Why is MSM ignoring the ever-evolving story of Stephane Dion’s apparent plagiarism of a speech given by Dr. Robert Corell to the U.S. Senate committee chaired by John McCain? Trusty Tory broke it yesterday with the assistance of Paulsstuff’s excellent detective work. I thought this would be all over the news today.
As far as I can see, MSM is largely ignoring the story. The only news site to pick it up seems to be Macleans, and Kady O’Malley is doing her best to minimize the damage for her favourite party.
After reading the follow-up post by Trusty Tory, I am inclined to agree with his first commenter: It’s time to drop Macleans from my subscription list. I don’t support the Liberal party so why would I make a donation there?
Excuse me while I go rip up my renewal notice.

Update: Lowell Green is covering this story now. Listen live. (H/T Trusty Tory)
Stephane Dion gets away with being a copycat – Russ Campbell’s Blog . (Is anyone worried about our democracy here, when MSM is so decidedly biased? And then we have Elections Canada telling Liberals to take down Conservative signs. Check out Stephen Taylor for that one. And this is a free country?)
Some MSM finally getting on the bandwagon, but not in print:

Stephen Taylor – A debunking by Kady? I’m sorry, I just don’t see it.

Why hasn’t Jack Layton brought Dion’s repeat plagiarism to the podium?
Likely because it was an ‘environmental’ speech, which is next to being a saint for the cause,
where as PMSHs writter plagiarised on the very evil subject of ‘war’ (in 2003, when Canadians were polling 48% in favor of going into Iraq)
Bob Rae did a huge media availability for the Harper speech. If the CPC thought this was important they would do the same. But I think it would just come across as petty.
But good enough for blogs, talking points on talk shows, etc.
may be someone should phone in to peter vandusen on the nitely talking part and bring this up to him he will say something about it.
Probably the reason the media isn’t picking up on it is because there hasn’t been a candidate who has made a stink to the media over this. If a high-profile person were to bring this up, then the media would pick up on it.
Because it is a blog — and by extension, the competition of the old media — they aren’t going to advertise this fact very much.
now your ripping up your Maclean’s subscription? between albums and magazines, i imagine the cultural landscape is getting pretty bleak around your place?
what’s next? book burnings?
This is starting to gain traction. CFRA 580 is taking calls on it now.
“now your ripping up your Maclean’s subscription? between albums and magazines, i imagine the cultural landscape is getting pretty bleak around your place?”
Jeff – have you answered my question as to whether the FACTOR grant is one being “cut”? Please.
Plain and simple, the MSM is stumping for Dion as a “gotcha” strategy of their own to get back at Harper.
Remember that is has been the MSM propping Dion up all through the last sitting of parliament, but I also admit that they took their shots at Dion also but not with the same hate on that they have with Harper. Also remember that it was the MSM which have ramped up the scare tactics behind a Harper majority. It was they not Harper touting Majority….Harper has never indicated anything else but that he’s be happy with a minority(for the reasons I stated earlier).
I recall someone on this blog saying that this campaign isn’t between Harper and the opposition parties. This is between Harper and the media, and what we see happening is proof positive of the bias that we get served by the MSM.
Is it any wonder folks are turning to the internet and blogs to be heard? It’s because the media isn’t listening to balanced viewpoints….they have their own agenda and unless they’re essentially reporting on the scandals and scare-tactics that they themselves spawned.
The Dion plagiarism story is more of the same double standard we’ve come to expect of the media and of the entitled Liberal party themselves.
WHICH reminds me, with Paul Martin’s book making such a big splash, I’m reminded of the Liberal corruption that Canadians were so fed up with last election.
Same Liberal party – different day, and taxpayers have still not heard when they can expect the Liberals to pay back adscam money.
CFRA 580 is taking calls on it now.
Listening now. Thanks, TT.
Dion is on CTV right now saying that Harper might speak better English than he does, but that he (Dion) always speaks the truth in both French and English!!!
This needs to be challenged.
what’s next? book burnings?
Just watch me.
Will this hurt or help PMSH???:
Ontario may fall into deficit, Finance Minister says
Canwest News Service
October 07, 2008
…”Two weeks ago, there weren’t European banks being propped up,” he told reporters. “Two weeks ago, the world is a very different place.”
Mr. Duncan said that despite ailing manufacturing and forestry sectors, Ontario appears in “solid” shape — for the moment.
“We continue to watch it carefully,” he said. “We will adjust as circumstance dictates.” Mr. Duncan said he is consulting with the heads of major banks as well as provincial regulators, but admitted that widespread uncertainty is making it hard to predict economic outcomes.”

Sorry, having a really hard time seeing the smoking gun here – if you actually read the speech in it’s entirety you see under global impacts that Mr. Dion sites the 1st Arctic Climate Impact Assessment. If you go future and read the 1st ACIA, you will see that Mr. Dion is simply citing the conclusions of the report.
“Last November, the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment was received at the fourth Arctic Council Ministerial meeting in Reykjavik, Iceland. This is the first climate assessment of the Arctic – a result of four years of international efforts from over 300 scientists, as well as traditional knowledge of Northern Indigenous peoples.
The Assessment confirms what our own science and the people of the Arctic have been telling us for many years: the Arctic is already experiencing some of the most rapid and severe climate change on earth.”
As mentioned, all of the statements that he made earlier in his speech were based on the findings of this report, and it should be noted that Dr. Robert Corell, was (is?) the chair of the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment, so it would stand to reason that they would be saying the same thing when speaking to the potential dangers of arctic warming.
Joanne,
Don’t just rip up your renewal notice. Phone/email them of your intentions and give specific reasons why. They may or may not respond to you, but if enough people do that they will eventually have to notice. Personally, I never have subscribed to Maclean’s because just like the Mop and Pail, they have always been shills for the Liberals and getting Andrew Coyne on the editorial staff did nothing to change that.
What pisses me off about this whole thing is the stink that the liberals made over PMSH. Now that Dion has been outed we get the standard “nothing to see here” or it is not the same. Well they are right it is not the same. Just addressing the plagiarism issue, for Dion to do it it is worse because he is an academic, a former professor and therefore is supposed to know better. How many students of his were sanctioned by him for plagiarism?
talk about the politics of fear, but I thought Kinsella was above the fray when approving some items on his blog.
BT regulars will want to read a post by Rob01-11:49am under Warren’s daily summary. Seems that it’s ok to hide behind the Toronto Star these days.
BSB – This letter would be grounds for a law suit, I would think:
Kudos to the Star for exposing yet another obvious Stephen Harper- ordered dirty trick. The cutting of brake lines on Liberal supporters’ cars in the Toronto St. Paul’s riding is typical neocon behaviour. Stay on this story, or better yet, get Bob Rae and his investigative team on it. Between the two groups, I’m positive you will find a link between this callous threat to Liberals’ lives and the Harper Conservatives, even if you have to make it up. Everybody knows how mean the Tories are.
Kirk Cederberg, Streetsville
I am shocked that they would publish a letter that would seem to be so libellous!
On the other hand, perhaps Mr. Cederberg was trying to be sarcastic.
hard to tell if he’s being sarcastic (if not this individual is a real loon) but if a letter like that were in the Sun accusing Dion of the same, it would be the lead story on CBC
For anyone wondering why Dion plagiarized the report and not Dr. Correll, here is where the professors pointed out the differance:
Corell said key findings of the report indicate that Arctic climate change is occurring at a rate much greater than climate change as a whole, and with more significant consequences.
Correll then went on to list the points Dion used in his speech. Correll directly attributes the facts to the report.
Dion? Uh, no.
“Jeff – have you answered my question as to whether the FACTOR grant is one being “cut”? Please.”
I am assuming that by your silence, Jeff; the FACTOR grant has not been cut but all those recipients are joining the fray – well – just because it sounds like a fun thing to do. Am I right, Jeff.
OMG,what does it take to get the media in this country to report things of this nature when it applies to the oppostion parties??? The conservative voices in Canada are slowly being silenced, and it’s quite frightening. They hammered the P.M. (front page news) for days on this plagiarism nonsense. Why does Dion not get the same treatment??? Apparently Dion’s speech was not just a few similar words here and there, but full sentences AND paragraphs.
How do we start a new newspaper in the country??
