Tory platform unveiled

There are a few links up now detailing the Tory platform as announced by PM Stephen Harper at noon, which includes modest new spending proposals.

At a press conference following the announcement, Harper was asked about his seeming lack of emotion or empathy regarding the current financial crisis. I don’t have the exact words yet but his answer was something along the line that a Prime Minister has to retain an appearance of control and confidence and that he can’t run around like Puffin Little (my analogy). Doing anything else would be irresponsible.

When more links are available, I will post them.

Update: Jack’s Newswatch has several links up now. (H/T WCT)

GlobeTories woo manufacturing, vow to remake Senate.

Here we go, folks! National Post is on itConservative Party Platform. I will never cancel my Post subscription. Never.

Also, please check out Inkless WellsVerbatim, Jim Flaherty… (H/T Glenn in Waterloo)

Stephen Taylor has the whole platform posted on ipaper – complete with pics! Very cool.

Harper’s absolutely right!! This country’s going to be in deep s____ if those Liberals get their hands on taxpayer’s money again….count on it!

If every blue blogging Tory doesn’t have a listing of Sandy’s accomplishments on their blog they need to link to them and send out as often as possible.

The Liberal record of absenteeism and voting WITH the gov’t, and the reminder through Martin’s book of the corruption and of why we sent the Liberals packing in the first place is still a factor.

I think the best line in the PM’s speech is when he said something like if Bob Rae gets hold of Canada’s finances it’s going to make Ontario during his time as Premier look like Boomtown. Priceless!!!

What’s really insulting to folks I know who are still sitting on the fence and tuned in to either CBC or CTV for actual balanced information on Harper’s policy they were cheated. I think CTV spent less that 5 minutes talking about it afterward.

I think all bloggers should swamp media outlets big time with questions, calls, letters.

This is a contest and it IS all about winning.

Fight Back Stephen Harper! You deserve to win this thing.

  2. jeff davidson says:

nanos has it down to 3 points today. ndp starting to bleed to the libs. 34 % cons 31% liberals 18% ndp

there is a race for 2nd place afterall. however, it now involves mr. harper’s team.

  3. Joanne says:

Well Jeff, in that case I think I’ll start an ABL campaign!

  4. West Coast Teddi says:

Jack’s NW has 3 links to CTV

  5. Joanne says:

    Thanks, Teddi!

  6. Glenn in Waterloo says:

Earlier today I was checking Inkless and Wells has posted Jim Flaherty’s response to Stephane Dion’s 30 day economic plan. Minister Flaherty’s response is fantastic and is a must read. Unfortunately, the only place in the MSM I have seen it is on Wells’ blog. While the MSM raves about Dion’s team (Iggy, Rae etc.) the comments from Jim Flaherty show the depth in the most important ministry in government right now. His response should be used by PM Harper in every stump speech from here on through to election day.

  7. Ontario Girl says:

For those of you who missed the PM’s platform release on CBC….it was 1/2 hour long…there was a female interpeter for 5 minutes…then there was NO ONE. GONE for the balance of the speech.
Now we have CBC saying, too little too late.
Also during Harpers speech, running along the bottom of the screen on CBC, was Conservative negativity and Dion boosting.

  8. jad says:

According to CTV, Dion has just put out a news release calling the Speech lies and distortion, and reminding everyone that a group of academic economists published a letter this morning (right on cue) recommending a carbon tax.

I guess it was a good speech.

  9. BlueSweaterBrigade says:

jad – Dion was calling Harper’s speech lies and distortions yesterday and the day before….so what?
Doesn’t phase me a bit. Harper’s message is dead on and if Canadians need to be warned it of Dion as PM because the corruption in his party and the in-fighting continues.

  10. jad says:

BSB, I was being sarcastic about the Liberals. Basically, they can’t find anything in the speech to criticise.

  11. Joanne says:

Thanks for that tip, Glenn. Link to Paul Wells is here.

Maybe I won’t cancel my Macleans subscription after all. ;)

  12. Joanne says:

Harper is being interviewed live on CBC now with Peter Mainsbridge.

  13. BlueSweaterBrigade says:

Flaherty’s points are excellent and need to be the centre point of any ads that Harper has coming out.
This is exactly what needs to be pushed out there and sooner rather than later.

  14. jad says:

FYI, PM’s interview yesterday with Amanda Lang of Business News Network here.

  15. BlueSweaterBrigade says:

Watching MDL and Don Drummond seems to be supporting what Harper’s been saying all along…that we have to be prudent managers of Canada’s economy to sustain us through these times and into the future.

Now, Mr. Dion can call Harper a liar all he wants, but when it comes to managing my household I’m more in-line with the vision that Harper has, NOT Dion and NOT Layton.

I don’t want to live in a country with Dion at the helm.
I just don’t….I’m sure the folks out west don’t either.

  16. MaryT says:

Newman is trying his best to get the finance minister to admit we are facing a recession. Newman will not accept that steps were taken back in August 2007 to avoid all or most of the problems of today. Dion is talking about lowering the age to turn RRSPs into RIFFS, completly unaware that the conservatives did that last year. Seems Dion is promising to do a lot of things already done, or spending money already budgeted for. Maybe he should have had his caucus attend the HofC and read bills and the budget instead of hiding.
Now the real trashing of todays announcement will begin as Newman has other party reps about to talk trash.
Newman also bashed Jim about if PMSH knew these things already to be announced why didn’t he bring it up during the debates. He is trying to say that this platform was developed post debate, to take the sting off the Dion for changing his plan by the day.
Why should he have mentioned these things during the debate to have a 4 on 1 free for all.
    Dryden will explain things.

  17. MaryT says:

Oh gee, Peggy Nash is upset there were no announcements re greenhouse gas.
She says no one wants phony promises-huh, has she paid attention to her leader.

  18. Joanne says:

    Liberal plagiarism on MDL!!!!

  19. paulsstuff says:

Just saw that Joanne. Somebody wipe this smile off my face.

  20. May says:

Okay NO WAY in heck do I believe the liberals are at 30% with their pathetic performance and no way are the NDP going DOWN with their great performance (I disagree with them but I have to say they have a good campaign and I’m jealous). No way people. Dion was pathetic in the debate and Layton kicked butt (he ticked me off a bit but I have to admit he kicked butt). 400 people a night is no picture of the country there is a silent majority out there and nobody knows what it will do. Up yours Nanos there is no way that adds up.

Joanne do you know where the whole thing is? The PDF? That list on NP doesn’t include the stuff on crime and the Senate: every media outlet is saying something different and I can’t find the whole thing on the Conservative website. (What ARE those morons in the war room doing anyway; they ran a beautiful campaign last year and this year it is mediocre. Granted the liberals are running a pathetic one but that is no excuse for a mediocre campaign).

And as for all this junk about arts and stuff… Here is what I am concerned about right now in order of importance:

    1. Heat

    2. Food

    3. Shelter

    4. My livelihood.

It’s amazing how a global crisis clears the mind and I don’t give a rat’s tail about what the selfish artists and interest groups think. What part of “if the economy tanks we’ll ALL be screwed including you” do they not understand?

This thing is bigger than them; it’s bigger than me; it’s bigger than Stephen Harper, Danny Williams, panicking media, George freaking Bush, derangement syndromes and dome disease put together. It’s bigger than Canada. So will the selfish people (JOURNALISTS) just shut up and step back for second and look around?

Anyway I’m off to watch the speech (my laptop is being horrible to me so I have to use the family computer). Hopefully it will have more information than the Conservative website. Sheesh!

  21. May says:

    P.S.

I also don’t give a rat’s tail about a certain book written by Quebec’s answer to the bunny boiler. Will she and her boobs PLEASE slink back to the shadows she came from and leave me and my TV/Computer in peace.

    End of rant.

  22. Joanne says:

    Way to go, Paul!

  23. BlueSweaterBrigade says:

This needs a wider audience. Seems as always the chickens(and puffins) are coming home to roost.

Judging from the pandering of the polls over at Kinsella’s you’d think that some of those dudes just had their first great BM of the month.

I think they need a reality check over there paul, jo?

  24. paulsstuff says:

That’s odd. The story that Kady said was a non-story on her blog has been in the Post, on radio, and on Duffy among other places.

They tried the pile-on thing with me last night, including the usual suspects.

And now, nary a word from the peanut gallery.

Kady, Curran, Ti-Guy, your silence is deafening.

By the way, National Newswatch has taken down Kady’s dismissal of the plagiarizm and now has the proper title back up.

  25. paulsstuff says:

Well, this couldn’t come at a better time I think. Maybe Dryden took one to many pucks to the head.

    http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/fullcomment/archive/2008/10/07/john-turley-ewart-st-233-phane-dion-must-fire-ken-dryden.aspx

  26. Fay says:

Mike Duffy today is all about how to help the Liberals win the election. Even made a crack to journalists at the end of program, here are some of our future senators and they all laughed. No mention again of Dion’s leadership debt.
Gag, then Mike Duffy tells he will be interviewing Julie Coullaird tonight. He is not even trying to present both sides.

  27. annie says:

    *applauds May*

    I wanna vote for May
(the Blue Like You reader/poster, not Lizzie, just to clear up any confusion)

    You go girl : )

  28. Sol says:

Ok, so the MSM is doing exactly what we’ve accused them of…..what do we do about it?? Are we that willing to live in a country where the MSM have such a dim view of their audience to feed them the stuff elementary school kids would get failing grades for?

  29. potato says:

“what do we do about it??”

Unfortunately Conservatives don’t really have a main stream voice in Canada. We really have no national media stumping for Conservative values. If I had the wherewithal I would be posting videos to YouTube. Given Harper’s track record over the last two and a half years discrediting windbags like Rae almost writes itself.

  30. Alberta Girl says:

“what do we do about it”

Well I have emailed show hosts about their blatant bias – the response from Mike Duffy last night

“relax, let democracy take its course”

The only problem is – democracy is not “taking its course” because the MSM is directing that democracy by their pointed stories. I predicted this would happen and here we are.

My prediction now is – the Libs will win – they will be propped up by the NDP and the Bloc- we will have a recession but it will get blamed on the mess the Harper government left – in no way will it be blamed on the new taxes that get brought in and the fact that big business heads to friendlier markets.

  31. Sol says:

Get hold of yourself Alberta Girl. I can’t believe that our country is buying what Dion’s selling. Instead of blubbering keep writing, calling, blogging with a reminder of Harper’s record. Don’t play into the hands of those who give up when the going gets tough.

Just be thankful you live in Alberta. Pity the rest of us out here in lemmingland

  32. Alberta Girl says:

“Pity the rest of us out here in lemmingland”

Ha HA Slap Slap – there – I have slapped myself out of it.

Funny enough – I am just watching Global National where they are talking to a whole bunch of Canadians out buying their lunches at a deli talking about how the deli hasn’t really noticed a slowdown but everyone is worried.

Doesn’t anyone understand that if companies have not noticed a slowdown – it isn’t here. But you can be sure that everyone talking about it – from bankers, to newspeople, to economists, to politicians – will ensure that it will happen. So the lemmings will go about spending their money all the while talking about the recession that is coming.

    Liz May was right!!

  33. May says:

Okay I just watched the speech. Wow. Freaking amazing. Other than the 90th Anniversary of Vimy Speech and the leading up to Vimy speech that was the best speech he’s ever done. I’m blown away. I am also filled with hope which is something I really need right now in this climate of panic and fear. Hope is the overwhelming reason I voted in 2006. Fear was there, fear for the very unity of the country; but hope was the feeling I felt and the reason I cast my ballot and it will be the reason I cast my ballot in a week. Prime Minister Stephen Harper just gave me my hope back.

As you can read I am quite mollified. HOWEVER the Conservatives still must post the full PDF on the website so we can read it. It’s not really a platform if it’s not available to everyone.

  34. Bruce says:

    Example of a, so called, pollster being impartial;

Nik Nanos said he doesn’t put any stock in the weekend effect.

“I know the Conservatives would like to think that because they usually poo-poo the numbers,” he said.

  35. paulsstuff says:

The CPC war room should be bringing forth things like this article Wilson linked to on another blog. Looks to me like our PM was actually on the ball quite early on the economy issue.

  36. frmgrl says:

May, they did post their full PDF platform right here, 40 pgs.
http://www.conservative.ca/EN/5317/106938 Click on the picture and there you have it. The picture I think is the cover.

  37. Karol Karolak says:

    Hi Joanne,
Tough times ahead and Bob Rae wants us to elect psychotherapist not an economist for PM.

    Read here: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20081007.welxntoryplatform1007/BNStory/Front

  38. bluetech says:

    I don’t trust Nanos for a minute.
But that doesn’t explain the other polls.

  39. Bruce says:

The other pollsters are no better, many have direct ties to the Liberals, but after all is said and done there is only one poll that counts and that is on October 14th. So go vote and help get the vote out.

  40. Joanne says:

    Good advice, Bruce.

  41. paulsstuff says:

Hi Joanne. Just sent you a juicy e-mail.

  42. Sol says:

Am watching the American Presidential debate….Canada should take note, because the Americans know what a debate is and how to conduct one.

Respectful, issues explained, platforms explained at length, no interruptions, and they’re talking to real people…their people.

    What’s wrong with us?

  43. May says:

Thanks frmgrl; that wasn’t up when I first checked there: There was some text but I don’t think it was all there. It took some time to get it all on the web site. It’s there now that’s what matters. Mission accomplished. Now I’m happy.

  44. Joanne says:

Paul, aren’t you supposed to be studying? ;)

  45. paulsstuff says:

Paul, aren’t you supposed to be studying?

I can only do a little at a time and then I get distracted. I’m pretty confident I should hit high 80% range.

And blogging is way more fun:0)

  46. May says:

Final evaluation: Now that I’ve read the thing that was well worth the wait. Wonderful. It’s not right-wing by any stretch; but it’s not the “mushy middle” either. This is a beautiful piece of what is known as “Compassionate Conservativism.” Blue to the bone; but caring and centre-right. This is perfect because it’s exactly what I believe in: it’s my underlying philosophy and it’s how I try to live my life. There is nothing in this plan I disagree with and 95% of it I agree with wholeheartedly. This is a true conservative platform and much better then the 2006 one. I also love that they have the numbers again. I really need to go to bed and sleep on this but wow. One more reason to keep praying for a majority.
