CBC interview with PM Harper this afternoon

Via Sammy in comments:

…the big interview is at 3:45 eastern. cbc has been putting up the reminder frequently. Anyone gonna blog it for me?????

Well? Any Blogging Tories planning to live-blog the interview?

Readers are invited to live-blog in comments.

Update: From Potato in comments:

"I can’t watch the interview right now, but judging by the comments here it’s obvious that Harper is making Mansbridge interrupt him."

Because everything is always Stephen Harper’s fault.

A great post here from Conservative Reporter: Well done Mr. Prime Minister…

And in case you missed it – Prime Minister Harper given International Leadership Award.

    PMSH AMAZING! MANSBRIDGE a bully!

  11. JLK AB says:

Have you reached out in the past week.
PM there’s no one to reach out to
I think the big national parties should work together

  12. Bec says:

    Re mansbridge vs lloyd….

hHHAHAHAHAH right Joanne! Caught myself half way through. My typing skills were never my PRIORITY!! lol

  13. frmgrl says:

PM Harper sure on his game today! Well done PMSH!

  14. JLK AB says:

Wife says that after hearing mansbridges attack mode just now, the debates were a triad conspiracy attack.

  15. C.C. says:

The CBC just got a letter from me. I touched on Mansbridge not letting Harper finish or interrupting him. Also, that I was impressed at the PM’s answers, that, in fact wasn’t at all intimidated by him(Mansbridge).

Ended with Harper’s doing a remarkable job under the challenges of a so obviously biased media.

Get those pens going folks.(er….fingers typing)

  16. C.C. says:

p.s. – I saw a clip of Harper at Ted Roger’s funeral earlier this morning. The PM likely did the interview right after that. If so….he’s done splendidly.

  17. Bec says:

    Sammy, a SUMMARY

Peter Mansbridge came out swinging, extremely confrontational. Questioned the stimulas package and lack of one. Interrupted every answer before it was answered. PMSH, “excuse me let me finish, many times”

    Big 3 bailout same scenario
    Porougation- same scenario….get the drift

It is “hard to make priorities”

I had to decide if I should type or throw a shoe at the TV!! lol

  18. potato says:

I can’t watch the interview right now, but judging by the comments here it’s obvious that Harper is making Mansbridge interrupt him.

  19. Joanne says:

Gah! Good thing I didn’t promise to live-blog. My internet was down for a few minutes.

Mansbridge was rude. Harper had to keep asking him to allow him to finish his sentence.

Ha-ha! Potato, just caught on now with your comment. ;)

  20. Sol says:

I actually think that Harper was excellent. He’s not the least bit concerned about what Mansbridge is doing and, the fact that he’s actually asking him more than once to let him finish means to me that the PM’s in control.

Harper just demonstrated how to turn a hostile interview to his advantage. Must have read Kinsella’s books and specifically the chapter that cautions that the media is the enemy.

Nicely done Mr. PM – Mansbridge would do well to remember just WHO is boss is…..WE ARE.

  21. MaryT says:

Hasn’t been on yet in AB but I will definetly watch very closely, after the above comments.

  22. Greg says:

It’s not easy being a news anchor. Mansbridge wants Harper out so he can start working on his senate seat, or governor general gig.

  23. Bec says:

Mary T,….yes I’m an Albertan..it was on shortly after 2

Actually Sol, PMSH didn’t need WK’s book…he has always been like that and gets better but maybe WK learned from him….lol

  24. Gabby in QC says:

Apparently the interview will be repeated during The National, both on Newsworld and regular CBC.

  25. Joanne says:

Does anyone know if the Coalition contract is binding now that the leadership of the Liberal Party is changing? Mulcair says it is because Iggy signed it.

The NDP and the Bloc still plan to get rid of Harper no matter what.

  26. Bec says:

    http://thealbertaardvark.blogspot.com/2008/12/we-undersigned.html

Go and check out the actual signatures From LPOC…Mark Garneau, does not do the “printing” at all and Ignatieff does not print…. Leadership? hha

    Could get interesting….

  27. wilson says:

The coalition agreement doesn’t say interm leader does it?
Iggy is not leader until May.
But then again, signing the doc for the GG certainly does show ‘intent’.

Was that an interview? It seemed more like Mansbridge looking for an argument, one sided, his.

re:Mansbridge saying PMSH flipflopped on his Sept speech:
Prorogation was best for the country and the economy and GG agreed,
and judging by how fast Dion and Rae were dumped, if there had been a vote PMSH did have the confidence of the House.

  28. wilson says:

PMSH invited Iggy to talks, a couple of times (federal parties- shut out Ducey again)

  29. MaryT says:

OOPS, forgot about the time difference. Had an appointment so missed it. From the comments it sounds like PMSH won.
Watching Newman, listened to Rae make his excuses. But, according to the lib head honch, Feb 27th is the last day a candidate can enter the leadership race. Maybe Rae will opt back in.
Also financing another election will be no problem as the libs are expecting refunds on election expenses that will go toward the debt.
Now they are trying to make it sound like PMSH will be in bed with the Bloc if they support him.
Yes, they voted with him last parliament, but PMSH never promised them a final veto, and they never signed a paper they would never vote no confidence.
The media is trying to say this is a lib/dipper coalition and the Bloc just promised no vote to bring the government down. But, what would they demand in the budget to vote for it, or the throne speech, or culture grants or whatever else. There is no way around it, the Bloc would really be the government in coalition clothes.
Iggy signed it so is bound by it. Regardless, if he tries to bring programs fwd, that benefit Quebec more than the ROC, he will be tarred.

  30. Sammy says:

Thanks guys..and by the sound of things,I better put away any heavy objects before I watch the repeat tonite!Letters people,we need to send letters,or start phoning cbc complaint line.there have been so many blatant biased remarks, and the press conf.with Rae was ridiculous!I saw at srart,Bob winking at ‘??reporters’..and I use the term loosely.Lots of giggling..like it was a tight knit little group of friends.
BTW,there was some lib stooge on Newman, and Don actually asked him a few tough questions about finances..are the libs prepared to fight an election financially? this guy, frittered around, and Don said he had heard that the reason for the uproar was the vote-funding cut,and that the libs NEEDED that money as it was already spent (to repay borrowed money) to fight last election! Also, when don asked re lib membership numbers, and it is ONLY 60,000!Soooo,kiddies,sign up,send money, just not to the LIBS!

  31. paulsstuff says:

Calition agreement is only binding if government loses confidence vote, so…….

    Sorry Jack and Gille.

  32. Sammy says:

Mulcair on Newman..he is a horrible spiteful man! Jim Karryig- i give up how to spell it-spoke about how dirty the dippers are,and I believe it.
    Must watch..Christie Blatchford on Duff.
Please,PMSH,go do a one on one sit down with Duff!

  33. Bec says:

“But then again, signing the doc for the GG certainly does show ‘intent’.”

I think that clearly the GG knows, there would be a mass of civil unrest if she allowed it. IMHO

  34. MaryT says:

Is there a constitutional expert around. The dipper on Newman said if there is a defeat of the govt in Jan, the GG has to give the coalition power as it is still less than four months since the last election.
I read somewhere it was 42 days. Is there any constitutional law to deal with this.
If the coalition thinks it will get power in Jan, how can Iggy say he doesn’t support it.
Let’s not get sideswipped on this.
It was mentioned the libs have sixty thousand members. How many votes did it get. Lots of non members voted liberal but will they again. I also heard Rae say that he was getting lots of donations. Does he keep them or turn them over to the party.
Lizzy seems to have been vaporized.
Come on PMSH, fill those senate seats asap. He would get bad press if he did but what else is new.

  35. MaryT says:

1.27 billion surplus for NFLD. Almost enough to send equalization to Ont and Que.

  36. C.C. says:

I can’t recall where I heard it but someone said that the Coaltion will be a coalition of convenience for the Liberals. They can use it IF Harper doesn’t give them what they want in the budget, or they can choose not to call it a coaltion if they pass the budget.

I think that over the next few weeks that the PM should state publicly and very often that he’s still waiting for the ideas to come forward for the budget from the 3 oppositions.

Also re: Liberal leadership – Iggy’s only the interim leader. He can be voted out and replaced by another if he/she comes forward in time for the convention.

Bob Rae was a complete jerk in his Q&A today and on Duffy. It’s like we saw his two personalities. One yesterday, where he was so passionate and angry about a coronation, getting red in the face..the whole nine yards. Today he’s all nice and almost flippant in his responses to Duffy.

  37. Liz J says:

Let’s suggest our PM do an interview with Mike Duffy. I’m sending off my suggestion now.

Yes, Mr Harper was very well composed and handled Petey quite well. I really think Mike Duffy would be much more respectful and fair.

Hopefully the PM has a list of people to fill the Senate seats. I’ve emailed him/his office on that subject more than once. I could even provide some people who would be great Senators if that’s a problem.

  38. MaryT says:

I hope someone has the video of Rae’s rant yesterday and his about face today. And we need lots of those clips of and gilles and dion and Rae.

  39. Bruce says:

If Iggy is stupid enough to keep pursuing this coalition and then the budget is voted down the Governor General has no choice, but to send Canadians to the polls to kick the Liberal/NDP abomination in their collective butt. If the GG sides with the coalition she’d find herself out of a job and without the “entitlements” that go with it so fast she’d be dizzy for weeks.

  40. bluetech says:

You can watch the interview now:

  42. The Duff would be overcome with emotion…
    I am sure of that…

Even when Duff disappoints me or temporarilly angers me…I gravitate towards him and hope his show stays on for a long time yet… stay healthy duff

thanks for this avenue to comment joanne…

  43. NeilD says:

I just watched the interview at http://www.cbc.ca/news/
and I liked how he handled himself.
He’s extending an olive branch to the Liberals and is dismissive of both the Bloc and NDP.
    NeilD

  44. Joanne says:

CR – I still like Duff too. He seems very genuine.

Neil, yes it was a fantastic interview. Harper didn’t lose his cool but he didn’t back down either. I am very proud of him. He still has my support – 100%.

  45. Sammy says:

Just watched the whole interview as well.Good thing I had locked up all the sharp objects,or I would have been tempted to do some serious damage to the tv!!
What will be really interesting,is to see tomorrow nights interviews.Wonder how many ways Petey can shove his nose up Iggy’s nether parts!And..how many times will he interrupt him?
Also,Wacked Jack is going to be on.Will Petey have the gonads to hit him hard?
And when for gawd’s sake are they going to quit dragging out every lib hack they can find to comment on his Igginess.Today it was a parade of coffin-dodging old senators just as full of Harper hate as the ‘juniors’ in cabinet. Is there NOTHING else going on in the world? At this point I would even welcome some scary global warming stuff from David Suzuki!!!

  46. paulsstuff says:

When you sit back and take a look at this whole coalition thing, it’s quite amusing.

A week ago the msm was telling us Harper was finished. Now they are lining up for the chance to interview him.

Dion once again thought he would outsmart Harper and become PM. Now he has had to step down as Liberal leader.

Boob Rae ran from one microphone to the next, explaining it was he who would be crossing Canada selling the coalition and become Liberal leader. Now he has also become a chump. Anyone notice he has not mentioned selling the coalition to Canadian’s anymore.

Layton and Duceppe also thought they had outwitted the PM. Layton thinking he was finally going to get one of those cabinet ministers Limo’s, and Duceppe thinking he had hit the motherload in being able to get whatever he wanted for Quebec. With Iggy as leader those hopes appear to be long gone.

And finally Iggy himself. He has now acheived his goal of becoming Liberal leader. But he has damaged his reputation and that of the Liberal party in the next election by refusing to distance himself from the coalition until polls showed just how stupid the whole idea was. Should make for wonderful attack ads against all the opposition parties come the next election.

As for our wonderful PM, all I can say is:

    Well played sir:0)

  47. C.C. says:

Paul – don’t forget also, the party support base are furious at how the Iggy coronation panned out.

The folks over at Calgary Grit aren’t particularly happy. Only over at WK’s are they partying it seems.

  48. Alberta Girl says:

And over at the CBC website everyone’s favorite feminist Harper Hater Heather Mallick writes her usual tripe.

Of course – she slags Harper as being the cause of all this ruckus and the fact that he “shut” down parliament during one of the worst economic crisis… yeah right, Heather – make it sound like they were going to be working through xmas!!

What I can’t figure out is how these people can actually try to foist these untruths onto the Canadian reader.

Anyhoooo….. here is my comment – I wonder if she’ll read it. You can read the whole sordid thing at cbc dot ca

“Heather, sweetie – he didn’t “shut down parliament” for seven weeks.

If you actually knew what you were talking about, you would know that parliament was going on a Christmas (am I allowed to say Christmas at the CBC) break as of this week – so whooopeeee – the GG prorogued for a whole 7 days

The government itself is still working – it’s not like they have gone on haitus to some warm climate.

But then, Heather, you know that; you are just ignoring the truth to take your Hate Harper to your writing.

So I would suggest that you have actually lied to your readers by creating the impression that MP’s would have been sitting in parliament over the next seven weeks.

Time to face it Heather – the people of Canada have spoken and 69% agreed that prorogation was the best move. And Heather, 69% is even more than the 62% that the Cabal of Losers claim gave them the right to overthrow the government.

I trust you will issue an apology regarding the falsehoods in this story.

    Thanks Heather.”

  49. bluetech says:

Prime Minister Harper did well tonight. I notice dark circles under his eyes and he was squinting a lot. He must have felt like he was in an interrogation room!Great stuff AG!!!
MSM is getting slagged big time tonight across the blogs
    Perhaps time for more e-mails.
Who is the MoP with the CBC in their portfolio?

  50. MaryT says:

Finally watched the whole thing. Being warned by the comments of what to watch for made it more enjoyable.
As for Heather, she is hopeless.
If no government employee gets paid for 7 weeks then I will believe the govt shut down. But, as mentioned above, it is only for one extra week and everyone forgets the HofC was going on Christmas vacation starting Dec 12. And who wouldn’t like an extra week of vacation. I think the only reason there are still so many lib/dipper mps still in Ottawa is they are afraid to go home to face their constituents.
They will get an earful if they have any townhall meetings or other attempts to meet them.

  51. MaryT says:

For a change of pace, visit Alberta Aardvark for a lesson in coalition math. Funny stuff.

  52. Joanne says:

    Great response to Mallick, AG!

BTW, is anyone noticing that their comments aren’t getting through here? I’m trying out a new spam filter and am afraid that some of them may have been lost. Please email me if your comments don’t get published. Thanks.

  53. Liz J says:

Two columns in the National Post today say it all:

“The Divine-Right-to-govern Party” by Lorne Gunter.

“Michael, we hardly know ye” by Kelly McParland.

It’s getting more bizarre by the hour with the Liberals.

This Ignatieff dude they’ve been fixing to anoint for some time is still a mystery and an unknown quantity.

The crazy for power Liberals are frantically trying to pull a rabbit out of the hat and gain power using the very entrails of the democratic process to do it.

Oh to be a fly on the wall when Iggy meets with the PM to talk economics. If the truth be known, Iggy has less qualifications for the job than Dion but he has all the right qualities Liberals seek, it’s all about window dressing and gobbledygook to fool the people.

If they think they can pull a coup with Iggy at the head to lead the country at this critical time, we will have proof they care nothing about Canada or the democratic process. This stuff happens in banana republics, we get to ELECT our PM’s and they’re going to find that out if they try any fancy maneuvers.

  54. Sammy says:

Just to give you an idea of the venom of some Lib.commenters at G&M this am on the column ‘Iggy makes the journey’..this comment is gone now,and it makes me sick to even type it,but we need to be aware of the absolute HATE for PMSH:
    from Salem Shaworski from Ottawa:
“fat boy Harper’s sucking on his inhaler for dear life.Keep suckin’ fat boy,and enjoy having your white trash wife guide it in,in your free digs. The party’s over scum!
This is just vile, and there were some commenter’s took this fool to task. Please,if there are any Libs trolling here, how in the world do you justify this trash?

  55. Liz J says:

Sammy, that is stunningly sicko, the fact someone would write it and more stunning that it would be allowed to pass screening. Doesn’t look good for the G&M, it does tell us a lot about them. When it comes to hateful comments about the PM they’re allowed.

SALEM SHAWORSKI is lucky to be living in Canada, (if he is a citizen). There are places in the world where comments like that would not be tolerated.

  56. MaryT says:

Keith Boag just now saying that the PM did not apologize or anything yesterday. That is what the cbc want, PMSH kissing their feet, or perhaps higher up, and he wont do it. But, Keith also said that Iggy is still lukewarm to the coalition and might be easier to work with and the budget might pass.
But, he also said, he could not see how trust could be negotiated and Layton says the House has lost trust in the PM.
Polling and donations will probably be the main reason for the libs to say no to the coalition and pass the budget.

  57. C.C. says:

The PM has nothing at all to apologize for. The CBC is vastly out of touch with the feeling of Canadians. I sure that Mr. Harper knew that much going into the interview.

The CBC is notorious for setting folks up. Didn’t work this time on Harper so now they’re trolling with the NDP who are HUGE losers in this coalition deal.

I’m pretty sure that most Canadians don’t want a marshmallow for a leader or an ass-kisser either for that matter.

Perhaps if the PM gave the CBC their own reason to kiss his ass we’d see the shoe on another foot?

  58. Liz J says:

In order for the PM to give the CBC a reason to kiss his ass we have to give him a majority. This is the real reason they’re working to make sure he doesn’t get one.

The talking heads and management at CBC could care less about who the Liberals put up to lead them, how corrupt they are or how they connive to get and attain power. Nothing matters except power for the Liberals. The whole CBC is teeming with Liberals and many are married to, and have family working in the media. The deck is well stacked against Conservatives.

  59. May says:

Thanks for the link NeilD. I am blown away that was excellent! The PM was clearly in control despite Mansbridges’ ridiculously rude behavior. He was firm and clear in his answers but stayed polite and pleasantly smiled at times when I would have snapped at Mansbridge. I am so proud of the man we ELECTED!

Finally, I am really pleased he put to rest the pathetic lie the lefties are spreading; claiming the PM EVER tried to form a coalition in the past. For goodness sake, you know they are reaching when they take a push for throne speech concessions and mutual voting against Paul Martin’s government as some sort of hidden conspiracy. It bothers me that some people believe this junk even though the truth was widely reported at the time (for a change) so anyone with a memory knows it’s a lie. The liberals always try the “you are just as bad as we are deep down” line. No, they are not. No one is as bad as the hydra (my new name for the coup coalition).

In Europe coalitions are elected as such; so that comparison ends there. What the hydra is trying to do has never been attempted (probably never imagined) in all the Commonwealth. The King-Byng affair was completely different. King’s coalition was ELECTED as a coalition and formed government; but the deal broke apart after (literally) three days in Parliament. When the coalition dissolved and King’s liberals lost the confidence of the house, Byng simply gave governance to the party that had been elected with the most seats: Meighen’s Conservatives. That actually makes sense and is as different from the coup attempt as night and day.

Canada is now unique in history as the only country in the Commonwealth where the opposition parties came together to attempt a coup; let alone doing it with the separatist party dedicated to the breakup of the country! Treasonous wretches! There are other examples outside the Commonwealth of course; but they are almost all third world and most turn violent. Not the kind of thing we want to emulate.

I thought I was angry after the sponsorship scandal. Ha! That was a puddle compared to the ocean I feel now. The parties who are participating in this coalition (Bloc, NDP, Liberal and Green) have lost my vote forever. I’ve made a promise to myself that this day onward they will never have my vote as long as I live. I don’t vote for monstrous, power hungry traitors. That leaves me with one option doesn’t it? I finally broke down and mailed my membership form. I hung back for a long time but this is the last straw and the three stooges (four counting May) have pushed me firmly in the Tory camp in their frightening lust for power. The image of Dion, Duceppe and Layton signing, shaking hands and smiling over that contract is forever burned in my brain.

Sorry about the rant Jo. This has been simmering for a while and I had to get it off my chest.

  60. Hydra Slayer says:

I’ll ask again: What’s going on?
I can understand the CBC trying to protect their butts from cuts. I can understand where the red Star is coming from. I can’t understand the change in tune in the pro-business papers like the G&M and Post that are now engaging in these character assassinations of the PM were just months ago they endorsed him for election. Is the Canadian business establishment lining up behind Ignatieff and pulling the rug out from under PMSH?
The media are just the tools of the big corporates. So who is pulling the strings and why?

  61. JLK AB says:

I belong to a group of Cowboy Poets and western music singers. Our mandate is to preserve the culture and history of the west.
There is not one dollar of federal grant money available for us to take our cultural show on the road.Absolutely NOTHING!
BUT, the Quebec ‘artitistes’ tour the world on my dollar and squeal like 3 year olds with loaded diapers if they don’t get their entitlements!
