Yesterday’s events were quite dramatic – so much so that I needed to bury my head in a fiction book last night to get my mind off it for a while.
Today I’m thinking back to the promises of civility and cooperation in Parliament – all the while during which the opposition was busy cooking up this scheme.
Canadians need stable government right now. We need our Government to be able to concentrate on the global economic crisis, and yet Ottawa is far from stable at the moment. How will this affect the markets – both now and if the coalition coup takes place?
How is this helpful? The Harper Government has removed the poison pills and yet the opposition parties continue with their plan. Why? Is it a personal grudge? Do they hate Stephen Harper that much that they will grab power and to give the governance of this country to a man who has not yet been democratically elected as leader and as PM?
What has the Harper Government done that is so egregious as to warrant this kind of political chaos in our country and its likely devastating blow to our economic stability?
As Lorne Gunter points out, the Liberals sat out many votes during the previous Parliament when the issues appeared to be more important. First he mentions the complicity of some MSM:
What the Tories underestimated, though, was the absolute and utter shamelessness of the Liberals — and to a lesser extent the NDP — not to mention the willingness of most media to bite uncritically on the opposition version of events …
…And let’s not forget the Liberals’ Afghanistan volte-face. Last February, Stephane Dion said he was "absolutely unwavering" in his commitment to end our Armed Forces’ combat mission in Afghanistan by February, 2009. If the government didn’t commit to that target date, he and his caucus would pull the Tories down. Yet. two weeks after Mr. Dion’s exercise in tub thumping, he and his party agreed with the Tories that the combat mission should continue into 2011.
In short, there has been no single principle the Liberals believed in strongly enough — not the environment, not peace, not open immigration — that they were willing to force an election. But threaten to cut off the nearly $8-million they extract from taxpayers each year to pay for office, staff, propaganda, conventions and the like — well, we have finally found the one hill on which they are prepared to die. ..
Andrew Coyne is one of the other three or four media pundits in Canada with a similar balanced view:
…But what am I saying? Notwithstanding the hundreds of column-inches attacking the Tories for their intolerable affront to opposition sensibilities, it is important to remember that the opposition’s sudden lurch for power had nothing to do with the impending loss of public funds. No, the reason they are absolutely forced to defeat the government this time, having declined to do so over Afghanistan, or global warming, or budgets 2006, 2007 ot 2008, is on account of the fall update. Nothing bespeaks the fierce urgency of now so much as an annual statistical review …
Why can’t the opposition wait a few weeks to see what the government has in store in its upcoming budget? And as both Sandy and Jacqueline Thorpe observe, the Harper government has already done more than many other countries to stimulate the economy, having foreseen some of these problems earlier.
But it never really was about the stimulus package.
It’s about a power-hungry opposition that can’t stand Stephen Harper and is hell-bent to take him down – whatever the cost to Canada.
The big question is, will Canadians put up with it? (Check out the Letters to the Editor at the Post – How low will the opposition sink?)
How will they feel about a coalition needing the support of the Bloc for every money bill that they attempt to pass? As Lorrie Goldstein points out, this could threaten our sovereignty and the stability of our entire country:
For the first time, a party dedicated to the political destruction of Canada, operating contrary to the wishes of the majority of Canadians outside and inside Quebec, holds the balance of power between competing federalist forces in a minority Parliament. That alone could reignite western separatism and tear Canada apart.
What exactly was Duceppe promised? Will money be siphoned from Alberta to Quebec?
And will the Coalition run as a unified left-wing party in the next election? Will the Bloc start running candidates all across the country?
Please voice your concerns to MPs, the Governor General, newspapers and radio talkshows before it is too late.

New Poll up – If the Government falls, what should the Governor-General do?
Update – From DWT in comments:
"…Jack ran in the last election on the premise that he wanted Harper’s job. He just didn’t tell Canadians how he planned on getting it."
Do you trust that man?

Gives greater reasoning for the Liberals’ true intention on the “gun registry”.
Regardless of the circumstances leading up to a prospective coalition government, we cannot deny that Harper was playing with fire when he inserted the removal of $30 million tax dollars to political parties. (And idea I heartily endorse, however it would have been an idea to put into play at a later date.) Had that not been there, I wonder if the Opposition would have acted so quickly to form a coalition at all.
The reality for Stephen Harper is that his political career will be over should this coalition government come to fruition. Someone will have to pay the fiddler for the Tories winning a strengthened minority only to see it evaporate in a mist of abysmal political strategy in less than two months.
All the NDP talking heads are claiming no deal was made. So I guess that means that either:
a) a deal was made and the talking heads are lying to do damage control, or
b) Layton was lying to try to take credit for something he didn’t do so he could impress his supporters.
Anyone here happen to catch Heather Hiscox interview with Pierre Pollievre this am? It was an absolute disgrace! She was openly mocking him,and anything he had to say..kept shooting him down, and arguing with him. She made comment to Pierre about having his ‘consevative talking points’ down pat,and pointed out that Pierre kept referring to the Bloc as ‘the separtists’ Pierre jumped on this, and asked HH if she was saying the Bloc weren’t separtists. It was just disgusting.Dewar from the dippers coming on next, see if she asks him some tough questions about this asinine deal with the separtists.
more tape released this am,and Charlie Angus from the Dippers seemed to have some tough questions for Layton on this unholy alliance. This is just hell…and I cannot believe how the media is just going along with this ride, and not holding the Libs/dippers to account.
I think this coalition has been in the works for some time and it didn’t matter what the economic statement said, it was a confidence vote and that’s what they were waiting for. Whenever WK announced that he was working for Ignatieff, he had a picture on his blog of the next PM. I very much believe it was all in the works then, and I don’t believe the Liberals knew nothing about the cozy arrangement with the Bloc.
We need an election now, worth every penny of the cost.
That’s just it, these fools are willing to bring down the government and put the country in turmoil to feed their egos, lust for power and socialist/Leftists agendas.
The very fact it was started by Layton and Duceppe before the fiscal update is proof they’re on a power grab. The Liberals are willing dupes because of the election funding and only because of the election funding, to say otherwise is a big lie.
We can understand why Ignatieff isn’t on board with their takeover scheme, he’d be a backbencher in Dionski’s troika, ditto Rae and LeBlanc who are running for leadership.
The whole thing is looking more like a comedic farce.
Harper flushed out the weasels, rats and snakes and that can’t be a bad thing totally.
We know any politicians worthy of office willing to put the country in turmoil at a critical time like this for political gain, is not fit to have their butts in the HOC period. We know who they are, we should know what to do next opportunity.
Joanne – as you were putting up the “new post”, I was typing out my comment so I have pasted it on this new post as well.
So we have a prime minister that saw this economic crisis coming; took steps to avoid what the rest of the world is undergoing; wins an election with MORE seats than he had before; continues to provide leadership that garners respect and accolades from the rest of the world; and yet, we have an opposition that is going to overthrow that government because they don’t think he has done anything?
Only in Canada, or some third world country, could this farce actually take place. I have said it before and i say it again, Canada must be the laughingstock of the world.
The opposition is not about SAVING Canada, the opposition is about wrestling power from a democratically elected government under the pretense that more people voted for them???
I do believe Harper pulled the pin on their little plan before they had all the ducks in a row and now we can see it for what it really is – sour grapes because they didn’t win.
I also believe that the MSM are licking their chops over this; both for the “stories” but also because they see the ultimate revenge in overthrowing their enemy, Harper.
God Help Us All!!
Thank you Ruth.
You are one of the few who seems to grasp the issue here.
There was nothing that PMSH could have done to prevent this coalition from taking place and bringing down the Government.
The best Mr. Harper could do was to change their schedule before they were better organized.
Does anyone really believe that had the Government not brought up the political subsidies, this coalition would not have gone forward?
I agree with Ruth – Kinsella hasn’t been a covert as he’d like his blog vistors to believe. The change of Iggy’s tune now adds him to the list of hypocrites propped up this new Coalition of Old White Guys(And Elizabeth May – she’s got to fit into this too I suspect)
I also believe that Harper got wind of the coalition during or towards the end of the election, and I think that the adding of the subsidy issue was an attempt by Harper to flush this all out, as it’s being played out now.
The true colours of the three oppositions have been fully exposed – it’s all about their greed and personal egos.
What’s really annoying to me is how the media and talking heads for the oppositions keep suggesting that it’s Harper’s fault for not doing what he said and working with the other parties – In my opinion, when translated that means that the opposition parties wanted it all their way or no way – most grade school children could tell you that that in no way represents cooperation.
In addition to the letters I’ve sent to major new media, MPs, I’ve sent a few letters of encouragement to Stephen Harper. I’ve given him my support and permission to do what’s necessary to save himself, the party and the country.
He’s not ever been given the respect by the MSM or the other parties that he deserves.
“we can understand why Ignatieff isn’t on board with their takeover scheme”.
Last article I read about this, he is to be the new unelected Prime Minister. So much for the news interviews yesterday saying he didn’t know anything about it.
…We need an election now, worth every penny of the cost…
Agreed, Ruth.
This is an affront to democracy. It stinks to high heaven. Time to write to the GG and ask her to call an election if the government is brought down.
Otherwise there will be a lot of angry Canadians – especially out west.
“Do they hate Stephen Harper that much that they will grab power and to give the governance of this country to a man who has not yet been democratically elected as leader and as PM?”
Yes, that appears to be the sole motivating factor – their hatred of PM Harper and their lust for power.
A much better scenario would be:
1) PM prorogue parliament until Jan. 27 – this gives the entitled egos all kinds of time to fight amongst each other over turf and command of the media quotes.
2) come down with a budget that includes a stimulus package, and enough goodies to choke a horse, and maybe even begin to change the rules a bit and disallow parties like the Bloc to remain in the leg.
If need be promise enough to send us into deficit like the Oppos. want.
3) THEN call the election and let the people decide once again whether they want a government who stands up for them and their families or a government beholding to seperatists, old white guys, and cryptic politicians looking for payback?
I urge all Blogging Tories to drop the MP and your MP a line today in support.
Anyone using the argument the coalition has the majority of the house think of this. Conservative’ ran 308 candidates in the election.
The “coalition” ran a total of 972. If you want to be fair call an election, run one coalition candidate in each riding against the Conservative candidate.
Then if you win, take power. My guess is you won’t.
Yeah Sol, I’m starting to agree with the idea of proroguing Parliament. I’ve been flip-flopping on this, but it might be a good idea for the sake of our temporary stability.
The “coalition” ran a total of 972. If you want to be fair call an election, run one coalition candidate in each riding against the Conservative candidate.
Then if you win, take power. My guess is you won’t.
Excellent point!
If they do prorogue, then the Seniors won’t get the help they wanted with their RRIF’s, unless there was some way to let the economic update pass before giving the opposition time for their non-confidence motion.
Time to reach out to members of the opposition to cross the floor or sit as independents.
I cannot even begin to define the feeling of utter resignation and disbelief I have that something like this can even happen in Canada.
The fact that the majority of the MSM are actually BLAMING the Harper government for this proves that there really is no hope to stop it other than from the ground up.
Where are all the polling firms doing their polls showing the majority of Canadians want this take over. They were all over the place in the election giving us minute by minute updates on the thinking of Canadians. And now – nothing. Something tells me they know the answer they would get and have been told not to do any polls.
Welcome to CANADAISCAN
There are so many hurdles for the Opps to clear before Dion/Iggy becomes PM, it’s not even funny. From Scott Reid’s column in yesterday’s Globe, with his outrageous “kill him [Harper], kill him dead”, it’s obvious that he knows the Libs are in deep deep trouble if this coup doesn’t get pulled off, and the “king” survives.
Anyway, seeing as we are in unchartered territory, here’s a couple of things my junkie brain recalled that might be pertinent:
About three years ago, Harper hired private investigators to look into Adscam. Nothing has been made public about those invetigators since then. This might be a good time to release some of their findings.
If Harper loses the confidence of the House, nobody (except prior PMs and GGs) knows what kind of conversation he might have with her. Everyone just assumes he will ask for an election. But how about if he says: “I’m resigning as PM. Lawrence Cannon will be the new PM. He will present a new throne speech and cabinet in 15 days”.
That seems like a reasonable alternative for the GG to pursue. I’m convinced that Harper is way more of a team player (Canadian team first, Conservative team second) than a “dictator”, as his detractors blindly assume he is.
In the CPAC documentary on him from two years ago (which I have on tape), his closest friends said he likes to pull surprises on his opponents. We haven’t seen everything yet that Harper has up his sleeve.
The electorate of Canada has spoken and has did not chose the Liberals, the NDP and most certainly not the Bloc to lead this country. This situation highlights the insanity of allowing a separtist party to sit in our HOC. I will not be governed by these people and it is now time for the ROC to demand a referendum on the cost of keeping Quebec in Canada.
The time is now to defend our democracy,if that requires another election so be it. I would rather see a CPC loss than submitt to a coalition of separtists, unions and liars.
check out “don’t believe the hype”(WK’s)
we’re back at playing “who do you trust” are we?
At the moment I don’t trust any of the media pundits because they’re looking like bad actors in propping up this Coalition of Egos.
So lets assume for one second that the GG gives the go ahead for the Opposition to give birth to their farce of coalition with a political party that is okay with a threat to our national unity. Fine, have at it.
And when this fragile coalition inevitably fails, which it will, Harper won’t even have to pretend to be coy about the prospects of a Tory majority. After three elections in five years resulting in three different minority governments and now this farce of a coalition that no one voted to have, he will ask the people for a majority mandate to finally bring some stability to government. And they will scramble to the ballot box to give it to him, all thanks in the end to a power hungry Opposition that was planning all along to thwart their electoral will and defeat this current government before it even had the chance to get going.
So go ahead Dion, Layton. You’ve made your final gambit. And instead of retiring with some dignity, you’re going to throw every shred of it away with this crap shoot. You’ve done the one thing that will finally guarantee a Tory majority. I really don’t know how to thank you.
Yeah,Janet,we have spoken and the Liberals and Dippers have no respect for our rights in this democracy to choose. We didn’t choose them, so they’re going to use every tool available to seize power. How much better off are we than a Banana Republic if that can happen?
This deal with the Bloc has the potential to ruin the country. Nothing is too much to cede for Liberals to regain their hold on power.
Hopefully there’s enough opposition to this dangerous political troika to put an end to it. No help from the MSM, they’re loving it. Blind fools and tools of the LPC no matter how decrepit it is.
“Coalition of Egos”
I LOVE it!!
Union leaders are anointed so why should it be any different for the left.
Poll up at CFRA (Ottawa) …
What is your advice to Liberal leadership frontrunner Michael Ignatieff?
Support moves to defeat the Conservatives and back Stephane Dion for interim Prime Minister in a coalition with the NDP and Bloc … 8.37%
Run, don’t walk, from this coalition scenario and go public to explain why … 89.5%
Other … 2.06%

We should ask the GG to call an election and have the Coalition of Egos actually run as a party.
Then the results will be democratic.
I will contact my friends in toronto to let them KNOW about the dangerous statement made by Scott in case the MSM has not told them; to also remind them that the MSM has formed its coupe d’ etat against the prime minister.
We all had a sense that something was brewing but could not put our finger on it- now we know. Still the MSM is the major problem we face they support only corrupt parties which they have proven on a daily basis. In Hunter’s blog the prime minister received two standing ovations at OPEC wHICH we did not see; why, the MSM want canadians to continue living in a world of ignorance. THE MSM ARE TOO BLAME no doubt. they help the liberals everyway possible .
How can you run a government when the MSM, THE LIBERALS NDP AND THE BLOC ARE AGAINST THE PRIME MINISTER, THE MILITARY,CANADIANS.
I hope that with God’s Blessings that He WILL continue to help, guide and give the prime minister the inner strength to deal with the corrupt coalition for the sake of canadians.
It is not going to be easy for him since he can’t get his word out because the MSM blocks him, misqoute him and as usual manipulate the public.
“There is no wiretap crime under the Criminal Code of Canada if someone is invited to participate in a conference call and then releases the recording publicly.
A spokesman for Prime Minister Stephen Harper said an unnamed Conservative had been “invited” to participate on the call.
“Maybe the invitation was meant for the Bloc, and they accidentally invited us,” said Dimitri Soudas.
“We were invited. When you get invited somewhere you have the opportunity to choose to participate or not participate.”
Two disparate segments of the recording totalling about 15 minutes were delivered Sunday. The senior PMO official distributing the recordings suggested more will be revealed later this week. ”
Halifax Chronicle Herald
We’ve sent our letters to the MP’s and GG., so now it’s time to send one to the author of every opinion piece in the newspapers. Don Martin needs some of our input today along with Chantal Herbert.
Everyone is so quick to blame our PM, sure hope he doesn’t resign and go back to Calgary. We have to stand up to the MSM now before it’s too late.
Iggy is an arrogant Russian aristocrat with the greatest entitlement mentality.
Another thing to keep an eye on.
Remember Dion going into hiding for more than a week after his election defeat? He was said to be in “consultations” about his future. Don’t be surprised if those supposed consultations were actually talks with Layton about forming a coalition and taking power at the first chance, hence Dion’s decision to remain leader until May.
Calgary Junkie – you wrote our PM might resign. Regardless, if there is a new Conservative leader, parliament will still not work. The only way it can work is for a majority government. That is why PM Harper went ahead with all this – he knew about the coalition from before the election. Remember what Duceppe said during the English debate ‘only one sitting at this table will be Prime Minister and it is not you two”, talking to Layton and Dion. At that moment, something changed around the table – at least I thought. PM Harper knows to go to an election, to ask and win a majority. What I do not understand is why the NDP do not go along with PM Harpers plan to do away with the $1.95 – this would eliminate the Greens, and most of the Bloc – leaving Quebec open for pickings and Quebec is fed up with Federal Liberals… it is a win win for the NDP and they chose this? It makes no sense to me.
THE LIBERALS WANT TO BAIL THEMSELVES OUT OF DEBT LOANS WHICH THEY OWE. WHAT BETTER WAY TO DO SO IS TO FORM A COALITION WITH THE NDP AND THE BLOC WITH THE MSM TO HELP THEM, AGAINST THE PRIME MINISTER. THEY NEED TO SUCK EVERY DIME FROM US TO PAY OFf THEIR BILLS.
The NDP WANTS TO BAIL OUT THEIR UNIONS, AUTOMOTIVES; SHUT DOWN THE OIL-SANDS, MILITARY, RAISE TAXES TO MAJORS BUSINESSES WHICH WILL CAUSE THEM TO LEAVE CANADA LEAVING BEHIND THOUSANDS OF UNEMPLOYED PEOPLE.
THE BLOC ONLY WANT THEIR SEPARATION PAPERS WITH MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO HELP SUSTAIN THEM WHILE THEY ARE SEPARATED FROM CANADA OR ELSE THIS SCHEME OF THEIRS WILL NOT GO THROUGH.
http://renemarie.com/images/products/thumb/cd7.jp
Worthy of the three traitors.
We’re mad as hell and we’re not going to take it anymore!!!
“What I do not understand is why the NDP do not go along with PM Harpers plan to do away with the $1.95 – this would eliminate the Greens, and most of the Bloc – leaving Quebec open for pickings and Quebec is fed up with Federal Liberals… it is a win win for the NDP and they chose this? In a word – power.
Jack ran in the last election on the premise that he wanted Harper’s job. He just didn’t tell Canadians how he planned on getting it.
nac says: “Calgary Junkie – you wrote our PM might resign.”
That’s an option for him. Whether he uses it, or whether the new PM gets the support of Parliament, is a big unknown. But I suspect the coalition hasn’t factored that possibility into their plans. Like I said, I’m sure Harper is much more of a team player than a “dictator”.
If the Opps believe their own spin about Harper, that could be a fatal miscalculation. I’m sure Sun Tzu has something to say about the importance of knowing your enemy.
New poll up. Please vote. Thanks.
Jack Layton is disgusting. Planning to bring down an elected prime minister with a separatist as his partner. How UnCanadian. I’m waiting for the MSM to ask him if he loves Canada (remember that gem they sprung on Harper?)
It will be interesting to see what happens regarding Afghanistan. Jack and Gilles want the troops out immediately, but the Libs supported the motion to keep them there. If the Libs cave on that, it really shows that power is more important than our country.
The mere thought of Layton and Libby Davies calling the shots makes me cringe. I only hope that Harper is able to fix all the damage they do to our country.
I have always been against breaking up our country, but if this coalition happens, I will be supporting any efforts for the West to separate.
Sick, tired and had enough.
This is what I sent to the Governor General. I somehow doubt it will do any good. The jackals are baying for power and they scent blood.
I am very concerned about the possibility of a coalition hijacking our duly elected government. They are acting as if they have similar goals and objectives and therefore represent Canada better than the Conservatives. In reality, their goals are quite disparate and they are only willing to co-operate at this point to seize power. It frightens me that we would be facing the coming financial crisis with the country in such disarray and I don’t believe the coalition has a clearly identified mandate to take us through. If need be, let’s call another election to make this absolutely clear but let’s not submit to this cooked up version of a political dog’s breakfast. You might be the only hope this country has of returning to sanity. Please do not allow this coalition of opportunists to seize our country. I would accept any government that has been properly elected but this is not the way to govern a country.
Although I am up to my ears in boxes and packing, I just put up a one paragraph post. In case anyone wonders, ONLY the GG can prorogue. The PM’s hands are tied. He can ask but only she signs the documents to make it possible. See the explanation here:
http://www.gg.ca/gg/fgg/bios/02/wrap-up_e.asp
With the new economic panel of the four (Frank McKenna, etc.) it’s likely she will allow them to govern. The pits but legally and constitutionally possible.
This will probably make your blood boil but I see Justin Trudeau as the key out of this mess.
Like all of you I loathed hid father but Pierre waged war against the separatists,Justin can not go against his father’s legacy.
Now we know this wasn’t just a coalition thrown together over the weekend. You sure don’t get this so-called economic panel together in a few hours.
This was planned like Paul said when Dion was missing in action after the election.
I couldn’t believe how Paul Dwyer was being treated during a CBC interview this morning. The talking head, Heather Hiscox, treated him like this was all quite normal and a done deal. She was more interested in hearing about which Liberal leader they’d be willing to work with than asking about this treasonous attempt to over-throw the legitimate government of Canada.
It also looks like the prior deal struck between the NDP and the Bloc is being swept under the carpet. I got a sense of this yesterday when the CTV talking head asked an astonished Bob Fife about the legality of taping a private conversation even while he was breaking the news about the NDP conference call and the secret deal that had been cooked up before the fiscal update.
The media, for the most part, is implicit in this coup attempt.
I want to ask anyone out there who understands the powers of the Governor General if this is a fait accompli?
Doesn’t she have the option of refusing the request of the opposition parties to form the government?
What has to be proved in order for her to agree to any of this?
Does the Bloc merely have to say they’ll be supportive of the coalition or does it have to be in writing and why would anyone believe them?
Can she give her approval without a full disclosure of the ecomonic stimulus package the opps are talking about and the media is reporting on gleefully?
If this coup succeeds there will be a sword hanging over each and every minority government from now on and in a democratic system such as ours we get lots of minority governments.
An argument could also be made to take down majority governments because they frequently are elected with far less than the 50% of the vote that the opposition seems to feel is the new barometer for legitimacy as a governing party.
Didn’t Cretien form a majority government with only 38% of the vote? Meaning that 72% of the voters didn’t vote for him.
The fact that this is about entitlements seems to be getting lost in the arguments as well.
Everyone says that the Conservatives don’t want to play nice with anyone and they deserve what they get but the oppositions idea of playing nice is capitulation to their every whim.
I hope the GG has enough sense to question this thing thoroughly and then send us all back to the polls as quickly as possible.
Then Harper will finally win his majority.
I’m not sure that Canadians have become fully aware of what is going on but all the polls I’ve seen so far are overwhelmingly positive in favour of the government.
I personally am opting for another election.
NeilD
Here’s a way to express your outrage: RALLY FOR CANADA!
I am with you Joanne…have taken most of the weekend away from the television and viewing the news and into any good movie I can find, but even so, the brain has been clicking it all around…making sense of it…or at least trying to….
Keep up the good work and it looks like we will have to really engage the public in this…they only have the media to rely on…and what good is that.
It looks like another hard fought election is on the horizon. It has to be that way. No other way is democratic or worth the signature on paper.
CTV is trying very hard, and losing ground fast. Two polls up:
http://www.ctv.ca/
An NDP-Liberal coalition would:
Reflect the will of the people 1377 votes (25 %)
Be nothing more than a power grab 4038 votes (75 %)
Total Votes: 5415
http://www.ctv.ca/canadaam
Is the coalition government a power grab?
Yes (78 %) 838
No (22 %) 232
If you take the time to read the comments on the canadaam side, there are a lot of angry people – those who voted – and did not vote for a coalition.
I went to the Rally for Canada site, and tried to sign up. Unfortunately, my Province, Manitoba, is missing. Did anybody else notice this? I feel so left out!
I clicked into the Dave Rutherford radio show this morning and the calls from Alberta are sure raging mad. Dave says the coalition have been plotting this for a long, long time.
This “Unholy-Trinity” of the opposition makes my skin crawl. Words fail me in describing the disgust I feel that they actually think this is a viable option. Morons all.
Rita @ December 1st, 2008 at 10:29 am, congratulations on your well-reasoned letter to the GG.
More of us should follow your example.
Thank you Gabby. I sometimes get really discouraged when I read the message boards at CBC and other places. It’s not that I expect people to agree with my views but some of the posts are so mean-spirited and very naive. The argument that annoys me the most is when people argue that since some 60% of voters did NOT vote for the Conservatives, this entitles the remaining parties (somehow) to rule the country, as if they have a shared ideology and similar goals. If they had wanted to combine into some mega-party and then run against the Conservatives, I could see their reasoning. Then the electorate could have had a chance to compare their platforms and vote accordingly.
I despair when I see the number of “recommends” some of the most ignorant comments receive on the message boards. I know that many posters just keep erasing cookies and clicking recommend over and over, but it seems to me to be another way for people who don’t have enough to do, to try to shape public opinion. There’s a hysteria out there–people who have focused all their rage about the state of the world on one individual, Mr. Harper, and they would destroy the country in order to “get rid” of him. Makes me think it might do them good to get their wish and see how much of a country we have left once the jackals start dismembering the corpse. But then we would all be screwed wouldn’t we. Somehow, we have to find a way to let sanity prevail.
