Liberals can be ‘control freaks’ too

PM Stephen Harper has often been vilified by the press for his so-called iron-fisted grasp on his caucus. However, I have discovered evidence that even the genial Dalton McGuinty is not the easiest leader to get along with.

Pity poor Environment Minister John Gerretsen when he had to sweat through a photo op where he heard his boss say something totally not in the plan , and yet he got blasted anyway for not calling him out in public.

Yes, indeed. John Gerretsen was blamed for being - wait for it - unduly deferential! . Next time he’s supposed to contradict McGuinty if the Premier makes a mistake in public. Can you imagine such a scene?

"Well, actually, the Premier just misspoke, er, made a mistake, um I mean, didn’t read the script. O.K. He SCREWED UP, ALRIGHT???" - Nah, I can’t quite see it happening either.

Talk about a no-win situation.

Oh, and did you know that McGuinty’s a loner?

"He is not an easy guy to know," said one minister, stressing McGuinty keeps his own counsel and is not particularly close to anyone in cabinet.

And you thought only Conservative Prime Ministers were like that.

And then this juicy tidbit is disclosed:

Another Liberal points his index finger to his foot and says "pow" as he refers to the current Lord’s Prayer debacle.

"Why are we shooting ourselves in the foot by opening that can of worms?" said the MPP, recalling that the Liberals were re-elected largely thanks to Progressive Conservative Leader John Tory’s unpopular pledge to fund faith-based schools.

Why indeed?

Well, in any case, that particular May 10 Star article led to another story exposed in the Star where apparently McGuinty chewed out the whole caucus:

"We’re Liberals and from time to time we are going to have different opinions, but we’re always going to emerge, once we’ve taken a position, we’re always going to emerge strong and united ."

In a move that even loyalists now concede was ill-advised, McGuinty ordered all staff members to leave the Liberal caucus room on May 13 then criticized MPPs for speaking out of school .

Well, it seems that somebody must have been playing hooky that day, because again we have one tiny, brave voice speaking out against his Government’s decree that sex-change operations will be funded on the taxpayer’s dime , even though so many people are waiting for operations on other vital organs:

"What I need to hear clearly – and I haven’t – is what is the rationale for this?" said Niagara Falls MPP Kim Craitor, who said he’s been getting a number of calls and emails from constituents. "This one sort of came out of the blue."

Perhaps Kim Craitor should prepare for his after-school detention. Five hundred lines of "I must not cross my leader" should do it.

Constituents’ wishes are irrelevant. McGuinty is king.

Friday Update : Excellent column by Christina Blizzard - Grits show second-term rot . Kim Craitor may soon be getting some company in that detention room:

First, there was Premier Dalton McGuinty’s plan to axe the Lord’s Prayer in the legislature.
Several Liberal backbenchers are up in arms, and say this move came out of nowhere.

York West Liberal Mario Sergio feels very personally about this and has been inundated with signatures on petitions in his riding. He’s even been asked to speak about the issue at churches. He claims other Liberals are also opposed to the plan . . .

…"It has caught many Liberals by total surprise, coming from nowhere. I have to tell you I am not in support of changing it, modifying it, whatever," he said.

"We are nibbling at the few things we have left as Ontarians and Canadians here," Sergio said ….

Blizzard then mentions Kim Craitor’s objection to the reversal of the sex-change delisting, and notes:

…What all this represents, of course, is the disconnect between the McGuinty government’s urban caucus with its grass roots support around the province — and a desperate attempt by Liberal MPPs to distance themselves from the central decision-making process.

Smitherman represents Toronto Centre, a riding that is home to a large number of transgendered people. He ignores the fact you can’t get an eye exam without paying, since the Grits delisted that service, along with physiotherapy and chiropractic services in their first budget.

Look, no doubt we’re all moved by the plight of people who think they’re trapped in a body that’s the wrong sex. Frankly, though, the part of their body that needs examination is their head, not their private bits. And you can’t have health policy dictated by what is politically popular in downtown Toronto. Talk about squeaky wheels!

Oh boy. That last sentence will likely elicit a few letters to the editor from Toronto Centre!

Steve Janke on more loose Liberal lips - This time at the federal level. But in this case, the leader has no control at all.

Oh, and this is sweet! Via Steve Janke :

…Turner says the Liberals, being in opposition for the past two years, have forgotten the need for iron discipline within caucus, something Conservatives, with their considerable experience on the wrong side of the Commons, are now showing themselves to be extremely good at .

-Just a bit ironic, don’t you think?

  1. And Howard is just sitting quietly with a big smile on his face.

  2. Well, I feel your pain, except, Ontario voters are masters of their own provincial government, and they re-elected Dalton.

Look at the bright side, Ontario voters are going to be so upset with the provincial Liberals that they will vote Conservative federally to try and balance their options!

  3. What’s the scoop with that Brodie guy?

He was in my area last week for an event and he refused to speak to the media.

Can you imagine the fuss that would happen if Harper pulled that stunt?

  5. Hejhog, feel free to comment on Brodie here, if you like. Personally, I see this as a good move for all involved.

    Two points re: Ian Brodie.

    1. The usual critics in the Press Gallery (with the exception of Don Martin, to his credit, judging from his appearance on Politics) are trying to connect Mr. Brodie’s departure to the “Nafta-gate” leak, yet I remember reading prior to that leak that Mr. Brodie wanted to return to his teaching post at the University of Western Ontario.

    2. In the Nafta-gate aftermath, everyone was wringing his/her hands that a Canadian would dare try to influence American politics in any way whatsoever. Poor Mr. Obama! His chances for a clear victory in the Ohio primary were hurt because of the possibly deliberate leak blah blah blah.
    Yet in this article http://lfpress.ca/newsstand/News/CanadaWorld/2008/05/23/5647596-sun.html
an American comes to our country saying things like “Kennedy added it’s unlikely Prime Minister Stephen Harper will act to protect Canada’s water.”

Now, like many others of my generation, I have been a fan of the Kennedys, even to the point of choosing not to believe all the talk of their womanizing. They still remain iconic figures in my mind.

However, when Robert Kennedy Jr. and others like him - Michael Moore, Ralph Nader, Rosie O’Donnell among others - stick their nose where it doesn’t belong, telling Canadians how to vote or what to demand from their government, it gets my Canadian back severely UP.

  7. I hear ya, Gabby! BTW, looks like Brodie’s been cleared.

Re: Brodie. I’m sure the MSM “judges” will declare him guilty anyway. Sigh!

  9. Yeah, just watching MDL right now. The opposition certainly isn’t giving up on it.

  10. The Globe says that Brodie has been cleared, then I read the Star and it has the headline saying that Harper’s aide was responsible for the leak.

  11. If only, we as conservatives, had an alternative to support….if only, if only,…………

    I’m living in a dream-world.

  12. Ruth, they can’t seem to let it go. Oh gee. No scandals?

Moebius, I assume you’re talking about the provincial situation. I hear ya. I am underwhelmed with the oppositions’ efforts.

  13. Anybody not being dishonest about the situation will acknowledge Brodie made a bit of a “booboo”. Maybe it was a minor blunder that blew up, perhaps all out of proportion, but still.
It is different to believe that the consequences of what he said were “good” because Senator Obama was on the receiving end.
And it is different to try to justify the mistake after the fact by saying that American citizens or officials have said things to impact Canadian politics, so what’s fair is fair, so to speak.
[The globe story says the same thing about the source as the Star article]
It is different to debate the seriousness of the leak and its consequences, ie to the point of who cares, s**t happens, at one end of the debate, which may not be a crazy opinion to hold on this issue.
But, let’s not pretend that this was a governing party operating at its best.
It’s not blasphemy for conservative supporters to acknowledge minor errors and blemishes and ask their leaders to do a little better, is it? Or must supporters of a party always support and defend every word and action, gratuitously?

  14. Thanks again Joanne for pointing out that McGuinty’s not the choirboy he likes to portray.

  15. Yes, Joanne, only 4 years and counting until we get back into power.

Unfortunately, with the same leader, I suspect the Libs get the next election as well.

So, 8 years and counting, a real conservative Ontario government!

hejhog - except that Brodie DID NOT mention OBAMA - he mentioned Clinton - somewhere after it left the room, it got turned into OBAMA - that fact is clear and has been common knowledge since it happened. Yet the press and the opposition continue to blame him for derailing Obama’s campaign? It is a blatant lie, yet keeps being repeated and repeated until most people believe that Brodie was the source of the leak. That is untrue - so he is cleared because HE DID NOTHING WRONG!!!!!!

  17. Hope you’re sitting down:

    http://www.thestar.com/News/Canada/article/429906

A whole series too. Liberal rag yada yada or something like that.. Take it away.

Seriously though, is this a legitimate area of media coverage of our government in a democracy? Or no?

Can I get a, yeah but, the Liberals did it too.

The best line is: “Party strategists and the Prime Minister’s Office did not respond to a request to comment on the topic.” Get it? Pretty funny.

Should Canadians care that promises of more transparency and openness have not been kept and that FOIA requests are more necessary than ever? Or no?

  18. Oh, just seeing you now Alberta Girl. I know it subsequently turned into Obama and that he didn’t mention Obama. I don’t say anyting contradictory to that fact. The booboo was the loose lips in the first place which ultimately led to damage to Obama. I mean, what was he thinking?
It started as potentially damaging to Clinton. The G&M sets out that Brodie had conversations with CTV reporters advising that the government had received assurances from Clinton about her attacks on NAFTA. Apparently Brodie was leaking information that he didn’t even have correct. That was Brodie’s faux pas.
It ultimately became damaging to Obama so there is no blatant lie that I see and my point was that some people have the view of, who cares, because Obama was tarnished. I’m saying fine, but that doesn’t mean that objectively, Brodie should have been talking abouot it.
So, Brodie had discussions with the CTV on the issue getting the ball rolling, even though he didn’t have his facts completely straight and even though he shouldn’t have been leaking that particular type of information because of its source. I don’t know how you then conclude he wasn’t the source of the leak:
“Yesterday’s report concluded that Mr. Brodie had informal discussions with reporters from CTV News in February regarding attacks on the North American free-trade agreement made by candidates for the Democratic presidental nomination.”
