May out!
Globe - Greens out of Leaders Debate.
…On the matter of the Green Party, the consortium of broadcasters will issue the following statement: “The Consortium approached the parties to explore the possibility of including the Green Party in all or part of the Leaders’ Debates. However, three parties opposed their inclusion and it became clear that if the Green Party were included, there would be no Leaders’ Debates …
So it wasn’t just Harper opposed to the idea.
…But even as Ms. May vehemently denied she is co-operating with the Liberals, an email surfaced showing Ms. May cheering on a Liberal candidate.
This morning at 9:19 a.m., Ms. May sent an email to Brent Fullard, the new Liberal candidate in Whitby-Oshawa, Ont., and copied the email to a broad range of reporters and politicians.
“I cannot help myself!!! GOOD LUCK BRENT!!!,” writes Ms. May in response to a Liberal press release announcing Mr. Fullard’s candidacy. “You and Doug together can expose the massive incompetence of Mr. [Jim] Flaherty.”
Elizabeth May was just on CTV playing the sexist card, saying this was a shame for women, and daughters and so on.
However, with her tendency to put her foot in her mouth , perhaps the Consortium has done her a favour.
BTW, 89% of the respondents to my Sept. 1 Lizzy May poll should be happy about this decision.

Wednesday Update: May in! Not necessarily a bad thing. I hope someone asks her where she stands on about abortion.

September 8th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Heh. Harper was exactly right. She supports Dion and we don’t need two Liberal voices there. I’m sure the Liberals supported her inclusion, for obvious reasons.
Now watch her freak out.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
As the CPC said “can’t have two Liberals in the debates”. I would allow her in if she and Dion renounce their pact on running candidates … but hey I find the debates to be a waste of time so will not watch them

Here’s a gem of logic from Lizzy:
The prime minister says May will ultimately endorse the Liberals.
May called that suggestion “nonsense” and accused Harper of being anti-feminist.
Uh-huh.. Pull-eeze.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Actually, I’m sorry she is not going to be in the debates because it will give her a soap-box to play the victim. I also don’t think it’s a good thing that the consortium actually put the blame on the other three parties. Why can’t they just stand up and say she’s a Liberal in camouflage and be done with it ?
I guarantee the Green vote would go down dramatically if Canadians were forced to listen to her for a couple of hours in English and French. And I do mean a couple fo hours of Elizabeth May. this woman even manages to talk through Kinsella !
September 8th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
Jad, yeah. I still think they should consider having three debates. One English, one French and one for pure entertainment.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
The cbc campaign for the Libs continues..now on,the new “Buzz Hargrove” calling for a Danny Williams ABC vote.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
So who gets the CAW leather jacket this time? Jack or Stephane? That’s the kiss of death, don’t you know!
September 8th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
If she’s supportive of the Liberals, she should apply for the head job….there will be a vacancy soon and THEN if she beats Iggy and Rae she’ll get her chance at the podium.
Flaherty’s got to be laughing at the latest.
Since when does May represent the females of the country?
September 8th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
She sure doesn’t represent me!
On MDL now, Lizzy says she’s continuing with her lawsuit and she will be in the debates!
September 8th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
Heh, “three parties” means everyone except Dion said they wouldn’t debate her for the same reason Harper mentioned. Funny how the MSM won’t come out and say it:
“Harper, Layton and Duceppe all refused to debate May. They felt it would be analogous having two liberal candidates; as May has endorsed Dion. Of the party leaders; only Dion was favorable to the idea of debating May.”
That and it’s just wrong to let someone in who has no seat. If they let one seatless party in they will have to let them all in and that is something like 16 parties!
September 8th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
Let May and Dion debate. Didn’t she endore Casey, as being green, sends e-mail to liberal with support. I think what PMSH was talking about is about a week before the election she will pull all her candidates and suggest their supporters vote liberal. She gets way too much air time. Dion just wants her in the debates to translate for him. Her saying she has a green member is crazy. Maybe Garth will become a greenie.
Has Dion come out yet to say he will impletment the Kelona Accord and a lot of other big spending ideas. Where is the money coming from, the contingency fund from the carbon tax. If that tax was to be revenue neutral, why is there 1 billion left to play with, other than send to China and Mo for carbon credits.
As you watch Dion fly around in his dirty plane, remember that is not ghg he is emitting, as he paid someone for the privilege of polluting. Just like Kyoto will do.

Liberals settle Green Shift name dispute
The Liberal Party of Canada will continue to use “Green Shift” under license from Green Shift Inc. …MORE TO FOLLOW….
September 8th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
Good for Jennifer Wight. It proves that the Liberal can bully her no more. Although I’d worry about those rubber cheques.
Interesting how quickly this happened after the mixups of yesterday.
Any idea of how much the Liberals are on the hook for?
September 8th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Paul thanks for the info. All I can find right now is this link at National Newswatch.
Anyone found more info?
September 8th, 2008 at 7:21 pm
Oh boy. Steve Janke’s onto it!
September 8th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
The guy from the broadcast consortium just said that 3 of the other parties refused to participate if May was included, so in order to ensure the debates would go ahead, they are not letting her participate. She is of course now going to sue them, for the third time apparently.
So my question of the day is: “By any chance is she simply trying to scuttle the debates completely to save Dion from embarrassment?” Hidden agenda, anyone ?
September 8th, 2008 at 8:28 pm
Steve’s summary of the Green Shift decision is really good. Interesting that the link in the disclaimer on the Liberal site that has been up for months is now removed.
I’m pretty confident that the “lost in translation” exercise yesterday sped things up.
If I were a Liberal supporter and had given money to them I’d be really, really pissed because what should have been used to help a campaign will be to pay for the stupidity and stubborness of whoever it was who made the decision to continue with the GreenShift and trivialize Jennifer Wright and her company.

Hard to keep up with everything going on.
Does anyone else think it’s strange that Dion just announced his ‘hearing problem’ today?
Iggy said he wasn’t aware of it!
September 8th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Dion’s hearing problem. I think in raising this now it gets the media and his opponents off his case for his poor grasp of the English language.
It also might suggest to everybody that to talk about Dion’s poor grasp of English equates to making fun of a personal affliction of which he has no control.
Then there’s the sympathy vote.
On a different topic, I watched MDL tonight and I remembered why I detest Gerard Kennedy. Even with his grasp of English he’s a horrible speaker and he talks over people. Why isn’t the Libeal party mad at him seeing as though when Dion won the leadership Kennedy was credited with the coup? I hope Kennedy loses!
September 8th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
So if Dion has a hearing problem would he not have trouble hearing questions in English OR French?
Sheesh, that spin is so pathetic it’s not even funny.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
So if Dion has a hearing problem would he not have trouble hearing questions in English OR French?
That’s what I was thinking.
The whole thing smacks of desperation.
September 8th, 2008 at 10:32 pm
Re: Dion’s claimed hearing problem:
I’m sorry; I find this extremely difficult to believe for the following reasons:
1. If this were true we would have found out long before now: Dion’s English has long been a discussion topic and it would be logical and politically expedient to have given this explanation a year ago. Saying it now makes it seem like he is trying to gain sympathy.
2. If he had a medical condition, he would know its name.
3. People with hearing problems almost have an accent; a “fuzziness” or lack of sharpness in their speech. I do not hear this with Mr. Dion.
4. Dion is not the only one who speaks English in this manner. Maxime Bernier; for example; speaks English poorly in a manner almost identical to Mr. Dion. I find them both almost impossible to understand. To the best of my knowledge Bernier has no hearing problem.
5. There has never been any complaint about Dion’s command of French. If he had a hearing problem he would have speech difficulties in any language.
Finally; hypothetically supposing this is true it doesn’t change the problem: To be Prime Minister you must be able to effectively communicate in both languages.
September 8th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
May, you’ve made some pretty compelling arguments.
I raised the following point over at Stephen Taylor’s:
What I found strange, though, is Dion saying that “His understanding of English, he says, is better than his “delivery.”
Umm, if he has a hearing problem, how can he claim his “understanding” (aural i.e hearing) is better than his “delivery” (oral i.e. speaking)? A bit contradictory, n’est-ce pas?
September 8th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
Regarding the consortium’s refusal to allow Elizabeth May to participate in the national televised debates it was reported on a number of political programs today that one of the three parties against her participation threatened to withdraw completely from the debate if she were allowed while the other two parties made no such threats.
The consortium spokesman who was on MDL refused to give anymore information but gleeful fingers are already pointing at the Conservatives as being the party in question.
Duff suggested that the consortium invite May anyway and keep the abstaining political party seat vacant through the debate.
Does anyone know which party made the threat?
I sincerely hope it wasn’t the Conservatives.

” … one of the three parties against her participation threatened to withdraw completely from the debate …”
It could be just unfounded rumours.
What IS strange, though, is the fact that the English debate is taking place on Oct. 2, the same night as the American VP candidates’ debates.
That means that a large part of the English audience will perhaps tune into the American debate rather than the Canadian one.
September 9th, 2008 at 12:32 am
Did T-Jack pick up on this? Maybe he can capitalize on Lizzie and Dion’s courtship.
September 9th, 2008 at 12:33 am
Elizabeth May is painful to watch, she’s too emotional and screechy. It really annoys me when someone doesn’t get what they want, then say it’s a blow to women. It’s not a blow to me at all it’s just the way it goes. I resent being used as a political tool by people who fail and then try to lay guilt trips.
You don’t hear men say ‘Oh, I didn’t get that, so it’s an insult to all men and masculinism’ do you? It’s ridiculous.
I think they should have a debate with the Greens, the CHP and the rest of the fringe parties who suck votes at election time. Put them all on together, let them debate each other on the ‘issues’.
I don’t know why the Greens would be aligning with the Liberals anyway, since the Greens are a right-wing party but maybe they want to keep that secret from the voters a little longer.
September 9th, 2008 at 1:16 am
So it turns out that Layton was the leader who said he wouldn’t participate in the debates if May was allowed in, if the info. here is correct:
http://www.abandonedstuff.com/2008/09/08/yellowpartie/
And this (from a link in source above):
“NDP campaign spokesman Brad Lavigne confirmed that Leader Jack Layton had refused to attend with May present.”

Wow! Good sleuthing, Gabby! Way to go.
September 9th, 2008 at 7:49 am
May, many of your thoughts regarding Dion’s newly-disclosed ‘disability’ mirror my own.
I may refer to them for a future post. Thanks.
September 9th, 2008 at 8:40 am
“Wow! Good sleuthing, Gabby! Way to go.”
Thanks, Joanne, but I can’t really take the credit. I got there by following links from the BT, to the blog Freedom is My Nationality, where commenter Saskboy linked to an article on his site, which linked to the CTV article.
blush* I was just too lazy/tired to backtrack and list all the links yesterday *blush
And in my haste I failed to mention the reason for posting that information: to dispel the accusations levelled at Mr. Harper, even by CTV’s Graham Richardson, that the leader threatening to pull out of the debates was the PM.
September 9th, 2008 at 8:41 am
Oops! I see an errant “to” in my previous post …
September 9th, 2008 at 8:42 am
…to dispel the accusations levelled at Mr. Harper, even by CTV’s Graham Richardson, that the leader threatening to pull out of the debates was the PM.
Right. CTV sure had me fooled. Thanks again for setting the record straight.
September 9th, 2008 at 8:43 am
I got rid of it for you, Gabby.
September 9th, 2008 at 9:03 am
I suffer from hearing loss as a result of a noisy work enviroment and years of playing in a band standing in front of my amplifier.
But my hearing loss is different than Dion’s in that I have trouble hearing all languages, not just english. It also has no effect on my speaking and ability to put coherent sentences together.
Perhaps we should come up with a name for Dion’s apparent selective hearing problem. I’ll start.
English LiberInteruptis- a hearing problem that affects ones ability to hear and speak(properly) the english language. Scientists are at a loss to exolain why those afflicted can still hear and speak french.
September 9th, 2008 at 9:09 am
According to Bob Fife…and he was almost breathless with anticipation…PMSH about to make BIG,really good news announcement in Wpg.shortly! Nice to see the cbc/ctv pushing the Dion ‘makeover’ this am.
September 9th, 2008 at 9:19 am
As for the Red/Green coalition, check out Cherniak’s blog this am…he has a campaign ad for Lib MP Wilfert, with a CLEAR endorsement from none other than Lizzie May! The only comment up so far, says, that Jason has just proved PMSH’s point! Wonder how long that will stay up?
September 9th, 2008 at 9:23 am
[...] May has a great summary of her thoughts on the subject from the previous post: May Says: September 8th, 2008 at 10:32 [...]

Gabby,
Thanks for the sleuthing.
You guys are good.
Lets hope that the media ’sleuths’ who blamed Harper will correct themselves. Refusing to participate in the debate if May is present is way beyond childish.

“Lets hope that the media ’sleuths’ who blamed Harper will correct themselves.”
Faint hope of that happening.
This am, my local talk show host, who is conservative/libertarian, introduced his first topic by saying it was Harper who had threatened to pull out. The others on his panel followed suit, accusing Harper of being anti-democratic. So, the accusation is being spread, and most callers were “outraged.”
Well, at least some voters cannot be bamboozled.
“Now is the time for all good men (and women) to come to the aid of the (Conservative) party”*

Liberal website to portray Dion’s rugged side
Updated Tue. Sep. 9 2008 10:13 AM ET
CTV.ca News Staff
I seldom comment on the CTV site, but this am an article caught my attention, so I quoted from the article that spoke of “the *normally* private Harper” to underscore my point.
When I returned to the site to see if my comment had been accepted, the article had changed, and of course the “normally private Harper” reference had been withdrawn.
Unfortunately, I did not copy the original article.
Now, maybe the CTV staff who “updated” the original article had no agenda of their own, but … why not simply add new incoming information, instead of deleting previous segments of that article?
