In his June 28th column, Lorrie Goldstein focused on the ‘cozy relationships‘ involved in the Green Movement. Specifically he was referring to Tom Adams’ YouTube video “Green Energy Act Paradox”.
Lorrie summarizes Tom Adams’ observations:
…He describes the “cosy relationship” that exists among governments that want power, energy companies that want profits and environmental organizations that want more renewable energy, but also consulting fees and government funding.
The way it works is governments hand out money to environmental organizations, who consult with and for energy companies, who together advise the government on what green energy laws should look like, and who then praise the government — ad nauseam — for the legislation they helped design when the government unveils it.
And who are the losers in this neat little drama, you ask?
Why, the public, of course, who are increasingly being presented with so-called “green” legislation in which all the key decisions have been made behind closed doors, long before the so-called public consultations begin…
Adams and Goldstein aren’t the only ones noticing this symbiotic relationship.
Back in early March, Terence Corcoran exposed the same bed partners:
Who’s pushing for all this? Not the people. The major backers of green power tax-and-grab regimes are hundreds of businesses that stand to collect billions in subsidies and tax benefits from solar, wind and other alternative energy forms.
Business groups, with major lobbying and legal backing, are in cahoots with green activists, who, in turn, are sleeping with government bureaucrats and politicians.
Let’s follow some money. There’s the Ontario Green Energy Act Alliance, the major lobbying effort behind the new green police state. It self-describes its origins: “The Ontario Sustainable Energy Association (OSEA), together with other leading trade associations, environmental groups, First Nations, developers, manufacturers, farmers and landowners, is initiating a campaign to create the Ontario Green Energy Act.”
( . . . )
…In summary, the Ontario government pays millions of dollars to environmental activists and corporate interests to lobby the Ontario government and agitate for the Green Energy Act, which act serves the interests of the agitators…
Smells a little, doesn’t it?
Meanwhile the consultation process has been ongoing regarding wind turbines with varying degrees of success and satisfaction, for example in Port Elgin and Toronto. Feedback will be accepted until July 24, 2009.
This is one of those areas where Joe Blow taxpayer might not get too excited until those wind turbines begin to negatively affect his property or health.
However we should all be concerned about these reports of cozy backscratching going on behind the scenes, with hands reaching deep into our pockets.

Tuesday Update: Springer just brought a very important article to my attention. Check it out at his blog: The truth about global warming is out there…
Smitherman rolls dice on new nuke deal – Sun Editorial:
…Ontario’s original time line to complete the new Darlington reactors by 2018 — keeping nuclear power at its current level of supplying 50% of the province’s electricity, albeit more reliably than it does at present — was wildly optimistic.
And despite denials yesterday, the longer it takes to build the new nukes, the longer it will take to close Ontario’s coal-fired energy plants, which the province has promised to do by 2014.
Nuke plants, unlike coal, don’t emit greenhouse gases or air pollution.
But they do produce nuclear waste and are fiercely opposed by the same environmental groups Premier Dalton McGuinty has been relying on to sell Ontarians on expensive wind energy and industrial wind farms...

Plastic-bag initiative fails to catch on – Post:
…The fees should not be allowed to “hide behind a green mask,” said Michael Flavell, a senior Ottawa-based trade and competition lawyer.
“This is a complex area that should be examined carefully,” Mr. Flavell stated. “The Competition Bureau must not hesitate to delve into the details of new ‘green’ initiatives to uncover their true intentions and consequences, and ensure they are not masking anti-competitive manoeuvres.”
A spokeswoman for the federal Competition Bureau responded to questions about the bylaw by saying only that “we are aware of the issue,” and said she could not comment further…

Speaking of the environment:
…Govind Rao of the Friends of Christie Pits told ctvtoronto.ca on Monday that his group sent an inquiry about what chemicals are being used to control insects and vermin at the temporary dump sites, one of which is in a hockey rink at Christie Pits, which is north of Bloor Street West and west of Christie Street…
But I thought McGuinty banned pesticides???

It’s all about the cash. Funny how the enviro-nazis always label scientists who don’t “believe” as being in the pockets of big oil.
Well Big Green probably has more money.
It is entirely about the money! Billions worth!
And none dare call it conspiracy, eh?
You know I think it was on either Glen Beck or Hannity show on Fox the other day, they were talking about the Climate Change bill that just passed the Congress down there. They said that this bill would make Al Gore the first Green billionaire. So it will make a few very rich and the rest of us worse off.
Remember what they say “follow the money”
Roger Simon.
“My liberal friends don’t want to talk about global warming anymore
All of a sudden… well, not quite all of a sudden, but recently… I have noticed my liberal friends (except for the most extreme and knee-jerk) are not very interested in discussing man-made global warming.
The subject rarely comes up and, when it does, it is passed over quickly, given only a nod. It’s as if that was last year’s – or last decade’s – fad, at the very moment the House of Representatives has been browbeaten by LaPelosita into voting for a cap-and-trade bill no known person has read, let alone understood.
Scratching my head, I watched CSPAN when John Boehner read a bit of it on the house floor. Then my local congressman Henry Waxman received his plaudits as sponsor of the bill. I wondered if, somewhere deep inside him, Henry was worried. I know he has virtually no scientific training. He has even admitted in hearings that he relies on “experts.” Doesn’t he ever wonder if he picked the wrong ones? Is he aware of accusations the EPA just suppressed a skeptical global warming report from a graduate of CalTech and MIT? (Yes, I know his MIT degree is economics, but the CalTech is physics. Henry’s degree is in poli sci from UCLA.) Oh, well, history will resolve this – or not. In the short term I suggest Waxman et al have a read of Brecht’s Galileo. [Useless. They'll probably think they're Galileo and not the reactionary prelates.-ed. You're right. My bad.]
Anyway, it’s clear that the natives are restless. According to The Hill, One Democrat was upset that his leaders would needlessly force vulnerable Dems to vote for a bill that will come back to haunt them. Mississippi Rep. Gene Taylor (D) voted against the measure that he says will die in the Senate.
“A lot of people walked the plank on a bill that will never become law,” Taylor told The Hill after the gavel came down.
It will be interesting to see whether Obama will really put his weight behind this one – or if he will let LaPelosita twist.”

Climate Change: A suppressed EPA study says old U.N. data ignore the decline in global temperatures and other inconvenient truths. Was the report kept under wraps to influence the vote on the cap-and-trade bill?
This was supposed to be the most transparent administration ever. Yet as the House of Representatives prepared to vote on the Waxman-Markey bill, the largest tax increase in U.S. history on 100% of Americans, an attempt was made to suppress a study shredding supporters’ arguments.
On Friday, the day of the vote, the Competitive Enterprise Institute said it was releasing “an internal study on climate science which was suppressed by the Environmental Protection Agency.”
In the release, the institute’s Richard Morrison said “internal EPA e-mail messages, released by CEI earlier in the week, indicate that the report was kept under wraps and its author silenced because of pressure to support the administration’s agenda of regulating carbon dioxide.”
Reading the report, available on the CEI Web site, we find this “endangerment analysis” contains such interesting items as: “Given the downward trend in temperatures since 1998 (which some think will continue until at least 2030), there is no particular reason to rush into decisions based on a scientific hypothesis that does not appear to explain most of the available data.”
What the report says is that the EPA, by adopting the United Nations’ 2007 “Fourth Assessment” report, is relying on outdated research by its Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The research, it says, is “at best three years out of date in a rapidly changing field” and ignores the latest scientific findings.
Besides noting the decline in temperatures as CO2 levels have increased, the draft report says the “consensus” on storm frequency and intensity is now “much more neutral.”"

Agree, it is all about money, our money, it has built up an entire industry on what could be a giant scam.
Wonder if we’ll ever see Gore and Suzuki put down as nothing but snake oil salesmen?
Wonder if they’ll ever be forced to apologize for creating hype and fear among school children with the blessing of their educators? The sad part of all this, there is a counter view not allowed to be aired in the schools. This is a little too close to commie style brain washing for comfort. It’s Big Al’s Sci-Fi or nothing.
Why doesn’t the government tell Ontarians the truth?
We simply don’t need the energy. It was another one of their kneejerk reactions with the specifics to be filled in later.
The wind turbines in the Port Elgin area have NEVER worked to capacity since their arrival on the scene.
That because of their half-baked ways, all those looking for employment are SOL.
Oh and if you think that this “cozy” relationship goes on only with the environment you’re kidding yourself.
Anyone recall Rocco Rossi spouting off about how Ignatieff’s ceding to PM Harper o avoid a summer election was a sign of Iggy’s great strength?
In today’s NP editorial, “Ottawa Bob” we get a slightly different perspective and closer to reality.
Republican Senator orders inquiry into suppression of report…
In light of Tom Adams’ new videos, I think it’s important to understand the mindset of these NGOs. The “Green Energy Act Alliance” pushed for legislation to eliminate proper Enviromental Assessments which would protect sensitive wildlife areas from poor siting of so-called “green” industrial complexes.
“The dire need to stop global warming with an aggressive renewable energy plan for Ontario outstrips potential damage to sensitive environmental areas”
~~~ Marion Fraser, a founding member of the Green Energy Act Alliance, told a reporter of the Sarnia Observer.
Moe A – Funny how they can twist the rules when they want to.
More info here.
The average Americans have no idea what’s in the Waxman-Markey bill.
Apparently one of the laws has something to do with upgrades you have to do to sell your house. You have to have some kind of an energy audit done, things fixed up, such as getting new windows, etc. before you can sell it. Heard that on U.S. talk radio yesterday.
Americans are suffering right now, but wait till the sh** hits the fan on this one.
It’s complete lunacy.
The thing that angers me the most, drives me nuts is that politicians, ours too, won’t even acknowledge there is dissent in this theory. They won’t even acknowledge it! What do we have to do to get them to cave even a little?? Huh?
To base major legislation like the the “Green” laws now being passed on both sides of our border on a HUGE LIE called “Global Warming” is absolutely criminal behaviour! For these actions to succeed the various Weasels who stand to make $$$$$$$$$$ off this need the general population to remain “uninformed”. Once the people find out the TRUTH this whole Scam will fold like a “cheap suit”!……..our job now is to inform our friends, neighbours and families……….”knowledge is power!”
A month after Toronto enacted a bylaw that forces businesses to charge customers 5¢ per pastic bag, other Canadian cities seem disinclined to follow suit, yet the measure continues to generate controversy.
Calgary and Hamilton have rejected similar measures and Vancouver sent such a proposal back to its legal department for further study — possibly with good reason.
Toronto’s own legal department has expressed concerns about whether the bylaw would withstand a court challenge, because it involves a municipality ordering businesses to charge a specific fee for a product.
The fact that some retail chains have decided to impose a 5¢ fee on bags outside of Toronto may also violate competition laws.
The fees should not be allowed to “hide behind a green mask,” said Michael Flavell, a senior Ottawa-based trade and competition lawyer.
“Scared Silly About Global Warming
By Bjorn Lomborg
The continuous presentation of scary stories about global warming in the popular media makes us unnecessarily frightened. Even worse, it terrifies our kids.
Al Gore famously depicted how a sea-level rise of 20 feet (six meters) would almost completely flood Florida, New York, Holland, Bangladesh, and Shanghai, even though the United Nations estimates that sea levels will rise 20 times less than that, and do no such thing.
When confronted with these exaggerations, some of us say that they are for a good cause, and surely there is no harm done if the result is that we focus even more on tackling climate change. A similar argument was used when George W. Bush’s administration overstated the terror threat from Saddam Hussein’s Iraq.
But this argument is astonishingly wrong. Such exaggerations do plenty of harm. Worrying excessively about global warming means that we worry less about other things, where we could do so much more good.
We focus, for example, on global warming’s impact on malaria ― which will be to put slightly more people at risk in 100 years ― instead of tackling the half-billion people suffering from malaria today with prevention and treatment policies that are much cheaper and dramatically more effective than carbon reduction would be.
Exaggeration also wears out the public’s willingness to tackle global warming. If the planet is doomed, people wonder, why do anything? A record 54 percent of American voters now believe the news media make global warming appear worse than it really is.”
Dr. Mitchell Taylor is a Canadian.
…-
“Bearly true
The Telegraph describes how a polar bear expert has been banned from attending a conference in his field in Copenhagen because his views are inimical to the orthoxy on “global warming”. The news story says:
Dr Mitchell Taylor has been researching the status and management of polar bears in Canada and around the Arctic Circle for 30 years, as both an academic and a government employee. More than once since 2006 he has made headlines by insisting that polar bear numbers, far from decreasing, are much higher than they were 30 years ago. … Taylor agrees that the Arctic has been warming over the last 30 years. But he ascribes this not to rising levels of CO2 – as is dictated by the computer models of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and believed by his PBSG colleagues – but to currents bringing warm water into the Arctic from the Pacific and the effect of winds blowing in from the Bering Sea. …
Dr Taylor had obtained funding to attend this week’s meeting of the PBSG, but this was voted down by its members because of his views on global warming. The chairman, Dr Andy Derocher, a former university pupil of Dr Taylor’s, frankly explained in an email (which I was not sent by Dr Taylor) that his rejection had nothing to do with his undoubted expertise on polar bears: “it was the position you’ve taken on global warming that brought opposition”.
Dr Taylor was told that his views running “counter to human-induced climate change are extremely unhelpful”. His signing of the Manhattan Declaration – a statement by 500 scientists that the causes of climate change are not CO2 but natural, such as changes in the radiation of the sun and ocean currents – was “inconsistent with the position taken by the PBSG”.”
“What may actually be on the downward path is rationality.”
I’ve been increasingly concerned with that these days. That thesis explains as much in the third world as it does in the west.
What worries me most about the widespread faith in “global warming” (no wait; I guess it’s now “climate change”) are the consequences to society when nature acts with complete disregard for our beautiful theories, which nature is wont to do. How do we as a society react when it becomes widely accepted that all the most well known scientific and academic leaders were completely wrong, and most were corrupt? Sadly, I doubt that most will simply wish to learn from their errors and admit that they were duped. I fear it is much more likely that it will be science and rationality itself that will be rejected as having failed.
The consequences of an irrational, unscientific majority living in the detritus of a technologically advanced world is too dystopian to contemplate. But I fear that is where we are headed.”
“B.C.’s carbon tax to jump on 1st anniversary”
“Recent polls have found that while Canadians support fighting global warming, they’re split when it comes to paying a carbon tax to battle climate change.”
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-columbia/story/2009/06/30/bc-gas-tax-increase.html
Follow the money and find out why Mr. Suzuki and his friends curiously supported the Liberals over the NDP on the carbon tax/offsetting:
First, this announcement on June 3rd by VANOC here, which actually caught my eye and prompted some investigation:
http://www.vancouversun.com/Vanoc+reaches+deal+help+stage+carbon+neutral+Games/1659349/story.html
“The Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee has announced an estimated $5-million partnership with B.C.-based carbon offset firm Offsetters Clean Technology to help it stage a carbon-neutral Olympics next year.”
“The David Suzuki Foundation has estimated the Games will produce about 110,000 tonnes of direct carbon emissions and another 220,000 tonnes of indirect emissions from air travel.”
So Vanoc has given Offsetters $5MM for offsetting the Olympics and David Suzuki an undisclosed amount to measure the carbon emissions. Actually, this is through the brand new Crown Corporation Pacific Carbon Trust, seen here:
http://www.pacificcarbontrust.ca/Portals/0/Pacific%20Carbon%20Trust%20Purchases%20First%20Set%20of%20Offsets.pdf
“The Pacific Carbon Trust (PCT) signed an agreement with Offsetters Clean Technology Inc. to purchase high-quality emission offsets to address climate change in B.C., Finance Minister Colin Hansen announced today.”
…
“The projects were sourced by industry aggregator (wholesaler) Offsetters Clean Technology Inc., an early entrant to this innovative arena in Canada.”
…
“Budget 2008 provided the Pacific Carbon Trust (PCT) with $24 million in funding over four years to cover the cost of starting up the new Crown corporation, building a solid portfolio of credible offsets from B.C.-based projects, and developing its capacity and expertise to meet growing demand, while supporting industry growth in B.C. “
“Last October, the PCT released a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to source offset suppliers. The five-year purchase agreement with Offsetters supports clean energy innovations in five projects. Over the five years the projects provide the ability to offset 330,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. “
Oh, there’s Offsetters Clean Technology again!
Let’s have a look at them, in particular this man, James Tansey:
“James co-founded Offsetters in 2005, and currently sits as its President. James Tansey is the Executive Director of the Centre for Sustainability and Social Innovation and Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia’s Sauder School of Business.”
The Centre for Sustainability and Social Innovation ? Sauder School of Business? UBC?
http://www.sauder.ubc.ca/FacultyResearch/ResearchCentres/CentreforSustainabilityandSocialInnovation/AboutUs/default.htm
As an aside (this is a whole other discussion):
“The Centre focuses on four key strategic ares:
1. The Incubation of Social Innovation
2. Research in Social Innovation
3. Strategic Corporate Social Responsibility
4. Enhancing Human Capital”
How cute…Incubation of Social Innovation
And from the Centre’s annual report:
“Over the last 24 months we have been working on a project to examine the role of international carbon markets in supporting development goals in Canada and abroad. As part of this activity we have continued to support Offsetters Clean Technology Inc., …”
He’s supporting himself!!!!! But so is the government:
“In January 2008, the Premier of British Columbia announced the establishment of a $94 million endowment to provide long-term support to the four research universities through the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS).”
It goes way further too, the Centre is linked to Appleton Charitable Foundation and in turn the Clinton Foundation.
And, look who is on the Suzuki Foundation’s Honorary Board
The amazing thing about these different alliance groups is they have basically become the lobby group for the wind industry. And they are doing it with government money. The government is effectively supplying NGO’s with money to influence their decisions. Where is the support for home-grown solutions that keep jobs and technological advances in Canada? Where is the truth about wind being highly over-valued considering it can only produce at about 20% its capacity? Why are people like David Suzuki, who are abundantly clear that all they care about is the environment, being allowed to have a massive influence on our ENERGY policy while we ignore groups like the Power Workers Union who built and maintain our energy grid in Ontario? The pragmatic solution is being ignored and instead a season of political pandering and huge wind industry quickies is taking place, at the expense of a eco-guilty public. We need to increase our nuclear power capacity, we also need to protect and maintain our Canadian nuclear institutions. If you support keeping it Canadian go and sign the petition here.
