I’m begging you.
"…we’ve toppled over a cliff, and no one really knows how far down we might fall…"
But lemmings don’t care about that.

Update: I was looking for a picture of a lemming. Not much luck, but ironically I did come across this which turned out to be quite prophetic.

“but lemmings don’t care about that” – funny Joanne!
Great column. Could a comeback be in the works for Mike?
Where do I sign up to be on his team?
I miss the Harris straight talk. Now there’s a guy who could move the PCs back into shape.
“Could a comeback be in the works for Mike?”
Sol, I thought the exact same thing.
Interesting that so many of his policies were similar to Ralph Klein’s successful AB. govt. When it was time for Ralph to go, it was time but he was given the time to take them full circle. (i.e. the deficit) I sense that Mr Harris, felt he had more to do.
According to the latest polls, the recent bi-elections, and the municipal/civic results BC may be headed “back to the future” with a NDP government. Holy Cow Bat-person … lemmings over the side of the boat!!
Talk of a viable BC/CPC provincial option needs to take place sooner than later. Gordon Campbell’s goose might be cooked come May 09
I fear with this economic decline internationally, we will see a NDP Ontario before we see another PC Ontario.
A party without a sitting leader is not a party.
Agree with West Coast Teddi. BC needs a BC/CPC as a viable option. People I have spoken with do not want to vote BC Liberal or BC NDP but they do not have a third option. Consequently, I fear the BC NDP will regain power — and here we go again!
Yikes. You guys out in BC seem to have it worse than we do, and that’s saying something!
Your cartoon picture is “prophetic” for BC. Even though the CPC did better in BC than the previous 2006 election, IMHO we have the dysfunctional Liberals to thank for that. There has always been a right/left political split and with the population concentrated in the lower mainland (Vancouver) it is difficult for the other “hinterlands” of the province to affect any outcome no matter what the politics.
I will be voting in favour of the BC-STV referendum which will be held in conjunction with the provincial vote (still first-past-the-post). From a political strategy perspective, I think that BC-STV will encourage diversity of political thought and that new parties will be created if BC-STV is approved. Conventional “wisdom” states that this will cause bedlam in the Legislature but I think that with the right paradigm shift, a proportional representation system can function very well. Its call “compromise”.
With a BC-STV victory, a c(C)onservative party will emerge that would put forward more of the policies that I can grasp and believe in – smaller government, less/lower taxes, “hand-up not a hand-out”, individual initiative and innovation are rewarded and encouraged, competition in the market place (health care / education) … and the list goes on.
BUT we in BC have shown to be “lemming leaders” so I’m not getting my hopes up.
Joanne, did you read todays’ National Post article written by Mike Harris ” HOW ONTARIO BECAME A HAVE-NOT”
What I don’t seem to get is the high taxes Dalton as imposed on his people and corperations.
What I find most shocking is how the liberals are ripping the conservatives on the economy when they the liberals themselves stole from this country and everything that goes with it.
I need to add to my above post that I am aware that there is a BC conservative party but not sure if it is associated with the Federal CPC.
Joanne, did you read todays’ National Post article written by Mike Harris ” HOW ONTARIO BECAME A HAVE-NOT”
Actually Jen, yes I did. I linked to SDA in the post and she had linked to the Harris article. It was really well written and made so much sense.
That’s what makes me miss him.
we also miss Harris because he was clear in his messages. What you saw, you got.
Joanne small dead animals have the story which i decided to see for myself and what i found have not been plastered in the news in the states-now I know why-the MSM that crowned OBAMA is holding back on damaging news same as it is done in Canada with the liberals and adscam. Take a look at the website
http://www.mediacircus.com/2008/10/obama-sued-citibank-under-cra-to-force-it-to-make-bad-loans/
Just want to thank West Coast Teddi for the info he has provided on BC politics. I am not a born and bred BCer and I lack in depth knowledge of BC’s political past. I have since researched the history of the BC Conservative Party and learned it has had more than its share of challenges. Next I will research the BC-STV. Appreciate the info.
That Tory will have to leave is inevitable. That he’ll stick around long enough to damage the PC chances in the next election is really up to people like us, making our opinions known.
Maybe Mike Harris could give Stephen Harper some advice as well. Check out the deficit projections from Kevin Page.
Kathy – http://www.bc-stv.ca/ will get you started. A long read is the BC boundaries commission report.
Raph. If only it were true. Please notice that these are “projections” not established fact. If the government continues spending at its present pace and if the economy doesn’t pick up the federal government will be in deficit.
However it must be noted that just like driving a car on ice, you don’t make sudden moves. You don’t rush about cutting spending or raising taxes to cover a deficit. You plan your course and you make your moves as quickly as needed without acting rashly thereby losing complete control.
It is possible to deepen a recession by reducing spending too quickly just as it is possible to get out of a deficit by cutting taxes. However reducing taxes does not always reduce a recession just as cutting spending does not always reduce a deficit.
The new darlings of the media will now be Kevin Page and full of himself pollster Niker Nanos. They’re findings as reported on MDL today makes them the Bad news Bears for the Conservatives, giving fodder to the Opposition.
It seems none of them can give one ounce of credit to Prime Minister Harper and his government.
What is the value of polling just after an election aside from playing politics?
Mike Harris was great. He made three huge mistakes as far as I am concerned – mistakes which really negated all of the great things he did for our province. He amalgamated the Ottawa area which has meant a serious deterioration in service levels and year after year of significant tax increases due to inept management. He monkeyed around with our hydro and we now have huge hydro bills due to all sorts of extra charges. He created MPAC which couldn’t derive a realistic assessment if its life depended on it.
I loved the guy but he sure screwed up with those three.
What seems to be the problem with the manufacturing sector in Ontario and Quebec?
The dollar is $0.78US, oil prices are lower than ever at under $50, interest rates are the lowest that I’ve ever seen in my lifetime, so what is the problem? Our dollar is not at par anymore, oil is not $145 and interest rates are not double-digits.
We’ve heard nothing but moaning that manufacturers can’t compete at a par dollar, oil at $145 and LOW interest rates. Now the biggest bunch of loser management teams and the CAW have what they want with a low dollar, low oil prices and low interest rates and they want taxpayer money to bail them out???? Screw ‘em! If they can’t compete with the current scenario, go bust, because then they really deserve to go bust!
FYI, the cartoon is from the fabled Farside series by Gary Larson.
The best site to learn about the BC Referendum is the original Citizens’ Assembly site:

Or you can visit the campaign site at http://www.stv.ca
The BC-STV system is great, it brings free market ideals to a voting system and much greater choice. It also gets rid of blacktop politics that focus on a few swing ridings.
