Steady hand at the wheel

Many signs have pointed to likelihood that PM Harper will not deliberately provoke an election anytime soon, and none is a surer indicator than Steven Chase’s Globe report that four by-elections are expected to be called as soon as Sunday.

This proves that the Conservative Government is concentrating on continuing to steer Canada through these rocky economic waters and towards the shore of recovery. All this falls in line with recent columns by both John Ivison and Michael Bliss that this Parliament is actually in no danger of falling right now as long as Stephen Harper restrains his ‘baser instincts’ and keeps his eye on the long game. (Leave the attack-dog stuff to John Baird, Mr. Prime Minister.)

No doubt it would be very tempting to take advantage of the current turmoil in the Liberal Party, but Prime Minister Harper is wise to wait. As long as the NDP are low in the polls they will likely ensure that there is no election. This gives the Conservatives more time to demonstrate competency and more time for Iffy to self-destruct.

If an election does occur either by accident or opposition design, the wrath of an angry electorate will fall squarely on the shoulders of Michael Ignatieff.

This is a good time to be a Conservative in Canada.

Update: Excellent editorial at the Star PhoenixLiberal leader now non-factor in political game (H/T Bourque):

…Quebec just isn’t as important to the fortunes of the Conservatives as it is to that of the Liberals. However, with the Prairies in Tory hands, B.C. all but lost to their party and their support in Ontario waning, the Liberals need Quebec. That’s what makes one-time Quebec lieutenant Denis Coderre’s accusation that he lost out to a Toronto clique so damaging for Mr. Ignatieff…

Either way, whether an election is called or not the PM wins. An election gets him a majority while no election gets Harper’s government much more time to steer the mighty Canada ship.

As opposed to the Liberal SS Minnow, complete with Gilligan, Skipper, Ginger and Mary-Ann taking on more water by the day.

As we’re gearing up for Thanksgiving this week, all attention should be on how lucky and grateful we are to live in such a wonderful country that’s doing better than hoped economically and where contrary to Count Iffy of Puffin Roost Canadians can still wear our flag with pride where ever they are.

Joanne – indeed it’s a good time to be a conservative AND female!

As opposed to our PM’s steady hand on the wheel, the Libs spiral into stupidity! Read ‘Ottawa’s sad scene’ in Nat.Post, which captures the desperation, and sheer stupidity of Libs this past wk: ie,Hedy and ‘logogate’..MHF asking in QP:’what are Canada’s colors?’…that’s how low the lib party has sunk.We also have Iggy and Gerard appearing in the ‘empty field of dreams’..poor fact-checking by the TORLibs ‘backroom boys’..they can’t get even these small things right!

BTW Jo..you’re gonna need a second job to pay for all the goodies for new Grandbaby! Hey..just doing my part to boost the economy.
Seriously tho,I have had such pleasure looking at baby items..I know you’ll find the same!

It’s been a long time in the wilderness, at least 25 years, but, as you point out, Joanne, it sure feels good to be a Conservative these days!

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his sober diligence and genuine concern for the plight of “ordinary” Canadians (as opposed to the privileged, entitled, special interest Canadians the LPC and their MSM lapdogs court) give us a plethora of reasons to be proud. His political savvy on the international scene is also reason for Canadians to hold our heads up high.

Those reasons alone are enough to be proud. Add them to the dastardly, dismal, and desperate antics of the Librano$ in the past few years and it’s even clearer that it’s PMSH and his CPC that Canadians want steering the ship of state for the foreseeable future.

    Go, Harper, Go!

  5. Michael Harkov says:

Remember what happened after the last set of by-elections that occured when Dion was leader? I bet Iggy does. :D

Proud days indeed! As it’s been said, “this is OUR time”. The fruition of decent represention with the Harper Government could even be quite ‘fashionable’ as more and more people are enlightened to this new and precedent-setting integrity. We can wear our CPC or Olympic colours interchangeably and stand tall! Meanwhile, the Liebral Minnow with its beleaguered Igneutered skipper is reeling, compass spinning and rocks waiting. It is indeed a time to savour, whether an election is triggered soon or not. Mikhail Igneutiev’s damage control in Québec is an interesting foray as it plays out… His image, however, is still inescapably that of the Grinch who’s about the steal the forthcoming Christmas…>>

It is indeed a good time to be a Conservative AND a male.

I think that Iffy has cooked the Liberal goose with his Dirty Harry routine.

I can’t see this working out well for the Liberals. They have made themselves redundant with this brassy incompetent declaration and now serve no purpose to their constituents or Canadians with their warm body/seat warming routine.

There is no advantage whatsoever for the PM to do anything but stay with his long game and the longer the better.
Watching what this country could have had as an alternative, is what nightmares are made of.

Very good time to be Conservative and the future ‘Natural Governing Party’…

  11. Joanne says:

Sammy, I think a Conservative majority would be a blessing in disguise for the Liberals. They need to get their act together, and they can’t do that while continually on election-alert status.

Moreover, if there were a Conservative majority all the opposition parties could feel free to oppose without the worry of triggering an election.

    JMHO.

  12. Tripper523 says:

Right on, Jo! It would certainly narrow the dimension (and dimentia) for the opposition parties in a C Majority situation. Rehab and reorganizational time for them, while their constituents would be supportive and patient, sticking with their underdog roles, until they again grab the brass ring of power via improved platform or resultant government scandal… It all recycles, but YES, savour these times! Iffy should have done the exact opposite at the first of Sept.and they wouldn’t be where they are now, imho.

  16. It may be a good time to be a Conservative (large “c”), but not so good to be a conservative (small “c”). In the U.S., extreme elements of the conservative movement give the movement a bad name and in Canada we are faced with “big government” policies. Freedom of expression is under attack by the human rights industry and not so much as a peep from our PM to give us some hope that he’ll do something to correct the situation.

Yes, good times for the Conservative Party of Canada do not always translate to good time for us conservatives.

Russ @ 11:09 am – I’ll take a Harper centrist government over an Iffy government any day.

  20. Soccermom says:

I disagree with parts of your comment Russ Campbell. The small c conservative movement in the U.S. is regaining ground. Who is giving them a bad name? Each side has fringes, and I would say the left has the real nutcases. People like Glenn Beck are doing the investigating the “MSM” refuses to do. Rush Limbaugh is no nutcase. If you’ve listened to his shows it’s nothing but common sense and a little humour. But of course the MSM would have you believe otherwise. The tea partiers are patriots who believe in the constitution that the Dems down there increasingly want to trample upon. Americans are making their feelings known. We conservative Canadians have a lot to learn from our American friends who are conservatives.

In fact, I believe it’s liberals in the U.S. who are looking more and more creepy as the days go by. Have a look at O’s list of czars, lately? Radical leftists would be a nice way of putting it. He has a guy who believes animals should have lawyers. He has a gay activist as a “safe schools czar”, he has eugenics and forced abortion advocates as an advisor as well. O was involved very deeply with Acorn (and we all know what a bunch of crazies those people are). His Green Jobs czar had to resign because of his “truther” beliefs, among other radical things). Nice. No, it’s the left that looks pretty bad right now.

Small c conservatism in Canada is having a difficult time. But that is understandable (but no less frustrating) because it’s a minority situation and Canada has been forced so far left since Trudeau that it’s difficult to get things “right” again. I agree with you there, Big Government needs to get smaller.

  21. bluetech says:

Well Russ…thanks for that. I didn’t want to be the party pooper here.
As a Canadian conservative I’m so proud to be a Conservative right now.
Yes, PMSH is steering the country with a steady hand. I admire him for all that he has accomplished at home and internationally. And he has earned those poll numbers…leading in Ontario!? Wow, just wow!

However, if he continues to steer with those incremental changes that were alluded to after the last election then we can hope to see Section 13 discarded, and the HRC’s cleaned up,
and changes to the criminal ‘justice’ system,
    changes to the CBC budget,
    gun registry scrapped.
    Adscam money returned.
    Any others?

Basically the Libs will be ‘present’ only in the HoC and Parliament. They are seat warmers, not even eye candy.

    et’s git ‘er done!!

  22. Lorraine says:

Question: Why would the NDP want an election ever? Here’s why:

Jack cannot hope to top his current 34 seats. Even if he did he will ALWAYS be in a position to vote with or against either a Conservative or Liberal government.

Is is somehow more”NDPish” to vote with Liberals than Conservatives? Why is that?

Were all of those Nay votes this year actually machinations to goad the Liberals into a coalition pact which is now (we hope) dead in the water.

About 1/2 the NDP caucus don’t qualify for pensions until June 2010- some not until 2014 to have their 6 years.

Election or not, Jack is facing a leadership review – I think quite soon.

    An election would:
Empty already bare NDP coffers and put them in debt
Lose seats because the country is clamoring for a majority
Screw up the country’s battle against the recession which affects” ordinary working people”.
Olivia’s seat is not safe and how could they live on only half of the $400,000 or so they rake in together.

Jack is all about Jack and an election would kneecap Jack. His famous ego and personal finances are best served the way it is now with an ineffectual Liberal party and HIM getting interviewed every time there is a confidence vote.

That’s as close to power as this little fellow will ever get.

  24. Calgary Junkie says:

Iggy appears more and more like a front-man. A spokesperson for whoever is calling the shots for the LPC, while hiding behind the curtain. He has basically memorized a bunch of talking points, and rattles off the most appropriate ones, depending on the circumstances.

When pressed about Coderre in his scrum, he was clearly uncomfortable, paused a lot, and was struggling to get the right “message” out. He is nowhere near as smooth a frontman that the Liberal puppetmasters were hoping for.

On the “smoothness” scale of 1 to 10, with 1 representing the early Dion, and 10 representing Bill Clinton, I’d say Iggy is now at about 2.5 … and falling.

”Is is somehow more”NDPish” to vote with Liberals than Conservatives? Why is that?”
Brainwashing by the Liberals to keep them in power.
Kyoto is a good example, make big noise, do nothing, but ‘appear’ to be the lefties best hope.

Jack is doing EXACTLY what Dippers need to do to become relevant.
Paint the LPC and CPC as one in the same, so as the NDP can vote ‘issue by issue’
(a winning page right out of Duceppe’s playbook).
    without a backlash.
And it’s working, the majority of Canadians AND NDP supporters are behind Jack’s move.

I fear a maj. gov’t would complicate things for him. I also think that we cease to have democracy with maj. gov’ts. under the present structure. I recall PMSH musing that currently no one could achieve a maj. — the Bloc. prevents that. Therefore parliamentary cooperation perhaps is reality for Canada from now on. Perhaps that’s good I’m not sure….

The conservative had brought in a bill something to do with protection of marital rights for aboriginal women.

The NDP ignored the bill for the aborignal women rights etc and the ndp have the nerve to stand each day berating the prime minister for not attending to the aboriginal women.
In fact, at the aboriginal ceremony in the HOC, an aboriginal woman in full tradition attire looked directly at the prime minister thanking him for acknowleging the women’rights which the other parties refuse to acknowledge.

I wouldn’t worry about that in the least because the “head” of the LPOC(and I include those Toronto Puppet-masters simply don’t get it. It’s not the party it’s the leader and what that leader thinks the LPOC stands for. Perhaps instead of putting their advice on TV or newspapers those cheerleading Iffy media-types might consider writing Ignatieff a postcard. He may understand those better?

    More questions:

When are the Liberal leadership debts supposed to be paid off? Does Dion still owe $700,000. How much do Martha-Hall, Kennedy, leBlanc, etc. owe.

Are there any consequences at all if they do not pay back these private “loans” (as in from big money behind the scenes). Can they only be paid off by a maxiumum of $1100 per donor? HOW are they going about raising the money?
Can the Liberal party pay off the loans for them or will htey have to go to the banks and get real “loans” and be personally responsible.

Does this loophole still exist? And, if these people have outstanding ele3ction debt why are they will allowed to run for office before they are paid off?
Or, does Election Canada and the silent media look the other way (don’t ask-don’t tell) because they are Liberals?

    Anybody have answers?

  41. Lorraine says:

Hang on to your wallets Canada – Ignatieff is thinking BIG thoughts again with YOUR money.
So, who is going to pay for this train? How much will it cost? WHEN is this supposed to happen? The debate has been going on for a decade about the Calgary/Edmonton high speed train – the price taqg is in the billions; loandowners along the route are furious is it happens; safety at intersections a huge problem and cost recoupment pretty well not until the NEXT century if at all.

When trying to imagine a Mikhail Igneutiev comparative chart-breaker, all I’m picturing is a murdered version of Alice Cooper’s “Elected”…. “I WANNA BE ELECTED!” But oh… Sorry… That song was to do with the United States of America, wasn’t it? “No connection” there, is there? Did they ever conduct an honest election in Russia? They do in Canada… Another reason why the Igneutered One will find no potency here, and no Liebral fertility drug can help.
