Won’t you be my Canadian Neighbour?

Reader reaction at Calgary Grit’s place to Iggy’s rebuttal video (H/T CC):

“He looks like he’s on the set of Antiques Road Show.
- Jason Bo Green

“Zzzz. He talks in the same stilted style as Galen Weston Jr. in the TV ads...”
- Nuna D. Above

Or how about Mr. Rogers?

Update: Score one for the Tories with attack adsLes MacPherson of the Star Phoenix (H/T Frmgrl):

...Conservatives remember very well. They were kept on the defensive and off the scoreboard for 13 years. Then came the sponsorship scandal, a costly Liberal giveaway. Now it’s the Conservatives aggressively forechecking, and listen to the crybabies calling for a roughing penalty.

If anything, these Conservative attack ads are mild, and the issues they raise, legitimate. There’s nothing wrong, of course, with a Canadian seeking fame and fortune outside the country for 34 years. The question is whether this is an appropriate resume for a Canadian prime minister…

Oh, I like that guy!

Also Sandy has some additions to her Harper Government Record Archive, in case anyone from the Tory war room is looking for ideas for more truth or contrast ads.

I kept waiting for him to pull out a Sham-Wow and tell us why we should buy one.

  2. Bruce says:

Why is it that Iggy always has that constipated look on his face?

And if that is best response that the Liberals can com up with, posting it on YouTube for free nonetheless, then they are in a deep, deep pile of Puffin Droppings.

    I like what Fred said;

“it is going to be a Fish-Barrel-Shoot campaign.”

  3. wilson says:

    The ‘response’ is so lame.
So Iffy’s time sprent abroad was a good look at Canada thru other people’s eyes?
And are new Canadians less Canadian?
His time spent gaining international fame was suppose to be his ticket to becoming PM…

That’s the best they can do, and they’ve had 3 years to figure out a response…
Proof positive Iffy and gang are still in internal disarray.

  4. Soccermom says:

Obviously they are worried about the truth ads. The truth hurts, I guess.

I consider the truth ads educational. Most Canadians don’t know anything about this man who wants to be our PM. They need to know that he spent 30+ years outside the country. THIRTY PLUS YEARS!

Five years or even ten would not make this so much of an issue. BUT THIRTY PLUS YEARS??!

Canadians need to know and have a right to know. Just as Canadians needed to see Stephane Dion screw up during that interview and ask for a few do-overs. We need to know.

  5. ed says:

Bruce, you’re a riot. Keep it up!! LOL

There are more holes in the Liberal commentary than there are in that particular type of Swiss cheese.

More Liberal “stupid talk.” Iggy, keep talking!!

Nothing personal, Iggy, but you represent that poor excuse for a federal party.

  6. Bubba Brown says:

A new Civil kind of politics? I am a little confused the ads I have seen feature Mr Ignatiff front and center. Either I am missing something or Mr Ignatiff is calling himself out for expressing obviousely deeply felt “ponderous feelings” if his own words, the thoughts he has expressed, articulated with such feeling are “attack ads”? Is Mr Ignatiff mad at himself? Will he put himself on probation? Does he ever have a position or point of view that does not change every time the wind shifts? Of course it is the Conservatives “fault” for being so “Nasty” as to point out “the pretender to the thrones” contradictions this man is a rudderless lunatic in my opinion. These ads should not be called “attack ads” but rather “public service announcements” Anyone who would anoint this man as a possible leader of this country needs their meds changed. Of course this is the same bunch that presented us with Mr Dion, who spoke english like Daffy Duck, Mr Ignatiff thinks like Daffy Duck. His “crack team” of financial advisors includes one of the people responsible for the N.E.P. Mr Ignatiff is one of the people responsible for the Coalition of Stooges. Yup he is the New “Liberal” politics alright. I don’t thin Mr Ignatiff was “abroad” for 34 years I think he was on a planet “far far away” The Conservatives are doing the job the Media is supposed tod, can you imagine the “feeding frenzy” if P M Harper was this contradictory?

  7. Bubba Brown says:

Still of my first coffee excuse typos please.

  8. Jen says:

Ignatieff has a look that looks down at you as though you are some school child-a scolding look and the canadian people say that the prime minister is scary. take a hard look at ignatieff, his looks frightens even the msm. no wonder those whimps (media) are afraid to say anything.
Remember, when Ignatieff said that he admires the way the PM handled the media-guess he is doing the same and the media loves it; as long as you are a liberal.

  9. Lorraine says:

For some reason Ignatieff gives me the heebee jeebies. It’s my Spidey sense tingling whenever I see him speak. This has nothing to do with him being a Liberal – his presence is somehow ghoulish and his voice is condescending like he is speaking down to me.
At one time from past photos he was quite handsome but now there is an unattractive meaness etched into his face.

Can’t put my finger on it but they called Stanfield the “Ugly Canadian” if you recall. At least Stanfield had a genuine smile…not a theatrical rehearsed smirk.

  10. Jen says:

PM was in Calgary to deliver infrastructure money. new highways are on the go, construction is seen everything. question is where does charest put our money meant for their infrastructure go into elsewhere.?

  11. MaryT says:

I thought they were bragging donations were flowing in and they had lots of money for a campaign etc. I think an election now would catch them very unprepared-no plan, no money, and probably no plane. Next time Layton should apply for the job as leader of the official opposition, and cancel all plans for a coalition.
If Duceppe and Layton do not start to attack Iggy, we will assume the coalition is still on the backburner.

  12. jad says:

Check out the YouTube video posted at http://www.stepehntaylor.ca on the subject. It’s a zinger!

  13. Jen says:

Joanne, our economy is turning around houses are sold, people taking their trailers out camping, our dollar is up. let’s just say, the wrong path the liberals say we are going has been going on the right path thanks to the PM and his party for hanging on there and who had no choice being the only party to endure the recession crisis without the help from the other parties because according to ignatieff, he does not want to wear the recession on his shoulders. a direct slap to us all.

To bad IGNATIEFF, ONLY THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY AND CANADIAN PEOPLE worked together during these tough times which is still ongoing but not as severe. We took measure to work with each other to find ome common ground.

  14. dillon says:

There is something missing about Ignatiev’s length of time residing in Canada. His father was a diplomat. Was he working in Canada or posted abroad. Was Ignatiev in Canada only to attend boarding school? Simple reporting by anyone who calls themself a reporter would dislose his factual history. Interview his brother.

  15. paulsstuff says:

Joanne, you realize by making that comparison you have permanently tarnished the reputation of Mr. Rogers.

  16. Calgary Junkie says:

In the final week of the 2004 campaign, the Libs carpet bombed us with “scary Harper” tv ads. This turned the campaign around for them, and helped Martin squeak through with 135 or so seats. So the Libs know very well that the kind of carpet bombing we are doing now works.

Iggy’s 90 second response is way too long, and so won’t be played on tv. Who but red kool-aid drinkers would sit through it all, without reaching for their remote control ? So the Libs need a 30-second, simple, catchy, effective response. This is a very difficult thing to do.

My sense is they will hoard their money, hope for the msm to continue running interference for them, and muddle on until around June 2010 (see Greg Weston’s article re 80+ MPs waiting for their pension-vesting, six-year anniversaries). By then, the stars should align for all the Opps to gang up on Harper.

  17. maz2 says:

Now we know what Iggy’s “facts” are:
    “Liberal rules”.
See Iggy’s PR below* from 06 May, 2009.

    Iggy’s “facts”:

    *”May 6, 2009
    Statement by Michael Ignatieff
This morning I accepted Ruby Dhalla’s resignation as Youth & Multiculturalism Critic. Ms. Dhalla will continue to serve as the Liberal Member of Parliament for Brampton-Springdale. I look forward to a determination of the facts regarding her family’s experience with live-in caregivers.”

  18. Joanne says:

Joanne, you realize by making that comparison you have permanently tarnished the reputation of Mr. Rogers

Ow! Now I feel bad. And that was one of my daughter’s favourite shows.

  19. Joe Calgary says:

Well… really, what were you expecting from a party that’s broke. I don’t mind Iggy… he is a little creepy. Big bloody Head on him. He’s the first decent leader since Turner to me.

I wouldn’t expect a lot of idea’s coming from the Liberal Party anytime soon. Typically any of the good ones will get appropriated by the Tories.

With the NDP and Bloc crapping their pants at the idea of an election… Iggy’s got lots and lots of time to stick his foot in it.

  20. MaryT says:

IRuby might have secured the nomination, but,
will Iggy sign them. She has put him in a very awkward position. And has she signed up x numbers of new members who will donate their 10.00/month to the victory fund.
What were the qualifications Iggy set out a few weeks ago re secure nominations.
At least the conservative candidate knows who they are up against.

  21. MaryT says:

Should also ask, how many of those supporters knew what they were signing for IRuby.

  22. MaryT says:

I finally broke down and watched the video. What a lame response, he never once defended what he was doing during his absence. He never once contraticted anything in the truth ads, but I think he did try to attack PMSH instead of defending himself. If nothing else he could have said he did follow Gretzky via the media, he did follow the referendum (oops, his comment on that was Canada was lost and Quebec was full of people who talked different),
If he or liberals think anyone will become a supporter via this video, wrong.

  23. C.C. says:

Perhaps Micheal needs a good stylist to help him out?

Thought it funny in the “pretending” song by Mr. Rogers that he had on a nice red sweater too.

Funny stuff – and who said Conservatives had no sense of humour? We’re a laugh-riot!

  24. Joanne says:

Thought it funny in the “pretending” song by Mr. Rogers that he had on a nice red sweater too.

Yeah, he did have a red sweater on for ‘Pretending. lol!

    Glad you enjoyed it.

I just got back from the library. Both books I had ordered came in at the same time. One is “Shakedown” and the other is “Blue Thunder”.

I guess I know what I’ll be doing for a while. Did anyone read both yet? If so, which did you prefer?

When the going gets tough, the tough go to … Bermuda ! A Hill news hound reports that as soon as shiny new Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff admonished his opponents for targeting him in an ad campaign pointing out he’s spent the better part of the last 4 decades domiciled abroad, and just as soon as he beseeched his MPs to spend this past off-week consulting with constituents back in their ridings, now news that Michael and wife Zsuszanna (citizenship unknown) was spotted en route to Bermuda for some R&R. Curiously, not a tweet about the secret getaway from the great man or from his most trusted adjunct.”

Just to let everyone know that the “gremlin” was here and updated the Harper Government Record.

  27. Bec says:

    Joanne@ # 25

They are SOOO different that a preference is impossible.

Ezra’s book, is like having him in your living room, glass of wine and a fantastic discussion until 4AM

Blue Thunder, is very historical and may be tedious if you dislike that sort of thing.

I LOVED both but give yourself several days for BT and 1 great day in the yard for Shakedown.

  28. Joanne says:

    Thanks Sandy! ;)

  29. Joanne says:

Bec @ #27 – Ah, thanks. I just started Ezra’s book. Loved the introduction by Mark Steyn.

I picked that one to start because it was thinner and of course we all love Ezra.

  30. Bec says:

Btw, I think some of us that supported the CPoC ads, need a hug.
The ‘McPherson’ piece, is bang on to what some of us were saying, I think.

If the LIEberal operatives are checking in, keep those 90 second ‘me-mercials’ coming in.
You guys are right, he just is so great at selling himself….and so was my grumpy, lecturing, mean uncle.

  31. Joanne says:

Yeah Bec. I’m a bit conflicted after reading that MacPherson column. Boy was that a pleasure to read after all the others bashing the ads.

I think there is a place for that kind of ad, and it’s a good time for it now. It sets up the broad strokes.

Then when Iggy finally gets some policy out, we can do contrast ads. And if he doesn’t put policy out, we should go after that too.

  32. C.C. says:

I read Blue Thunder. It’ll will definitely leave you with a sense of pride.

O/T – To those in Ontario – MPP Michael Bryant has quit politics…..a “stunner” according to sources a Bourque.

Also, how do you like that great pretender Ignatiaff on the one hand yipping it up in his ad about how being an absentee Canadian doesn’t matter to Canadians…that he’s just as loyal as the next guy, and bam…..he’s sipping Coladas on the beach in Bermuda.

What’s the matter Mr. Ignatieff – not hot enough here in Canada for you this week?

  33. fh says:

mikey Ignatieff’s dad was George if you google you get lots of information
mikey was sent back to Canada to attend school at Upper Canada College
    his age about 11 years
George was an international diplomat so the family was not in Canada on a continuous basis but wanted their children to attend Upper Canada College

The Great Anointed One Speaks gather near, It has come to my attention that we are in recession, a National Crisis, Red Tape is parylyzing infracture spending, I propose E.I. for everyone until the Crisis is over…… phew that was tough! My wife and I are going to go now to Bermuda for a rest, before somebody figures out it was us Liberals that screwed up E.I. to start with and that unemployment numbers were higher then, and we actually cut 5 weeks off the entitlement when there were more unemployed then than today. Of course that was when I wasen’t here so I will pretend I didn’t get the memo. By the way you nasty little Conservatives, could you possibly “age” me in those “truth ads” makes me sad to see me young and vibrant sigh.

  36. Bec says:

from your link Joanne @# 33 ps Thank you

“What the Conservatives are saying is that Harper is Timmy’s and Ignatieff is Second Cup.”

I would even disagree with this, frankly. Second Cup,although lovely, not in the ‘bistro’, a gazillion roasts, books on the shelves, quiet, snobby sort of place, I imagine the Count, frequents.
He is a ’boutique-ie’, privately owned in a trendy neighbourhood, coffee/tea drinker, kind of snob.

Actually, I also found the French language part interesting as well.
He definitely spoke lousy Canadian French (is that what we call it,now?)when he first honored Canada, with his presence. I have heard that numerous times.

  37. Liz J says:

If Ignatieff thinks giving the people of Canada the facts about his absence from the country for so many decades is a bad thing or is detrimental to his grand plan to become PM, he’s got a problem. He’s also got a problem when the ads are clips of himself making statements then turning around and calling them attack ads. Is he attacking himself?

  38. wilson says:

    mary @23
‘he never once defended what he was doing during his absence’

I think that was the brilliance of the truth ads.
Now Iffy’s great and wonderful 34 year adventure was not a ‘political experience’ builder.
And how could Iffy brag, when the ads were about him being an arrogant self-centered opportunist!

So rather than being in awe of Iffy and his super acheivements,
Jo and Mary Sixpack will think ‘yah, but that was before he came back to Canada’,
and discount what Libs and the media thought was his ticket to the big chair.

Iffy’s political career started in 2006.
    3 years an opposition MP.
Has never won a Liberal leadership race.
Has never held a ministerial position, thats a first for a Lib leader, in Liberal history.

    Paul,

I appreciate the plug, and I contribute regularly to the Post. You can see my contributions by clicking on my name.

As for the Iggy video, I’ll say this: at least he managed to get it in focus. Remember Dion’s attempt?

  41. Luke says:

    Hey Joanne
Blue Thunder is a great read. I haven’t finished Shakedown yet, but both are very good in their own ways. Blue Thunder is an excellent, historical overview of every Conservative leader. The chapters on John A. MacDonald, Brian Mulroney, Robert Borden, and John Diefenbaker were probably my favorites. Also, Conrad Black’s intro isn’t bad either. I really found that the book really gives you a more complete understanding of our Conservative roots (especially for younger folks who never really saw Mulroney, let alone anyone before him).

  42. East of Eden says:

Paul – try curcumin, from a natural foods store, for your arthritis. I have psoriatic arthritis and it’s a b**ch to control. I am allergic to anti-inflammatory drugs and have only one option: low-dose Celebrex for four days at a stretch. So, I take curcumin to help reduce the inflammation. Curcumin is natural and is found in tumeric – I have since noticed that very few south Asian people suffer from joint pain.

I read Steyn’s column in MacLean’s and loved it. Steyn is one great journalist.

Joanne – prepare yourself to be outraged as you get into Shakedown – it made my blood boil when I read the stupidity of the HRCs. If I didn’t know it to be true, I would have thought Levant was making it up – the stupidity is overwhelming. I may raise the ire of women here, but the HRCs seem to be run by uber-feminazi women with big axes to grind as they justify their salaries.

I don’t understand what is going on at The Star. They have begun printing mildly positive stories on Harper and the government while exposing Dhalla and, now…gasp…a story on Obama that is not gushingly positive. One might say that is is not complimentary to Obama.

What next, a positive article about Harper? I think aliens have taken over at The Star. When that paper starts to publish uncomplimentary stories about Liberals or Obama, you know that the universe has gone awry.

I don’t know about anybody else, but is this spring’s allergy onslaught worse than before? I’ve never had symptoms as intense as I have this past week. I think we should introduce a pollen tax – that’ll show those trees.

  43. Joanne says:

Thanks for the Chucker link, Wilson. That was great.

  44. Joanne says:

Thanks for the book reviews everyone. Sounds they’re both good in their own way.

    Looking forward to it.

  45. Bec says:

    Luke @ #43

Excellent book review although I found the author’s bias, a bit obvious on PMBM but we shall see what Joanne, thinks.
In fact my favorite part was getting to know Stanfield, a lot more intimately and reinforcing my ALBERTA embarrassment of Joe,baby.
Sorry Joanne! Don’t you just HATE people like me? Trust me, the gabble from my keyboard, was very restrained!

  46. Joanne says:

Sorry Joanne! Don’t you just HATE people like me?

No, please. Keep it coming. It’s not like a mystery or anything where the ending might be spoiled.

No actually it could be spoiled for you. I am anxiously awaiting your opinion on say, your lifetime of the Conservatives.

I also want to add, now that Luke, has referred to Conrad Black’s intro, I am interested how you feel about that too.

  49. Sammy says:

Totally OT here..but,anyone see the all day campaign by ctv begging for our support with getting help from the feds for local tv stations? I’m thinking, since they are asking for ‘feedback’ now would be a good time to let ctv know how we feel about their constant mockery of PMSH,Cons.MP’s,and their Lib bias.I REFUSE to help out their cause until they can show they can be non-partisan.What say you???

Spoiling an ending reminds me of a man-in-street interview re the reviews of some movie on WW11. A young woman said she liked the movie but was upset so many had talked about how it and given away the ending. Even the reporter was speechless.

  52. jad says:

Sorry, Joanne, I messed up #49

S/B: “Michael and wife Zsuszanna was spotted en route to Bermuda for some R&R. (Bourque)

What, not Lake Algonquin ??? I’m shocked. You might think that as the brand new leader of the party, he could find something to occupy himself during the down week at Parliament, but I guess all the real work is better left to the minions. Not to mention seizing the opportunity to spend some quality time exploring his roots.

  53. MaryT says:

Who is taking care of MEME the cat. And I thought he enjoyed some park in Canada, is it closed now, that he had to leave the country-again. Maybe he will stay away another 34 years.

  54. paulsstuff says:

Apparently Bermuda is more deserving of stimulus funding than Canada. Or maybe Iggy is there to study their E.I. system.

    Ya, that’s gotta be it.

  55. Raphael says:

Is the Bermuda trip being paid for with stimulus dollars or his own money? I know how politicians like to get their freebies early and often.

  56. Joanne says:

That’s incredible about Iggy in Bermuda! He obviously feels he is above all that leadership nonsense.

And if there’s a snap election, I’m sure he feels that the Liberals are entitled to win.

  57. Raphael says:

    Joanne,

Are all comments moderated? Mine always are for some reason.

  58. Joanne says:

Raph, I’ve got comment moderation on. Nothing personal.

  59. paulsstuff says:

Raph, Joanne has been divebombed lately by childish trolls, hence the need for moderation of comments.

  60. MaryT says:

#51-At the start of the week Bourque had a line re the petition to save ctv. Onlyl 23000, had signed it. It is now up to 41,000. That isn’t a lot of people to support saving ctv.
I like my local ctv, it is the national crap we have to get to have it. I agree with you, we should have an email blitz to ctv and tell them, change or quit.

  61. MaryT says:

Just a thought, any chance Iggy and wife could get lost in the Bermuda Triangle during their flight home.
How will he and his handlers explain going away to his caucus. Another truth ad, Canada in great economic distress and liberal unelected leader goes on holiday.

  62. Lorraine says:

    Funnies I came across:
    How does one pronounce Ignatieff?

    1. Wikipedia says “Michael Grant Ignatieff, MP (/ɪgˈna.tʃəf/; born May 12, 1947)”

    2. According to Wikipedia, Michael is a given name that comes from the Hebrew: מִיכָאֵל / מיכאל‎ (mee-KHA-el), meaning “Who is like God?”

From what I can gather Ignatieff is a Canadian word meaning: “Me.”

    3. Ignatieff” is a crude transliteration from the Cyrillic of “Igna”, meaning “to light” and “tieff”, or “Chef”. The entire name thus means, “Who is like God? A hot chef!” The implication is that, God willing, he’ll cook Harper’s goose.
    -
The name is pronounced “not ste- fon dee-on”.

  63. Lorraine says:

    From Taber:

Hot: A Bermuda beach. Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff urged his caucus last week to use this break week to fan out in their ridings, talk about employment insurance changes and take the pulse of their constituents.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ignatieff and his wife, Zsuszanna Zsohar , took off Monday for Bermuda.

Mr. Ignatieff, who is portrayed in the recent Tory attack ads as a snob who spends little time in Canada, was spotted on the southbound plane, happily reading Dan Brown’s mystery thriller (now a major motion picture) Angels & Demons . No heavy political tome for him.

  64. East of Eden says:

Raph – if you want to see the havoc and stupidity caused by trolls, take a look at Janke’s blog. Personally, I am very happy that Joanne moderates comments so that only the rational, reasonable, logical, and intelligent comments are published. Trolls are a disease and preventive medicine is required.

  65. Liz J says:

Oh for goodness sake folks, you can’t expect the Count to go off camping in Algonquin Park and risk getting bitten/eaten by black flies.
Bermuda is much more fitting for Himself and Countess Suzy or whatever she’s called.

He sure isn’t too concerned about getting together a policy or two to offer up as reason we should consider him to run our affairs of state.

In typical highbrow fashion he leaves the grunt work to his underlings, his MP’s, to go work in their ridings so he can eventually reap the rewards.

Maybe he’s searching for a flock of Puffins to hide some poop like the Ruby Dee Nanny abuse allegations. Then again maybe he took along his briefs,it’s a “working holiday”, he’ll return with a fresh supply of fodder for the Conservative truth ads.

He could also be drowning his sorrows in rum swizzles, poor boy was hurt and offended by his own words, and hearing about his professional life spent almost entirely away from Canada.

  66. Joanne says:

Lorraine @ #65 – Do you have a link or title? Thanks.

  67. Joanne says:

-Has he got his 400 paid up members with 10 who are willing to make monthly donations, to assure his nomination in the next election.
IRuby and 41 other liberal mps have. June 1 is the cutoff date.
Wonder how many of those new members are still above ground and expelling CO2.

  70. Bruce says:

#51 Sammy, the networks made their own bed and now they have to lay down. They’ve cut their own throats with all of the biased bile that they spew day in and day out. The advertising revenue decline is a natural result of this, then added on to that is the poor management and the current economic downturn.

    Their campaign to save local TV is as much a fraud as Glo-Bull Warming, it’s really about saving the networks with taxpayer dollars, but seeing as their are willing buyers there is no need that kind of support. In my mind this dilution of concentration of the MSM is a good thing. To wit;

CTVglobemedia president and CEO Ivan Fecan said the company has accepted the offer of $1 per station by Shaw, Canada’s second-biggest cable TV operator.

“Cable is rolling in money and can obviously afford to underwrite the losses. Good for them,” said Fecan.

“I’m sure they will live up to the existing conditions of licence placed on these stations which is wonderful news for the employees and for the people of Windsor, Wingham and Brandon.”
