David Frum is challenging Dalton McGuinty’s Green Energy Act by exposing some of its more nefarious aspects – Shut up and pay for your windmill. It was also posted in Full Comment yesterday.
According to Frum, local municipalities and landowners will have no veto power, and taxpayers will be expected to fork over the money. Only First Nations will be consulted:
Not all localities will be ignored. There will be special consultation with First Nations/Métis communities (and a special piece of the action for them as well). But for everybody else, Ontario’s message is: Shut up and eat your peas…
I don’t care too much one way or the other about the windmills, but I do care about the democratic process and respecting property owners’ interests even though they have no enshrined rights in our Charter.
What’s missing in action here seems to be our lame-duck PC opposition party. I would expect that the NDP would have no problem with government milking the taxpayer and not allowing any consultations with landowners, but I would have expected a big squawk from the Tories.
Has anyone heard anything? Or do we even have a Conservative party in Ontario anymore?
But when you’re busy navel-gazing and looking for a seat, I guess Ontario’s affairs come second.
