Does Iggy agree with Senator Baker that Nfld needs their own Bloc?

Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff needs to get control of this situation quickly (H/T National Newswatch).    Senator George Baker is becoming a real embarrassment for He Who Speaks for the Liberal Party.

And the last thing Canada needs is another exclusively self-interested regional party in our Federal Parliament.

Update: Bec has alerted us to this fantastic interview on Charles Adler with Senator Mike Duffy. This is dynamite..  Go to CHQR’s audiovault, and select Wednesday March 4 at at 12:00 pm. Then start listening around the 34 minute mark.

Adler has actual audio file of Senator Baker’s remarks from the evening before on a Newfoundland talkshow. (VOCM)

Senator Baker digs himself in deeper:

In an interview Wednesday, Baker reiterated his comments, saying he would support the creation of a Bloc Newfoundland in the next federal election if Harper’s next budget again “removes money from Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Asked if he would lead such a party, Baker said, “I’d probably consider it. But I’m a bit too old.”

He said the Prime Minister’s Office wants him out of the Liberal caucus not because of anything he said on the radio, but because the Conservatives fear Baker may disrupt smooth passage of the budget implementation bill, which is now before the Senate.

Baker has managed to secure temporary membership on the Senate’s finance committee, where he plans to put forward a motion to protect what he considers Newfoundland’s fair share of offshore oil revenues.

“I’ve also been actively trying to get other senators to vote against the implementation act,” he said, “and (the PMO) is trying to discredit me.”

Ryan Cleary, the radio host to whom Baker made his comments — who himself has advocated independence for Newfoundland and Labrador — said a well-led and well-financed separatist party might fare well in the next election.

“There’s been a lot of debate in the last couple of years about whether a Bloc Newfoundland and Labrador party would work,” said Cleary, who came close to winning a seat for the federal NDP in the last campaign…

Senator Baker seems to have a few cheerleaders here at Web Talk – Newfoundland and Labrador.

Well following last’s night conversation I say go for it,the Kingdom of New Quebecland. Guess Senator Baker never thought about ABC and it’s consequences. be off wit you now Buddy!

  2. Bec says:

Mike Duffy is on Adler right now, discussing it.

Senator Baker, has bugged me, always. Why change now?

  3. Babylonian says:

Smart on Harper (via Teneycke) to issue the statement saying he should be removed from caucus. They really shouldn’t let this one slide, a media blitz would be in order, maybe a commerical, something light, just the facts, very basic, so as not to pass as “negativity” (goodness I hate these new-age buzz words/phrases “think positive” “don’t be negative” “stop being hurtfull”) Let’s see if the party of the “Big Tent” (reminds me of a circus, lol) can crack the whip on this rebelious side show performer run a muck.

  4. Bec says:

Babylonian @ 2:51 pm was there a press release?

Joanne, Mike Duffy interview on Adler, just ended.
Started at 12:30 pm MTN if you want it from the archives, it should be available in 20 or so minutes. EXCELLENT!

Da Bloc on da Roc … or … Rock-a-Blok

  6. Babylonian says:

I read it at the bottom of theSTAR.ca article linked by Joanne in the begining. :)

All they need to do is run with it now.

  7. Liz J says:

Speaking of fools and foolishness on the Hill, right now we have Boob Rae after QP going on about the death Of Gib Parent, former Speaker, and mentioning other Liberals like Judy Lamarche. Bob Rae was certainly not sitting in the Federal House as a Liberal or as anything else during those years and he sure as hell wasn’t a Liberal. Is there no other long term Liberal who could speak about Mr. Parent?

  8. fernstalbert says:

So who really sets policy for the Liberals -are they all free lancers? Did we not predict this chaos when Ignatieff allowed the Newfoundland 6 to vote against the budget? You now get Baker! How many Senators are from Newfoundland that are Liberal – can’t be enough to hold up legislation. Although Mac Harb could be counted on to support the Newfoundlanders. Any wonder PM Harper wants to reform this Chamber Pot and make them accountable with elections and term limits.

  9. Joanne says:

    Yes, Joanne!

  14. LC Bennett says:

Quebec separation, Newf separation, western separation…

I have a better idea. A national referendum – Survivor Series. Everyone gets to put their cards on the table. Two questions:

1.Do you want your province to stay in Canada?
2.Which province would you like to kick out of Canada?

Tally up the votes and post the results. Then start negotiations for those who voluntarily want to leave and those who are no longer welcome. heh

  15. I came in from shopping just in time to see Bob Rae standing up to pay tribute to Gilbert Parent. WHAT!!!! I said to myself is he doing up on his feet…for starters as Liz said, he was not a liberal in Parent’s time or even thinking of it…and for another….. why wasn’t someone up on their feet who really knew and worked with him. Peter Stouffer did stand up having experienced some time with him….though…I always wonder when I see Peter how much longer he is going to put up with being NDP… —- just wondering —–

Gilbert Parent had presence and grace and humour…and he managed the Speakers job very well.

    I am off topic I know…

    Bah Humbug to George Baker…

  16. Babylonian says:

Let them make their party, that’s 6 less seats for the Liberals, or a liberal alienation amongst federalists in NFLD, and a potential for 6 new conservatives MP’s come next election.

I am not saying this sentiment is shared on masse, but did this only start happening after they became a “have” province?

  17. fernstalbert says:

Dear LC Bennett: What a terrific idea – would be just what the CBC needs to boost their revenue stream. We have to insist that the Survivor Canada Series be held during the summer so all the babes can wear bikinis for gratuitous ogling (full winter wear would be a downer). Who has the script? Let the cameras roll!

  18. Bec says:

Watch the spin blame the PM, somehow.

6 Rookie MP’s, with the blessing of their weak-kneed leader, can be proud of stirring up this hornets nest.

See what happens when you have a welfare mentality and win the lottery? You still want both.

  19. Joanne says:

Bec, thanks for the Mike Duffy tip. That was a dynamite interview! Wow.

  20. Liz J says:

Always hate to comment off topic but sometimes something comes up that’s hard to ignore. With that in mind would an open thread each day be a way to avoid doing that or would it take over?

Is there a link to the Duffy interview?

  21. Joanne says:

Liz, just jump in there. Any topic is welcome no matter what the thread.

For the Duffy interview, check the latest update at the end of this post.

  22. LC Bennett says:

    “babes can wear bikinis”

    and

the premiers can wear speedos. Perhaps the survivor loser can jump off a cliff with Mercer. (Bob Rae did it au naturel but I don’t think TV viewers want a repeat of that spectacle)

  23. Bec says:

    Joanne,

I have been spending the last 10 minutes looking for that link to the journalist from Saskatchewan, Patricia Robertson. Anyone recall? She is on Adler now, speaking about the Iggy, rural shmoozing.
    It also is a hoot.
Re the Duffy interview, I always have a problem figuring out how to get the setup to the half hour.

Patricia Robertson would be about 2:10 MTN. Hysterical!

  24. Bec says:

    Wait for this….

Adler, just referred to Iggiasm, as trying to be the “Eddie Albert, of Green Acres” Oh my goodness, how I love Adler!!

  25. C.C. says:

Harper should call the vote tomorrow. He can do that can’t he? Or is there a set no. of days it has to be discussed or in committee?

That would force a few things to happen. The Liberals would have to put their vote where they yaps are currently and if the Coalition defeats the gov’t we’ve got an election Harper vs. the Coalition.

Perhaps the Harper is letting Iggy have more rope.

More rope…more ammunition for those attack ad.

You know the ones where the Liberals are quoted in contradictions, threats and fancy shmancy lingo.

  26. wilson says:

‘See what happens when you have a welfare mentality and win the lottery? You still want both.’

    Good one Bec!

Danny’s 6 should sit as independants,
maybe Duceppe will welcome them into the Bloc!

ABC, ABL … no use giving Dippers a try, can’t threaten the 4th party into anything…

  27. C.C. says:

    Survivor – Canada Series???

But LC, we already have one of those.

It’s called real life in Canada. Sure as heck feels like we’re living in a reality series just being Canadian.

  28. Joanne says:

George Baker’s on PP right now!

  29. Liz J says:

Did I hear correctly when Danny Williams was speaking about the botched breast cancer lab tests in his province? He said some of the responsibility should also go to the federal health department? I hope I heard wrong. If not,he can join old nutter, Senator Georgie Baker and form a block party and see where he can take it.

  30. C.C. says:

SDA has a good post up re: canada’s “International Man of Questions” – I think we’re getting really creative with the Iggy nicknames.

Iggy, Igor, Eddie Albert on Green Acres(what was his character’s name – I forget), the Professor on Gilligan’s Island(with Ginger), someone had a great photo up of Iggy as the Joker(best one I’ve seen).

This guy’s stock is going down faster than mine.

  36. Fay says:

I can’t believe I missed all this on Charles Adler today. I went out to shovel in the warm weather.
We need to hear more from Mike Duffy!!!
Kudos to Tom Clark for at least discussing this on Power Play.

  37. Soccermom says:

Has Igor said ANYTHING about this Baker debacle, or has he lost complete control of his troops?

  38. frmgrl says:

I went outside today too to do some pruning on one of our bushes. I took out my little radio and listened to the show while I was working. Good show BTW!

  39. Liz J says:

Agree Joanne, Baker is off his rocker.
No one with a brain in gear goes off on rants like Senator George Baker. He’s a nice problem for Iggypoo.

  40. Bec says:

Soooo, from Power Play-date, Jane reveals that from the super secret liberal caucus meeting, a focus on a National Daycare Program, in an eventual election?

Well, well, well, higher taxes anyone? Deja Vu to the 1990’s and Chretien/Martin, dumbing down the tax payer with the National Gun registry.

  41. Soccermom says:

Yep, Bec, when that pompous Ken Dryden stood up in QP and bloviated (one of Bill O’Reilly’s words!) about National Daycare AGAIN, you know, YOU JUST KNOW, that that issue will never die with those idiots.

Yes just what we need – another entitlement program, with a huge bureaucracy – and UNION REPRESENTATION. Can anyone say HUGE BOONDOGGLE??

  42. Orville says:

At least George Baker is drawing attention to a serious problem that we have in Canada and that is the power that Quebec yields in Federal politics to benefit Quebec by electing 49 Bloc members out 0f 75.
If it’s good for Quebec why shouldn’t other provinces use the same power play and do great things for their province.
It appears more and more Canadians are becoming aware that Quebec is screwing us and it is time to bring a halt to it – we have caught on to their game.

  43. Joe says:

We’ll have to see if Iggy blinks. The PM has dug in his heels regarding itemizing the stimulus package. Somehow I think Iggy is so full of himself we’re going to be going to the polls & finally show the coalition what the average Canadian really thinks of them. Hope they have enough seats in the HOC for all the new Conservative MP’s.

    Canadian media is a joke..

    PS:Not you CC, you rock..;)

  46. Liz J says:

Heard a Steel Union head blame Harper for not putting out the money!! Talk about braindeads. It’s looking like the Libranos will be having to call the shots on the election, Harper has the money and they’re the bozos who are acting tough and holding it up. This from the Party who were the architects of the mother of all scandals against the taxpayers of this country with ADSCAM.

  47. Bec says:

This is NOT about PMSH and I agree with Orville @ 6:20 pm, 100%. I have never thought of it that way.

    Soccermom @ 6:12 pm

A bunch of old crony men and limited youthful, vibrant women, think that they could do this?

I hope to he!! that they explain, “oh and by the way folks, your taxes will go up and ALL Canadian, will pay for this initiative”.

Did I mention that the provincial equalization formula would change as this is under provincial, jurisdiction?

  48. MaryT says:

I think it would be great if a video clip of Iggy saying he is the leader of the liberal party and no one will speak without his permission. Then a clip of Baker. Or better yet have the Baker clip first, followed by iggy saying they are speaking for me.
Can’t have an election yet, Iggy hasn’t convinced Toronto he is in love with, and undertands farmers.
Does Iggy know it was his hero that asked, Why should I sell your wheat, gave us the finger, and also the NEP. Does Iggy know it was Goodale that put western farmers in jail for selling their own grain, off board. Will Iggy enforce the CWB on all of Canada farmers, instead of just the west.
Sorry Iggy, the west is gone from liberals for another generation. Try forming a govt with seats in TO, Van and Montreal, and no where else, with or without duceppe/layton/nfld bloc.
As mentioned in a comment at JNW, it is impossible to list where and how much money will be spent until bidding and contracts are let. Those don’t start till projects have been approved. How stupid does Iggy think canadians (other than liberals) are.
Call the election. Conservatives vs coalition.

  49. Liz J says:

Puck head Dryden is continuing his drone as the expert on child care funding. Pardon me, but the parents of this country are more inclined to want choice in child care.
A family with four kids getting an extra $100.00 per child each month is nothing to sneeze at either.
More day care spaces have been created by the Conservatives in their short time in Office than the Liberals ever contributed to in their long reign.
This topic is becoming a sham.

I personally am hoping that Baker, is doing a ‘classic Baker’ and speaking out of turn. He is known for being a complete, imbecile.

The other Premiers should rein in Danny, particularly the other Maritime provinces.
    If not, the MP’s.
This guy has lived off the dole of Canadian tax payers, worked 100 days a year (estimate) and is threatening to hold up the budget.

Time to go. The guy, just does not get what he was APPOINTED to do, 27 or so years ago.

  56. C.C. says:

Bec – thanks. “Oliver” Ignatieff works too, who’ll play Arnold? Think twice about this call because Arnold was one smart pig.

  57. C.C. says:

Thanks JDot – but I’m not one of the MSM or PPG. I’m just trying to make a difference in my town, and believe me, even that gets me in the line of fire of left-leaning types out here.

  58. wilson says:

Baker was an MP when Trudeau told Newfoundland to get stuffed, not a penny of offshore oil for them. Didn’t seem to bother Baker then.

Danny has become obsessed with PMSH.

  59. Fay says:

Our local supper news just finished. Julie Van Hairdo from CBC showed clip of Prime Minister on CNN. All they released was PM Harper saying ” we can not defeat the insurgents” next on is Coderre saying that the PM’s comments do not respect the Quebec soldiers who just lost their lives and then on to Duceppe wondering why Quebec is sacrificing lives? Only on CBC, and very predictable. The Liberals don’t need attack ads , they have CBC and CTV.

  60. Bec says:

    BakerG@sen.parl.gc.ca

My letter to the APPOINTED, senator….

    Dear Mr Baker,

While following the media reports, your threat to encourage the separation of Newfoundland from the rest of Canada, I wondered, what is that man thinking? What are you thinking, Mr Baker?

Are you not the media darling and an ad nauseam user of the phrase, “sober second thought”?
Oh my, “sober second thought” only applies to other regions in Canada that may have received the shaft, under previous governments?

Were you a defender of the West, during the attempted coup d’etat? Oh my, coalition, sorry about the word use. Of course because when it comes to other regions in Canada, the tables turn.

Let me tell you how I see this, Mr Baker. You were not elected to support Newfoundland, you were appointed and may I say,you have enjoyed a fairly cushy life at the expense of the tax payers of Canada.
That includes me, Mr Baker. You see, when the coup d’etat was playing out, I e-mailed my senators in Alberta, to defend my, Alberta interests. Did they threaten to separate the country? No, Mr Baker unlike you, they are used to the shaft for Western Canadians and likely used dialogue to solve the problem that your party, the LIBERALS have created out here in Alberta.

Your behaviour Mr Baker, is asinine, immature and unpatriotic. Please sir, live up to your own rhetoric and give it, sober second thought.

Quit blaming as well. You sound like a welfare recipient that won the lottery, and wants both life styles. Terribly unflattering in these economic times.

    Sincerely,

  61. Joanne says:

The Liberals don’t need attack ads , they have CBC and CTV.

    No kidding!

  62. Soccermom says:

    Great letter, Bec.

Again, I ask: What has Count Igor said about this, if anything? Or is he hiding under the blankets somewhere, afraid to face the public?

Iggy: Afraid to Face the Public.
    Can’t Control His Party.
    Not a Leader.

  63. Joanne says:

    Good letter, Bec.

I suspect old Danny’s got a hand in this somewhere.

  64. Ruth says:

Any Party in the Federal Government should have to run candidates in all Provinces. Since the Newfoundland Party would only care about their Province, it would have to be a Provincial Party. Just like the Bloc should be just a Provincial Party in Quebec, not sitting in the HOC.
If they don’t have the interests of all of Canada, then why are they in the HOC wasting our time.

  65. Bruce says:

Ruth, I agree one hundred percent.

That and the repeal of Chretien’s $1.95 per vote taxpayer subsidy.

  66. wilson says:

MPs who outwardly represent only one region should have Independant status only (no taxpayer funding).

That’s what Casey did, that is what Danny’s 6 should do,
and that is exactly what the Bloc is,
    49 Independants.

  67. Bec says:

This is all about equalization with Danny and his merry band.

The telling comment for me from the senator, was when he referenced the Nfld, nurses.( from the Power Play-date, interview)

I am still shaking my head. Health care funding under his boys, was decimated for the provinces.
This is political. This is about power. This is about control.
Danny Williams is PC & G Baker is Liberal. One of them is fibbing. Or are they both closet NDP?

  68. wilson says:

Any bets that Danny’s 6 have Iffy trapped in a room somewhere, demanding He support a Senate amendment to the budget, giving Newfies the money they demand?

Coalition Dion and Jack promised Danny what he wanted.
But, Iffy said (before He appointed himself Lib leader) that caps on equalization were necessary.

Funny that Iffy has not come out in support of Danny’s equalization cash grab, eh.
So is that why Danny sent in Baker?
Make things hot hot hot for poor Iffy.
Oh, and blame it on PMSH.

Danny Williams has no use for PM Harper. Senator Baker blames the PM re the equalization payments. The coalition, the media, the unions, the establishment, and countless others have been trying desperately, in any way possible, to rid themselves of PM Harper. They have failed so far. So, let’s see, what can they do? Senator Baker suggests a separatist Newfoundland party. Quebec has brought up the topic of separation as usual. Now, this sets the stage for Iggy and the Liberals.

Here come the Liberals to bring forth Canadian unity. After all, PM Harper has caused disunity in this country. Ok, this is my scenario. Probably far-fetched but I wouldn’t put anything past the Liberals. They, oh so desperately, want to regain power. Also; I believe Newfoundland and Quebec would love to see the Liberals in power, especially if arrangements were made!!

Is Williams capable of a wet dream? I always thought the problem was that he was no longer capable of anything like that and this is why his face is always angry.

  86. Joanne says:

…Here come the Liberals to bring forth Canadian unity. After all, PM Harper has caused disunity in this country. Ok, this is my scenario. Probably far-fetched but I wouldn’t put anything past the Liberals. They, oh so desperately, want to regain power…

I don’t think your scenario is far-fetched at all, Ed. Especially after checking out the wording in that CTV poll.

    This smells like a set-up.

  87. Liz J says:

Yeah ed, you hit the nail on the head with “especially if arrangements were made”. I’d say Newfoundland and Quebec AND Liberals are all about arrangements.

  88. Jen says:

I highlighted what I said on Roy’s blog so is no sense re-writing.

what can the liberals do to Senator George Baker-absolutely nothing.
The liberals can’t cry democracy love and unity of the country because he will laugh in their faces since it was the liberals ndp and bloc that joined hands in matrimony to basically break up this country when they formed an illegal unelected coalition against citizens who voted for the prime minister.
Not to mention that every liberal signature is on the coalition agreement including IGNATIEFF, who in fact said on Global national news that he ‘HONOURS’ his signature on the coalition agreement.
EVEN THE Liberal MSM showed favouritsm towards this deal against canadians.
SO it is rather ironic for any liberal to cry or say against BAKERS’S DEAL OF SEPARATION-THE COALITION WANTED IT.

  89. Liz J says:

Rich isn’t it, Newfoundland joins the other Gimme province, Quebec and threatens to go it alone because they aren’t getting enough from the ROC. Does that not prove they really don’t need us after all? Who will they rely on for Health care, Defence etc. Will they mint their own currency?

Maybe it’s time to take a look at the mental state of a few of the people who are pushing this idiocy. It’s got to be a mental problem for someone to have such a hatred displayed by Danny the Whiner for our PM.
All Newfoundland MP’s are Danny’s puppets and that will require Iggypoo to show strong leadership which up to now he hasn’t.

  90. MaryT says:

OT, but it appears that Iggy’s new fundraiser is using his tactics on riding associations. I wonder how liberals in Ont, and particularly Toronto will welcome the fact they will be the major financial supporters of the liberals, or they might not get protection from a nomination fight. Hey, didn’t Iggy get in with no fight. Guess his mantra is do as I say, not as I do. And what if he cant get 400 new members with 40 pledging 10.00/month, will he face a fight.
An accounting of said new members and Victory contributors must be in his office by June 1.
    NNW has the story.
Wonder how those rules affect the ridings they don’t have sitting members in. Does that mean if they can’t get 400 new members, plus the 40 to pledge 10.00/month, they can’t run a candidate.

  91. frmgrl says:

Wait a minute, did Iffy donate to his own party last? I thought I read somewhere that he did not.

  92. fh says:

does anyone find it strange that Danny Williams campaign any body but Harper ( Conservative ) has been turned around to be a vendetta by Prime Minister Harper

I think it’s a ploy to convince Canadians that Liberals are the party to unite Canada

    fh

  93. ed says:

I’m sure the Liberals realize that their chances out west are as likely as a snowball surviving in the middle of July. I see the Liberals going after the vote in the east, and — what about B.C.??

The coalition repeatedly says “they don’t trust Harper.” The reality is Canadians do not trust the opposition parties, the Liberals in particular!! That’s why I always look for ulterior motives when it comes to the coalition. “Past behaviour is a good indicator of future behaviour!!”

The opposition formed that coalition. After such a despicable move, nothing will surprise me as to how low they will go to gain power.

  94. Joanne says:

I think it’s a ploy to convince Canadians that Liberals are the party to unite Canada

I think so too. It’s a rather misguided plan though. First the Liberals legitimize the Bloc by signing a coalition deal with them. Then Iggy lets the Nfld MPs break rank.

Now he’s ignoring Senator Baker’s call for the Bloc Newfoundlandois.

It’s a strange way to promote unity.

  95. MaryT says:

frmgirl, another example of Iggy telling his people, Do as I say, not as I do.

  96. Soccermom says:

Wasn’t it Paul Martin’s last minute big bucks desperation promise to Williams re equalization that started this whole business?

I also recall distinctly, Williams refusing to fly the Canadian flag on gov’t buildings for a while as well.

Shame on you, Paul Martin. You screwed up this country in so many ways in such a short time, one hardly knows where to begin.

Flaming idiot. You and Danny Williams. Nice pair of nitwits.

  97. ed says:

Another idea: Quebec has learned well that the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Canada has taught Quebec how to treat the country. We’ve taught Quebec that if they complain enough, whine enough, they’ll get what they want. It’s just like parents teaching their children how to treat them. They’ve taught the children that, if they scream, yell or throw a fit, they will get their way!!

Poor Danny Williams, he thought he had learned well how to deal with the feds after studying closely the Quebec method. Surprise, surprise, it didn’t work for Newfoundland!! Am I surprised? No, not at all. Danny should have asked me, I could have told him that!! LOL

This is the reality of Canada, Danny should have known better!!

  98. Jen says:

Danny Williams is now facing problems with the seals product; that the europeans don’t want to buy from. NFLD and aboriginals depend on the sales of the produts to europeanS. I wonder if Danny Williams will cry. LET’S SELL ANYWHERE BUT EUROPE (AWE)

  99. C.C. says:

    Relax folks!

There is no-way the Liberals can claim, through a set-up with the MSM or any one else that their party equals a united Canada…no way in hell actually.

    Why?

    1) Professor Iggy is an accidental Canadian, why by choice has spent the bulk of his living years outside of the country he now claims he wants to champion to unite. Big Kid Ken Dryden would have a better shot using his hockey career as proof that he didn’t have to leave the country to find fame and fortune.

    2) Iggy’s signature is as good as gold on that coalition agreement with the Bloc and NDP. Maybe this is all part of another sidebar agreement agree upon in secret at the headquarters of the Coalition of Inflated Egos, Entitlements and Bob Rae? Remember Bob Rae has always wanted to merge parties. Now the Liberals have their chance, AND to take Danny Millions with them!

    3) All voters, en-route to vote in the next election can point to the coalition for not just breathing new life and momentum into the Conservative silent majority, but for giving CPR to a Separatist party that was deemed DOA…and making putting the break up of the country back on our radar.

I was in Montreal for a couple of days. I’d still be there is it were not for good old Rene L. I miss the smoked meat, steamed hot dogs, St. Viteurs bagels and the Bar-B-Barn(best chicken and ribs on the planet!).

  100. Liz J says:

Anyone foolish enough to cozy up to Danny Williams will live to regret it. He’s a fickle friend consumed with greed and like those who do politics in the province of Quebec, he can turn on a dime. Charest is an example, he acted like a real A-Hole last federal election.

  101. Orville says:

The new paradigm of the Liberal party, when it comes to national unity, should bother Canadians, when we view the direction the party is taking. I expect some members of the national media will soon have to expose and comment on the lack of leadership in the party on this file.
When this Liberal party and all its’ MP’s, including leader Michael Ignatieff ( although some pundits were prepared to give him a pass because his signature was the last one on the letter sent to the GG – and what was more comical is that Ignatieff pointed that out to the press expecting that would exculpate him ), were prepared to welcome the separatist party, the Bloc Quebecois, to their bosom and form a national government, the media looked the other way. In fact some members of the media were forgiving and expressed regret that the only mistake the Liberal party made was sitting down and including Duceppe in the photograph, and not the fact they signed an agreement with the Bloc – can you believe it. It is no secret Ignatieff stated unequivocally, that the coalition option remained on the table, and I challenge the media to quote where Ignatieff has told the world, in no uncertain terms, that the coalition is dead. The fact that some members of the media have said the coalition is dead, they are not the leader of the Liberal party ( although they may be followers of the Liberal party) so Canadians await word of the demise of the coalition party from Ignatieff himself. We may have to wait until Ignatieff, the new Mr. Dithers of the Liberal party, makes up his mind on this question ( or the polls dictate to him what his position is.)
Now we have the spectacle of George Baker, the dean of the Liberal party on the hill in Ottawa, promoting separation, and threatening to follow the path of the Bloc Quebecois, to gain untold benefits for Nfl, just as he states the Bloc has done for Quebec. He has stated in no uncertain terms that he will oppose the budget in the Senate – has he been given a one time pass by Ignatieff?

Canadians must rely (in the absence of any comment from Ignatieff) on public statements of Liberal leadership hopeful Dominic Leblanc who was only a heart beat away from being Liberal leader to comment on Baker’s position, and Leblanc in a feeble attempt and insulting to the intelligence of Canadians said
“George Baker is one of the most colorful characters ever to set foot on Parliament Hill”
This is no consolation to Canadians, because national unity is a serious matter and has preoccupied the mind , actions and pocketbook of Canadians for a long period of time. If talk of separation is only considered as “colorful”, and not denounced as only the words from a Liberal clown in the Senate, and if Baker is not removed from the Liberal caucus, Canadians have good reason to be very concerned about national unity by the action of the Liberal party in the last few months which includes the leadership not only of Dion but also that of Ignatieff as well. In fact if given a choice, I would be much more comfortable with Dion on the Unity file than Ignatieff, who has no previous record, and resided on foreign soil when Canadians rallied and fought to keep the country united, and Ignatieff’s only measurable contribution to Canadian unity was his willingness to become a partner with the Bloc in the government of Canada, leaving the option of the coalition on the table, and now to allow a respected Liberal ( respected by Liberals) George Baker float not only promote Nfl separation, but even vote against the budget.
Will Ignatieff show some backbone and leadership, after Baker, in a direct challenge to Ignatieff’s leadership and control of the Liberal caucus said “I was not told what to do during my 29 years in the House of Commons and I’m not about to be told what to do while in the Senate.” ( Does Ignatieff know insubordination when he is faced with it – does he not see this as a threat to his leadership.)
Why does something tell me to put my money on George Baker in this confrontation – is it because we have seen Ignatieff weasel out in previous provocations?
