Bringing out the big guns

Chretien tried to bail out Dion tonight.

Roger Smith said it was the biggest rally by far. (MDL Prime Time)

What does that say about Dion?

Meanwhile, Craig Oliver says there is a sense of desperation at the Harper rally in Toronto; even though he also says it was the biggest by far, and Mike had trouble hearing Craig due to the enthusiasm and noise. Interesting.

  1. A little off topic but interesting, during the debates did not Lizzie say we had to devalue the dollar. Well today she got her wish, it is down to .80 cents. Why is there no outrage at her calling PMSH a fraud and a liar. Hasn’t she proved that it is her that is the liar as she lied her way into the debates. We not PMSH and Layton right when they said it would two liberal leaders there.

  2. Mary T. - I agree with you. They are a tag-team. No question.

The issue is, what did Dion promise her?

  3. How can the biggest rally so far portray a sense of desperation? Or is Craig trying to tell us that the sense of desperation is from him and a few of his MSM buddies?

  4. Craig’d desperate to get that senate appointment. Don’t mean to be rude, but at his age the clock is ticking. A Harper win would pretty much kaput any senate aspirations.

And I’m not sure rolling out Chretien is as brilliant as Kinsella and the Lib’s think it is. Putting Chretien out in the media will remind a lot of people why they never voted Liberal in 2006, ADSCAM.

  5. Chretien tried to bail out Dion tonight.

What does that say about Dion?

It tells me that Chretien either wants to return to politics or is in a dying state for more money.

Elizabeth May’s deal with the liberals speaks for herself; on Dion’s good days she remembers her ‘GREEN PARTY’ and on Dion’s bad days she remembers and speaks for her love. DION.
She flip flops and so does Dions -two peas in a pod.

  6. How can the biggest rally so far portray a sense of desperation? Or is Craig trying to tell us that the sense of desperation is from him and a few of his MSM buddies?

    Exactly.

  7. Craig Oliver is thinking Liberal all the time. During the interview at he Conservative rally, Craig mis-spoke and said Liberal Rally three times.. Lets just hope these newspapers that threw their support behind Stephen Harper will now remind Canadians of Harper warning us last Christmas of economic troubles ahead. We can be sure that CBC or CTV will probably not be endorsing Harper. Well definitely not Graham Richardson or Craig Oliver.
Agree Jen, there have been no clips of May calling Stephen Harper a fraud shown in reference to Green candidates throwing support behind Liberals.

“Roger Smith said it was the biggest rally by far. (MDL Prime Time)

What does that say about Dion?”

    ————–
That Harper had more people at his rally, in the same area… I cannot believe it(King Jean, had to go to Brampton, Lmao).

Jo, I lived in Brampton a long time, and have lived in Mississauga for a while…..

I still cannot believe that Harper got a bigger response fron the GTA, then King Jean..

It is Crazy that King Jean did not get the same numbers as Harper in the GTA rally’s……

  9. It will not help him. Everytime I see Chretien now I am reminded of all I have researched about him and Shawinigate and adscam. First off my lips…where is our money…how come all of the persons charged and jailed have not been asked to pay back..or have they.

Sooner or later Dion has to walk on his own. Without a script he is pretty much an ineffective character.

Face it, other than Duffy himself there is not really a single main stream television media person who is not completely on the side of the Liberals.

Journalism in Canada is dying as everyone is now giving an editorial rather than explaining what happened and letting the listener make thier own opinion. Most everyone at CTV is a Liberal and they don’t hide thier feelings on that at all.

  11. Returning Albertan, I think we need to send in complaints to the network when we see blatant bias.

If everyone did it, they might start realizing that Canadians aren’t quite as stupid as Elizabeth May claims.

  12. Oh stop whining.

CPC are going to win the election.

They know better than to suggest they are going to win a majority - any hint of that sends people to vote for someone else. Best to act like it will be a minority so people feel safe voting for the NDP and the Greens instead of the LPC.

Craig is doing you a favour.

  13. I couldn’t watch MDL all the way through tonight. They began sounding too much like a shill for the Liberals.
There wasn’t even a mention of the Dion interview and subsequent uproar and this is the network that usually thrives on the uproar part of any story. They refer to it as “having legs”.
Well, it would appear that the Dion interview story has no legs and is dead in the water and CTV is now going to spend the next few days blatantly kissing up to CTV for airing it in the first place.
Oh, Duff. I want to believe that you’re on the side of good reporting and all that stuff but you let too many opportunities to ask solid questions go by.
You lob softball questions and I don’t want my politicians to be lobbed softball questions by anyone in the media in the days leading up to an election. Especially this one when the American economy is in such dire straits and we’re so closely related as their largest trading partner.
I want them to be hardball questions!
All of the bankers and all of the non-banker experts who appear on MDL seem to agree that Canada’s economy is relatively robust and we’re rated number one in the world yet the Liberal politico’s are not called on it when they completely ignore those facts and instead say that Harper is driving the economy to ruin.
Poor John MaCallum was all over himself this evening trying reassure Canadians that our banks are strong and to attack Harper for his economic plan at the same time. It turns out that MaCallum is angry because he thinks that Harper doesn’t care enough.
Why didn’t Mike ask him what he would have done diffently if he had been Prime Minister compared to what Steven Harper has already done?
I’ll bet he would have given the very same answer that Dion gave earlier in the afternoon.
Speaking of which, why didn’t any reporter (ANY reporter) ask Dion the same question asked by CTV the day before?
There was (is) a huge mark over his inability to answer the question dealing with economics and nobody thought to ask the question again at the first opportunity?
Not even the reporter who asked it in the first place.
The answer Dion gave was a regurgitation of the usual pap he’d been spewing for a week or so. He was going to form a committee to get back to him in 30 days.
What kind of friggin’ answer is that to the question that was asked and why did the reporter not ask him the question yet again.
How is it possible for an entire press corps to fail at their job?
Instead Dion answered the question this afternoon at a Liberal rally and then preened like a peacock as if proud of the fact that he was able to even remember it.
This video is very damning because it displays his utter failure to grasp the economic picture to the point where he cannot answer a basic question without being told what to say.
It has nothing to do with ESL or a hearing problem yet the ESL angle will be played up huge in Quebec and the Tory numbers will sink a little lower.
Let’s be fair here. The Tories deserve plenty of blame too as they let this opportunity to slip through their hands. Their focus was on the poor understanding of English and that wasn’t the problem at all.
While I’m at it, why does Duff always have on representatives of the three main parties to debate policy decisions when you just know that we’re going to hear nothing but partisan bulls**t.
I want to hear real non-partisan experts debating the pro’s and con’s of government decisions so that I myself can make an informed decision on things that interest or affect me.

  14. Just watching CPAC with Mark Holland canvassing his riding. One woman said if it wasn’t for Stephane Dion she would vote Liberal. She said Dion “makes me want to strangle myself”.

Then Holland tried to talk her into voting Liberal just to stop Harper ‘from getting a majority’.

    Despicable.

  15. Neil, I just read through your comment. You have a lot to say, and I hear your frustration. I am shocked by the desperation of the liberal media right now.

All I can suggest is to complain when you see hyper-bias. But in the case of Duffy I suspect a blowback from last night. I am guessing that the LPC read them the riot act and they had to prop up the Liberals tonight. JMHO.

  16. BTW,
I think Harper and the Conservative Party are going to handily win the next election and it will be a majority.
    NeilD

  17. nothing like the “we know better than you…we’ll tell you how to feel” attitide of the left.

Forget about actually wanted BALANCED reporting here in Canada…we should just be bowing down to Oliver and appreciate what he is doing “for us”.

    Yeah, right.

Is that kinda like how the LPC told Jennifer Wright that she should be happy with the extra hits after they stole her company’s name?

Dion is now saying that Harper has no class because he dared bring up that awful performance in the now famous interview. He also keeps repeating that he has a plan and Harper has no plan.

What did they use to call it in the Soviet Union - you know if you just make a lie big enough eventually people will be browbeated into accepting it.

If the Canadian people pick Dion after this fiasco, then we know for sure that a stuffed puffin could run for the Liberals and get elected.

    Oh Canada….

  19. Go catch the video of Dion seeking help from his team, at Stephen Taylors. Priceless after yesterday.

  20. Funny. I was watching a Dion rally today on CPAC. I could barely hear the fly on the back wall over the roar of the three people that were clapping. I’m not sure if they were actually clapping though. They may’ve just been trying to kill a fly.
Had to turn the sound down on the Harper rally though. You know how 5.1 surround sound can be. The thundering noise kinda annoys the neighbors.

Did anyone notice Duff get emotional - it was when they were talking about Mdme. Chretien’s heart surgery. Seems like he has been rather emotional today - I suspect yesterday was not kind to him. There was some pretty nasty vile things said to him and about him.

  22. “Bringing out the Big Fool”

And Duffy should toughen up. Kudos to Steve Murphy for having some gonads.

Makes me wonder how many other super blunders of Dion’s are sitting on the cutting room floor. It’s a negligent and almost criminal MSM constantly covering up for him. Shame.

  23. Hey alberta girl, duff gets emotional quite often, and sometimes over nothing. It has really been noticeable since he had his heart surgery.
Not sure if anyone mentioned it elsewhere, but as for the Cadman tape,Roger Smith said it was a likely ‘go nowhere’ story..too late in the campaign, and it already fizzled once.

  24. I agree Sammy..it has been so noticeable about the Duff since his heart surgery. It can come on at any time. My husband watches him every night and sometimes he remarks .. I do not think he is well, or quite himself tonight.. guess we better cheer him up and send him some blackberry comments right when he is on air…like go duff go…we’re keeping our eye on you lol….

Might have to start watching CBC again - Not

It’s the oil tankers on the west coast issue. There are NONE, Lunn says there are NONE but the eco-terrorists are mounting a campaign to say that they have seen one - Esso Valdez like way back when.

Blue - forgot about the links - check the junk monster.

  27. The majority was lost in Quebec. I’m hoping for a strong minority.

  28. For a good chuckle, read comments at G&M (before they disappear) on Chretien rocks the campaign ..by taber.Majority are NOT Chretien friendly.

  29. I don’t see how bringing out that liar Mr. Shawinigate could possibly be a good thing in the dying days of the campaign. Or is that Mr. Adscam, or Mr. HRDC? Or was it Mr. Gun Registry? I don’t know, I’m not very good with names of notorious Prime Ministers who still haven’t repaid millions of dollars to tax payers.

  30. At this point in time, I don’t think it matters what you or I think of Chretien. Millions of Canadians had respect for him, and that’s what Dion is hoping will save his campaign. People are people. They may not accept Dion, but they’ll never admit that they may’ve been wrong about Chretien, because that would call into play their own previous judgement about Chretien. Just like you and I know that Harper is the best option for these times, a lot of Canadians will hold to the illusion that Chretien was the best for his times. Hopefully they can differentiate now, and see that maybe Warren’s purple dinosaur should’ve devoured Bart the fish.

  31. “They may not accept Dion, but they’ll never admit that they may’ve been wrong about Chretien, because that would call into play their own previous judgement about Chretien.”

Well, Paul, I hope you’re wrong because that would make millions of Canadians irrational.

  32. Greg Weston wrote a very interesting article today about Dion, which provides further proof that he is not qualified for the job of Prime Minister. In addition, yesterday on Mike Duffy one of the CTV reporters on Dion’s campaign tour said that Dion had also run into difficulty during an interview on Much Music. So, the Halifax interview disaster is not an isolated incident.

  33. Does this mean that Craig Oliver is losing his mind, or playing to the ones he is with.

Craig’s List: For the Liberal leader, the damage is done
Updated Fri. Oct. 10 2008 2:25 PM ET

    Craig Oliver, Chief Political Correspondent

In all of the fog of rhetoric and rancour surrounding the thrice-ceased interview with Liberal Leader Stephane Dion, there is one hard reality — The time has long since passed when anyone aspiring to be a national leader of Canada can be anything less than completely comfortable in both French and English.

To anyone with any comfort zone in English, the questions with having to do with what Mr. Dion would do about the economic crisis if he were prime minister were indelibly clear.

Dion, who has been demanding the Conservative government detail its plans for protecting Canada from the marauding wolves of recession and worse seemed unable to lay out his own ideas of what is needed in this urgent crisis.
    ~

  34. Craig hasn’t lost his mind. He said what needed to be said. I do think Craig should consider retirement though.

Looks like the hopes of the “big gun” coming to Dion’s rescue turned out to be a water pistol. No real coverage in any major papers…..except the Star.

You got to know that if Chretien had rocked the place that Kinsella would be beside himself with accolades in on his blog.

His silence is telling. He’s doing what most of us are…..finding solace in this really beautiful weekend.

    Harper’s going to prevail.

  35. It is terrific to read some insightful reporting. RE: MSM bias..Oliver..Duf etc. I was hoping that a few of us would bombard CTV with complaints etc about their journalistic bias in this campaign.(CBC is a lost cause) I did and although I do weaken occasionally have turned it OFF!
The constant inflections in the voices of the (some)reporters and anchors is restrictive for the every day person just “catching the news”. They (libs ndp) have sung the “sky is falling” song for the better part of a month and scared the cr** out of this country. Our media has played right into their hand and that makes me mad. Responsible journalism, ladies and gentlemen, please. They are the first to criticize U.S. style anything but their own sensationalism is right up there with U.S. media propaganda. Now Michael Moore is “in town” to stir things up too…EGAD!

  36. Not only did Chretien take what PM Harper say about that there could be some good opportunities to buy in the current stock market conditions, but in doing so proved that he, like Dion, are of the buy high sell low mentality.

  37. Warren Buffet has overtaken Bill Gates as the richest man in America. Perhaps Chretain should look at what his company does, buys low when the market goes down, but a company is well managed. He recently bought several million shares, when the market collapesed and they have since made him millions.
How many of you have money in the market, other than RRSPs or pension funds. How many more years will it be before you intend to cash them in. Probably at least 20 years. Why panic now, just because a few greedy media people (looking for a senate seat) or desperate politicians tell you lies.
Wonder if Dion has lost money, or Chretain, or Iggy. Belinda might have to reduce her millions per year to a few million less.
Think of those that panicked and sold there ITs, when the rules don’t come into effect for a few more years, and if Dion gets in he will cancel them.
Will you be furious with him for costing you money.
If the economy (which by the way is us) is so bad why are the grocery stores packed with people buying supplies for Thanksgiving Dinners across Canada.
You can’t put on a family dinner for 6 or more for less than 200.00, but we do it. Halloween will be here and kids will get loads of treats, and they are not cheap. I know a few people (I hate them) who have almost finished their Christmas shopping.
And again I ask the question, where is Layton or Dion going to find 5000 doctors on a moments notice.
Even opening up more training spaces it takes about 10 years to go from high school graduate to an MD degree.

  38. I was wondering if Duffy is writing his memoirs…I’d sure like to see his journal entry for Thursday. How many toes did he step on in order to have to air that video? Also wondering if he was on edge yesterday..was he ‘warned’?
Something to bear in mind:heart meds have side effects…some being the quick tears.
Joanne ..did you have a link fo Mike Duffy?…just so we can thank him for doing the ‘We report, you decide’ method?I couldn’t find it at CTV.

  39. Bluetech, I think Duff’s addy is duff@ctv.ca

  40. Oh stop whining.

CPC are going to win the election.

Whining? More arrogant commentary from the Liberal (now) far-left. I can’t believe I once supported the LPC, when they were the party of economic necessity to control the deficit, and doing the correct things to fix the problem. I didn’t foresee the corruption that followed.

Of course, the CPC will win, but the obstruction will continue.

  41. JohnDoe: Millions of Canadians voted for Chretien when he said he would abolish the GST and cancel the NAFTA. They voted for him again when he said he was going to bring in universal childcare. They voted for him again despite the Red Book being thrown in the trash. I don’t know, but that sounds pretty irrational to me. What’s everybody else’s opinion?
