Jennifer Wright should be ecstatic…

…that Stephane Dion mentioned her company’s website in his kickoff speech to the Federal election campaign, right? National exposure after all… [sarc off]

For future reference, it’s THE Green Shift for you Mr. Bean, and Green Shift for the company who’s owner is filing for an injunction against your party .

And that’s the last bit of help I’m giving you.

Gaffe #1 and counting.

(Please see Monday update at end)

(Oh, o.k. just one more hint. Don’t accuse the Government of "sitting on their hands". That one could come back to haunt you.)

O.K. Just one more. It’s "Richer, fairer, Greener ", not "Richer, fairer, richer ".

Didn’t you check the script, Stephane?

Update: Please check out Angelo Persichilli - Best to bomb the other party’s weakest link (Star).

And via Wilson’s comment at Christian Conservative, we have this juicy tidbit - Note on the new Liberal website, the name being used now
” The Liberal Green Shift” .

Will Jennifer Wright be o.k. with this further revision of the Green Shift? Stay tuned…

Monday Update: Well, it seems that the CTV translator made a mistake and it has now been corrected. Mr. Dion did actually say "The Green Shift", but it was translated as Green Shift.  However, CTV has now changed their web page to reflect the correct translation.

Which all goes to show that you can’t always trust MSM, and neither should bloggers.

I just finished reviewing the beginning of yesterday’s ‘Question Period’, which I had fortunately recorded. Lloyd Robertson and Lisa LaFlamme clearly chastize Dion for saying "Green Shift", and Lisa calls it the first gaffe of the Liberal Party in this campaign. Strange that that segment is not available on the CTV website…

BIG UPDATE: LIBERALS HAVE A NEW WRIT EXPENSE: PAYING FOR ‘GREEN SHIFT’ - Steve janke

  1. I’d be careful about jumping on this story too soon. As I posted at Sandy’s, the gaffe was said by the english translator. And without confirming what Dion said in french we can’t be certain it wasn’t just an error by the translator.

  2. I remember when the libs where shouting this lady down saying she should shut-up and enjoy the free advertising…………………boy where they wrong. Many of us challenged them on that, saying it could be potentially disastrous. We are seeing how the liberals are allready avoiding talking about the green shift, not because Mrs./Ms. Wright asked, but because the plan ISNT FLYING!!!

  3. Reid, good point, but then Lloyd Robertson would also be wrong.

  4. Reid - It was said by Dion. See the clip at:

    http://watch.ctv.ca/news/latest/liberals-vision/#clip90400

    sounds like Dion to me.

  5. p.s. - it’s also in print at CTV’s website. Dion actually says “Go see GreenShift.ca……..”

    Joanne’s got it right.

  6. Thanks, Sol. I was going through clips trying to find it, but I got sidetracked by a special edition of MDL on right now, and Dion’s latest speech in Montreal.

  7. Just as a side note, I can’t stand the Interpreter the CTV uses. I get sea sick listening to him.

Well, I just heard Sheila Copps on MDL tell Tim Powers to go onto - wait for it……..greenshift.ca! Yikes can none of them get it right???

  9. ok….Sheila Copps just made the same mistake that Dion did…she invited folks to go to Jennifer Wright’s website GreenShift.ca

I think the Liberal strategists better nix and/or review the talking points with their team sooner rather than later.

  10. Alberta Girl, can you please post the link to Mike Duffy live? I always have problems accessing it at the ctv.ca website.

  11. Yikes. They have got big problems if they keep making that mistake. And it really strengthens Jennifer Wright’s case.

  12. If Dion and co. make mistakes like this, how do voters feel they’ll do if Dion’s elected to manage the country?

That’s the question of the hour in my opinion. I wonder who will ask it though.

I think this is going to be a long September.

  13. Sol:

You’re wrong actually. The website is mentioned twice in that clip. Once at 4:58 and it’s the translator that says “greenshift.ca” and again at 5:25 where Dion says “thegreenshift.ca.”

I’m not in the habit of defending Liberals. But you are just plain wrong on this one.

I video captured this clip early as I was going to blog on it. I have reviewed this clip several times. You are wrong.

Babylonian - I happened to catch it while flipping channels on TV. You can try this.

The fact is that if there is this much confusion over the name, you would think the Liberals would just admit it.

My question is why are reporters not calling them out on it when they get it wrong…..oh, never mind, I know why!

  16. Joanne, you’re darned influential. I think we need you to start the important “impeach John Tory” movement.

If not for you, he’ll run again (for some seat, somewhere) and lose.

Why can’t he convince someone to give him a seat?

  17. Reid - If I’m wrong then so too is CTV, Lloyd Robertson, and now Copps on MDL.

  18. Oh man..if Dion’s first campaign speech(in a very safe Lib riding) is any indication of what is to come, this could be a circus! That was just plain horrible! And for roger Smith at ctv,to already have given the ‘tour’ a nickname of Tortoise and Hare..with guess who being the turtle, and saying tort.could be ‘roadkill’ under the big blue bus..you just know things are off to a rocky start!
Please excuse sp.mistakes, just had surgery, and am having to peck away with one hand, but hey,I get to recuperate and stay home for all the election lead up! Planned that well didn’t I???

  19. Sol, what Copps said has nothing to do with what Dion said. She was not quoting him. Yes, Copps gave the wrong website. And yes there is confusion about the website lending credence to Jennifer Wright’s lawsuit. No Dion did not say the wrong website. CTV, Lloyd, and you are wrong. Sorry.

There will be plenty of Dion gaffes. We do not do ourselves a service by claiming gaffes that didn’t happen.

  20. I do not speak French and rely on what was translated as being Dion’s words.

I did view the clip that you posted a link to on Crux, and concede that it was the translator’s voice, but, as you say we have no way of knowing whether he(the translator) made the error or whether Dion actually said what the translator said he said.

It would also seem that CTV their print version attribute the quote to Dion “Go see GreenShift.ca and see what it represents for your famlily,” Dion said.

Robertson made the error, as will others I’m sure.
    Copps being one more.

I’d really like to know if there’s anyone who can tell us if, in French Dion misspoke the url? Anyone?

  21. hahahahhahahahahahahahaha !

This Green Shift thing is going to blow up in their faces this campaign

  22. I video captured this clip early as I was going to blog on it. I have reviewed this clip several times. You are wrong.

Reid, do a post on this, please. I’d love to see it.

  23. Joanne, you’re darned influential. I think we need you to start the important “impeach John Tory” movement.

If not for you, he’ll run again (for some seat, somewhere) and lose.

Why can’t he convince someone to give him a seat?

Moebius, first of all you overestimate my influence. But thanks. ;)

I am not doing anything pro or against John Tory. The reason is that if he hangs on til the next election, I don’t want to give any Liblogger fodder to fire against him/Ontario Conservatives.

But I think that the fact that he can’t entice a single caucus member to give up their seat should speak for itself.

  24. I am not doing anything pro or against John Tory. The reason is that if he hangs on til the next election, I don’t want to give any Liblogger fodder to fire against him/Ontario Conservatives.

OK, but they already have all the ammunition they need, and several natural supporters, like myself, who are anti-Tory.

But I think that the fact that he can’t entice a single caucus member to give up their seat should speak for itself.

We are the party, and have the grass-roots power and influence to make changes! If not, then what is the point of an Ontario Conservative Party? Tory is our Dion, the leader who wouldn’t leave. The difference is, Dion is out of time, and we have several years to rebuild with a new leader.

  25. FYI, brand new MDL on right now!

  26. O.K. I take back everything I ever said about Craig Oliver. He just said something very favourable about PMSH (new poll coming out tomorrow in La Presse).

  27. In a similar vein as Angelo Persichilli’s column, but more disquieting:

September 6, 2008 post entitled “The lifespan of lies”

  28. Wow, Gabby. That’s just scary. Let’s hope that Dion’s claim that he is taking the high road is true.

On another note, I listened carefully to his presser, and he did indeed say “THE Green Shift”, in clear anglais.

  29. Yep. At the 5:28 mark he did say “THE”Green Shift, but earlier on the translator didn’t. I didn’t catch the correct url and neither did CTV.

My apologies to Mr. Dion, however, it was clearly lost in translation for me.

Sheila Copps did make the error though.

    Joanne,
You are going to love this; feminists at Canadian Cynic blog attacked Harper for his reluctance in defining Dion as a family man.

And we’re off to a glorious start.

Never let it be said that Big Daddy can’t (or won’t) take the high road when the option is presented to him.

Asked whether he saw his chief rival as a family man, he said: “I don’t know Stephane Dion all that well. I presume that he’s been married a long time, has children. I presume he’s a family man also.”

Dion has a wife and daughter.

Stay classy, Big Daddy — stay classy.

    =====================================================

Feminists do not seem to be very well informed on family life of their glorious leader.

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/liberals/dion.html

    Here is relevant quote,

“Stéphane himself does not appear to be particularly religious. He only married his wife, political scientist Janine Krieber, so they could adopt a daughter, Jeanne, from Catholic Peru in 1988. Before that the two had lived together, like so many Quebecers of their generation, for almost 10 years — from when they were students at Laval,..”

  31. Reid, you were right. Sorry to doubt you.

It’s also a lesson not to rely on MSM translators for information. I guess CTV owes Mr. Dion an apology.

  32. My favorite comment of the day, from the G&M article on Dion’s plane: it’s good to know that Dion’s plane is equipped to land on gravel, for when the campaign hits the skids!

  33. Sammy, thanks for that! Hilarious!!
