Shocker - Record endorses Harper!

The Waterloo Region Record, which is a division of Metroland Media Group Ltd. (a subsidiary of the Torstar Corporation of Toronto Star fame ) has officially endorsed Stephen Harper! This is the land of Karen Redman and Andrew Telegdi, folks:

…Throughout most of its history, The Record has endorsed Liberals in federal elections. In fact in the past 40 years, there have been only two other occasions on which we did not. However, the Green Shift is a stumbling block we cannot clear

Please read Harper’s Plan Offers Us Hope, while I pick myself up off the floor.

Update: Canada rated world’s soundest bank system:survey - Reuters.
Still ready to take that chance on Dion?

Jo - the folks over at Kinsella’s need a diet of this now.

    Great news.

So let’s review the media regions endorsing Harper:

    Halton
    Whitby-Ajax-Oshawa-Clarington
    Kitchener-Waterloo

I’m predicting a strong minority for Harper.

And in another shocker - Julie Van Duesen just complimented Jim Flaherty after his speech. Maybe some in the media are realizing that they just might get something they don’t really want.

Joanne - you need to link Andrew Coyne’s column today.

It’s another indication that Harper was right when he said that the opposition was thirsting for a recession.

It means that the Liberals are playing Canadians like a cheap fiddle.

  4. So let’s review the media regions endorsing Harper:

    Halton
    Whitby-Ajax-Oshawa-Clarington
    Kitchener-Waterloo

BSB - If anyone has links to other newspapers endorsing Harper, please let me know and I’ll post them. Thanks.

The National Post endorsed the CPC yesterday, of course.

  5. Thanks, BSB. I’ll check it out.

  6. You beat me to it. I was just going to say what a good column there is today by Andrew Coyne.

In looking for andrew coyne’s column I happened to come across this one by Scott Feschuk - if there is any need to point out the fact that Stephen Harper cannot say anything that will not be taken and turned into fodder for the opposition; this takes the cake.

Joanne - I think I put a comment with a link on your blog which didn’t go through - I forgot, sorry.

Anyway, over at MacLeans - Scott Feschuk is mocking Harpers statement about his mother by an “open letter to Steve’s mom”.

Just goes to show how it makes no difference what the PM says - it will be taken, stirred up, spit out and mocked by the media and the opposition.

making fun of anyone’s mother or a family member is off limits!!

  10. Thanks, AG. I’m not sure why that one got stuck in the filter but I unleashed it now. ;)

It also tells me that the way Harper has handled himself is exactly the right way.

Feschuk is wrong to have done what he’s done. I do believe he should be outted and his political leanings as well.

After all if it were a conservative partisan making fun of, oh, I don’t know Dion’s wife picking out his undies for him…I’m sure the Liberals would cry foul…long and loud.

  13. Alberta Girl Says:
    October 9th, 2008 at 9:11 am

Of course the Libs are saying Flaherty’s comments this morning are evidence that they didn’t understand this crisis and are just now reacting. This on CBC - I note that Julie Van Duesen didn’t correct that statement for the viewers. I take back my nice comment about her.

One last thing before I go for a few hours.

Joanne, Paulstuff, sammy — what do you think the implications to Harper’s campaign will be when they announce how much the war in Afghanistan is costing us?

usual outrage by the NDP of course, but where are the Liberals on this considering we had to pick up their mess of underfunding and poorly supporting our fighting men and women.

Is it going to send the usual MSM gnats into a swarm again. Making Dion out to be the Pilsbury Dough Boy and Harper Oscar the Grouch?

Something to think and plan for I do believe.

WHERE ARE THE ADS!!! They’re AWOL

I watched Dion last night on the National with Mansbridge and came away thingking “there is no way people are going to flock to this guy and his plan”. He is as much the misguided prof as he has always been, even with his supposed great performance in the French debate.

Looking at yesterday’s Ekos and even yesterday’s Nanos, I am not seeing an all-out movement of voters toward the Liberals. As people mull the economic situation over and cooler heads prevail, there will be a lot more folks coming to the same conclusion as the editorial staff of The Record.

  16. Glenn in Waterloo Says:
    October 9th, 2008 at 9:50 am

The fact that the Record is willing to endorse a Conservative government is clearly a step in a different direction for this traditionally Liberal Rag. Unfortunately despite the positive endorsements from several papers in the past few days, most people get their daily dose of news from the television media. Since the debates last week the television media is in full Stephane Dion support mode. Most of the “journalists” covering the election have a gleem in their eye when they report about the Conservative decline in the polls and the “lack of compassion” the PM has for Canadians worried about the current economic situation. No matter what the PM says to show how the government has worked to maintain a solid econmomy in comparison to the rest of the industrialized world, the message is tilted and spun in favour of the Liberals.

Good government is not overtaxing the population to build surpluses to spend on useless programs for niche groups. If a Liberal government is elected, that is what we will see

  17. Maybe I linked to the wrong Coyne article. Is this the one you guys meant? The only thing they have to fear.

  18. Layton irresponsibly talked about the 1930’s financial crisis and attempted to compare that to today’s troubles. He also likes to criticize our involvement in the Afghan conflict. He tells us that we cannot win. Layton should tell that to the millions of Afghan children, especially the girls who are now going to school for the first time in their lives; I am sure that millions of them consider themselves ‘big winners’.
Since Layton likes comparisons with the 1930’s, we should remind him from time to time of his predecessor of the day (Woodsworth), the leader of the same left wing party, who infamously voted in the Canadian parliament opposing our country’s involvement in the WW2 war against Mr. Hitler and his Nazis, a disgrace to that party, then and now. It seems that that leopard has not changed it’s spots.

These editorials are one of the things we have going for us in the final week. Obviously, local candidates can wave these third-party endorsements around at every opportunity. And Harper can rattle them off during his press conferences.

    Something else to consider …
Before Alberta’s recent provincial election, the polls were showing a small minority for Stelmach’s PCs. The surprising result was a Klein-like 30 some seat majority. Rod Love, Klein’s ex right-hand-man, writitng afterwards in the Calgary Herald, mentioned that the PCs very strong GOTV machine was what the pundits missed.

The question at the federal level is, how much stronger is the CPC GOTV vs the LPC GOTV ? It obviously varies greatly by region.

Anyway, what we need right now is an uptick in one or more of the daily polls. Not just for the psychological and motivational effect, but also to slow down the glut of “expert” doom and gloom analysis we are reading in the MSM.

  20. I have sent links to nationalnewswatch before, and the links were put on their site.

I just sent the record piece.
Jo, suggest you compile the links, send them their and see if national newswatch will bundle them up into a ‘Harper endorsement’ segment.

    news@nationalnewswatch.com

  21. Jo, also, maybe jacksnewswatch would start an endorsement segment, compiling the endorsements as they come in. A tidy package that could be linked to on BTs, even sent to Duffy.
It might start a Harper/Dion endorsement fight that I think we will win.

The TSX is up about 170 as I write, so that will help, if it holds.

Re the polls, I just did a quick and dirty analysis of Nik Nanos’s numbers over the last three days, showing the 1200-sample rolling average percentage, followed by what the three previous 400-sample percentages could have been:

    Mon @ 29 % meant, say 29,29,29 previous 3 days
    Tues @ 31 % meant 35,29,29
    Wed @ 29 % meant 23,35,29

Now 23 % is based on a 400-sample, so has a high Margin of Error, but its going to remain in Niks 3-day calculation for Thurs,Fri,Sat. The 35 % drops off when Sat rolls around.

It’s insane that so much seems to ride on Nik’s small daily numbers, but that’s what we have. It’s all about the perception of momentum.

Also insane, as the Globe reported yesterday, those making $60,000+, and losing in the marker, are taking their frustrations out on Harper ! How can you be smart enough to make 60 grand, but dumb enough to think Harper has anything to do with this global market downturn ?!

  23. Alberta Girl Says:

I put this comment on Greg’s blog and am repeating it here because it shows how this election is being directed by the media and the pollsters.

There is also talk of a poll done where participants were asked “do the Tories scare you” (or something to that effect). The Tories were the only party addressed in that question.

“More people also now agree with the statements “Stephen Harper scares me” and “Conservative party too extreme,” though such questions were asked only about Mr. Harper and his party.”

    from http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20081009.welxnpollweb1009/BNStory/politics/home

Stats 101 - you can skew polling just by how you ask the question. Why are pollsters asking questions like this.

  24. Wilson, an endorsement segment is a great idea!

Conservative bloggers should be sharing & posting this info. Thanks.

  25. And ..instead of the opposition/msm trying to literally scare the pants off people, where is the coverage re this story:Canada’s banks are the soundest IN THE WORLD!Just watched the bus.analyst on ctv,and he stated that out of a 0-7 (with 7 being best)rating Canada scored a 6.8.Also,the analyst said, this pretty much buttresses what the Gov’t has been saying.

  28. Thanks Jo.
With this worst in 50 years world crisis going on, the Harper campaign needs as much help as it can get.

I have no doubt, PMSHs first concern is the crisis and the campaign is taking a back seat to talking to other world leaders and agencies and Premiers.

Yah know, all the things Dion promised to do in 30 days, PMSH is handling right now, on top of the most important election in decades.
    The man is amazing.

google corus radio to find it and listen live.

  30. I just did an email poll for Ipsos that just came in. It’s the first time they’ve polled me about politics in this campaign. I told them I was an ‘undecided’ voter. The survey went on to list about 20 issues and I was to rate if they were important to me on a scale of 1 to 7. Then they asked if I felt that these same 20 or so issues would be addressed better or worse in the coming year. A question about if I felt my personal financial position would be better or worse a year from now. And finally, they asked if I would particpate in a lengthy poll on election day.

Of the 20 issues, 7 of them were economic including ‘do you think SD and the Liberals have a strong plan for uncertain economic times’,'do you think SH and the Conservatives etc’, ‘are you afraid of losing your job’, ‘do you think Canada will go into recession’,'do you think that the government should inject money into job creation even if it means going into deficit’ and ‘do you think that government interference with the ecomony even in the short term is a positive force (or something like that).

    I’m betting it’s a CPC commissioned poll.

With the financial crisis in full bloom, melt down in the stock market, massive panic in the streets, critical elections in Canada and USA, and global warming … I ask: “Should the National Hockey League cancel it’s opening night games and wait until the world is a better place?”

Happy Thanksgiving every one. The Sun shall continue to rise and set on the Greatest Country in the World - Canada!!

  32. heh! hubby just got the same poll and said he was a liberal and SD was the country’s saviour! LMAO. See… people lie. I lie mostly because over the years everytime I self-identify as a conservative, I never get another poll.

  33. My recent post at SDA;

Just posted this on Paul Wells Blog in response to his and the Liberals referring to Sweden as a model of a green tax working, remembering that their previous socialist government implemented it many years ago.

Paul, sorry to burst your bubble on Sweden, not!

“On August 1, 2008, the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) concluded the Article IV consultation with Sweden.1

    Background

    A center-right government took office in 2006 and is boosting labor participation and reducing reliance on the welfare state. The government has cut some income taxes and reduced benefit and active labor market programs. It is continuing strong fiscal policies to reduce debt;

Swedish banks have been resilient to global financial turmoil, but risks are rising. Share prices have dropped, and CDS spreads have widened, especially for those banks exposed to the slowing Baltic economies. Vulnerabilities have been mitigated by strong conditions in the Swedish economy, so far, even though Swedish house prices also warrant monitoring.”

  34. See… people lie. I lie mostly because over the years everytime I self-identify as a conservative, I never get another poll

    Annie - LMAO!

  35. Did anyone just hear Dion on CTV contradicting Bob Rae???

  36. BlueSweaterBrigade Says:

I got Ipsos too. Same poll.

All the news today re: our banks tops and the Economist endorsing Harper, plus the papers in Ontario coming out with their own Harper endorsements tells me one thing, and clearly.

It tells me that the papers on the ground are more credible than the MSM or Parliamentary Press Gallery, simply because they get their sources directly from the grassroot voters. The MSM and PPG are too obsessed with sticking it to Harper to have been blinded by the fact that:1)ordinary folks can’t stand what they’re doing, 2)their bias shows clearly and it’s not something most looking for balanced reporting respect, and 3)it proves that it’s the MSM and the polls that are out of touch with ordinary Canadians.

I just watch a clip of Dion, still flapping his hands like it’s time for his nap or something.

Oh, and I do believe that the latest news re: the cost of war in Afghanistan was reponded to excellently by Harper - heard Craig Oliver try to corner him with a smarmy question but he didn’t bite.

I also believe that the Afghanistan issue, if the MSM make a big deal of it works for the NDP and Jack Layton and further threatens the Martin/Dion team.

    A hearty puffinpoop to you!

  37. I am wondering if this was the ideal situation that the Tories wanted. We’ve seen it the past that when the polls show the Tories headed to a majority, the anti-harper crowd plays the fear card and many who would not vote Tory ever, run to the Libs to try and stop them. In this case where it appears that Dion might win, maybe the lefty vote go with their hearts and vote Dipper. If this is the case, then in the many close ridings it could very well split the left vote and allow the Tories to take a few more seats by coming up the middle.

  38. Brett, I was wondering the same thing. Notice today that Harper said you have a choice between PM Harper or PM Dion.

The consequences of that thought are beginning to sink in, I’ll bet.

  39. Karen Redman will be calling for help from all the biggie Liberals. If you are shocked Joanne…imagine the stone face on Ms.Redman. Oh we can but hope.

I caution people to do any gloating. Let’s not go that far. Let’s just comment on things with amazement maybe?

It is incredible that the media enticed pmsh into “opening up a bit” - he does…and then they are all over him…there is no pleasing them…it is like the cat playing with the mouse…I am noticing more and more how the press sets the way Canada is going to “tick” or how the election topics will appear — it is all out of control..
Thank goodness for bloggers who are
“not going to take it anymore” and are becoming “crusaders for pmsh” or are telling it like it is.

  40. I agree with other comments here…attacking Mr. Harper’s mother in any way, shape or form is “off limits” and very disrespectful.
