Kitchener-Waterloo recount scheduled for today

The big question in today’s recount between Peter Braid and Andrew Telegdi is the following: Will every vote be recounted?

I’ll try to post links and information as they become available today.

570 News has some background information, as does the Record which tells us that the judge will be Kitchener Superior Court Justice Donald Gordon.

I’m looking forward to a fair, democratic process.

If you find any additional information, please feel free to update us in comments. Thanks.

Update: Newstalk 570 just reported on their 11 a.m. news update that this recount could take 2 or 3 days! Therefore, I’m guessing that they’re actually counting every vote.

Funny, that.

Aren’t we all Canadians here?

Good report here from my old Alma Mater. (You’re doing a better job than the Record, guys.)

CTV Southwestern Ontario (link has video clip up now) has just reported on its noon broadcast that the beginning of the recount had been delayed due to a request by local media to be present during the process. This application has been granted by the judge and things are now underway.

Therefore unlike Vancouver South, it seems we have a fair and transparent recount going on in Kitchener-Waterloo.

Finally we hear from the Record:

…With Kitchener Superior Court Justice Donald Gordon watching, 50 Elections Canada counters began opening ballot boxes and reviewing each of the 60,803 ballots cast in the riding during the Oct. 14 federal election.

The counters were joined by 27 scrutineers from both the Liberal and Conservative parties.

NDP candidate Cindy Jacobsen was also represented at the recount.

As part of the process, if all sides disagree over a ballot, the lawyers for both Telegdi and Braid will argue the case before the judge. The judge then rules on all disputed ballots and declares the winner.

The recount is expected to finish tomorrow, although Gordon said it could go into Friday.

Hel-lo-o! Anyone in Vancouver South paying attention here???

Evening Update : Everyone’s gone home for the day now.  They’ll be back at it tomorrow.

The local CTV reporter says the only thing he is allowed to disclose is that there has been ‘some movement’.

Justice Gordon was appointed by the Liberals in 2001.

  2. Here we go again. Will check in and out throughout the day.

  3. I am still reading your links in your post. It would seem that they are taking great care and attention here with this recount. The word has gotten out hasn’t it? It’s awesome.

Oh yes, today is Thursday, we must keep our eyes and ears peeled to news about Wai where her lawyer will present their evidence.

Was there ever a statement issued by Troy ( re Keith Martin recount) stating why he withdrew from the recount?

    I will check back later.

    Oh yes, today is Thursday,

Actually, today is Wednesday, CR. But I know how you’re feeling. Things have been crazy lately, haven’t they?

I would think that the pressure would be on Vancouver South when Wai Young presents her appeal; especially since they seem to be the odd man out in terms of accountability and transparency.

  5. Oh my goodness I am a day ahead. I used to laugh at my father in his elder years for not being quite sure what day of the week it was, and now look, I am starting earlier…oh dear..

Vancouver South is certainly the odd man out here and it will become more noticeable.

  6. West Coast Teddi says:

In the Victoria-Esquimalt recount there was a 70 vote edge for Martin and only 67 disputed ballots so it would have been impossible to win. At that point Troy conceded and the recount was terminated. This means that the original count on election night stands with Martin winning by 67. Troy put out a press release thanking everyone for voting for him and increasing his vote from 2006 (third place) to a very very close second. Martin is one of those “mavericks” who would get elected no matter which party he is or has been in. He will be a thorn in the Liberal (left) side as much as the CPC, has a big following at the navy base. He supports the troops, privatized medicare, and a number of right wing policies.

The Victoria Times Colonist had access to the recount and reported on the process which I believe was a first for a newspaper. Elections Canada web site still is listing the Vancouver recount as pending thus is not finished yet.

  7. So far so good Joanne. Thanks for the update.

The problem of university kids not being allowed to vote is implied again in the Cord article by the Liberal candidate. As he doesn’t reference any examples one can only suppose that he…heard.
I find this disturbing because this change to identification requirements seems to come up alot, in my opinion.
Could it be why voter turnout was low? Hmmm.

  9. CC says:

Bec’s post jogged my memory re: university kids and voting. One of my kids is at UofWestern in London and didn’t vote because the folks who came around to the school to explain how to register came at an odd time when our child was in class, so couldn’t attend. So, it was up to us to tell our child to what to do and what ID to have. Our student said that of the 4 in the dorm room two didn’t vote…who could have. If this is typical perhaps the Elections Info. folks should make sure they do their presentations at times when most students can take advantage?

Good to see that every vote is worth counting in Waterloo. What is wrong with Vancouver south? Would be nice if the MSM picked up on this.

CR, we bloggers have been under a lot of stress lately… ;)

Bec, I totally agree. Why hasn’t Mike Duffy picked up on it yet?

Regarding the problems with students voting, I’ve been hearing that a lot. I guess perhaps this is something we should bring up with MPs when the new session starts.

  13. West Coast Teddi says:

Student voting has always been a problem – even in my day (Dief anyone??). Do you vote in the University riding or your home riding? It usually causes a student some grief to find out and make the switch especially if they are first year and haven’t voted before (usually 18). They are more interested in homecoming parties, beer bashes and for a fall election there is an exam or 2 about this time. We need internet voting or something.

My kids, who are in their 20′s and 30′s, always call around elections and ask me where they vote (and I tell them who for too). They are all in a different province, but I make sure they know where, when and how to vote. I asked a co-worker today if she voted and the reply was “politics is so stupid that I don’t vote”. there you have it!!

  14. Bec says:

    Hey Joanne,

When you arise, coffee in hand, go and read TT… It will get your juices flowing for the “big day”… Mind-flippin-boggling!!
…and oh ya, that cabinet thing is today too! lol

  15. Joanne says:

Thanks Bec. I got the same comment as Trusty Tory here.

TT’s post here for others to read – Huh?
