Brenda sure has been CON-vincing

As Brenda Martin is happily tucked away in her cottage at Grand Valley Institution for Women , we can all rest easy knowing that she has her beloved peanut butter and is receiving lots of medical care courtesy of Canadian taxpayers. Brenda’s co-accused Rebecca Roth sure isn’t getting this kind of treatment.

And in case you missed it, a little seven-year-old girl from Montreal was so moved by all the media attention given Brenda Martin, that she felt compelled to write a song, which you can hear here , courtesy of the Edmonton Journal. Kinda gives ya goosebumps, doesn’t it? Or nausea.

So, exactly what was the cost of Brenda’s little mercy flight from Mexico to Kitchener? CBC pegs it at $82,787 .

- And the sounds of silence as Brenda Martin munches on peanut butter cups? - Priceless .

Update : Don’t read this post by Dr. Roy if you’re prone to high-blood pressure.

  1. Brenda Martin only has a voice if we listen. I choose to henceforth ignore all things Brenda Martin. This is my last post on her… ever!

  2. I’m with Reid, may she fade into the prison system never to be heard from again. As if that will happen.

  3. Aarggghhh!
    WTF Already -
    Like, GOOD RIDDANCE!
    No more, I say!
    No more!

  4. Legal Briefs(Court TV) had a show on her tonight. I called in and said Canadians are sick of this whiny woman. I also said I was disappointed by the absolute lack of gratitude by this woman and her family. Most of the callers were also of a similar opinion. Some Mexicans called complaining about the holier than thou attitudes of Canadians. Dan Mcteague was on and a woman named Marion called in and called the whole thing a partisan liberal issue.

  5. Hear the last of her!?
    You’ve got to be dreaming.
Her Canadian lawyer is Eddie Greenspan and he’s already been on the news demanding her immediate release.
She’s never going to go away.
    You know what?
The best thing the Conservatives could do right now is to apologize to the Canadian people for reacting in such an over-the-top way to the Brenda Martin case by loaning her the money for her bail and flying her home by private jet.
The public understands that the government was brow-beaten into it and will forgive. They will also walk away with a better understanding of the intermingling of the Liberal Party and the Main Stream Media.
Then Harper should declare that the Conservative Party itself would cover the cost of the flight home.
Home run. She’s cast adrift. End of story.

  6. Get off her back will ya - enough already.

The Cons may be sick of her - because they don’t care about people - that does not mean Canadians are sick her whining as Dr. Roy says - he speaks, perhaps for himself, but not all Canadains.

Mexicans can bitch all they want - they have a corrupt government and corrupt judicial system - and that’s the facts.

  7. Alberta Girl Says:
    May 5th, 2008 at 11:54 pm

Sandi, Sandi, Sandi - enough already, girl. Believe me, sweetie, most “Canadians” are sick and tired of her ungrateful, teary demands. They can see that this was a Liberal ploy to try once again to produce some sort of “pseudo scandal” to attempt to turn Canadians against the Tories. That’s the problem, Sandi, when you cry wolf over and over and over again, most people just stop listening. With Brenda - they stopped listening when the facts about her case started to come out and it became clear that our Brenda wasn’t quite the poor, tortured Canadian holed up in a hell-hole of a jail like the Liberals had portrayed her. Then she just added insult to injury by accusing the government of not doing anything for her and then when they proved that they had been working on things behind since her arrest, she cried Invasion of Privacy!!!

So Sandi - we would love to “get off her back”, but she just keeps popping back up with her ungratefulness and her demanding nature.

  8. Wow, not seeing too much tolerance from Sandi. Progressives sure like to stereotype. So, if you say Cons don’t care about people, is it okay with you if I say all Libs are crooks and liars, and all Dippers are Commies?

As a conservative, I can tell you that I care deeply for others - especially victims of crime. Unlike Libs who want to pamper the criminal and forget the victim.

  9. Such intolerance Sandi…tisk, tisk. Shows how “progressive” the “progressives” really are now, doesn’t it.

  10. How long will it be before BM and Greenspan are in the news because they want to sue the government for acting too slowly as did Maher Arar

  11. Three or so weeks ago you asked if people were sick of Brenda Martin. I was sick of her then and now I have that sick feeling of being scammed. The flight back to Canada was 80 or so thou, but what is the total including government and opposition junkets to service the prison beauty? And did our health service pay for the operation to allow Brenda, Deb and dear old Mom to cry on cue? The only good thing I see is that with a conviction she will have to stay in Canada and heaven forbid pay taxes for the first time in ten years.

  12. Then Harper should declare that the Conservative Party itself would cover the cost of the flight home.

Not a bad idea, Neil, but then there would still be some people complaining that if they did it for one, they should do it for every other of 1,750 Canadians in prison abroad.

I must say Jason Kenney was excellent on this file. He got the job done, and no media-hogging like some Liberal MPs.

  13. What does CBC peg the cost of CBC’s own multiple reporter vactions, er reporting junkets, to cheerlead for Brenda’s release in the sunshine?

  14. I think someone should inform Greenspan that he’s going to look like a fool for representing Martin - she’s a nobody and her 15 seconds of fame are all used up. Plus, she’s not very popular with the taxpayers. Besides if she can’t get a book or movie deal, her only income will probably be welfare. If her family was going to pitch in financially, they would have paid her 3,500 fine, which would have been the right thing to do.

  15. I think someone should inform Greenspan that he’s going to look like a fool for representing Martin

He looked like a real fool when he called for her immediate release - obviously forgetting that she will have no public health coverage once she’s out of prison.

  16. I’m with you on that one Joanne!
He did look rather stupid demanding her to be set free immediately, while the rest of her entourage was begging for the old hag to stay in so she could reap the rewards of free health care and free detox/rehab!
The whole thing has become quite the flippin’ expensive joke where I sit -

And so yes, why don’t all the other incarcerated canadians abroad get the same VIP treatment?

  17. Her income will be Ontario Works!

Until she can latch on to ODSP for ongoing drug-addictions, which of course will be the Mexicans fault.
We know she likes her money easy, tax-free and for doing little or nothing, or doing it drunk from the outset of the fresh morning hours…Usually was impaired by 10 am, no?

And so yes, I’m 100% positve that she’ll be claiming that she can’t work because of her drug addictions, and that she’ll BE entitled to sit on her ass collecting free funds from Canada…

And again, yes! We all know that if she can benefit, especially financially from this pathetic fiasco she put herself in, well that’s what she’ll do…
As long as there is a “payoff” for her, and it doesn’t require much output or exursion from her, well, she’ll be all over that like cockroaches doing the Mexican Cucaracha!

    It’s a given!

  18. I’m just surprised that she can enjoy her peanut butter here. It’s one of the few things that a special interest group doesn’t like that McGuinty hasn’t banned yet. (Although many schools have)

  19. Sounds like Money Laundering and Transfer of Illicit Funds if you ask me

In a feeble defense of Martin’s innocence Charles Adler told his listeners that “all Brenda Martin got was some ’severance’ money’ ( severance ????) which was not only misleading but an outright prevarication and a stranger to the facts of the case.

According to the 110-page verdict, the judge found Ms. Martin guilty of depositing and transferring illicit funds.
Between March and August of 2001, she received nearly $60,000 in Canadian funds in her Mexican bank account, and about $3,000 of it was transferred from the Latvian bank account of one of Mr. Waage’s shell companies.
Most of the money – $38,700 – was transferred by Ms. Martin from another account in her name.

Not bad for someone working for minimum wage.

…According to the 110-page verdict, the judge found Ms. Martin guilty of depositing and transferring illicit funds. Most of the money – $38,700 – was transferred by Ms. Martin from another account in her name.

Ms. Martin also received a $15,000 transfer from Keith Nordick, a Saskatchewan man living in Puerto Vallarta who was Mr. Waage’s right-hand man in the scheme.Mr. Nordick pleaded guilty in a California court to fraud and money laundering in 2005.

Ms. Martin also transferred $16,000 from her bank account to Mr. Waage’s sister, Lynn Johnston. Ms. Johnston is wanted on fraud charges, but has never been apprehended…

Then there is the so called 26 thousand dollar severance pay for someone who was fired after 9 months employment - you can be sure the judge , just like any other sane person, didn’t buy their explanation it was so called “severance” pay.

  20. And most people don’t get severance pay after being FIRED!
Usually severance pay is figured by the amount of years of service. One year of service equals one WEEKs pay…
So how do you get 26,000 out of eight months?

Must have been one hell of a cook! Frozen vegetables and all…

  21. This is from an article by Charles Rusnell so I am not sure she was much of a cook - since she didn’t have a work permit I don’t think Mexican law was going to protect her interests.

“Look it, I was there from the beginning and [Ms. Martin] was just a cook,” said the man, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “She got the groceries and she had authority to buy stuff for the household. That’s it. She was there cooking for the gang. We never told her anything because she was a drunk, and she was always downtown in the bars running her mouth.”

Another Alberta man, who worked directly on the scheme dealing with investors, said, “All I know is that she was a terrible cook because she was drunk all the time and that she had no interest in what we were doing.”

  22. As far as severance goes when one if fired how about a defeated MP or MLA being defeated and given re-location allowances or whatever.
The people have fired them, same for other heads or govt org that are fired for cause. No entitlements for the.

  23. I think it is time Dan McTeague addessed his comments with facts instead of statements. BM looks guilty to me but if Dan McTeague thinks otherwise, then he should provide evidence to back up his statements. The Mexican Gov’t released the reasons BM was found guilty. BM should thank the Mexican Gov’t for not charging her with Immigration violations; working without proper documentation, not declaring income and not paying taxes. Dan McTeague states BM is innocent and if he believes his own words, then he is saying it is not against the law to work illegally in a country and not against the law to avoid paying taxes. Dan McTeague’s statement also infers the Mexican Gov’t fabricated all the evidence used to convict Brenda. ‘Show me the evidence’, Dan?

  24. Isn’t this farce over yet??

“A member of the swallow family, Martins are a popular bird with bird watchers and back yard enthusiasts. In particular, the Purple Martin is by far the most popular. Native to the Americas, ***Martins are migratory birds.*** Each Fall ***they travel south thousands of miles to make their winter home in Central and South America.*** In the spring, they return to North America and can be found well into Canada.”

And, one anagram for Brenda Martin is: aberrant mind
    ;-)

  26. lol!!! Gabby, you are too much!

  27. Mexicans can bitch all they want - they have a corrupt government and corrupt judicial system

Yeah, we’d never stand for that in Canada. Bags of cash to political parties….

  28. Stephanie D-Yawn should have her run as a Liberal in the spring election, oh wait, the Liberals will still be sitting on their hands.
