As Don Martin so eloquently notes , Stephane Dion assisted the Conservatives in passing many substantive bills, and was also instrumental in helping this minority government attain the distinction of "having just beaten the record to become the longest minority reign since the election of 1921."
Dion’s amazing ability to decide when Canadians would not want an election has generated the following Harper accomplishments:

Cocky Dion is now challenging Stephen Harper to a televised debate.
Now this is the kind of thing one usually does during an election campaign. However, since Stephane doesn’t seem to want Canadians apparently don’t want an election during any season, this seems rather strange. Who would watch? Who would care?
If Canadians don’t want an election, why would they waste their time indoors watching a debate?
Maybe the Wizard should have concentrated on refining Stephane’s brain instead. He seems to lack a certain je ne sais quoi. Of course in the original story, the Lion and the Straw Man learned that they already had what they were seeking all along.

Dion had plenty of opportunity to debate the issue of the environment before he hypocritically betrayed his environmental base and caved because he was frightened of the prospect of an election that he knew he and his party would lose. Now that he is trying his last gasp attempt at life support for his ailing leadership, he wants to be the one to set the agenda? I don’t think so, Dion. You had a lot of opportunities to do just that on this issue and many others – and you failed, time and again.
Piss off Dion. You want a debate on your pathetic little tax scheme? Then grow a pair and have the courage to do so during a leadership debate during an election campaign so the people can finally judge for themselves. Nothing to enable us to purchase and install new and green technology. Nothing for factories to actually reduce emissions or pollution. Nothing going to enabling personal reduction. This plan is just a tax scheme. All this plan will do is increase prices for everyone. Thats it. Without those emissions, there is nothing to base his new tax scheme revenue on. No wonder Dion isn’t serious about actual reductions. If he were, he wouldn’t have anything to tax in order to bring in revenue for his Liberal spending.

Perhap’s Dion should be asked to explain the fact natural gas rates are about to skyrocket, roughly $268 per year for the average person heating their home. That increase is before he throws on his green shaft tax. Seniors and low-income earners, be afraid, be very afraid.
Sammy, that lib blogger is right. Dion is like Obama. Just like Obama mislead Americans knowingly about his stance on Nafta and it’s effects on them if he is elected, so too is Dion misleading Canadians about what would really happen under his plan.
I truly believe Joanne it is time to start asking questions of all the LPC MP’s and candidates in the Party until we get some answers on questions they do not want to talk about.
Here are three for examples.
One, What is the GHG reduction goal at the end of the First, Second, Third and Fourth year of this program.
Second, What are the projected administration costs of this program (normally thirty percent) and if so how will these costs be paid if all monies raised will be returned either thru tax cuts or increases to rebates and fully refunded tax credits to the lower income.
Third, If the intent is to move the 4B annually from the excess tax on gasoline which presently flows into General Revenue, into this program which from my rough math they will have to do to reach the 15B number, how will they make up that 16B shortfall in funding to other programs or will they be willing to run a deficit to accomplish this program.
I have asked these same questions to Garth on his site, and received the reply “read the plan” which I have twice, the answers are not there. I want answers.
I will be emailing these questions to My MP today as well as Mr.Dion. I encourage all to read the plan and critic it not on political partisanship but rather on what it says and or lack of clarity.
‘Canada’s Obama’? Hmmmm. If they mean a stuffed suit with no actual policies then yes, Stephane Obama he is.
P.S. Garth has responded to one of the questions saying the Excess tax is not included as revenue in the LPC plan and will remain in General Revenue, back to the white board to do some more math, to see how that changes things.

Then we get Sandi Renaldo asking ” Why is this plan getting under Mr Harpers “SKIN”? Not Prime Minister Harper of course…I noticed.
Craigs answer: Because it’s “MORE” than a green plan- social engineering-broad based National policy-economics-income redistribution. Things Harper hates. He regards it as a TRUDEAU like imposition…bla bla bla.

I agree with Gayle on this and actually I have no doubt there are people ripping it asunder as we speak, I think the crazy and screwed comments were just to place more emphases on the opposition to the plan to ensure the two sides were clearly on polar opposite sides of the spectrum on this. I would expect a serious rebuttal next week with a host of experts making their opinions known. As a personal question to Gayle, have you read the plan from cover to cover, I have just finished my fourth reading, and each time I have more and more questions, i.e. all the costing for revenue neutral aspects are shown in the forth year, what are the income tax cuts in the first thru third, yes I understand that that is the accumulative cut but are we to just suck it up the first three. See what I mean, if you read the document as you would when your fisking a blog post, it really is incomplete.
What I find particularly galling about the entire issue is that Dion is willing to wreck the Canadian economy based on some feeble IPCC climate model that has already been shown to be completely wrong , and the MSM just go along with the BS, assuming the IPCC model is correct !

PMSH was speaking to Canadians, in a language that all would understand. He is a brillant man, as shown by his performances when overseas. I am confidant he will rip this plan to shreds, when he is not busy working for the well being of the country. After all he is the PRIME MINISTER and a lot of responsibilities that go with the job. He will deal with Dion when the time is appropriate,have no fear.

Gayle is right to say they need to do more to counter. And they are. They are crunching the numbers, including all the social spending promises, and will show that in fact Dion is increasing taxes in excess of $6 billion. This six billion is the costing of supplements, rebates,social spending, etc. Conservative’s are also having the numbers looked over by respected economists and those in the business community. This will give validity to their claims its a tax grab. Dion will be forced to say which taxpayers are footing the bill(i.e. middle class).
Dion’s insistance it’s revenue-neutral is a croc. The tax will generate billions in additional taxes above the tax cuts promised. And the tax savings calculator on the Liberal website only tells you the tax reduction. It does not factor in increased costs to fuel, food, heating, electricity, etc, not to mention the toll it will take on the manufacturing sector.
Anyone notice the media has really let this plan fall off the radar quickly for such a big plan? My sister and her husband in B.C. tell me Dion’s plan is being ripped apart there, along with Campbell’s new carbon tax taking effect July 1st. My in-laws in Newfoundland figure Dion just handed back the Atlantic provinces to Harper. Premier Danny-Boy is keeping a tight lip for now, but word is he is not to happy, after just finallizing contracts for investment in the provinces oil industry.And does Dion realize how much of Nova Scotia’s electricity is from coal?

Paul – there is no doubt Harper will find economists who agree with him, as Dion has already done. This is no different from every election. As for who is going to pay, I do not think that is hidden at all. The plan does not pretend that everyone will get an equal refund. Clearly the wealthier you are, the more it will cost you.

Further to those words used by PMSH, do the media and dion think that by attacking those words they can sell the plan. All they are doing is giving cdns the opportunity to see PMSH saying over and over this is a crazy plan, and will screw all of Canada, not just AB like the NEP did.

I can’t help but notice how quickly the Shaft was deep sixed by the MSM. It was on CBC Newsworld on the day it was announced but was never mentioned on CBC 2 the next morning. That’s exactly what I was saying Joe. Aside from some editorials and Duffy and Newman(they are politics shows), the msm seems to think that it was a one day news story. Not sure if that’s because of public sentiment or what. I do know that most media polls were about 65% against paying a carbon tax in return for a tax cut.
And Gayle, the Liberal’s are trying to portray the tax as being tax neutral to everyone. Dion even refuses to aknowledge that plan will add 2.5 cents a litre per year on gas, even though those who drew up the plan have stated as much.
So for Stephane Dion, if you want an adult debate, start by telling us:
1. What your plan is estimated to do to the price of gas( I know, I know, you are not taxing it. The trickle down effect)?
2. What is the expected increase in the rate of inflation as a result of this plan?
3. We know you expect 15$ billion in tax revenues. How many billions will be given in tax cuts?
4. Exactly what reduction in ghg emissions dou you expect in each of the four years?
5. What tariff rate will be applied to imported goods from non-carbon tax countries(China for example), and how will this affect the prices we pay in Canada?
6. Which taxpayers can expect to see an increase in their taxes, and by how much?
Lets see if I got this right.
The plan was released on Thursday. It is now Sunday, only 3 days later, and yet people are screaming because the conservatives have not studied, formulated a complete reply/counter, and presented it to the public yet? Wow.
Now Dion wants to dictate to the PM what he should be doing with his valuable time by demanding a precedent setting debate, not on a government policy, but on an opposition plan. Give me a break.

(Mary T 12:21) I watched the Craig O. and Dion CTV-QP chat and I can share a few impressions: Craig wasn’t being overly gentle, and I sensed a bit of incredulity and skepticism. Dion evaded answering to specific questions put to him and he did the usual scripted, “Canadians are bigger than that, and they want to save the world from the greatest threat… climate change…” Well, you know the script.
Perhaps the architects of this hare-brained greenshift scam are ‘evil geniuses’ intent on “soaking the west-regions,” but the impression I had from watching Dion speaking today is that he truly believes in this plan and believes that it will magically correct various omnibus environmental and wealth redistribution concerns. He seems isolated and insulated from the reality many of the rest of us exist in. There’s intellect there, but there seems to be some disconnect regarding what is pragmatic.
Later in the program, John Manley (former Lib-MP/Cabinet) spoke. What a contrast!
CTV QP was a joke today. All feel good Dion stuff. Oliver looked uncomfortable when Manly refused to trash PMSH although Oliver tried his best to encourage same. The Comments at the end of the show by the media “expert” were so pro lib/dion, it was sickening…

Craig tried desperately to get Manley to say something against PMSH. He didn’t. He said he had no complaints …and the PM handled the prison break quite well. We must be “FACTUAL” not “NEGATIVE”. On Emmerson…He is thoughtful and knowledgable…a good image for Canada.

Just watched the clips. What is Craigs problem other than he knows that after years (from PET on) all that ass polishing will not get him into the senate. Best of QP today is that an NDP guy has family living in AB, but did he fly out to Edmonton on his own dime, or will he do something political to get the taxpayer to pay for it.

Can you imagine a debate on QP between dion and our PM. Craig and giggles would not allow one answer from PMSH, or even ask a relevant question. But, they would fawn all over Dion. How many have noticed that when Dion is speaking to a crowd, or even in the HofC, he pauses, gets a smirk, and his expression says, I just said something important, clap and cheer for me. Watch for it, even today on QP he seemed to be waiting for a great job response from Craig before continuing.

How about a hypothetical debate, with Dave asking Dion questions. The leaders debate coming during the election scares me,unless they change the format, and questioners are from the audience, selected on a first come first seated basis.

People have been busy today, as my e-mail in box can tell. I delete everything at around 11.00 p.m., so far today 112 responses from blogs, and of course one does not get responses from all blogs. Most of them are shafting the shaft plan, so Dion, regardless of what Oliver and pals are telling you, it is not being well received.

Watched Goldhawk tonight with guests…Jim Travisty, Gloria Gallaway, and Iverson. The question was if you thought the govt. did a good job this session?
Goldhawk took his usual pile of calls from Ontario, BUT all callers were positive and thought PMSH did an “EXCELLENT” job, except one caller from BC (who sounded like he had one two many joints) and one man from WPG. said he voted LIBERAL all his life after Defenbaker and would not vote for DION. He will vote Conservative most likely, this time around.
One caller actually said the panel was the problem for the govt…something to that effect.
Another said the scandals were BULL…and on & on. Of course Goldhawk cut most of them off. More yaking with his guests, than call ins. The carbon tax was brought up also and put down quickly by another caller.
Seems the Govt. got a high grade by real Canadians tonight.

PMSH should hold televised town halls.
Let Peter Mansbridge do the moderating.
Let Canadians ask the questions (in person or via video), they will be tougher and less partisan than Oliver or Rutherford anyday.
The Dippers should NOT be left out of an evironmental debate.
Dippers were on the enviro file before Dion was even appointed by Chretien.
Why should the PM ever debate a brain cramp of the opposition leader at the opposition leader’s request? Dion does not dictate to PMSH. If Dion wants a debate let him put it on the order paper. Oh right as opposition he doesn’t control the order paper.

Agree Ontario Girl!!All but one caller tonight on Goldhawk live thought steven Harper Conservative Government are doing good job. Goldhawk tried to cut them off and James Traverse ran down Stephen Harper every chance he got.
I was reassured that so many Canadians took the time to phone in with positive comments.
The Liberal commercial reminds me of that old K-Tel commercial for The Clapper, with the old lady lying in bed and then clapping to turn the lights out.
Which when you think about it makes sense, as Dion’s plan should pretty much turn the lights off the Liberal’s for a long time.

Re Nanos, isn’t it strange when polls are taken and results published, they show a great difference from on line polls.
eg, g&m has a poll, who would make the best Pres for Canada, McCain 51%, Obama 49%. Close, but certainly what we are told daily in the media re cdns prefer Obama. Same question at Calgary Sun, 68% for McCain.
Maybe with Newman gone for the summer the spin will really stop.
