It just gets worse with Atwood
Lots to talk about today, so I’ll probably do a series of shorter posts.
You can start your morning with this stomach-turning piece of garbage from Margaret Atwood, the outraged Canadian writer who is begging for more of our tax-dollars, while supporting the separatists:
…Doesn’t Mr. Harper understand that some kids have lethal allergies? Doesn’t he understand that parents want to know what goes into their children’s mouths? We need to be able to trust our food! Mothers, don’t let Stephen Harper kiss your baby: you don’t know what kind of germ-packed, death-dealing cold-cuts he’s just been eating, and his ingredients are not on the label….
And aren’t good writers supposed to try to avoid clichés?
‘Secret agenda’? ‘Bush’? ‘Neocons’?
C’mon, Margaret. You can do better than that! Anyway, I think you forgot ‘Mike Harris’.
Good grief. This woman makes Elizabeth May look like she’s on tranquilizers.

Want to become even more ill Joanne? Kinsella’s playing the politics of fear this morning.
I saw a new CPC ad last night, it’s just like the Liberal ads actually, black/white ripped from the headlines etc.
Really disappointed in my Conservative candidate in my riding. All candidates meeting last night he was just plain bad compared to the fire of the Liberal and NDP.
Didn’t infuse any emotion in his answers about jobs and economy, which is important here in Volvo territory. And his website is crap…a blog that hasn’t been updated since Oct. 1, and what it says is what he had for lunch and how many doors he knocked on. Who cares? What are you hearing and what are you selling on behalf of Harper?
I voted for Harper in spite of my lacklustre candidate.
I sure hope the Tory war room has something left in the tank for the next week. Paulstuff???

I’m just wondering if Wacky Jack and Atwood came out of the same clone pod? Same old looney left-extremist lines. A bad piece by a less than mediocre writer. Obviously logic is not her best quality.

I’ve helped out my local CPC candiate the last two elections….Cheryl Gallant. She’s learned to keep to the subjects that matter. She will win easily here. But…come on….where’s the passion Mr Harper?
You want to be PM of this country but it sure doesnt look like it. This is so frustrating. Conservative’s are subjected to a different level of scrutiny…fine…live with it and rise above it. Cuts to the Arts should never be done in an election..that was plain stupid. Puffins…Ritz…all these things can go away if Mr Harper decides he really wants the job. Your in a fight right now Mr Harper because you look and sound like you could care less. If he and the Cons dont stand up and fight for what they believe in..and I mean fight…then they do not deserve to lead this country. Polls dont lie…I’ve been a Harper supporter but now I’m starting to question him and his leadership….because he looks and sounds like all this is such a pain in the ass to him. He’s got 6 days to undo his reputation as cold and calculating and uncaring…and its his own fault.

Harper looks exhausted. He’s not only up against the 4 lefties, he’s got the MSM to deal with.
CPC candidates have get there act together.Billg …glad you are helping out.

Atwood…hmmm well isn’t fiction her forte’ ? Good luck with getting my support, when you are beaking about voting Bloc.
cheers Bubba

As much as the $45M ‘arts and culture’ cuts wake up the sense that Conservatives aren’t touchy feely enough for the lefties in Canada (which are a slight majority), reality of an economic downturn means cutbacks, in governments and at home.
How many MRI machines would $45 million buy?
How far would $45 million go on retraining laid off manufacturing workers?
IMO this crowd of elitists looks like the ones not in touch with Canadians, not PMSH.
October 7th, 2008 at 9:49 am
AND, there is only one way to stop the ’stop a Harper majority’ strategic voting, and that is to not be in majority territory in the polls,
and have people instead thinking of which leader will ‘give us shelter’. There are 15% undecideds.
Canadians are not stupid.
So what would Dion do? Cut transfer payments to the provinces , Martin’s approach?
Take the Rae Daze approach and spend spend spend?
There is no EI surplus for Libs to use to hand out goodies, like last time they reined.

Well said, Bluetech. My husband told me he heard Harper will be on live at noon and then later this afternoon for an hour long interview with Peter Mainsbridge, and that’s not all on his agenda for today.
He’s doing a lot, but he also can’t be seen to sound the alarms about the economy because that could affect our markets. The opposition leaders can afford to be more emotional.
October 7th, 2008 at 10:15 am
Does anyone remember about a year ago when the Prime Minister sounded the alarm about the economy?
They took action then which i understand has mitigated the effects of the present downturn.
Good grief people!!!!
Any thinking person should be giving credit to Mr Harper for being proactive and ahead of events.
He is an economist after all.
I just heard Graham Richardson say - Ya, Ya, but hes not warm enough.
Is that the kind of crap thats going to cost the Conservatives a majority?
October 7th, 2008 at 10:15 am
Bob Rae did a huge media availability for the Harper speech. If the CPC thought this was important they would do the same. But I think it would just come across as petty.
But good enough for blogs, talking points on talk shows, etc.

Why is it Canadians want answers from PMSH NOW,
but no Canadian backlash on Dion’s (eyesrolling) plan, ”give me 5 weeks and I’ll get back to you”.
October 7th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Does Quebec want another liberal government? Isn’t that what could happen with the ABC. It seems the main message of this campaign has been not to give PMSH a majority. It has not been to deny him a minority. That was a given that he would get a minority. Think about it, do voters really want another election this January. Are quebec artists so selfish they will cost us another 300 million to go to the polls again in very short order.
The question is, who will be the better PM with or without a majority in these troubling times. Is it the time to try to raise our taxes, new social programs, the carbon tax, national daycare.
I don’t believe that people tell the pollsters the truth on a daily basis.
I visited that anti Harpervote site to see what it was. Clicked on all the ridings in play. To think they are recommending that Garth be re-elected is sick. There stats show that the conservatives will get 130 seats, but if you vote strategically, it will reduce them to 75. They are assuming that everyone who voted for a certain party will switch their vote and those thousands will go to defeat a conservative and vote for their pick. A few might but to think that many voters are lemmings is hard to believe.
How many ndp voters will not vote in Lunn’s riding since their man is gone. They might be very mad over this and out of spite vote Lunn, not liberal.
Has there ever been an election where so many candidates have dropped out. We need a statute of limitations on bringing up actions, words, associations that happened in the last century, unless those actions and associations have continued to the present time.
Riding associations need to be more watchful of who they nominate. Oct 15 is not too soon to start thinking of the next election and candidate.
We have known for 2 years there would be an election, but everyone assumed it would be Oct 2009 and sat on their behinds thinking they had lots of time and could just trash and threaten the govt.
The opposition was reallly not ready for an election, at the local level. And all politics is local.
Voters also have to take more interest in their riding associations, instead of just allowing a few insiders to have all the say.
Montreal is going to lose 70 million dollars next year with the race gone. Hotels, restaurants will be hard hit. I suppose the job losses will be blamed on the PM.
October 7th, 2008 at 12:31 pm
The PM is about to unveil his platform.
We should listen to what he says then watch what the cbc says he said.
October 7th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
Good idea, Mary T!
Harper’s giving a Kickass speech (to borrow Kinsella’s phrase.)
October 7th, 2008 at 1:02 pm
First protester ejected, with sign Stop Global Warming
Loved his explanation of a new plan made on the fly to meet media deadlines is not a plan.
The crisis did not start 2 weeks ago, began in Aug 2007 and since that time we have taken action.
OH OH, he is plagerising his speech give to this same audience months ago, where he predicted the things happening NOW.
Tariff abolished on imported equipment for manufacturing.
200 million each for auto and aero space programs.
Lower taxes, controlled spending and no deficit.
Cost of plan, has been fully costed.
If we do not win re-election it will make Bob Rae’s Ontario look like a boom time.
Stronger, better and more prosperous.
October 7th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
This speech should be up on all blogs and u-tube. I agree, it was kick-ass, emotion, all guns blazing.
Will Quebec listen, will Ont listen. Will those employed in the manufacturing and auto sector listen.
Lost of incentives for those companies, which would help save jobs.
Tax free saving accounts are great idea. Those facing future job loss due to closures could have money put into them while making the big bucks and take it out tax free till things turn around and new jobs are found.
I liked how he said a plan made to meet the media deadlines is not a plan. A plan is prepared and implemented so no panic action is needed.
