly have running momentum on their side. I also caught the Liberal caucus meeting in Quebec City. I see a lot of attempts at a brave face, but I know that look; they’re afraid.

    And they should be. :)

I love Adler’s turn of a phrase..on his twitter pg,he has link to Iggy’s speech, and his comment on it:Iggy in Que.,rallies libs with vacant language that would have made Trudeau purge his pancakes! Exactly.
Michael at 8:35,I saw the fear too..there was one guy in second row behind Iggy, and I thot he looked as if he was on verge of tears.then, the ever obnoxious Jennings started yelling some kind of ‘cheer’ that she was the only participant in.Rallying the troops looked rather flat, and somewhat desperate.Honest to God,I thot my dogs had passed some real bad gas,but it was the odor of fear coming right thru the tv! You Betcha!!

  90. cantuc says:

Every time a liberal speaks I automatically look for the lie . I’m rarely disappointed . Watching the desperation on their faces and the false phony smiles when they’re trying to deny something that everybody in Canada knows is fascinating . Some of them are a bit better at hiding it than others . Their scandal of the week game is so bloody transparent it’s laughable . Just in the last 2 or 3 weeks , we’ve had Bob Rae trying to tell us that Iggy never signed the co-alition agreement , Kennedy and Iggy in the wrong field of magic bean dreams , Mad Martha trying the olympic logo -conservative logo matchup and every liberal that can still speak without drooling all over him or her self trying to tell us how united and happy the liberals are .

“”We’re going to hell in a hand basket.”

“But the Quebec MP who is the most serious candidate to replace Mr. Ignatieff is neither Mr. Coderre, nor Mr. Cauchon, but rookie Justin Trudeau (Papineau, Que.), said the Liberal MP who asked not to be identified.”

    Ignatieff must think thoughts:

“has to do some in-depth thinking”.

Just to reiterate, “getting high with a little help from my friends” refers to the CPC’s rising star in the polls; it’s not a condoning of the misfortunes of one former MP Jaffer, who squandered a privileged liftstyle and reputation. Also, as to PMSH’s prowess on the piano, I erroneously posted my vision of the Opposition’s entertainment rebuttal last night on the wrong thread…>>

When trying to imagine a Mikhail Igneutiev comparative chart-breaker, all I’m picturing is a murdered version of Alice Cooper’s “Elected”…. “I WANNA BE ELECTED!” But oh… Sorry… That song was to do with the United States of America, wasn’t it? “No connection” there, is there? Did they ever conduct an honest election in Russia? They do in Canada… Another reason why the Igneutered One will find no potency here, and no Liebral fertility drug can help. No powers here to raise the dead, and WE are happy to be among the living, ie. Harpermania is spreading fast!
