Michael Ignatieff – The Master Orator

From his first presser as the newly installed Liberal leader:

"He must not doubt my calm, quiet, determined determination that he has to walk back down the hill,"

When I watched that bit yesterday, I could see him clearly stumbling for a noun to insert after the adjective ‘determined’.  It’s totally understandable though. He’s been away from those ivy-league halls for a few years now.

Now just to demonstrate that we’re not totally partisan here at Blue Like You, I’m offering the professor a selection of synonyms to inject the next appropriate opportunity:

Synonyms: strength of mind, willpower, resolve, purpose, fortitude, grit, strength of character

Antonym: weakness

So just try practising that before the mirror my good Count. I’m sure you’re there several times a day anyway.

BTW, you made a few other little gaffes too, but never mind. The ignorant masses will never pick it up.

Update: Erwin Gerrits was impressed with the Professor’s oratory skills too!

I’m just waiting to see how Iggy wins over the West and the rural communities with his BS. I’m waiting to see the crowds when he visits Calgary. Hope some of the people out there get some good pictures for us Easterners.

Not to worry Joanne – the MSM will fill in the blanks and provide their Saviour with everything he needs to slay that evil Stephen Harper.

I wonder how Iggy is going to handle the breaking news that the Liberals BROKE THE LAW in how they handled EI.

But he is busy and has things to do so I would assume it will slide under the radar.

    What????

  4. Ruth says:

They left a big surplus and always balanced the books, I wonder what Mr. McCallum will be spouting out now.

  5. Alberta Girl says:

I heard it on the radio – during the news cast at 8 am – it was breaking news from the supreme court. That is all I know except that the Liberals under Chretien and Martin BROKE THE LAW. I am sure it will be on NNW or Bourque soon.

I am assuming the decision came down and – as reported on the radio – the Liberals broke the law.

  7. Dave says:

Heard on 570News first thing this morning: ‘PM Harper DID call Ignatieff and they had a short business-like conversation, in which the PM apparently asked for a one-on-one meeting to discuss the budget / economy.’

They then reported that Ignatieff had ‘not said Yes or No to such a meeting‘. Huh!? If true, What freakin Arrogance. My gut feel about this Iggy guy from day one is that he would ratchet-up the famed ‘Liberal Arrogance and Entitlement’ to an even higher level … if that’s possible.

Iggy, maybe you need to eat some humble pie yourself
and get off your high horse when the Lib-MSM cameras are running. I believe your signature is included in the paperwork supporting the NDP-Bloc authored Coalition attempt.

  8. paulsstuff says:

It’s on the ctv website Jaonne. During 2002, 2003, and 2005, The Liberal’s took over $50 billion from the E.I. fund to balance the budget and state they had a surplus. That money must now be repaid. Can’t wait to see McCallum try and spin this.

By the way, surpluses for those three years combined was in the $30 billion dollar range, meaning without the E,I. funds there was actually a deficit in those years of billions of dollars.

I think this story might be worthy of it’s own post Joanne.

  9. Alberta Girl says:

I guess that bursts the Libs bubble about how they left a 12 billion dollar surplus. Yeah – on the backs of you and I!!!! Somehow, I am not surprised.

  10. paulsstuff says:

“The budgetary surplus was estimated at $10.4 billion for the April 2002 to March 2003 period”.

“The budgetary surplus is estimated at $7.6 billion for the April 2003 to March 2004 period”.

“April 2005 to March 2006: budgetary surplus of $8.4 billion, net of anticipated costs related to Bill C-48″.

So using those figures we come up with a total of $26.4 billion in surpluses. The court ruling says $54 billion was taken from the E.I. fund for those three years against the law.

So doing the math, that leaves a shortfall of $27.4 billion dollars for those three years in deficit spending.

Hey Liberal’s, remind me again how you are the party of fiscal prudence and responsibility.

  11. Ruth says:

I certainly hope we hear Scott Brison and John McCallum talk to the media and tell us how they managed to have the surplus they are always talking about. Get the truth out to the people that don’t go on blogs.

  12. Alberta Girl says:

So let me get this straight – during this time of economic crisis, when the Tories are trying their best to keep us out of deficit and weather this storm; something the Liberal Party did to make themselves look better than they are; now threatens to actually put us into deficit because it has to be paid back.

    Thanks Libs!!

  13. frmgrl says:

Expect the MSM to bury this story quickly. They don’t want this to be out front in center as it might tarnish the “excellent fiscal management” of their favorite party.

Now if this Conservatives did this, well you would hear it shouted from the roof tops every 15 minutes, huge headlines in the papers for the next two weeks or more.

I’m not shocked. The Liberals had been playing shell games for years.

  14. kathy says:

“I wonder how Iggy is going to handle the breaking news that the Liberals BROKE THE LAW in how they handled EI”.

    Good point Alberta Girl.
CTV News stated that the redirection of the EI funds was okay up to a point? CTV News did not explain up to what point or was that point compromised by the LPC?

Apparently, the LPC did not have the financial expertise to fix the problem they created and bungled badly, all attempts to right their wrong.

Flashback to Michael Ignatieff’s comments yesterday when he infers that the LPC know better than the Gov’t how to handle the economic crisis. Yikes!

  15. Jen says:

and the opposition party have the gall and audacity throughout these years to blame the prime minister Stephen Harper and Mulroney.
Where in the hell were those useless MSM when this was taking place.
I am ticked off- we cannot allow the liberals to resume power for the sake of our country workers E.I. The liberals will steal again.
When canadians were begging for money; the liberals were enjoying it(money)

  16. Lycan Stark says:

Well. The Liberals as stewarts of good governance and fiscal prudence? Deficit slayers? Yet another Liberal talking point totally and utterly discredited.

  17. wilson says:

The Bloc haunted the Liberals for years about the EI theft,
but the hypocritical Bloc now want to partner with the LPC…..

  18. Jen says:

Again!! the prime minister is faced with another dilemma on top of the crisis economy. Can you imagine the lawsuits, I pray that the people sue the living daylights of the liberals from Chretien down and MSM for their silence (providing if they knew about it back then but kept it a secret from the public).

  19. Joanne says:

    New post up.

  20. NeilD says:

The Supreme Court of Canada ruling says that the Liberals were wrong in setting EI rates without going to parliament for authorization.
It was a cabinet decision and that was illegal in that it was “a violation of the principle of no taxation without representation”.

That’s certainly going to look bad for the Liberals but they’ll argue that the Supreme Court actually backs them in the diversion of funds (the $54 billion) to help balance the books since the ruling doesn’t say that diverting those funds was illegal.

The ruling also doesn’t say anything about repaying the $54,000,000,000 that was re-allocated and it gives the government 12 months to respond.

The $54 billion was used to balance the budget and fund new training programs for the unemployed.

Here’s an interesting tidbit from the CTV website that has a story on this ruling.
The debate over the misuse of EI funds began when Finance Minister Paul Martin, under Prime Minister Jean Chretien, brought in new eligibility rules to make it harder for the unemployed to collect benefits.
Could these be the same rules that the Libs now want eliminated?

” My gut feel about this Iggy guy from day one is that he would ratchet-up the famed ‘Liberal Arrogance and Entitlement’ to an even higher level … if that’s possible.”

Dave, I feel the same as you. He comes across as EXTREMELY arrogant and snobbish. Just what we need, eh?

Someone please hunt down Paulie Martin. I want to hear his stutterings on the EI decision today. Heh.

  22. MaryT says:

What else is hiding in the bushes of liberal wrongdoing. No wonder they need to get back to the trough. It will take another few years to find all the theft.
As for Iggy telling PMSH to walk down that hill. I say, you start walking up the hill. What catastrophic consequences did PMSH almost cause. Oh I forgot, liberals and ndp and bloc might have to raise their own money. Regardless how the media spins this, that is the reason for the fuss. And I think it was put in there on purpose to flush the stooges out into the open. And I will never believe this coup was not in the works before the last election call. PMSH knew about it, and pulled the plug to flush them out.
Think back to the debates, very little attacks on anyone but PMSH, and same goes for the whole campaign.
Layton out there applying to be PM. What did he know.
Why was there such fear of a majority. The plot failed because the liberals lost seats and PMSH gained seats. But it simmered on the back burner and PMSH was not going to allow them to spring it and thus the stmt with the poison pill. The budget better have a great reduction to the 1.95/vote in it.

  23. Alberta Girl says:

“Could these be the same rules that the Libs now want eliminated”

    Hee Hee – I think so…..

Yesterday on MDL – Iggy was scarfing about Harper being a “master strategist”.

Wonder what he thinks this morning?

  24. Sol says:

Iggy wouldn’t have even been in Canada when Chretien/Martin broke the law. I bet he uses that to his advantage, but it sure doesn’t say much about his ability to understand how corrupt the Libranos were.

I’m still calling for a Belinda Stronach comeback. As I wrote earlier she’s in the Globe today rallying the grassroots to stand up and make their voices hears re: their right to choose their leader.

Also I nearly barfed when I read Kinsella’s posts fawning over the professor.

  25. Liz J says:

Iggy has some work to do to sell himself to the rural folks who have no trouble identifying s**t in any form.

He did say on TV he’d be smelling the barns, so please
come on out to the country, Iggy, we’ll give you something to sniff.

Kinsella is the big “sella” for Iggy, their latest Joe Boy to put up to attempt to fool the people to gain power.
This ruling handed down from the SC on the $54 billion plus the Liberals illegally took from EI will take some explaining. One thing for sure, it will complicate their scheme to overthrow the government.

  26. Joanne, I think Ignatieff deserves some scorn for his appointment, but I won’t be too nit-picky until he actually does something infuriating. Like all leaders, I prefer to view them as a clean slate and them watch them smash it up.

  27. When I look at Iggy, I wonder whether he can be out at night only, with daylight giving him a rash. I also wonder how many litres of blood he has to suck out of people’s necks on a nightly basis.

To anyone who’s scared, don’t despair. There’s always that trusty old wooden stake …
