Sorry Iggy

Canadians just don’t feel the rage.

But keep on trying. I’m sure you can milk this Lisa Raitt thing for a bit longer.

    More from CTV*: Liberal Ad$Scam.

Ad$SCam keeps on giving to Liberal Iggy.

    >>> More names of perps to come: will Stephane Dion be among the names? Jean Chretien? Paul Martin Jr.? Denis Coderre? ?????
    …-

*”However, Corbeil says he will reveal who profited from the scam, suggesting more names will come out in connection with the scandal that helped to bring down Paul Martin’s minority Liberal government in 2006.

    Two separate scams

In 1997, Corbeil took a $50,000 Liberal donation from a businessman south of Montreal on a promise to clear up red tape in a complicated land deal. The businessman had wanted to expand a quarry in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu.

The fraud charge stems from Corbeil signing for Liberal bills that he knew were fake and then funneling $117,000 to companies owned by the late Joe Morselli, a onetime Liberal organizer. Corbeil was arrested and charged in April of last year.

A public inquiry found the sponsorship program gave $150 million to Liberal-friendly ad agencies in Quebec for little or no work while the Grits were in power.”

“Corbeil admitted that back in 1997 he accepted 50-thousand dollars in cash in an envelope from Réal Ouimet, a businessman who wanted to buy federal land to expand his quarry in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Corbeil saying he could make it happen.

“He [Corbeil] just told Mr. Ouimet that he would talk to the right person in Ottawa,” said crown prosecutor Josée Fontaine.”

Access request gets poor reception at CBC

    Updated 4 hours ago

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. should know better. After all, unlike most other Crown corporations, the CBC is regularly involved in filing Access to Information requests. It knows about transparency and timeliness.
Yet as a Sun Media investigation published this week reveals, the CBC has failed to live up to its obligations under the legislation, and is dragging its feet.
Access to Information legislation has applied to federal departments since 1983, but was expanded in 2007 to include Crown corporations such as Canada Post, Telefilm Canada, Atomic Energy of Canada, VIA Rail and the CBC.
With the help of Ottawa lawyer Michel Drapeau, an expert on the legislation, Sun Media began filing applications to several Crown corporations, including 399 to the CBC. Today, he’s going the federal court, hoping to get help in forcing the CBC to disclose more information requested between Sept. 1 and Dec. 12, 2007.
    Let’s hope he’s successful.
For its part, the CBC says it has been overwhelmed by the sheer number of requests, and is working diligently to satisfy them.
But even if that’s true, is it really an excuse? Shouldn’t the organization have been prepared when the legislation kicked in?
Meanwhile, even if it was legitimately unprepared, couldn’t it at least have responded in writing, saying it was working to satisfy the requests, as it is required to do by the act?
It did neither, the result of which was that the federal information commissioner granted the CBC an extension in April 2008 of one year. Only last week, a full year plus one month after the extension, did Drapeau receive responses to all his requests. In many cases, those are responses only — not necessarily the information requested.
Others, meanwhile, were filled with exemptions and had the contents blanked out. Was it legitimate proprietary information? The optics are not good.
This, remember, from an organization the taxpayers fund to the tune of roughly $1 billion a year. If the CBC has nothing to hide, it should forget about editing and get down to the real work of being transparent and timely.

Is Ignatieff that arrogant, blind, or stupid that he cannot see that it is HE who is on probation? He is a completely untested entity, a stranger in the country of his passport, an island within his own party…one false move and his own party will most likely bring him down. Does he really think that his “brother” Rae will sit quietly on the sidelines forever?

Does he think that LeBlanc and his supporters are going to be content with an old dude at the helm?

Sorry, Michael – you are on probation and, so far, your report card is fairly dismal. Doesn’t play well with other children, cannot make up his mind, never accepts responsibility, always appears angry…oh, the list goes on and on.

Steve, never mind. I found a few things.

    Bruce, that sounds intriguing…

  10. Lorraine says:

Do you think the Lisa Raitt binder story has legs?

According to Bob Fife at CTV just now he said that it was up to JOURNALISTS to keep this story alive and they will just report on the opposition’s hammering the conservatives about it.

How about that? Bob Fife CONFIRMING collusion with the Liberals.

    Heh.

  11. Joanne says:

According to Bob Fife at CTV just now he said that it was up to JOURNALISTS to keep this story alive

    Are you kidding me?

Fife was probably waiting for this story to break the way a kid looks forward to Christmas morning.

He may be disappointed after the gifts are all unwrapped.

  13. Michael Harkov says:

“I call your Lisa Raitt and raise you a Benoit Corbeil.”

Mr. Corbeil says he has more names he wants to reveal. Nice. Just when the Liberals thought they had a new scandal on their hands, their biggest one of all keeps getting bigger. :D

  14. Ontario Girl says:

Don Newman said the Liberals will make sure the story has legs. Then he said ” they had someone to take the fall for the minister this time”…”A cat among pigions”.

He also said “It was impressive that a rooky minister handled the opposition by herself”.

Amazing that all the while Iggy was showing his phoney outrage in QP, there in the background clapping and smiling was Ruby Nannygate(who didn’t resign).

  15. LC Bennett says:

The public is so desensitized to political foul-ups that only journalists would bother to keep such stories alive. At best the public might have a “tsk, tsk, tsk, sigh” attitude.

Hey, if CTV wants to waste its time and money causing viewers to tune out, turn off and look elsewhere then why would the blogging community want to stop them.

It’s funny Stuttering Bob on PP last night said PM Harper was going to quebec to kiss and make up with Charest over dinner. It turns out to be way more then that. Why am I am surprised that what the PM is actualy doing is way different then what Bobby boy said..

  17. MaryT says:

Big fundraiser in Quebec for Iggy. How much are the tickets and how many were sold. Will giggles say that most of the tickets were given away to homeless people. After al they deserve a good meal. Please note that Codere got some of that adscam money for his riding.
Is the PM going to the D Day celebrations. Perhaps Fife thought he would be out of the country when he broke this story.
When Holland and Jennings resign for stealing boxes of documents and parading them thru the street, when IRuby resigns for whatever, and Codere for supporting terrorists, then and ony then can Lisa consider resigning.
According to some comments at ctv, some people think that the government wanted to get the message out that the liberals have squandered billions over the years at AECL. The only way to do that was to appear to leave a secret binder. Again, what happened to the binder and why were the pages returned in a grocery bag.

  18. Liz J says:

Strawberry Blondie Fife, what’s to say eh?
It’s up to journalists to keep stories alive, well tell us something we don’t know!

What’s new in the nannygate affair? Bollywood Ruby is sitting in her seat in the HOC all made up for the cameras, smiling sweetly and SILENT. Nothing here, move along.

Ditto the Tar Baby slur attempt, it was looking worse for the Liberal desperadoes, Goodale and Jennings to pursue it than it was for the MP they were attempting to smear. Sooo, we simply won’t mention it any more.

Well in that case Joanne since the Fife who is a journalist should get on the ball in full steam revealing to canadians the ADSCAM, MISSING MONEY, DRASTIC CUTS MADE TO CREATE A PHONEY SURLUS-WHAT NEXT? OH YEAH, HOW ABOUT THE FAMOUS LIBERALS WHO GUTTED THE E.I OF $54BILLION AND AMONG OTHERS THE MISSION MILLIONS OF DOLLARS WHICH THE REFUSE TO RETURN.
This and more should keep those so call journalists on their toes. like he said “it is the journalists duty to report.”
If he was a journalist and not a liberal puppet to dance around with. take my word for it, the liberals would not be in parliament as we speak or for that matter will be reduced to one seat or none. especially not after when FIFE finishes reporting on them (liberals).

WE ARE WAITING FIFE! IF YOU CAN’T DO THE JOURNALIST JOB-WE WILL, YOU CAN COUNT ON THAT ONE.

Make sure you write CTV about Bob Fife – I wrote asking how come every 5 minutes we had his “mug” on CTV Newsnet with an update on Lisa – and with his liberal Ruby – I never saw him once….. I asked what their sponsors would think if they knew their reporters were only interested in bashing one Political Party in Canada……….did they not need our support as well! If they want to be a liberal supporter – say so!

  22. Ontario Girl says:

CBC Don Newman politics has Jim Travesty and Daniel Lessard come out of mothballs for the brooooodcast. Travesty said “this speaks to the modesty of Canadian “secrets”. “The real problem is an unaccountable minister and PRIME MINISTER”. “I have a sense she(the aide) was thrown under the bus…passing the buck”.

Sidekick Lessard said” Both ministers should of been fired” and finished by saying ” Lawrence Cannon is extremly WEAK”.

Newman finished off his GLEE by saying “She is too young to go to the senate.”

This story only has legs for the Liberal CBC & CTV .Strange, Newman doesn’t say CTV…just says another network….???

  23. LC Bennett says:

Take it easy on Fife. Having this story literally fall into his lap is probably the biggest scoop he’s had since the Liberal government stopped leaking stories to him. I am sure he will defend the nuke-gate scandal and his journalistic integrity vigorously despite the public giving it a big Ho-Hum.

  24. paulsstuff says:

Fife just made a big mistake. He admitted photocopying the documents twice, one set was given to the aid who picked up the original documents, and the second copy went to CTV’s lawyers. He says CTV will declare client-solicitor privelage.

This could very well blow up in Fife and CTV’s faces.

  25. Lorraine says:

Alert to all guests at CTV:

Bob Fife admits that if you take personal belongings or documents to the CTV Green Room (which is where guest’s property is supposed to be secure when they are on air) that he and other journalists will snoop and report on what they find there.

They will not alert you if you inadvertantly leave something personal and private behind.Your Blackberry, purse, binders, briefcase, etc.

Instead, they will go through it and photocopy it and if they can spin a good story they will broadcast it.

Fife said if they find something at their offices they WILL go through it because THEY are JOURNALISTS.

Mere mortal ethics do not apply.

  26. Bruce says:

    Me thinks that Booby Fife has really stepped in it this time;

    Official Secrets Act;

    Miscellaneous Offences

    Wrongful communication, etc., of information

    4. (1) Every person is guilty of an offence under this Act who, having in his possession or control any secret official code word, password, sketch, plan, model, article, note, document or information that relates to or is used in a prohibited place or anything in a prohibited place, or that has been made or obtained in contravention of this Act, or that has been entrusted in confidence to him by any person holding office under Her Majesty, or that he has obtained or to which he has had access while subject to the Code of Service Discipline within the meaning of the National Defence Act or owing to his position as a person who holds or has held office under Her Majesty, or as a person who holds or has held a contract made on behalf of Her Majesty, or a contract the performance of which in whole or in part is carried out in a prohibited place, or as a person who is or has been employed under a person who holds or has held such an office or contract,

    (a) communicates the code word, password, sketch, plan, model, article, note, document or information to any person, other than a person to whom he is authorized to communicate with, or a person to whom it is in the interest of the State his duty to communicate it;

    (b) uses the information in his possession for the benefit of any foreign power or in any other manner prejudicial to the safety or interests of the State;

    (c) retains the sketch, plan, model, article, note, or document in his possession or control when he has no right to retain it or when it is contrary to his duty to retain it or fails to comply with all directions issued by lawful authority with regard to the return or disposal thereof; or

    Punishment

    (a) an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term of not more than 14 years; or

Let’s make darn sure that the trolls don’t distract from the mess the Liberals and their coalition leader is going to be in potentially.

Remind me again why CTV and Power Play is your news channel of choice? Because all I learn about here is why I’m glad I didn’t waste time giving CTV my viewership.

  30. MaryT says:

Perhaps their out is the fact some of those pages had draft embossed on the page.
Would 14 years in jail make Fyfe too old for the Senate.
Funny how every time the libs and media try to create a scandal, bloggers bring out all the past sins of the liberals.
Then there is usually some adscam case in the court at the same time. Adscam, and the possibility of more names coming out beats lost documents from 2007 to ?. Who was in charge of AECL in 2007.
Also today, somebody posted a list of all nuclear sites or something, in error, in the US.

Then she back tracked and said they haven’t seen the “HIGHLY SENSITIVE ” info left lying around. This is the same “DOCTOR” who had mechanical problems with Liberal cars and black paint on fenches in the last election …which she was losing, untill she got the manufactured sympathy vote. At what age, then, Mr. Wannabe PM, are citizens accountable for their own actions or mistakes?

  41. paulsstuff says:

Joanne, just sent you an email. You should read it asap.

  42. C.C. says:

frmgrl – “what has happened to real journalism in this country, it’s gone to pot?”

no it hasn’t you’re just watching crap.
there’s more info. in this one blog that’s better researched than either CBC or CTV.

What does it tell you that in a country with what?…how many million people that CTV could only muster 100,000 supporters for its local TV?

It means no one but you know who is watching.

re: Ignatieff “never make a 26 year old accountable..” Hey Michael if the LPOC throws you under the bus, maybe Ontario Minister of Education can get you a job pushing the “no-fail” policy that educators and parents are fighting against at the secondary panel.

Actually, I’m thinking maybe Mr. Ignatieff’s a graduate of that program himself.

Remember that Corbeil’s going to sing like a canary.

  47. East of Eden says:

There is something fishy about this Raitt thing. The aide who resigned comes from a very Liberal family. And, it was she who accidently left the material behind and who subsequently resigned. My questions is this: why was she carrying this material, anyway? Something smells fishy to me – I could be wrong, but the smell of fish is getting very strong here.

  48. Joanne says:

The aide who resigned comes from a very Liberal family.

How do you know that, East?

  49. Liz J says:

In equating Lisa Raitt’s case with Bernier’s would they be considering the CTV media people to be as vindictive as a woman scorned?

It’s really scary when Ministers of the government can’t trust news media to return documents inadvertently left behind post haste. It’s the stuff of banana republics. Here we have bands of media marauders out to GET the government at any opportunity, if none arrives they’ll spin the facts.

  50. Liz J says:

East, do you suppose we could be dealing with infiltrators?

Nothing should surprise us when it comes to the Liberals and their extreme lust for power.

As the PM says, he’s had three elections in four years, calling another one now would cause more instability.

Of course calling one now would supposedly be over EI, that would be their excuse but all they really care about is getting power. The country, the economy be damned.

  51. Ruth says:

“Jasmine MacDonnell has worked as press secretary to two Conservative cabinet ministers, but she comes from a Liberal family.

She is the daughter of Ralston MacDonnell, who is head of a well-connected Nova Scotia engineering company, and a fundraiser for Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff”
    This smells.

  52. Ruth says:

I bet those papers were left behind on purpose now that I read all this in the Star. How could a fundraiser for Iggy care about keeping anything confidential. She needed to get fired.

  53. biff says:

I’ve got a post up on this and also noting its scandal season in the media, following Iggy’s cue.

Back to headlines about nefarious cartoon birds and black humour one-liners, here:

    http://theplaceofbiff.blogspot.com/2009/06/rocking-tories.html

  54. east of eden says:

Hi Joanne – it’s a sidebar to the story in the Star:

    THE AIDE: JASMINE MACDONNELL

Jasmine MacDonnell has worked as press secretary to two Conservative cabinet ministers, but she comes from a Liberal family.

She is the daughter of Ralston MacDonnell, who is head of a well-connected Nova Scotia engineering company, and a fundraiser for Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff.

The 26-year-old MacDonnell had been the press secretary to former natural resources minister Gary Lunn.

His demotion to minister of state for sport in the last cabinet shuffle is widely viewed as punishment for his mishandling of an extended shutdown of the Chalk River nuclear reactor in late 2007 that sparked a global shortage of medical isotopes.

However, MacDonnell stayed on when Lisa Raitt got the job.

She and Raitt had another reason for kinship – both are Nova Scotia natives.

MacDonnell had an easy relationship with reporters, who lauded her as competent and cheerful, a professional who was loyal to her ministers.

Here is the link to the story in The Star:

    http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/article/645348

  55. east of eden says:

Liz J – I would never make an accusation but it does seem kind of odd, given the sidebar in The Star.

  56. Joanne says:

Wow. Thanks for the info East & Ruth.

  57. Joanne says:

So Raitt trusted her in spite of her family’s political connections…

  58. Ruth says:

“Raitt trusted her” Guess she shouldn’t have. Funny this all happened right now, cause isn’t there a big fundraiser for Iggy in Montreal coming along soon.

  59. east of eden says:

Joanne: It sure looks that way. It makes me want to hurl. I hate to point fingers but since Chretien retired, our politics sure have become dirty and for some reason, the dirt always seems to lead back to somebody who is somehow connected to the LPC. That’s my perception of the situation and it makes me sick. I am so thankful that our PM is a man of honour, dignity, and class.

  60. Joanne says:

Well, let’s please be very careful not to blame anyone for something that hasn’t been proven. Tim Powers actually spoke very highly of her in his column.

    New post up, BTW.

  61. Joanne says:

cause isn’t there a big fundraiser for Iggy in Montreal coming along soon.

    Ruth, I think it’s tonight.

  62. Liz J says:

Wonder if Iggy irked her allegedly Liberal supporting family by implying at 26 years old she’d be less than capable?

  63. Joanne says:

Good question, Liz. In any case, I’m sure Iggy will try to find a spot for his fundraiser’s daughter in the OLO.

  64. paulsstuff says:

What if it was a 26 year old nanny?

  65. Liz J says:

Oh, so Iggy will be trolling for bucks in Montreal.

He’ll be a real big ticket, all smarmy and feeling their pain. It’ll go something like ‘that Harper guy has no idea about Quebec and Quebecers’,the arts should be funded to the max, yada, yada.

Wonder if he’ll tell them what HE really said about Quebec in one of his now famous spews we now have on truth ads?

  66. Joanne says:

Speaking of Iggy, this is a great letter:

Since Paul Walton is such a huge fan of Michael Ignatieff, could he write a column on Iggy’s policies, because no one else seems to know what they are.

He voted for the Conservative budget, urged them to spend more on stimulus and EI, then dumped on them for creating a deficit.

He threatens to bring the government down, but doesn’t seem to know that the socialists and separatists bailed out of the coalition.

He tells Albertans how proud he is of the oilsands, but tells Quebecers that it’s a “basement industry” that needs an environmental cleanup.

During the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict in Lebanon, he said he “wasn’t losing sleep” over the Israeli bombing of a Lebanese village, then later accused Israel of “war crimes.”

Is this what Walton means by a “profound knowledge and experience in international affairs?”

He recently sent Liberal MP John McKay, an Evangelical Christian, out to hold discussions with church groups. He claims he wouldn’t mix church and state but why should we believe him?

However, I don’t see a problem with Iggy having spent his most productive years in other countries — the problem is that the Liberals lured him back hoping to ride his coattails back to power.
