Live-blogging choices for the English Debate

So far I’ve found two live-blogging sites:

National Post seems to be preparing for live-blogging on both the U.S. and Canadian debates.

Macleans will be covering the Canadian English Leadership debates, as they did last night with the French.

I’m sure there are plenty of blogs live-blogging as well.

If all else fails, try Stephen Taylor’s Debate Drinking Game.

Or you can weigh in here. No reason to be bored tonight if you are a political junkie. Cheers!

*   *   *   *

BTW, my expectations for Stephane Dion tonight are very high. So if he doesn’t measure up, then he will lose!

(The preceding was Lame-Stream Media logic.)

And Matt promises to live-blog tonight!

  1. Yay, Harper got a shot in at Dion right off the bat!

  2. Tonight I am not using closed caption to see what dion is saying so most of his stmts will be unintelligible to me. As for drinking, is anyone following that game still sober.
May is being very ignorant and again it is 4 against one.

  3. They are all afraid of PMSH as they continue to interupt him so he can’t get his message out.
May brings up 1997 and a speech he made then.

  4. Layton supporting May. And May wants the dollar lowered to compete.

  5. They are all afraid of PMSH as they continue to interupt him so he can’t get his message out.

Exactly. Steve Paikin isn’t doing a very good job of moderating so far.

  6. Basically, this is a ‘Bash-Harper’ event. Whoever says Bush and Big oil the most wins.

  7. So far PMSH is keeping his cool. May on the dollar again, not good for families for dad to go to Fort Mc to work for month and leave mom and kids alone.
It is not our fault that foreign owners are moving the jobs out of canada. No way they will come back.
Unions have caused more job losses than the govt has, IMO.
Who was in charge when most of those companies moved, who allowed all those union contracts, who chose union over jobs. Have another drink, Layton brought up Tommy Douglas.
Job losses, did we survive the loss of the local bread man, milk man, ice man, local blacksmith shops,
door to door salesmen for brushes, spices, dried fruit, encyclopedias. Yes we did and we will survive yes we did.

  8. May just copied the greenshift-tax on things we don’t want and reduce taxes on income. She also brought up Clinton.

  9. I wish dion would clarify between a family earning 20,000, with two kids, and the amount of that money that would be taxable. Big difference between income and taxable income.

  10. Somebody tell May this is the National Election Debate,ot the Central-Nova debate. If she mentions the shipyard one more time I’ll puke.

  11. Everyone calling PMSH a liar.

  12. Elizabeth May is a fraud.

  13. “Elizabeth May is a fraud”

That’s a nicer name than I was going to use.

  14. The only way to get more doctors in Canada ASAP is to allow them in from other countries. I attended several high school graduations this year and only one of the several dozens of those on the stage had a medical career in mind. Most of the boys were heading for the trades. The girls were going into other areas, one was going into education. On the other hand I have a friend who has been waiting 3 years to get into nursing school. If there are no spaces, no nurses or doctors. Who cut medical spaces in Ontario.
Unless we go the communist way and go to the classrooms and say, you and you and you will be a doctor, nurse etc. If no one wants to go thru the hassle of a medical degree, and face lawsuits for leaving a scar, or telling a family the wrong sex of a baby. Stop the malpractice suits for trivial things and you might get more medical people.

  15. Harper got a shot at Layton re private clinics, and Layton called it a cheap shot.
In Alberta drugs are covered for people up to a certain income level. OH, gilles has a daughter and son in the movie industry in Que. Conflict of interest there.

  16. Paikin just asked if Conservative’s are barbarians?

  17. Paul, I couldn’t believe my ears. What’s up with Paikin? Is he trying to stir things up?

  18. And my respect for Paikin just evaporated with one stupid ignorant question.

Maybe he should ask if the leaders think the Liberal’s are thiefs.

  19. Alberta Girl Says:
    October 2nd, 2008 at 10:14 pm

Hey McLeans live blogging actually says Harper won the arts part!

  20. “Paikin just asked if Conservative’s are barbarians?”

I take Paikin’s question in a good way. It puts those oh so tolerant progressives on the spot. I know damn well that they believe conservatives are barbarians, but Paikin put them in the position of having to lie … which they did.

  21. May is getting mad, she will blow up before this is over. She is interrupting again. Dion will have more movies but will anyone go to see them.
PMSH is still keeping his temper. Too bad the rest haven’t done the same.
Now they are on Crime. Need to solve the problems that cause crime. Why not tighten up the immigration system and keep a lot of those potential gang members out. By the time they get here, they are grown up and a basketball court will not help. They come here to commit crime, get new members for their gangs.
May mentions literacy, I thought those kids went to school, so is it the school system and teachers unions who are responsible for young offenders. The kids can’t read so they go out and commit a crime.

  22. I have never seen a more poorly moderated debate involving Canada’s major political parties.

I was embarrassed for the moderator Steve Paiken (?Paikin). Asking if the other political parties thought that Harper was a barbarian for cutting some arts funding???? As a moderator, Steve Paikin did not come up to standard.

This was not a debate. It was ridiculous.

And as for Elizabeth May……I found her tone argumentative and unreasonable…and her finger pointing was over the top.

  23. Harper just zinged Dion over the judicial discretion question. Sweet.

  24. May remids me of a female clown in my son’s Mario Wii game, only the clown is lovable.

  25. Next time there is a debate, the Conservatives should insist on another moderator.

  26. Yay, Jack’s going after Dion’s voting record!

  27. Hey Dr. Fullerton! Welcome. Please mention that at the Macleans live-blog link!

They need some balance over there.

  28. Bush’s name has now been mentioned 37 times.

  29. They thought the barbarian question was disgusting at Maclean’s as well Joanne.

  30. Alberta Girl Says:
    October 2nd, 2008 at 10:30 pm

They need some balance over there.

Boy that’s the truth!! I don’t know “who” they have in their “rooms”, but there not Harper fans!

  31. 4 hours in two night of 4 on 1 attacks. Next election I suggest that the PM debate each of the other leaders for one hour, 1 on 1. The same four hours would be taken up but maybe some sense would be made of it. Afghan is up, have another drink, again is anyone still sober. The game should be everytime one of the leaders says one of the items they have to take a drink. Only sober one still standing at the end would be PMSH.

  32. Bush’s name has now been mentioned 37 times.

Paul, you were keeping track? Good for you.

They really should have a moratorium on the word “Bush”. It’s getting beyond tedious.

  33. Gilles just made an honest stmt, he will not be PM and he looked at Dion and Layton and said and 3 of your wont either, you know it but wont admit it.
I might learn to like him.

  34. Alberta Girl Says:
    October 2nd, 2008 at 10:39 pm

Mary - I had a good laugh at that.

Now Dion is mumbling about something but I still can’t understand him!!

  35. Wouldn’t Layton have to get those tax cuts thru a budget.

  36. Alberta Girl Says:
    October 2nd, 2008 at 10:41 pm

Oh I think this is the first time Jack has said “kitchen table” - Good for him - mind you he negated it by saying 50 billion tax cut!!

  37. “Now Dion is mumbling about something but I still can’t understand him!!.

I’m beginning to think he either has loose dentures or recently had some painful dental surgery.

  38. I wonder if Stephane Dion would claw back pension-splitting?

  39. Some people think Duceppe speaks well and clearly. Personally, I can’t take his nasal twang and the slurring of words.

And May deserves a good slap … sorry, but she brings out some violent reactions in me.

  40. Layton just threw in all the tables now. Kitchen, boardroom and cabinet!

  41. Paikin just asked a good question: Should politicians ever change their minds without being accused of breaking the people’s trust?

  42. Bush=41 times

  43. And May deserves not one but several slaps, for the way she shows contempt for Mr. Harper.

  44. Put a muzzle on May.

  45. Layton, we have seen (kitchen table again) ndp governments in a few provinces and we saw what Bob Rae did to Ontario. Sask is finally coming out of its years of ndp. Manitoba is more conservative than ndp, and BC has had years of bad govt and their ndp premiers and those premiers have turned to the liberal party.

  46. Hey, thanks for keeping me company here tonight, everyone! It’s much better sharing your frustration with others.

All in all, I think things went well except for Paikin, May, and well, Layton and Dion, and Duceppe…

  47. May’s a single mother, go figure? Who, man or woman, would want to be with that?

  48. My verdict on the English Debate:

Well that was a waste of two hours of my life. They were all yelling at each other and interrupting each other (minus Harper who was the one getting yelled at mostly) and I couldn’t hear anything. That was terrible. One thing I did hear was Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush. It gets old. Nobody won that it was a draw; Dion lost because I have no clue what the heck he’s saying but nobody won.

Biggest loser is that darn table. Get rid of it! When will these people learn if you don’t have mikes that automatically cut off when the time is up there is no freaking point. It was worst then the 2004 debate. Ugh. Watching two hours of that was torture. I should have watched the American one. The things we do for love of country eh?

  49. Biggest loser is that darn table.

    May, that was priceless!!!

  50. May’s a single mother, go figure? Who, man or woman, would want to be with that?

Bruce, you mean Lizzie May, right?

  51. LOL

  52. If keeping your cool and not being a total jerk Harper won. Still it was nasty.

  53. Sorry I meant to say “counts” after the word jerk

  54. I was finally able to get into the National Post site just now. It was overloaded all night.

You can read the replay of the live-blogging event. They seem to think that Layton really scored on Dion.

John Turley-Ewart: Good on Jack — he has called Dion on not standing up to Harper in the Commons and passing 43 Tory bills. If you can’t do your job as opposition leader what are you doing running for PM — great line.

  55. Yes Joanne, I do mean Lizzie May.

  56. I got turfed out of NP just after the first hour and couldn’t get back in.. that ticked me off. Macleans wasn’t nearly as entertaining!

  57. That’s what I thought, Bruce.

Thanks. I didn’t want our friend ‘May’ here to be offended.

Yes, Elizabeth May was totally disgusting tonight. She was boorish and I think it hurt her.

If she had been gracious and made her points properly, she would have done better.

  58. Alberta Girl Says:
    October 2nd, 2008 at 11:36 pm

Sheila Copps is trying to tell everyone that Dion got lots of time to explain his program - the only problem is - no body could understand him!!!!

  59. The next time either May or Dion point to Sweden as so successful in reducing GHGs because of their carbon tax, I think I’ll scream.

    What neither mention is:
    1. Canada is the 2nd largest country in the world in surface area, sweden is 49th. Their distances are shorter than ours transportation-wise.

    2. Sweden has 10 nuclear power plants which produce about 48% of its electricity.
Canada has 16-18 nuclear power plants which produce only 15% of its electricity.

    3. The Greens are against nuclear power.

  60. the only thing that matters after tonight in my opinion is that Layton beat Dion and deserves 2nd place as official opposition.

We better pray that May loses to Peter McKay because Question Period in the house will be hell if we need to listen to her shrill voice and interruptions. By the end of the debate I was yelling “shut up already” at May’s disrespectful nature to Harper. She’s one froot loop she is.

Why when didn’t anyone bring up Liberal corruption or Adscam when that woman asked about why folks should bother voting when promises get broken and governments lose their way? A missed opportunity there for Harper at least.

I don’t thin Pakin was all that bad actually. I think he tossed out the controversial stuff because that’s his style, and as someone said earlier it made their answers all lies.

Layton at least made and attempt and mentioned the Volvo closure. It was a good effort but he said it manufactured aerospace equipment. No, it’s machines for construction, road graders etc.

I’m pretty sure that the underdog won. That being the guy who was ganged up on….Harper.

  61. It’s official!Fife and Oliver have declared PMSH the clear winner….and talked about just how much trouble Libs are in.

  62. I would like the war room to do an ad showing the thousands of men/women working in the oil sands, from the drillers to the waitresses in the restaurants and bars, then I would like it mentioned how many of them are from Atlantic areas or NFLD. Next I would like to see how many jobs are in the manufacturing industries in Ont and Quebec that depends on orders from Alberta.
Next, show some shut down of any plant and equate it with job losses in Ont or Que, or Atlantic families having to go on welfare, kids not getting their wants, with a message, sorry you have to quit hockey, piano, etc cause daddy is out of work in Alberta.
You get the idea. That message has to get out.
Next another ad showing that one can drive across many european countries in one day, so mass transportation is possible. Then drive across Canada or even a Province in one day.
PMSH has to explain what programs were cut in the arts, show examples of them and why they didn’t work.
Duceppe has a conflict of interest in this issue as his kids are in the business of making movies.
Another ad should show all the small businesses, mom and pop farms, independant truckers, and others who are incorporated and will be hit hard by Laytons plan. Tip, when you go to a store, hire a contactor or whatever, look for the letters LTD. That is a corporation. They are all not Exxons etc.
I think PMSH was waiting for the debates to be over and will now come out with all the guns aimed at Dion.
And, what is with the cbc, giving so much credit to lizzie. Are they trying to get voters to switch from NDP so Dion can stay opposition leader.
Glad the advance polls are open soon so I can mark my X.
PMSH is getting bashed for not saying anything new about the economy. I think that was so the other leaders could put out their plans for carbon tax, increased taxes, social spending etc. Watch for him to attack those in the next few days.

  63. Go vote at G&M poll on who won tonite…so far results are:
    PMSH 41%
    Dion 24%
    Layton 26%
    May 7%
Lets put PMSH over the top!
BTW comments for article (by galloway) on debate..over 400..have disappeared.Hmmmm, wonder why???

  64. And how about this picture in the Star ? If they had waited a couple of seconds he would have been gone altogether.

  65. We better pray that May loses to Peter McKay because Question Period in the house will be hell if we need to listen to her shrill voice and interruptions. By the end of the debate I was yelling “shut up already” at May’s disrespectful nature to Harper. She’s one froot loop she is.

Sol, I read that to my husband and he had a good chuckle. But you’re right about McKay. Bloggers need to give him all the help we can. Prayers would be good too.

I don’t thin Pakin was all that bad actually. I think he tossed out the controversial stuff because that’s his style, and as someone said earlier it made their answers all lies.

I think Gabby had mentioned something along that line as well. I admit Paikin seemed to be a bit more fair in the second half. My husband wondered if they were getting complaints and perhaps someone told him to give the PM more time to respond. He noticed Paikin was wearing an earpiece so I guess that could be the case.

Layton at least made and attempt and mentioned the Volvo closure. It was a good effort but he said it manufactured aerospace equipment. No, it’s machines for construction, road graders etc.

Actually, I didn’t know that either. Thanks for setting me straight.

Good stuff, Gabby. I was sitting there thinking, ‘I wonder what Lorrie Goldstein would say about that’.

Thanks for the facts. I may use them in the future.

  67. …PMSH is getting bashed for not saying anything new about the economy. I think that was so the other leaders could put out their plans for carbon tax, increased taxes, social spending etc. Watch for him to attack those in the next few days.

All good points, Mary T. The war room would do well to read your whole comment.

I think they are still coming out with their complete platform, but I think they should do it soon.

  68. Jad, typical Star partisan garbage. Never mind that they had probably all been there for ages. *Sigh*

  69. [...] Steve. Maybe we were a bit hard on you. Sorry about that. Posted in Federal Election [...]
