Of hair salons and politics

Jane Taber and Daniel Leblance dish the dirt about the Bernier leak - Salon gossip led to downfall of Bernier:

…The source said yesterday that it was through "typical hair-salon chatter" that Mr. Duceppe’s hairdresser unwittingly revealed the connections between Ms. Couillard and the Hells Angels biker gang. But while word was all over the salon, there has been no indication that the RCMP or CSIS raised red flags about Ms. Couillard’s past relationships.

Although Mr. Duceppe said yesterday he will not "reveal my sources" - noting that he does not ask reporters to do so - he confirmed he has been going to the salon for a number of years.

It is clear, too, that Mr. Duceppe has been pushing for months for the story of Ms. Couillard’s motorcycle-gang connections to come out, having long had a feeling that it could grow into something much bigger than a cabinet minister’s dating life…

Obviously, Duceppe was hoping that the hint of scandal would help his political fortunes and discredit federalism in the process. And it seems that MSM was only to happy to comply.

Personally, all I see happening here with this tidbit of information is that it only enhances the tabloid aspect of this story. Even reporters on MDL have been saying that there isn’t a whole lot left to exploit here, other than the fact that Canadians still need to be reassurred that some government department is overseeing security issues.

I don’t see this whole matter as some kind of negligence on the part of the PM who has a lot better things to do than worry about who his Ministers are dating. Someone in the goverment bureacracy obviously didn’t do his or her job if indeed Ms. Couillard’s past relationships were cause for concern. Also, there is that strange time lag where the so-called senstive documents were at her home with no red flag raised.

Why not? Was it a plan by liberal-friendly Foreigns Affairs bureaucrats to turn a blind eye to Bernier’s forgetfulness in hopes of entrapping him in a faux-pas?

These are questions that demand answers.

Then let’s try to put the whole affair to bed.

* * * *

Thursday Update : Not known if Bernier’s Documents Returned (Star):

The foreign affairs department does not know whether all the classified government documents Maxime Bernier had access to have been returned following a security breach that ended his cabinet career, an official told the Star…

…The system of departmental checks intended to track classified government material is also up for review…

Duh!

In addition to the questions you ask, Joanne, there’s a couple more.
    • Who set up the initial meeting between Ms. Couillard* and Mr. Bernier?
I have heard or read that she happened to be attending an event where the minister was slated to speak, and she ended up at his table. How did she manage that?

    • If the Bloc and perhaps even the Liberals were aware of Ms. Couillard’s shady past, and they were as worried about national security as they claim to be, why did they NOT inform someone in government, like the PMO, or even the RCMP?
This is the same question that arises with NDPer Dawn Black. She recently alleged (it was even mentioned in QP either Monday or Tuesday by Jack Layton) that Mr. Bernier had exposed documents on a commercial flight which both Ms. Black and Mr. Bernier were on.
This supposedly happened SIX MONTHS ago!
Rather than telling the minister at that time that his documents were visible to others, as Ms. Black claimed, she let it go, but brought it up now that she can use it for political advantage.

    * Finally, I wish someone would inform pundits who relish talking about Ms. Couillard that her name is NOT pronounced “Coo-lard” but rather “Coo-yard).

    PS.
Since this thread involves gossip … according to Susan Delacourt, the PM has lost 40 pounds.

  3. So far there has been no evidence that the files were missing or returned, other than sayso. No video or written reports of them being returned. No employee of F.A. that he/she got them back, or that they were actually missing. Could have been “misplaced” by liberal supporter. And, if these files contained such secret information, why are the opposition demanding to know what was/is in them. Will those responsible for keeping track of files be called at the kangaroo court. Maybe Max resigned because he knew of the smear that would be thrown at him. Maybe the gal just said she had these files. After all, a woman scorned is vicious.
The only thing keeping this alive are a bunch of jealous female reporters with no cleavage and a bunch of envious males.
Wonder how many of their wives, mistresses, girlfriends/boyfriends could stand an investigation into their past without a little scandal coming out.
It was hinted weeks ago that Duceppe was behind all this and it seems he was. He must be desperate and afraid of PMSH.

  4. Huge breaking news…Jason Kenney on cbc for press conference.Forensic audits PROVE that the infamous PMSH tape in the Cadmangate affair WAS doctored.Slams the Libs, for false allegations. Two of the top audiotape experts in US CONFIRM this! One scandal goin’ down!!!!

Ms. Couillard’s credibility is somewhat suspect, given that she said she was a Real Estate agent, but the company she supposedly worked for denied she ever did work for them.

When the committee hearings start, I will be curious to see how the Tory members handle her. My guess is that they will use the short question and answer format that Russ Hebert used during the Mulroney/Schrieber hearings.

I’d like to see Cheryl Gallant doing ALL the questioning for our side. She was good with Linda Keen.

  6. Breaking news. Press conference at conservative headquarters re the Cadman. Proof positive that the tape of interview with PMSH was DOCTORED in more than one place. Forenic evidence proves this. Liberals and media have used a doctored tape to smear PMSH.
If they did it with this one, how about that other one offering a conservative a bribe to cross the floor.

  7. BREAKING NEWS…The Cadman Smear…James Moore just held a press conference on CBC. The tape of PMSH was examined by two EXPERTS and it was DOCTERED!!!!!! He was taking questions from reporters but of course CBC cut off his news conference. CTV isn’t reporting a thing about it YET either.

  8. Wow. I go out to the gym and all h*ll breaks loose! Thanks for the tip, folks. New post up, which I’ll update later.

  9. Gossip mongering is the source of a lot of political scandal… real or perceived. The fact that the MSM types did not take to this at first seems to be a good indication that there may actually be SOME form of professionalism left out there.

Here’s a question for all the pundits … If you read about the politicians in some time pot socialist demanding and getting security services to investigate the girlfriends of politicians would you:

    a) Shake your head and say what next?
    b) Congratulate the investigators on their diligence?
    c) Say … wow just like here in Canada?

Another analogy is to relate the mindset of the former USSR and the Soviet KGB in their pursuit of control over everything and everyone.

Harper is absolutely right to draw the line at having CSIS investigate people because they happen to have a relationship with a politician or government official.

Bernier’s mistake is on his shoulders alone.

  10. QP should be interesting today, bet no questions re this tape comes up from the opposition, but it will be mentioned somehow in an answer.
This has got to help in the court case.
With this coming out, proving liberals and others used a phoney tape, wont be difficult to suggest the smear re Bernier is a set up also.

  11. Should always spell check ..
Here’s a question for all the pundits … If you read about the politicians in some tin pot socialist republic demanding and getting security services to investigate the girlfriends of politicians would you:

    a) Shake your head and say what next?
    b) Congratulate the investigators on their diligence?
    c) Say … wow just like here in Canada?

  12. Doctored tape? Just highlights Dryden’s complete lack of judgment. Pure buffoonery to go on day after day without evidence that the tape he kept quoting was authentic.

Dryden, do the right thing. Apologize and announce you are retiring from politics as soon as your campaign debts have been satisfied. On second thought that could take 10 years at the rate you are going. Just retire.

  13. When can Canadians expect Mark Holland and Marlene Jennings to make a dramatic entrance into the House of Commons dragging a mattress (bugged?) followed by members of MSM beaming and salivating, under the glow of CBC television lights?

Monty Python’s Flying Circus is in serious danger of being displaced by the Liberal Opposition Party, as a showcase of the absurd and bizarre, with their Inspector Clouseau antics of fabricated scandal, to gain the limelight and their propensity to step in cowpies, while abrogating their parliamentary function as the Official Opposition.

  14. Next thing we will hear is that the documents were never missing in the first place, just “misplaced” by a liberal staffer, so Duceppe could have his scandal.
PMSH should use this respite from an election to clear out all those civil servants that have done nothing but work with the liberals to undermine the govt. If Dion should bring down the govt, so what, those guys/gals would be gone.
Hey, the Sec of Defence just fired a couple of high ranking officers in the Air Force, in the US, for mismanagement, so why can’t PMSH fire a bunch of hangerson, waiting to get back at the trough.
