Stephen Taylor has a YouTube clip posted in which Andrew Telegdi states the following:
"…In fact I have even cooperated with Elizabeth May on immigration and citizenship issues. and I agree with her that job #1 is to elect Stephen Harper as Prime Minister …"
Note the chuckles in the audience and then applause. Telegdi seem oblivious to his mistake.
The Record reports that "during the second hour, he clarified his position and said "to his horror" he was told by one of his workers about his comment."
But wasn’t Telegdi reading from his notes? So he either inadvertently substituted Harper’s name for Dion’s when reading or it was actually written that way.
In any case, I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised that some Liberal candidates are getting confused, when their leader is having so many problems himself.
The other side of this is if Telegdi actually meant to say that he and Elizabeth May agree that their #1 job is to elect Stephane Dion as PM, then doesn’t that legitimize the concerns of Jack Layton and Stephen Harper regarding the leadership debates – i.e. that there would be two Pro-Liberal candidates?

Update: The Telegdi camp has posted a YouTube clip as an explanation (H/T Newstalk 570.)
So Telegdi really meant to say that job one is to elect Stephane Dion as Prime Minister. Is that Elizabeth May’s top priority as well? If so, where does Stephane Dion stand on the seal hunt, and how does Premier Danny Williams reconcile all of this in his ABC campaign?
More information: I have located the official Liberal party stand on the seal hunt, which is that they support it. This is a fundamental contrast with Elizabeth May’s stance on the issue. Therefore, how can Elizabeth May support Stephane Dion for Prime Minister if he is in favour of the hunt, and she is 100% against it?
Warren Kinsella lists the Grits under the "Loser" category today:
"…now the Grits are seeing why some of us were appalled that they signed a non-aggression pact with Ms. May. She’s stealing votes from you, fellas! She was ALWAYS going to steal votes from you, for Pete’s sake!"
Now what do you say to that, Mr. Telegdi?

Make that three pro-Liberal candidates. You are forgetting that Jack has already floated a trial balloon suggesting a coalition government with the Libs. It would be four except Duceppe realizes that any sign that he supports the Liberals would result in a Kim Campbell type election result for the Bloc.
The first all candidates debate was held in my riding last night in front of an over flow crowd at the university. Non students probably outnumbered the students, The seating for the candidates was interesting. On one end was the Conservative, then in order it was First Nations, Green, Liberal, Marxist-Lenin, and the incumbent NDP. The far left NDP and M-L candidates ignored each other. The red-green combo ignored each other. If you listened to the left the First Nations and the Conservative candidates should be at loggerheads because of the cancellation of the Kelowna Accord and the supposed bigotry of the Conservatives. Instead they kept whispering humorous comments to one another.
One of the best parts of the night came when Tony Martin tried to claim how great a job he had done for the Soo. He said a grant for a local project had his fingerprints all over it. Cameron Ross the Conservative candidate replied with, “The cheque might have had your fingerprints all over it, but it had Tony Clement’s signature on it.” Another highlight came when the Liberal candidate started to defend the Liberal missing in action record on confidence votes. The whole room burst out in laughter. There is an old saying in politics, you can win if they love you or hate you but if they laugh at you your dead. Liberals, R.I.P.
Did Elizabeth May really ever say that her job number one was to elect Stephane Dion as Prime Minister?

Heh. I crawled over some Liberal knob in a post some time back when he claimed that the reason the Libs were abstaining on confidence votes was to allow the Harper government time to hang itself. Some of you may have seen his posts. This is the guy who kept posting “you are cornered, you are contained.” Seems he’s off somewhere eating humble pie as I don’t see his posts anymore. At any rate, I argued that nobody was going to be fooled by his nonsense that abstention was a brilliant strategy and that Canadians instead would see it for what it was: weak, self-serving, unprincipled and a total abrogation of responsibility. Furthermore, it allowed the conservatives to appear strong and decisive, to build a record of accomplishments and to keep most of their promises. You know that when someone as partisan as Red Tory slams the Liberal voting record, your brilliant strategy ain’t so brilliant.
Stephen LeDrew has an op-ed in the National Post today that puts forward the opinion that the Liberals should “take a lickin” (my quote) for the good of the party so that they can go through a real renewal this time. Ledrew is past president of the Lib Party.
sorry can’t find link (which always get caught in the “spam-jail”!!)
And the Libs continue to eat their young!take a read of column in Nat.Post today,by none other than Stephen LeDrew,a very ‘high-up’ Lib…’Libs need a near death experience’ According to Fife,on the trail with the Libs, this is very disheartning news, especially coming from a Lib insider.very good read.
As for this whole arts and culture mess,I see the cbc is really pushing this agenda, covering a press conf.by a bunch of ‘actors’..ctv didn’t cover it.Hmmm,is the cbc getting worried?I really feel, that majority of mainstream Joe Six-Pack Canadians would far and away prefer this artsy-fartsy funding be put into Healthcare, cancer research, any kind of medical funding…as opposed to more Little Mosque, the porn show Kink, and other cbc produced ???documentries, that are only made to slag the US,our military, etc.Keep it up,PMSH,we need OUR money going to much more relevant projects.

Ha! Awesome report, Swift. Thanks very much for the first-hand account. If you guys need anymore Liberal M.I.A. fodder, Stephen Taylor has it well covered.
To anybody else that has attended an all candidates’ debate in their riding, please feel free to share your experience here. Thanks.
Hey Jo,the all-candidates debate in my riding has been a non-issue for so long, hardly worth having.I live in Vic Toews riding, and there is no way,a Lib,NDP,has a hope in H.of getting too far! With a huge Mennonite population, they aren’t too fond of ‘liberal’ platforms! I will say,to add to that,I have found Vic to be extremely helpful..he has really gone to bat,to help me fight Manitoba telephone System…and got results! As soon as I spoke with him a letter was sent to MTS,so I do find him to be very pro-active.He is also highly visible in the riding..attending countless small-town celebrations, and is always available to speak to anyone. The so-called ‘scandal’ around his divorce is pretty much a non-issue.
I just watched a bit on cbc about the Libs taking the ‘immigrant’ vote for granted, and how that has changed. An interview with a rep of the Polish community, and sounds like this sector likes what PMSH is saying!
Sammy, thanks for all that. You’re lucky to have such a great MP. Mine ignores me. She won’t answer my emails any more.
Interesting about the Liberals taking the ‘immigrant’ vote for granted. They must still feel that they are entitled to it. They could be in for a big shock.
If Harper and his team are smart, they’d save this gaffe for the most opportune moment possible….the debate.
Hey, we’ve got it all on tape folks. Looks to me like he was reading from notes.
To be honest, there’s more interest in my community in the American VP debate than in our own. I’m beginning to understand why.
p.s. – That’s IT!!! That’s the hidden agenda of the Liberals!!! Vote Harper…..see also S.Ledrew’s column on his own party in the Post and that in his words they deserve a sound beating before regrouping. DUH.
I can’t believe, watching Dion speak now from Wpg,that he is slagging PMSH ‘tough on crime’ policy!Does no one prep this guy? Manitobans..especially winnipeg has been screaming for tougher laws..the NDP justice minister is FULLY behind PMSH on this! wpg is the kiddie car-theft capital of Canada, and one of the biggest outrages, was a 15 yr.old girl, that was in a stolen car, than hit a cab,and killed the driver.she LAUGHED about it..said ‘he had to die sometime!’this girl had a long record, had been home on house arrest..did it stop her? No,and she was caught shortly after in another stolen car!Again..she was released, with an ‘ankle bracelet’..she cut that off,re-arrested,still laughing at the cops.Steffie,I don’t think you are going to get much sympathy for your soft on crime b.s. in Wpg!
No, but he’s got the jailbird and criminal vote in the bag. Hey, they can vote, too!
I just don’t understand the concept of not being tough on crime. It’s almost as if they’re saying that it’s socially acceptable.
If you want another example of how right PMSH was on his stand on arts funding..take a read at the G&M comments section for the column on same ‘Artists should be landlords’ These arrogant, ass*s are really getting it handed to them!there were over 600 comments,I read thru about 100,and could find very few in favor.
I see things are well in hand here….
And yes Joanne … the fact that they are cooperating to focus on undermining the the public democratic prerogative is clear.
The good thing is that the left wing politicians as a whole are looking very frightened and desperate.
The sad thing is that they plainly have NO respect for democracy. If they did they would lay aside the farce of pretending to by a group of distinct political entities and form a single political party.
I recommend the name “Socialist Marxist Party of Canada”
Ultimately these so called progressives, a name which they choose themselves believing that it makes them in in fact progressive, will continue to reveal the nature of their motivation which is all founded on spite, mistrust and envy. These are the parties of petty grievances and authoritarian contempt for the rights of the individual citizen.
They prove it every time the speak.
Just now,on ctv, graham Richardson came pretty close to calling Dion a ‘liar’ Said Dion (in Que) just tolsd a radio audience that he spoke to a crowd of over 300 in Wpg last nite..Graham was there, said he counted the crowd, and only around 100 there.I heard Dion say to reporters in Wpg,that he is getting ‘huge crowds’yet every reporter travelling with this circus keep talking about the very poor turnouts,to the point they are now holding stump speeches at schools (where the kids aren’t even old enough to vote),but the get a ‘captive’ audience, cuz the kids get to attend a Lib.”rally” or stay in class!!!
Also,Graham told us that the Libs are in so much trouble in Que,that in one riding the Lib.candidate has been parachuted in FROM B.C.!Un-friggin-believable!
Thanks for that, Sammy!

Here here Sammy. Vic Toews is my MP as well and will continue to vote for him as long as he continues to run.
He not only represents the riding well, he represents the Province well too. I remember last year I think it was when the MB Justice minister and a bunch of other provincial dipper went to Ottawa to meet with the PM about anti-crime initiatives. NDP Judy What’s her name (I can’t say it or spell it) and Pat Martin castigated Vic over not being in Ottawa for the meeting. It turns out that Vic was in North Dakota for negotiations over the Devil’s Lake outlet. For those that don’t know, Devil’s Lake is an issue near and dear to Manitobans. The Devils Lake outlet drains water out of Devil’s Lake, which then feeds into the Red River which flows into Manitoba. There are huge environmental concerns over the potential of invasive species being fed inot our waterways. Vic was trying to stop that and the Federal NDP played politics.
I just wish he stayed as Justice Minister. My Father in Law is a former Provincial Judge and dyed in the wool Liberal supporter (unless he’s trying to yank my chain), but has but respect for Vic.
Brett, thanks for that. I met Vic at a party event during the previous election, and he struck me as really likeable and down-to-earth.
NP Joanne, I am hoping that 3 other ridings in Winnipeg go Tory Blue this election. Trevor Kennard is running against Anita Neville in Winnipeg South Centre. Trevor is a former Blue Bomber place kicker and played on our last Grey Cup team. I think that one will be too close to call given that riding was Lloyd “Soft Power” Axworthy’s old riding. I drive into work through part of that riding and most of the signs so far belong to Trevor.
Thomas Steen is vying for Bill Blakie’s old riding of “Trashcona”. Not sure how things are going there, but it is a very blue collar riding.
Shelley Glover, a serving member of Winnipeg’s finest is running against Ray Simard in St Boniface. Simard one by a narrow margin last go around and I think is vulnerable.
Rod Brunooge, who beat Reg Alcock by a slim margin last time, will retain his seat I think. Not many Liberal signs visible in that part of the city and again judging by the signs, Steven Fletcher seems to be doing well in Charlsewood-St James- Assinaboia.
I would love to see Pat Martin get booted out, but sadly I think we will have to suffer through his antics once again.
Those are the only ones I am aware of in the Winnipeg are.
Thanks Brent! You might be interested in this post as well, which has a couple of links to election prediction sites.
Hey fellow ‘toban,Brett! I think Anita Neville is in BIG trouble in her riding as well.Watching the Dion circus from the Forks last nite,Neville looked sick! When the media hounded Dion about the poor turnouts he’s been getting,Neville got pretty angry.
Also, why isn’t the msm hounding Layton about the Man.Dipper Gov’t TOTALLY supporting PMSH ‘get tough on crime’ plan? For a good read on this, and the total hypocrisy of msm, read The Black Rod blog.
The Black Rod… Thanks for reminding me about that blog, Sammy. It’s listed on my favourites sidebar. (Hard to keep up with everything.)
Simard is not vulnerable, not with the bad reputation of Glover. She has burned many bridges in the Conservative party.
Glover is not Winnipeg Finest. She had an affair with Jack Ewatski. This is the gossip traveling around in Windsor Park. Secondly, her only platform is tough on crime. Simard will win. I echo the last commnents. Vic Toews had an extra-marital affair, so this is common in the conseravative party.
