I am thrilled that Tim Hudak has been elected the new leader of the Ontario PC’s. I now see hope for Ontario.
CP24 was reporting that much of Christine Elliott’s support went to Hudak. If that is true, it is an excellent sign. Both the red and blue Tories need to come together and work on a vision for our province so that we can improve the economy and create jobs.
I’m tired of living in a have-not Nanny State where the Premier whines and blames everyone else.
I want my Ontario back.
And I want Tim Hudak to be Premier of my Ontario.

Update: Darryl Wolk was a strong Klees supporter, but he’s totally behind the new leader. I am very impressed. This is a good sign.
830 days until the Dalton Era Ends. We are United and Strong.

It may be wishful thinking but I have a sneaky feeling that Dalton-baby, may start reacting very quickly to this leadership choice.
A small c Conservative, is exactly what the Dr. ordered for Ontario.
Bye, bye Dalton-baby and take that damn Toronto mayor with you! Ontario deserves better, much, much better.
Congrats, you guys! I am very excited for you all and can imagine the adrenaline rush must be wonderful with the new inspiration, that you are feeling.
Thanks Bec! I agree. We now have a clear alternative here instead of just Liberal and Liberal-Lite.
Well I have no idea whether Hudak will appeal to the voters of Ontario 2 years from now. But congrats to Hudak and his supporters in their victory today.
Of course, it is very unlikely that I will ever vote for a Conservative. But I do like the only thing I know about Hudak’s policy which is to abolish the Ontario Human Right’s Commission. However, I don’t think such a policy will gain traction with the public even with high profile cases like Levant and Steyn. However, two years is a long time in politics.
But I do like the only thing I know about Hudak’s policy which is to abolish the Ontario Human Right’s Commission.
Actually, Tim wants the Tribunals abolished, and therein lies the challenge – communication.
Well that is disappointing in my opinion. The whole commission is not needed, does more harm than good, and should be tossed, not just the HRT. Scrapping the HRT does nothing towards the OHRC desire for a National Press Council. It should be abolished.
Way to go Ontario!! One step at a time.
I truly hope that the Ontario “right” can coalesce behind your new leader and offer the voters a good old fashion conservative platform. Win, lose or draw the message must be consistent and offer hope, prosperity and individual responsibility and freedom. Good luck to the “Conservative Party of Ontario” and “Premier” Hudak. The Left coast salutes you!!

Amen joanne!
Scrapping the HRT does nothing towards the OHRC desire for a National Press Council.
What???
Congratulatios Joanne and Sandy, I was for Hudak just on your say so. He has two years to rebuild the Party. To all those members that didn’t vote, thanks for voting for Hudak by your abstensions. Also glad to see that your party was not taken over by the ndp/libs and the worst guy was put in, aka Alberta.
Other good news, 2 senators are finished today.

Really? Details please.

Google, senators date of retirement. Only one was finished today, but 2 more on July 12. Those three were Brian appointments. So no change there. But there are some that will retire before fall and they are liberals. Let’s hope the PM makes those appointment asap. That was probably one of the reasons libs wanted an election. Those lib senators will have to show up for all votes now.
“What???”

The point is that abolishing the HRT will not be enough to protect rights like free speech from the ORHC. I think that it will be very difficult for Hudak to run on abolishing the HRT. But I think that it will be even more difficult for him to run by trying to convince ontarians that HRTs are out of control and actually infringing on our rights, but then at the same time say that we should keep the ORHC who are in fact the very ones who have led to the HRTs being out of control and infringing on people’s rights.
Joanne @ #9.
It’s contained in the Moon Report which was written on behalf of Lynch.
HRCs/tribunals: Fire. Them. All.
…-
“Newspapers and news magazines should seek to revitalize the provincial/regional press councils and ensure that identifiable groups are able to pursue complaints if they feel they have been unfairly represented in mainstream media.
If this does not happen, consideration should [>>>>>] be given to the statutory creation of a national press council with compulsory membership. This national press council would have the authority to determine whether a newspaper or magazine has breached professional standards and order the publication of the press council’s decision.
A newspaper is not simply a private participant in public discourse; it is an important part of the public sphere where discussions about the affairs of the community takes place. As such it carries a responsibility to portray the different groups that make up the Canadian community fairly and without discrimination.”

Joanne, I think MaryT was referring to mandatory retirement.
Wayward, according to the Hudak camp, the HRC is the educational component, whereas the HRT is the litigation component.
This is how it was explained to me:
…Tim is not proposing to eliminate the Ontario Human Rights Commission, the organization tasked with raising awareness about discrimination. Tim’s position has remained the same as when he announced it on May 12th.
Tim would reform this institution and refocus it toward its original mandate. Tim is proposing that we scrap the Human Rights Tribunal, the quasi-judicial, parallel system of justice that does not operate according to due process of the law. Tim would move these cases to real courts with real judges operating in accordance with real laws, in a construct similar to Domestic Violence and Family Law courts.
It is a distinction not often clearly made by the mainstream media, but an important one…
I grant you, it will take some communication. However, we have until 2011.
thru the summer there are 2 liberals and thus a change of 4 – 2 libs out 2 CPC in. The world turns as it should.
#16, you are right. I just hope the PM finds some young men/women to serve. There are still some senators there appointed by PET.
Several Mulroney era Progressive Conservatives did not sit in the Senate as Conservatives. Instead they were Independents and since they were of the Joe Clark/Mulroney ilk they most likely vote with the Liberals.
I wonder (hope) some of these old boys are the ones to be replaced.
Wayward Son – I wish more non-Conservative commenters were like you – your comment was respectful and non-insulting. I respect that. Far too many non-Conservative commenters (and I imagine there are some Conservative commenters) who come on a Conservative blog and do nothing but diss and insult. Thank you for being logical, forthright, and respectful.
As for me, I will always vote Conservative but I do respect my fellow Canadians’ right to vote how they wish.
I hit the “submit” button too soon. Wayward Son, have you read Ezra Levant’s book Shakedown? To say that it was an eye-opener for me is a huge understatement. His book convinced me that we do not have free speech and that scares the heck out of me – as well as infuriates me.
We’re off to a good start to oust McGuinty, that is assuming he has the gall to run again!
East @ #21 – Agreed.
And I think all the PC candidates believed that the HRC and HRT need to be reigned in to some degree.
Good. Now we can take ontario back.Ill be paying attention, especially to the HRC.
